LEARNING CENTRE, INABURRA

Particularly in education, there is an opportunity for the built environment to impact and shape the lives of its users, not only for the present generation, but for generations to come. At NBRSARCHITECTURE we understand that 21st Century learning spaces should not only encourage learning, but should provide limitless possibilities for flexible learning, conducive to various teaching methods.

EARLY LEARNING NBRS has provided learning and day care facilities for numerous community, institutional and church groups. These facilities have been in the form of pre-schools, kindergartens, child-care centres, long day care centres and early learning centres. We have also designed facilities for specialist centres providing care for children with special needs.

NBRS designed a new facility for the growing CSU Thurgoona Campus, which is co-located with the Murray School of Education and the School of Community Health. The new Early Learning and Nurture Centre offers unique opportunities for students to combine the theoretical with the practical. At the centre of the design is a multi-purpose space that can be directly accessed and viewed from all wings. The childcare wings have been specifically orientated to ensure maximum sun exposure and each opens into a generous veranda that provides a protected transition zone to the outdoor play areas, designed to encourage imaginative and stimulating play.

PRIMARY & SECONDARY

NBRS has extensive experience in the design of primary and secondary schools and understands the importance of designing a

safe and caring environment for children to transition from the home to the broader social community. NBRS has designed Oran Park Public School – a new “Core 21” Primary School with Special Needs facilities. The new facilities include 16 home-bases and 6 special educational homebases, a Communal Hall, Canteen and Covered Outdoor Learning Area, a Library, Administration and Student and staff amenities. NBRS designed a new state-of-theart sports and aquatic facility for the existing science building at Queenwood School for Girls. The refurbishment of the existing facilities also included the modernisation of 6 classrooms, 5 laboratories, a 108-seat theatrette and staff facilities.

TERTIARY

NBRS understands the importance of higher education and aims to create academic environments that not only provide students with limitless possibilities, but also allow teachers to effectively communicate and pass on information. NBRS was engaged with International Screen Academy to create a stimulating environment where the challenge and joy of acting and production could merge to produce real opportunities beyond the academy. Detailed delivery of design was achieved through highly specified studio environments with controlled acoustics and all the state-of-the-art lighting and connectedness for a contemporary learning environment. The studios are highly controlled environments and this is balanced with a generous sense of space, transparency, light and colour where collaboration is promoted. NBRS has been appointed to transform the Macquarie University E7A Building to support the innovation, learning and research pursuits of the departments within Science and Engineering. The new spaces will increase building utilisation [productivity], bringing together all staff and administrators, while proposing an innovative workspace design, providing a highly stimulating environment for the next generation of academics.

HOTEL 1888, PYRMONT

NBRSARCHITECTURE understands that the best housing is integrated with social services as well as connected to the urban fabric and the wider community. Contemporary housing solutions should be designed to provide better security and more light, common spaces, recreational amenities, facilities for support services and spaces that foster wellness. They should reach beyond their role of mere residential accommodation (housing), with a broader scope of addressing inhabitants’ holistic wellbeing (habitats). NBRS aims to provide environments that exude these principles and offer high quality design, amenity and quality of life for inhabitants.

10

1888 HOTEL – HERITAGE ADVICE

This project involved the adaptation of a fivestorey heritage-listed warehouse with office fitout into a boutique hotel. The brick and sandstone facades, internal timber structure and one of the cart ways were adapted and conserved as part of the project. NBRS provided heritage advice to the project architect to develop an innovative design that removes intrusive elements, exposes the most significant parts of the building to public use and conserves the significant fabric with a long-term viable use.

SYDNEY MANSIONS NBRSARCHITECTURE have revitalised a significant heritage warehouse into a vibrant city apartment building. Sydney Mansions, in Surry Hills, originally constructed in 1922 as part of the Mark Foys department store group, has now been converted into 110 apartments of distinctive contemporary design. In order to maximise the allowable floor space, four additional floors have been added to the top of the building. Apartments on the top two floors have been finished to meet the needs of a new style of cosmopolitan living. Retail fitout was included to complement inner city living requirements with parking for 84 cars, swimming pool and gymnasium facilities.

We are passionate about achieving a seamless connection between interior design and the whole architectural concept. We think deeply about how interior spaces are used and create innovative design solutions. Our Interior services include space planning, detailed fixture design and the selection of furnishings.

TARONGA ZOO OFFICES In working closely with Taronga Zoo throughout the master planning process, NBRS produced a concept that best achieves the client’s vision of improving global recognition through innovation in science, research and education. This was realised through a number of stages of evaluation and analysis in the master

12

planning process, with client input and review during each phase: From in depth site studies that investigated environment, program and approaches to work and pedagogy, spatial flow diagrams were produced that outlined public/private connections between spaces and their relationship to various surrounding precincts within the zoo. Client feedback was welcomed to ensure their vision and needs were understood and evident in an agreed final master plan scheme, which was further refined and developed.

M3 BUILDING The building was quite dilapidated and needed to be completely refurbished internally and substantially externally. Covered in 70 years

of pipes, cables, ducts and alterations with power deficiencies and general dilapidation, a major stripping down to the structure resulted. Construction of a second floor within the structure was possible with very tight height limits requiring modification of existing roof trusses on site. The building was detailed as a double skin heavily insulated shell, sealed to the outside and mechanically temperature controlled internally. Landscaping around the building was extensive and extended to the whole precinct including building M2 which we had previously refurbished.

LODDON PRISON, CASTLEMAINE

Often the challenge with correctional centres and prisons is de-institutionalising the design of the facility, while maintaining the necessary security requirements. NBRS seeks to integrate contemporary and innovative design elements to create environments that promote rehabilitation for the users who encounter these spaces.

LODDON PRISON

Located in Castlemaine, in regional Victoria the 260 bed Restricted Minimum Security Prison is a standalone annexe to the main Loddon Medium Security Prison. The new facility includes a range of services for prisoners of this classification, including a visits centre, health facility, education and program delivery spaces, recreational facilities and a large industry workshop. NBRS’ design intent was to create a rehabilitative, campus style facility with a focus on open space reflective of community based non-custodial facilities, whilst maintaining a secure perimeter, sight lines and staff oversight of prisoners at all times.

MURRAY ART MUSEUM ALBURY [MAMA] NBRS recently completed a $10.5M

refurbishment of Murray Art Museum Albury [MAMA]. The Art Gallery, located in the heart of Albury’s central business district and adjacent to QE2 Park, forms part of Albury’s Civic and Cultural Precinct. The project consisted of the refurbishment of the existing heritage-listed Art Gallery building (circa 1910) and the adjacent Burrows House building (circa 1870), together with the provision of a new twostorey addition at the rear to accommodate major touring art exhibitions.

NORTH SYDNEY COUNCIL CHAMBERS North Sydney Council engaged NBRS to develop concept designs for the upgrade of Staff and Councillor accommodation at their Council Chambers. The office improvements are part of a long-term plan for the rolling upgrade of staff accommodation. NBRS aimed to reactivate this unique

heritage space by creating innovative, staffcentric spaces that support a range of ABW spatial concepts. This initiative supports Council’s commitment to leading innovation and improving services whilst achieving maximum staff and Councillor satisfaction and enabling increased collaboration and participation throughout the enterprise. The design solution signals a significant change for the Council and helps to bring the community of the organisation together. The desired outcome is to better motivate staff, who will ultimately improve services to Councillors, Business Partners and Residents of North Sydney.
