The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board exists to advise and make recommendations to the City Council concerning policy matters related to the establishment, maintenance and operation of the City’s parks and recreation programs. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm at City Hall, located at 550 Landa Street. Help us have successful programs by registering early! All programs must have a minimum number of participants in order to be conducted. If a programs does not meet this minimum the class may be cancelled/combined a minimum of five days prior to the class start date.

If registering for a class that is full, your name can be placed on a waiting list. This does not guarantee a spot, but individuals will be contacted if an opening becomes available.

REFUNDS

Cancellations of programs or events made one week (7 days) prior to the start of a program will receive a full credit to their account or a refund will be issued. NO CREDITS OR REFUNDS will be given within seven days or after the start of a program or event. Registration fees will not be prorated for partial attendance of any program.

The New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Department routinely takes photos and videos of participants in recreation activities, programs and special events and/or at recreation facilities. These photos and/ or videos may be used for promotional purposes. Be aware that by participating, you are granting the City of New Braunfels the right to use and publish your image or your minor child’s image. Das Rec classes and programs listed as free are free for members. Non-members must purchase a day pass to participate in a free class or program.

Do you love playing with gooey slime? Have you wanted to experiment with a variety of materials to make your own gooey creation? If so, come get messy and experiment with us! We will make a variety of slimes—from basic to edible slime. Keep in mind that slime can get messy, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Get ready to combine your sweet tooth with some sweet decorating skills. We are joining forces with the owner of 2tarts Bakery for a hands-on experience that will teach participants how to make beautiful and delicious cookies from start to finish. These classes will familiarize participants with essential tools and kitchen safety, teach how to decorate using dipping and royal icing, and show participants how to make royal icing and sugar dough from scratch. Familiarize children to the aquatic environment and help them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water.

Level 1 Introduction to Aquatic Skills Ages: 6-12

Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water. Skills to be learned: Bobs, blowing bubbles, glides and recovery, very basics of freestyle.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills Ages: 6-12

Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Skills to be learned: Combined arm & leg action on front, various floating techniques, increased distance swim.

Level 3 Stroke Development Ages: 6-12

Build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Skills to be learned: Survival float, treading water, elementary backstroke, breaststroke kick, streamline position.

Level 4 & 5 Stroke Improvement and Refinement Ages: 6-12

Help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes (i.e., front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke). Skills to be learned: Open turns, butterfly, breaststroke, increased time treading water, increase distance swim.

Don’t let fear keep you out of the water! Skills from the American Red Cross Learn To Swim and Longfellow’s Whales Tales programs are taught to help you overcome fear and increase your enjoyment and confidence in water! MASTERS SWIM TEAM

Want to get back into the swim of things? Masters Swim is for the adult swimmer looking to have a coached workout and improve swim techniques. This program is led by Maters certified coaches. For your convenience, the Das Rec Master Swim Team is setup with monthly installment billing using a debit/credit card authorization. The monthly payment will be drafted on the 1st of each month.

Want to SEA what scuba is all about? Come in on the first Thursday of every month for a sneak peak into the world of SCUBA. Cost: $20 | Das Rec Pool | 7PM Thursdays June 6 July 11 August 1 September 5

Private scuba Certification

Over 70% of our world is covered in water, and very few people have explored the depths. Now is your chance to SEA for yourself! The course will consist of classroom and pool exercises over six weeks, followed by a weekend of open water dives at Spring Lake in San Marcos, TX. Equipment will be supplied, but it is recommended each student purchase their own mask, snorkel, boots and fins. Discounted equipment packages are available through USA SCUBA for participants. LIFEGUARD TRAINING - 24090103

This American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. This course will teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.

BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION CLASS - 24090102

Start your own babysitting service the right way with a certification from our trained American Red Cross Instructor. This course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to safely give care for children and infants. Participants will develop leadership skills, and learn basic child care, first aid, and CPR. Please bring a sack lunch. Age: 11-15 | Cost: $80 | 8am-2pm Das Rec A: Tuesday, June 18 B: Wednesday, August 7

Entry-level Lifeguard participants will gain the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Certification includes Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid. A valid email address must be provided to receive your certification from the American Red Cross.

CAMP MINNEHAHA COUNSELOR IN TRAINING PROGRAM (CIT)

Teens experience all the great things about day camp AND have an opportunity to develop job and leadership skills. CITs assist counselors with implementing and planning camp activities. To be a CIT, you must submit a completed application with a letter of recommendation and complete a brief interview to be accepted into the program. All CITs accepted into the program must attend an orientation prior to attending camp. Spots are limited and available on a week by week basis. Email cpaddock@nbtexas.org with questions. Join us for a sportin’ good time! This class will introduce participants to four different sports including: Basketball, Kickball, Volleyball and Futsal. Our instructors will guide the most novice of athletes through fundamental movements and skills of each sport with an emphasis on learning through play. Drills will emphasize technique, sharing, patience and motor skill development.

Bring your tyke to learn how to spike! Come have some fun learning how to pass, set and spike at Das Rec. We will break down the fundamentals and tactics of volleyball with a variety of fun games and drills. This clinic is a great way for young athletes to learn the important skills of serving, setting, passing and SPIKING! Come join us for a week of volleyball fun!

The Little Athletes series of courses are designed to give your preschooler a basic introduction to sports. Our coaches will guide the most novice of athletes through the fundamental movements and skills of each sport with an emphasis on learning through play. There are a wide variety of skill levels and abilities in the preschool age group (3-5) so our courses are designed to allow each child to develop their skills individually while learning in a group setting. Get ready to combine your sweet tooth with some sweet decorating skills. We are joining forces with the owner of 2tarts Bakery for a hands-on experience that will teach participants how to make beautiful and delicious cookies from start to finish. These classes will familiarize participants with essential tools and kitchen safety, teach how to decorate using dipping and royal icing, and show participants how to make royal icing and sugar dough from scratch. Age: 9-12 | Cost: $75 | 1-3pm Westside Community Center A: Monday–Friday - June 10–14
