WILLIAM & DOLORES sCHUMANN

ARBORETUM An arboretum is a place for the study, display and preservation of trees. Thanks to the foresight and devotion of members of the Guada Coma Garden Club, Landa Park was designated as an arboretum in 1982. In 2007, the Arboretum was named after William and Dolores Schumann, in honor of their endless devotion to this botanical jewel.

Pick up your guide:

The Arboretum Guide is available for purchase for $5.00 at the Parks Administrative Office. The Guide and map are also available, free of charge, on the Parks and Recreation website, www.nbtexas.org/arboretum.

Spotlight Possum-haw

Ilex decidua

#3 in the William & Dolores Schumann Arboretum Guide. Possum-haw commonly grows as a large bush or small multi-trunked tree in fence rows or near water. It ranges in size from 12’ to 20’ tall and spreads up to 10’ to 15’ wide. Its relatively small size makes this a good tree for planting under utility lines. Possum-haw is in the holly family and this species loses their leaves in the winter. The female holly produces white flowers in the spring and clusters of bright red-orange berries in the fall that often persist all winter, providing a stark contrast of color. The berries are eaten by birds and small mammals in late winter. The male trees produce no berries. Possum-haw tolerates a wide variety of soil types, has a moderate growth rate, and prefers part shade to full sun.

Protect your trees from oak wilt Visit texasoakwilt.org to identify, prevent and control oak wilt.

Blackland Prairie Restoration F

ischer Park has reserved over 30-acres, about half of the park’s acreage, as native prairie. PARD staff and volunteers removed non-native, invasive species and prepared the prairie restoration sites for planting. NEC staff and volunteers planted 252 pounds of seed mix. In August 2015, the first 11 acres were drill-seeded with native prairie plants by Native American Seed Company. In April 2016, seven more acres were planted on the west side of the park. By March of 2016, the first 11 acres were in full bloom and growing. The Blackland Prairie project provides habitat for wildlife and an important source of interpretive topics for educational programs. The prairie plants provide an abundant supply of host and food plants for pollinators. Prairie-adapted bird species of concern are residing in the restored prairie, such as Dickcissels, Scissor-tailed Flycatchers,

[

Loggerhead Shrikes, Lark Sparrows, and Field Sparrows. The Blackland Prairie project and riparian habitat restoration and management work will provide ongoing volunteer opportunities, educational material and benefit the entire community. Native American Seed is also scheduled to do periodic visits which will ensure maximum timeliness of species removal and replanting. The restoration of a 30-plus acre Blackland Prairie of native plants in the heart of New Braunfels and less than a mile off Interstate 35 is remarkable. Long-term, the prairie will stabilize soil, lessen erosion, and should only increase in importance as a true environmental asset for the New Braunfels community.

Why don't you mow the field?

]

• A prairie may look like an overgrown field, but these native plants are just starting to grow. This time of year the native clump grasses and prairie plants are getting established, mowing now would benefit invasive non-native grasses such as Bermudagrass.

What are the benefits of a the blackland prairie? • Blackland Prairies are the most endangered ecosystem in the country. These grasslands provide critical habitat for wildlife, improve water quality and soil and require less maintenance than turf.

N

ew Braunfels Parks and Recreation's Fischer Park joins Bayer Feed a Bee Program to plant forage for pollinators in New Braunfels. Fischer Park's Blackland Prairie Restoration project is part of the Bayer Feed a Bee program’s $500,000 initiative to plant forage areas in all 50 states by the end of 2018. The Blackland Prairie habitat offers increased habitat and nutrition sources for local pollinators. As one of the initial recipients of grants awarded during the first selection cycle of this two-year initiative, New Braunfels Parks and Recreation's Fischer Park received $5,000 to fund its planting project, which, together with the 57 additional projects recently honored, will help provide a tangible, sustainable solution to the current lack of forage for bees and other pollinators.

[

The Fischer Park Nature Education Center provides programs that teach the importance of pollinators to our food supply and how we can all play a role in keeping them healthy and well-fed by planting bee-attractant flowers. Through the newly planted pollinator habitat, these program participants will have the opportunity to see firsthand how bees buzz from plant to plant. Fischer Park staff will work with volunteers to continue to plant more blooms that support their health. ]

Why do we need to help the bees, you ask?

• The world population is expected to grow to 9 billion people by 2050, requiring 70 percent more food, and many of the fruits and vegetables we need in a healthy diet rely on pollination by insects like bees. • Planting more beautiful, pollinator-friendly plants that bees and other pollinators love to snack on is one thing we can all do to help our tiny but hardworking friends.
