URBAN Forestry

WILLIAM & DOLORES SCHUMANN

Arboretum

An arboretum is a place for the study, display and preservation of trees. Thanks to the foresight and devotion of members of the Guada Coma Garden Club, Landa Park was designated as an arboretum in 1982. This arboretum acts as a living library of trees. In 2007, the arboretum was named after William and Dolores Schumann, in honor of their endless devotion to this botanical jewel.

PICK UP YOUR GUIDE

The Arboretum Guide is available for purchase at the Parks Administration Office. The printed guide is $5. The walking trail is 1.25 miles and open to the public. The guide and map are also available on the Parks and Recreation website, free of charge.

SCHEDULE A GUIDED TOUR

Schedule your next group guided tour (minimum group size 8) with Kelly Eby, the City’s Urban Forester.

The Founders’ Oak in Landa Park. Tree #11 in the Arboretum Guide.

ARBORETUM GUIDESpotlight Southern Magnolia

Magnolia grandifolia The southern magnolia is a medium-sized, beautiful evergreen tree of the South; it grows up to 80 feet tall with a dense pyramidal crown, and thick straight trunk. Magnolias grow naturally along streams and rivers, in rich moist well drained soils. It has a moderate to fast growth rate and is widely planted for the beauty of its glossy leaves, flowers, and fruit. The thick leathery leaves stay on the tree for about two years. The 6-8 inches wide, fragrant flowers have pure white petals with a splash of purple in the center. The flower ripens into a brown cone and the bright red seeds hang on threads of silk. Some wildlife can eat the seeds and use the larger tree for dens. To plant a magnolia tree, give it good soil, and allow the limbs to grow to the ground to prevent injury to its trunk and to protect its sensitive shallow roots.

Landa Park River Front Rehabilitation Project

Landa Park River Front Rehabilitation Project is made up of several components including the replacement of 4,400 linear feet of stone retaining walls along the Comal River in Landa Park.

The contractor started work on the Gazebo Circle side of the spring run - near the fishing pier - and will proceed upstream, towards the wadingpool. The project will be addressed in several sections in order to minimize adverse impact upon park patrons and the environmentally protected waterways of Landa Park. Stay tuned to our website for updates on this project. www.nbtexas.org/parksprojects

LANDA PARK GOLF COURSE

RENOVATION

THE COURSE IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION. ANTICIPATED COMPLETION: FALL OF 2014.

Renovations include redesign of some holes, building new greens, adding new tees, and replacing cart paths. Fairway improvements will include contouring and the addition of fairway bunkers. The landscape design will feature native grasses in “out of play” areas that will add texture and color for further definition. A short game practice area will be a new feature. Finally, the new irrigation system will efficiently water tees, greens, fairways and near roughs which will allow sufficient coverage to all areas of play.

IMPROVE YOUR GAME WITH ONE ON ONE LESSONS. Our golf professionals are still teaching lessons. Lessons are being conducted at the Rivercity Range during the renovation project. Call 830-221-4340 to set an appointment.

Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan

What is the EAHCP? The Edwards Aquifer is an artesian aquifer located in the heart of South Central Texas. The Aquifer is the sole source of drinking water for nearly two million people and serves as the primary water source for agriculture, industrial, and other municipal uses. The EAHCP is intended to resolve the long-standing conflict between the federal mandate to protect threatened and endangered species within the Edwards Aquifer, and protect the region’s dependence on the aquifer as its primary water resource.

The City of New Braunfels is participating in the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan, the culmination of a decades-long conversation on how to best protect the endangered species of the Comal and San Marcos rivers and springs. The City embarked on the Habitat Conservation Plan in coordination with the Edwards Aquifer Authority, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Fish and Wildlife Service approved the plan, along with the incidental take permit and the Environmental Impact Statement in February 2013 and published notice in the Federal Register.

The EAHCP was developed through a unique collaborative process involving stakeholders representing diverse interests throughout the region, including state agencies, agricultural and commercial users, municipalities, and environmental groups. The implementation of this plan works to establish a balance for all stakeholders of the Edwards Aquifer, and develops a certainty within the community for: Compliance with Federal

and State Law

Comal Springs New Braunfels, Texas Comal Springs ecosystem is the largest spring system in Texas as well as the southwestern United States (Brune 1975). It originates from the Edwards Aquifer and is located mainly in Landa Park. The system is comprised of four major spring runs that feed into Landa Lake and an undetermined number of smaller springs present in the spring runs and in Landa Lake. The spring runs and Landa Lake form the headwaters of the Comal River, the shortest navigable river in Texas, which spans 3.1 miles before its confluence with the Guadalupe River. Comal Springs has the largest mean discharge of any spring in the southwestern United States (George et al. 1952). In the period from 1928 – 2002 the average flow of Comal Springs has been 286.5 cubic feet per second (cfs) (Edwards Aquifer Authority 2003). In 1956, the springs ceased flowing from June to November during an extended drought. The system exhibits near constant temperatures (annual mean 74.1°F), excellent water quality, and low nutrient and bacteria levels (USFWS 1996).

Old Channel Restoration Sediment Island Removal

The Habitat Conservation Plan involves multiple components in New Braunfels. The Edwards Aquifer Authority is supporting the cost of these worthwhile projects which benefit not only the region but also New Braunfels.

Before

Old Channel Restoration Flow Split Management Aquatic Vegetation Restoration Restoration of Riparian Zones & Riffle Beetle
Riparian Improvement Gill Parasite Control Non-Native Plant Species Control Decaying Vegetation Removal Litter Control

After

Floating Vegetation Management

As a part of the Old Channel Restoration, problematic non-native vegetation and a small sediment island were removed, restoring the area to its natural state to enhance fountain darter habitat. The sediment island removal project was completed as part of the EAHCP. Not only is this benefiting an endangered species (Fountain Darter) in this reach of the old river channel (near the spring fed pool and golf course), it is restoring the area to its natural state.
