FUN FACTS ABOUT TREES

DID YOU KNOW...

The oldest living organism on Earth is a tree! Growing high (9500-9800 ft above sea level) in the White Mountains in eastern California, the Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) claims the title as oldest single organism on Earth. Known as Methuselah, it has a confirmed age of 4,853 years putting the germination date somewhere around 2833 BCE. That means it was around 300 years old when construction began on the Pyramids of Giza.

DID YOU KNOW...

The largest living organism on Earth is a tree! Well, a 43.6 hectare or 108-acre grove of clonal quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) trees actually. Known as Pando (Latin for “I spread”) it’s located in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest. As a clonal grove, this means that all of its approximately 47,000 individual stems have sprouted as genetically identical clones from the same root system. That root system itself could be in the running for oldest organism with estimates ranging from 10,000 to 80,000 years, however the individual aspen stems rarely live beyond 130 years and because it is a clonal grove it can’t be considered a single organism.
