COMAL COUNTY BIRDERS If you’re curious about nature and want to learn more about what you see and hear in the parks, birding is a great skill and a fun hobby! Meet the Comal County Birders! A small, but hardy, birding group, who have been documenting bird sightings in Comal County for going on 23 years.

When you start to notice the birds around you, you find yourself more perceptive. It helps you notice what was previously overlooked like small details likes bees, trees, fruits, ponds, flowers, and even the grasses. Birding is a gateway to getting to know your environment better and appreciating all the is around you. Here are some reasons to get into birding:

A BRIEF HISTORY

Several people came together in 1998, led former Canyon Lake manager Jerry Brite, with the goal of creating a bird checklist for Comal County. A secondary goal was to get parks in Comal County on the Great Texas Birding Trail – Heart of Texas East, https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wildlife/wildlife-trails/hote , a goal which was accomplished as six sites, five around Canyon Lake, plus Landa Park, which now have the familiar brown signs from Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD). Now the group is active on Facebook under “Comal County Birders”, where anyone can post pictures or queries about birds seen in Comal County. Lynn Thompson, an active birder and member, describes the group as a loosely knit band of birder lovers who bird together once a month in Comal County and up to 5 miles outside the county lines. The Comal County Birders host two big events each year, the Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) for New Braunfels on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s (they have done it for 20 years, though it was run in the past from 1965-1986 by other people) and a “faux” count in January that we run like a CBC for the Canyon Lake area.
