AT THE HELM
HONORARY SECRETARY’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members The New Year comes along, bringing with it a gift of hope and inspiration for everyone. At RSYC, we have much to look forward to in 2014. We welcomed our new General Manager, Mr Trevor De Silva, in early December. Managing the expectations of members with diverse interests is no small feat and I trust that you will give Trevor your full support and co-operation as he gets better acquainted with the Club and its members. Working closely with the heads-ofdepartments and other personnel, Trevor will ensure that the day-to-day operations of the Club run smoothly. The MembersFirst initiative which was rolled out at the start of the term will gather momentum as we continue to build up a culture of customer service excellence. This is an approach that puts members’ interests above all else in every plan we make and every decision and action we take in the course of managing the Club. It is the responsibility of everyone, up and down the line, to help raise the level of service that they bring to every interaction. Members are most welcome, as always, to give their feedback to the Committee or management. The RSYC has been in existence since 1826; so it should come as no surprise that we have an ageing membership.

In addition to just increasing the membership count, we need to see renewal in our membership. To this end, we will be re-introducing entry level sea sports activities (like rowing and canoeing) to attract tertiary students and young working adults. The target group will also include enthusiasts with newly-minted PPCDL (Powered Pleasure Craft Driving License). History buffs will be pleased to know that we have allocated time and funding for the cataloguing and conservation of the Club’s archives. It will take many hours of painstaking work to sift through and salvage insectinfested files, discoloured photographs and other paraphernalia that have miraculously survived the passage of time. From the Club’s historic archives, we plan to commission a time-capsule, develop a resource centre and organize support activities that educational institutions and the community can have access to at stipulated times. With 187 years of history, the Club certainly has much to preserve for future generations. This is the legacy that we, as members of RSYC, can take great pride in. On behalf of the RSYC Committee, I wish you good health, happiness and success in the year ahead. Cheers! Inez Wei Honorary Secretary Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
Dear Members of RSYC, A Very Happy New Year to All. I am honoured and privileged to join the RSYC family. I would like to thank the members that have welcomed me to the Club, and I look forward to meeting more of you over the next several weeks, when you come to use the facilities and services that the Club has to offer. RSYC members have many things to look forward to in the first two months of 2014. First, we have the opening of the new wing at the Marina Lodge. Members are encouraged to make a reservation for the family to try out these exquisitely furnished rooms at a special introductory rate, which includes breakfast for two. Don’t wait too long, because there is already a waitlist for the peak periods. This is followed by our Chinese New Year celebrations. The F&B team has prepared a feast of Chinese dishes for the celebratory meals during Chinese
New Year. There will be the traditional lion dancers prancing around the Club, bringing luck and good fortune to all. Do bring the entire family for this festive event. We are also preparing a sumptuous meal for “everybody’s birthday” with Hong Baos and sweets delivered by “Cai Shen Ye.” This is an extremely popular banquet, so please do make your reservation early. We shall prepare a promotional flyer with your next statement of accounts, that will allow you to quickly reference what is going on at the Club over the Chinese New Year period. This is an exciting time for the Club, with a host of new events and programmes we are planning throughout the calendar year. Our aim is to make sure you keep coming back to RSYC, your home away from home. Trevor De Silva General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

COMPLIMENTS FOR OUR STAFF We recently received some very nice compliments for our staff from users of the Club’s facilities, and feel we should share these sentiments with our members and colleagues. So here goes: From Ms Lim Lai Lee, Assistant Manager Human Resource at Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology, to Mr Benjamin Tan, F&B Manager RSYC: “I would like to express my appreciation for Ms Bella Teo (F&B Admin Executive) and Mr Rahman (Asst Banquet Operations Manager) for their contributions in organizing our meeting at the RSYC last week. In a span of about two weeks, Bella offered great assistance to finalise the key logistics, e.g. venue and meals requirements, additional room, submission of the proposal to the e-Procurement system, etc. She is professional, efficient, patient and offered suggestions at suitable times. In support of the activities of the actual day of events, Mr Rahman was very helpful and prompt in providing for the event needs… He is professional in carrying out his work, readily available and offered advice where required. Thank you so much for their support.”
From Mr Mark Richie Tan (a Club member who held his wedding here) to Mr Rahman: “Thank you for making my wedding a memorable and wonderful experience. You have been amazing that night. Keeping the food constantly filled up and managing the banquet with such experience. The guests always had their glasses filled and the feedback they gave me was that the service was fabulous. Even the food and drinks ordering before the dinner was made so convenient, when Rahman told the staff at The Wharf to just charge it to him. Even the coordination of my mother’s birthday celebration in the midst of my wedding was executed with perfection and my mother felt special. Many commented that it was a beautiful wedding and it would not be had it not been for your tireless effort.” From Ms Carine Song of Aon Singapore (Broking Centre) Pte Ltd to F&B Dept: “We would like to compliment Ms Bella Teo for the excellent service she provided us when our company held our annual FSPG Asia Conference 2013… Ms Teo helped us to sort out all the logistic needs for the conference as it was a last-minute arrangement. Her professionalism and ability to get to the bottom of the situation quickly exceeded our expectations. Such a Continue on page 6

After operating some nine months without a general manager, all of us at RSYC are delighted to welcome Mr Trevor De Silva as GM from 9 December 2013. Mr De Silva, 48, has experienced most aspects of the hospitality industry in his 20-year career. here has been a flurry of activities at the Club in recent weeks, largely because of the year-end seasonal events and also the welcome arrival of our new general manager. I think exciting days are ahead as our relatively new Events personnel comprising Cassandra Ee and Events Manager Joel Gwee gain their stride. Witness the successful Charity Cruise just concluded and reported here on pages 8 to 12. With some help from Marina Manager Foo Say Juan, we now have another big event coming up – the Flotilla to Nongsa Point in Batam, Indonesia – on 15 to 17 March 2014, to take advantage of the Singapore school holidays. Boating and non-boating members will recall the first “flotilla” event organized by Say Juan which was a sell-out event in May last year. Do sign-up early if you want to be assured of a place! By the way, Joel this month takes up the additional responsibility of sea sports manager. His email is joel.gwee@ rsyc.org.sg. See page 26 for details of the trip to Nongsa event.
USE OF PERSONAL CONTACT INFORMATION As some of you may know, the Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (PDPA) establishes a general data protection law in Singapore which covers the use and disclosure of individuals’ personal data by organizations. One of its provisions is the “Do Not Call” phone registry that comes into effect on 2 January 2014. This means we will not be able to contact members via SMS or e-blasts in future, unless given specific permission by you to do so. We need to follow up on this matter later. One final note: This issue of the RSYC magazine will be my last issue, after a little more than five years. It has been a pleasure knowing so many of you members and I wish Singapore’s oldest club with a unique heritage many more years of successful activities. K.C. Yuen Editor, RSYC Magazine
MARINA LODGE UPDATE We now hope to open the new Marina Lodge rooms in January when we expect to get the TOP (temporary occupation permit). As you can see on the cover of this magazine, the new accommodation rooms look very inviting and the soft opening rates for members are simply irresistible. What a grand way to spend the Chinese New Year or celebrate a special occasion at the Club. The new Mahjong Room on Level 2 is also ready to move to larger premises when TOP is obtained. Watch for the latest announcements on the Club notice board.
Continue from page 4 commitment to great customer service is to be commended. You can be sure that we will continue to do business with RSYC for years to come.” From Mr Andrew Wee (a member) on the Sunday Roast in June 2013: “I would like to compliment (the staff ) on the dinner on Sunday. Although the haze was quite bad, the turnout was very good. Food combination was simple but good and the pricing was very reasonable. My compliments to all for the event. Well done, good work.” From Ms Helen Murphy to Ms Bella Teo on 13 December 2013: “Just a note to say a huge thank you to you and your team for the fantastic night we had at the RSYC last Saturday

night for the IMC’s annual Christmas party. Everyone had a really great time. Many thanks.”
THE 2014 SAILING CALENDAR For the serious sailors, the first yachting event of the year is the 20th Singapore Straits Regatta (SSR) from 14 to 18 January. At the time of writing, a total of 18 entries have been received by the organizers, and this includes for the first time five yachts in the laser SB20 class, competing in the SB20 Asia Pacific championships. According to the SSR website www. straitsregatta.com, the skippers’ briefing is on 14 January at 12 noon at One degree 15 Marina Club. Racing will be held on the three days, from 16 to 18 January, with three races daily. The closing and prize-giving dinner will be
on Saturday 18 Jan at 7.00pm. Sanctioned by the Singapore Sailing Federation, the SSR is supported by the six sailing clubs in Singapore and Nongsa Point Marina from Batam, Indonesia.
RSYC REGATTA The dates for the annual RSYC Regatta which is usually held in July, have yet to be fixed. Those who are interested in serving on the organizing committee are encouraged to contact our general manager (email gm@rsyc.org.sg). K.C. Yuen Editor, RSYC Magazine

Dragon boating is a sport that has its roots in ancient China and its history has been traced back to more than 2000 years. Today, the sport is popular around the world, especially in Asia and dragon boat racing has been termed as the modern sport with ancient tradition. Highly-valued as a team building sport, dragon boating requires teamwork, mental and physical strength and good communication between team members to achieve optimum synchrony and speed. We are looking to form a RSYC Dragon Boat Team, which is made up of 12 or 22 crew members, consisting of 10 or 20 paddlers, a drummer who sets the pace and a steersperson who helms the boat. Do give us your support and we hope to have your participation!
