AT THE HELM

COMMODORE’S MESSAGE to achieve performance excellence. The latest revised edition of the bylaws has been placed in the members’ area of the RSYC website and is available for members to access at their convenience.

Dear fellow members, Three quarters of the year has passed. It is time to take stock and reflect on the progress achieved in the last 10 months. FOOD & BEVERAGE In June, The Bridge Restaurant re-opened as the Bridge Bistro together with the Beacon Bar under a new operator, I-Concept. The Beacon Bar continues to be the favourite watering hole in the evening for many of our members. The seafront Bistro offers a selection of modern European cuisine with an Asian touch. It is a great place for business discussions over lunch and also for chilling out after a long day at work. Do come by for a cocktail or two as you take in the glorious sight of the setting sun over the horizon before you enjoy a sumptuous dinner prepared by the innovative Chef. The menu of The Wharf has been revamped to provide a wider variety of choices including the popular Tze Char dishes. Service staff have been trained to provide better service to the members. I am confident that The Wharf will be able to achieve the desirable target I highlighted at the AGM – that is, to have 2000 members with their families dining at the The Wharf every month. You can do your part to help us achieve our target. Our new sales team has been working extremely hard to promote banqueting events in the Club. I urge members to make RSYC the top choice for their private parties and gatherings as well as business functions and corporate events. MARINE Marina Manager Mr. Mohammad Tasrin has worked out a comprehensive maintenance program for the marina since he joined us in July. Maintenance program includes renewal of wooden waler and tie rods of the pontoons, replacement of worn pile guides and brackets etc. He puts standard operation procedures in place and ensures his staff carry out their duties in accordance with the established system and procedures. It is the responsibility of each and every boater of RSYC to follow and abide by the bylaws in order for the Marine Department PAT R O N Former President of Singapore Mr S.R. MARINA LODGE Marina Lodge sales team has worked out various special promotion packages for members and their guests which aim to increase occupancy of the rooms. Only members and their referred guests are able to relax and unwind in tastefully furnished rooms at RSYC’s Marina Lodge (with breakfast for two at The Wharf and welcome drinks) at very attractive rates. We hope that members will not only enjoy staying at the Marina Lodge themselves but will also refer their friends or business associates to RSYC. SEA SPORTS & EVENTS Our Sea Sports Department is bringing back sailing into its Sea Sports Academy. Basic sailing course for young adults of members’ family members and school students aims to cultivate the love for sea sports at a young age. The Commodore’s Day Family Carnival 2015 was successfully held on 2 August in conjunction with SG50 celebration. It is very heartening to see so many members with their family members coming to the Club to enjoy a day of joy and fun. RECIPROCAL CLUBS Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron and South of Perth Yacht Club have entered into reciprocal agreements with RSYC, bringing the total number of reciprocal clubs to 106. Please request for an introductory letter from our Membership Department before you travel to visit the clubs overseas. LOOKING AHEAD 2016 marks the Club’s 190th anniversary and the management and committee are working to create more opportunities for social and recreational activities for members; and ultimately bring more members back to the Club. Sea Sports Department has commenced planning for the RSYC Regatta next year. RSYC Regatta is the event we must continue to carry on to highlight the heritage of the Club.

Tender for the breakwater construction will be issued once official approval from MPA is received. The committee has initiated discussion with the relevant authorities on extension of land lease. Update of the development will be made available to members in due time. UPCOMING EVENTS & ACTIVITIES Our annual charity cruise will be held on 14 November. We hope more members will come forward to take part in the event. The New Year’s Eve Countdown Party will be another event that you should not miss. Booking is now open, so please register early to avoid disappointment. HAPPY HOLIDAYS On behalf of members of the RSYC Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members and their families a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! If you have any feedback on any areas for improvements at the Club, please send it to commodore@rsyc.org.sg I would reiterate what we’ve said before, that RSYC is our Club and its survival depends solely on support from all of us! I look forward to seeing you around the Club. WEE KENG HWEE Commodore Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

THE ADVENTURES OF CHAS FROM TAS Most sailors around the world who have been active in ocean racing or long passages over the last fifty years will undoubtedly recognize the name – Charles P. Blundell – better known as ‘Chas From Tas’.

One of the last celestial navigators, Charles has raced for teams from the United States, Great Britain, Sweden, Hong Kong, Brazil and New Zealand in high profile yachting events worldwide.

Charles Blundell – born in Devon, England with a family connection to Sir Francis Drake – descended from a maritime background, including ships captains, pilot captains and the master carvers of the naval dockyard at Plymouth in Devon. His family later immigrated to Tasmania, Australia, where Charles first went to sea at a tender age of twelve.

Known in virtually every blue water sailing harbour on this planet, from Auckland to the Solent, from Hong Kong to Newport and all points between the compass, Charles has covered well over 500,000 nautical miles at sea (approximately one-and-ahalf times the distance to the moon and back), and has survived every possible nautical peril from typhoons to pirate attacks.

For over five decades at sea, he has worked on various vessels – commercial fishing boats, ocean mining ships, exploration vessels and a reef diving submarine – but he is best known as an offshore sailor and delivery skipper, one of the very few delivery skippers ever to be insured by Lloyd’s of London.

Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of his acquaintance knows, he is a great raconteur and his life has been a constant litany of adventures (and misadventures), hilarious mishaps, misunderstandings and fantastic dangers, making him one of the greatest sea-faring adventurers in modern times, and a legend in the yachting world.

To read more about Charles and his adventures, readers may are invited to purchase his memoirs at www.bit.ly/chasfromtas

HERITAGE

THE FOUNDING YEAR OF THE SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB (SYC) The date of the founding of the Singapore Yacht Club (SYC), the ancestor of the RSYC has been the subject of some confusion. Several authors have claimed that the SYC was founded in 1834. However, there is evidence that the Club was already active as early as 1826, and that it was quite probably founded in that year. The evidence comes from the Singapore Chronicle, Singapore’s first newspaper. The following passage appeared on the front page of the Singapore Chronicle of Thursday 15 February 1827: Wednesday the 7th instant, the anniversary of the formation of the Singapore Yacht Club, was fixed on by the members as a proper day for a survey of the four and a half fathom bank which had, we suppose erroneously, been reported dangerous, as the Singapore Yacht Club sounded all over it and had no less water than 4 fathoms and found Ross’s soundings generally quite correct. It would be well if Captains of Ships would communicate to us any difference they might detect in the surrounding hereabouts provided they were sure their leadsmen did his duty correctly. We feel assured the zeal of the S.Y.C. would prove the truth or otherwise of such notices. Since the passage above refers to 7 February 1827 as the anniversary of the formation of the Club, it seems likely that the Club was founded on 7 February 1826. Further evidence for this date is provided by the following notice, which appeared in the Singapore Chronicle on Thursday 26 April 1827: With reference to the XXth Resolution of a meeting of the “Singapore Yacht Club” held on the eleventh day of February 1826, it was deceided at the xvth monthly meeting of the S.Y.C. held at the house of Wm. Montgomerie Esq. President, on the fourteenth day of April 1827, That part of the funds of the club should be set aside for distribution in prizes to such Europeans or Natives as should be considered entitled to reward for improvements in Naval Architecture, and that A gold medal value ten guineas, or fifty dollars in money, should be awarded to the person who produced on or before the 31st day of December 1827, the best Cargo Boat, of not less than 8 coyans, of handy rig, and weatherly, drawing not more than 3 feet when loaded, calculated to keep goods dry in all weathers, and of Singapore build. Candidates for the Medal will be pleased to make their wishes known to the Secretary, who will afford all information required upon the subject, and give due notice to the Committee of the S.Y.C. appointed to decide on all claims – (Signed) Wm. Montgomerie, President. Singapore 20th April 1827. The passage quoted above not only indicates that there was a meeting of the Club in February 1826, but it also indicates that the Club was founded at that time, since the meeting in April 1827 is described as the “xvth” monthly meeting – if the fifteenth monthly meeting was in April 1827, then the first monthly meeting would have been in Feburary 1826. The Singapore Yacht Club was quite possibly the first yacht club in Asia. The fact that the meeting in April 1827 was held in William Montgomerie’s home could indicate that the Club had no clubhouse at that time. If this was the case, it would certainly not have been without precedent in the nineteenth century, even some clubs in the United Kingdom were without clubhouses. Another source shows that, by August 1826, the members of the Singapore Yacht Club had installed a beacon on a rock in the mouth of the Singapore River. This article – first published in the July/August 2000 edition of RSYC Magazine – confirms the founding date of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club.

EIN PROSIT, EIN PROSIT, EIN PROSIT! While the haze covered the evening skies on Friday 23 October, the drinking, eating and merry-making made its way to the Quarterdeck, where over 100 members and guests gathered for an evening of Bavarian revelry. Emceed by Mr Nigel Ho, the celebration kicked off to a great start with traditional Oktoberfest performances by the highly sought after band – the Swiss Alpine Lions. A delectable spread of German cuisine filled empty tummies and were washed down with copious amounts of “weissbier”. The merry-making continued with a variety of games, quizzes and challenges, all fervently partcipated by the revellers. The “train” dance encapsulated the spirit of the evening and saw many, if not all, of the attendees getting up from their long benches to join in the camaraderie. As the cheer goes – EIN PROSIT, EIN PROSIT, EIN PROSIT – we’ll see you again at next year’s Oktoberfest, hopefully, without the dreaded haze! JOIN US AT THESE EVENTS...

DOCKSIDE

HAZE ADVISORY FOR PLEASURE BOATERS Of recent, many of us will have been affected one way or another by the onset of the hazy conditions. In view of keeping the safety of Singapore’s waterways, the Maritime Port Authority (MPA) has released a notice regarding the conduct of pleasure crafts during reduced visibility in the port of Singapore. As per the notice released on 10 September 2015, below are five points that pleasure boaters need to take special note of during a surge of the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI). CONDUCT OF PLEASURE CRAFT DURING REDUCED VISIBILITY IN THE PORT OF SINGAPORE 1. Visibility in the Port of Singapore may be affected due to prolonged and widespread haze or other environmental factors. In the interest of safety of navigation and life at sea,

the Port Master may restrict the movement of pleasure craft in the port waters during reduced visibility conditions. 2. Owner/master and marina operators of pleasure craft are advised to exercise judgment and where possible to restrict their movements within the port waters to a minimum during reduced visibility conditions. 3. Owner/master and marina operators of pleasure craft will be duly notified to restrict pleasure craft movements if the state of visibility reduces to less than 0.5 nautical miles. For pleasure craft intending to enter or depart port, the Port Master may grant an exemption, on condition that the craft is fitted with operational radar and electronic positional fixing equipment. The requests for such exemptions can be directed to the

TIME TO REFILL MY FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Marine Safety Control Centre at Tel: +65 6325 2488 / +65 6325 2489 or email: pms@ mpa.gov.sg 4. Owner/master and marina operators of pleasure craft will also be duly notified when the restriction on pleasure craft movements is lifted (when visibility condition increases to more than 0.5 nautical miles). 5. Any queries relating to this notice should be directed to Capt Andy Chew (Tel: 6325 2472) or Capt Henry Heng (Tel: 67737433). We strongly encourage boaters to pre-plan their trip well before departing the from Club, drink more water while on your boat and reduce exposure to the haze by putting on a suitable filtration mask (such as N95) if the haze goes into the unhealthy range (PSI 100 or more). For more information about the haze, please visit www.haze.gov.sg

APPROVAL REQUIRED FOR VESSEL BERTHING AT PULAU HANTU BESAR, HANTU KECHIL, KUSU, ST JOHN’S AND PULAU SERINGAT JETTIES

Attention all boaters! Have you checked the expiry date and the safety gauge on your fire extinguisher tank/s on your boat? If you have not, you may want to check and make sure it is still in working condition and avoid any inconvenience later on. In a bid to ensure the safety of the marina, the Club has arranged for all boaters to have their portable fire extinguisher/s to be sent for servicing at a reasonable price. All you have to do is bring along your portable fire extinguisher/s on Friday 4 December 2015 from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm to the Security Guardhouse.

Please be informed that all vessels must seek approval from Sentosa Development Corporation to berth at the Pulau Hantu Besar, Hantu Kechil, Kusu, St John’s and Pulau Seringat jetties. Approval can be sought by emailing administrator@sentosa.com.sg with the following information:

Our appointed contractor will collect your portable fire extinguisher/s, advice you on any faulty parts (if any) and the fees you need to pay for refilling your fire extinguisher/s. The collection date after the servicing will be on Monday 7 December 2015 from 9.30am to 4.30pm at the Security Guardhouse.

● Date and time of arrival and departure; ● Vessel name/no; ● Vessel length; ● Vessel carrying capacity; ● Jetty visit.

Don’t forget to bring along the cash payable upon collection of your fire extinguisher/s. All payments will be made directly to our appointed contractor.

Approval must be sought at least 7 working days in advance.

We hope to have your participation as we move towards serving you better.
