GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE
GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE Dear Members, On behalf of the staff of RSYC, let me thank you for your generous contribution to the yearly’s Staff Hong Bao Fund. This token of your generosity will go a long way in showing your support and appreciation for the staff who is here to make the Club a better place to visit, for you and your family. Chinese New Year (CNY) is around the corner, and our F&B Team has planned the Reunion meals for you and your family. New Year starts early at RSYC – from 14 January, so you can order the CNY traditional goodies for takeaways or indulge in our Special CNY dishes at the Wharf. Do also look out for the Steamboat Reunion Dinner at The Wharf on 4th February. Do also save the date to come to the Club on 6th & 11th February for the annual Lion and Dragon Dance, to usher in the peace and prosperity for the year. Please note the CNY operational hours on page 42 during this festive period. We are pleased to announce that the Beacon Bar is now back in full operations. We will be open from 4pm to 10PM on Mon to Thurs and 4PM to 12AM on Fri to Sun. The F&B Team will be gradually converting it to Whisky Bar over the next few months and we are excited for the new changes and will share with you more details when the plans are finalized. As some of you might be aware, we have reopened our gym on 8th December 2018 with much fanfare. The enhancement
included bringing down the walls and closing the Multi-Purpose Room permanently to make way for the expansion of the Gym, installation of new machines and mirror. The enhancement was not a major one but we believe it still serves our objective of better serving members and improving the overall appearance of the popular facility. Most members had commented that they welcome the larger and brighter workout space and are appreciative of the new exercise equipment installed. Feeling lethargic and need help with your exercise regime? Let Mr Robin Lim guide you through a realistic fitness programme using the most efficient and safe techniques. Our Sea Sports Department is also being tasked to take on the challenge of providing a comprehensive programme of sailing courses. We have been conducting basic sailing courses including Optimist, Pico and keelboat competency courses since Nov 2018 and would be targeting more of such age groups and even young working adults to draw them into the yachting lifestyle. The Events & Sea Sport Department is working hard to invigorate and introduce new activities to Members, such as organizing hands-on workshops, shopping tours, outings and many more. We welcome feedback and suggestion on what Members would like us to organize as we move to make our activities the talk of the Club.
With so many events and promotions planned for you, we hope to see you and your family around the Club. Here’s wishing all of you a Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year. Best regards, CLAUDIO SCHETTINO General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

STUNNING SAILING ADVENTURE AROUND THE WORLD: Interview with Tilly
Sailing brings adventurers to some of the world’s most beautiful and isolated corners of the earth. We had the opportunity to catch up with Ms Tilly Eichler who sails around the world with Captain Klaus Hohberg on his beautiful sailing yacht LAPITA and to interview her about their sailing adventures. LAPITA is currently docked at RSYC for a brief stopover in Singapore until early Jan 2019 before they are advancing to cross the Indian Ocean.
Fiji Island
New Caledonia
RSYC: Can you tell us a little about your adventures – how you and Klaus met, where you went and what you did Tilly: Klaus sails around the world and was looking for the perfect sailing companion, I also wanted to sail around the world and was looking for a great captain and the perfect ship. We met in Sept 2016 on the San Blas Islands in Panama while I was on another yacht sailing around the Caribbean. When I heard about the opportunity to cross the Pacific on this amazingly beautiful and comfortable yacht, I quickly took up the chance and joined Klaus. Our adventures started off on the awesome San Blas Islands, from there we passed through the Panama Canal. Once on the Pacific side of the canal we crossed the massive expanse of the Pacific Ocean visiting countless islands and unexplored worlds including the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, American Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. We spent the cyclone season in New Zealand, where we did a lot of repair work on the ship. In the beginning of May the cyclone season had finished and we sailed back to the South Seas to explore New Caledonia and Vanuatu. From Vanuatu, we continued our journey and headed for the 2200 nautical miles long route via the Coral Sea and past Papua New Guinea through the Torres Strait to Indonesia. There we sailed around the spectacular Raja Ampat Archipelago, enjoying the amazing anchorages in hidden lagoons and the stunning underwater world. On our journey to Singapore we spent some time exploring the beautiful island of Bali by car and even stopped by at Anak Krakatau, an active volcano where we saw a large ash cloud erupting. Before we headed to Singapore, we visited Belitung Island and admired its impressive granite formations. On board I am the chef as well as the route planner which includes that I take care of all the administrative stuff and formalities across the countries we visit. And I am the board photographer. Of course, Klaus is the captain, taking care of everything including the repair works on the ship.

RSYC: Can you share how Klaus and yourself financed your travels and what your monthly budget was? Tilly: Klaus had always the dream of sailing around the world. When he was 18 years old, he worked for three years as the assistant of the engineer on huge cargo ship. He knew that he would need a lot of capital to finance his dream so he worked hard during his younger days and built up a successful aircon business in Germany and Saudi Arabia as well as a prosperous restaurant in Portugal. After he had sold off all his businesses he bought the 1989 built Jongert 20s in 2009. It took him almost 5 years to refit the ship before he could finally start his circumnavigation in 2015. Running such a sailing yacht is no small undertaking and our monthly budget can be quite high depending on what needs to be done and which parts have to be replaced. In particular, the cost of marinas and lifting have increased enormously in recent years. RSYC: What is a memory that never fails to make you smile during your adventures? Tilly: To visit the stunningly beautiful remote islands in Panama, French Polynesia and Raja Ampat and anchor in hidden lagoons where we can swim and snorkel around the coral reefs is definitely the best thing about sailing around the world. It is also very exciting to observe dolphins playing in the waves at the bow and to watch whales jutting out of the sea. Experiencing the amazing world we live in – meeting new people and new cultures – the learning is limitless. We have truly visited some of the most remote places in the world and have experienced many real magical moments.
“Follow your dream and don’t let others’ opinions bother you as you only live once.” -Tilly
RSYC: What is life like afterwards? What you planning to do next? Tilly: We will most likely explore Malaysia and Thailand before crossing the Indian Ocean heading to South Africa. Of course, on the way we will stop over at some more dream destinations like Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Seychelles and Madagascar. One day I will probably return to Germany, going back to work in Research as I have a PhD in Psychology.
Banda Islands at Indonesia
RSYC: What would you say to someone who is inspired by this but is fearful about the impact on careers, how they’d fund it? Tilly: Before you start your sailing journey, safe enough money because it will be more expensive than you expect. And you have to be aware that you need to know how to do almost all the repair works on your ship (or have an engineer with you) as it’s difficult to get help at the open sea. I would like to end off by saying just follow your dream and don’t let others’ opinions bother you as you only live once.

DOCKSIDE
DOCKSIDE PERSONAL MOBILITY DEVICES NOT ALLOWED ON MARINE PONTOONS In line with the Singapore government in tightening the regulations for riding of Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) in public area, we would like to inform members that PMDs include but not limited to bicycle, electric scooter, kick scooter and unicycle are not permitted on the marina pontoons for safety reason. PMDs can only be ridden on the driveways on shore at very low speed of 10 km/ hr. Riders have to dismount and push/walk their device when they are on the ramps, pontoons & fingers. Boaters have to strictly store the devices on their boats and not parked on the pontoons or fingers. Your kind cooperation is much appreciated.
REMINDER: BRING YOUR PPCDL CARD WHEN OUT AT SEA Recently, we have encountered cases where Members did not carry their PPCDL card when spot-checked by Police Coast Guard on duty. Please be reminded to bring along your valid PPCDL licensewhen you are out at sea. A photocopy of your license is also acceptable if you are afraid of losing your physical card. Your kind cooperation is much appreciated.
SZH & SR BERTHING INCREMENT FROM 1ST JANUARY 2019 RSYC will be introducing the new rates for all SZH & SR registered craft effective from 1st January 2019. The new rate will be 2 times the normal member’s rate. If your boat is a multi-hull, you will require to pay 2 times plus 2 times for the new berthing rate. For those who remain under the 2 year lease, you will require to pay the new berthing rental once your lease expires. Do contact Marina Department on 67689234 if you have any further queries.
NO WAKE ZONE It has been reported recently of a spike in boats speeding in/out of our marina, potentially causing damage to the pontoon structure, members’ boats as well as discomfort to fellow boaters. In a worst case scenario, this could also cause a “Man-Over-Board” situation to unsuspecting boaters or other users of the marina. In order to prevent this, we wish to remind all boaters entering/exiting our marina to adhere to the policy of “No Wake Zone”.
