Introduction About this project In this assignment we were given a task to study the vertical transportation in the chosen building and we have to search for the case study of the building to fullfill the task. We decided to study the One city Mall building which is located at Subang Jaya as it adopted vertical transportation in its building services that we can refer as a case study in our assignment

Case Study One City Mall

offering an assortment of retail, food and beverage, entertainment and value-for-money service outlets. Divided into three sections, The Place, and The Garden Shoppe, the shopping mall is wellfrequented for its 12 feet atrium beautifully lit by natural light to each and every floor of the mall. The 10th floor of Sky Park features rooftop restaurants with magnificent views of the city landscape as well as a glass floor offering a dizzying sight of a ten-storey drop. The Place is laden with a host of retail attractions and entertainment outlets while The Garden Shoppe is set in a beautiful garden landscape setting and offers an array of value-for-money services, a number of restaurants and food joints offering local delicacies, and bazaar-styled kiosks selling fashion apparels from independent brands, affordable jewellery and unique trinkets.

Vertical Transportation Definition of Vertical Transportation Vertical Transportation include all kinds of transportation media within buildings, such as lifts, escalators, hydraulic hoists and passengers conveyors etc. It may be considered the most important building services system for high-rise buildings.

Vertical transportation refers to the service component which enables us to travel vertically between floors much quicker and effortlessly. throughout this case study which is One City Mall has 2 forms of transportation system which are elevator and escalator

Elevators Elevator is an transportation device used to move goods and people vertically between floors (levels, decks) of a building vessel, or other structure. Elevators usually provide access for the elderly and disable through the floors of modern offices and public buildings.

Elevators are generally powered by electric motors that either drive traction cables or counterweight system like a hoist, or pump hydraulic fluid to raise cylindrical piston like a jack. The elevators can be broadly classified as either electric traction or hydrolic type

Traction Elevators The type of elevator used in One City Mall that used in One City Sky Park Mall are Traction elevator. Traction Elevator consist of a lift car and counterweight attached to seperate ends of a cable which travels over a large pullery wheel called a sheave at the top of the lift shaft. the counter weight and the lift are intended to balance each other out which means that only a small amount of power is needed to move the lift car up and down

Advantages and Disadvantages of Elevators Advantages suitable for high rise building traction lift more faster than hydraulic lift does not take much space except for the maintainance room safest mode of transportation Disadvantages expensive to maintain longer waiting period especially heavy traffic lesser capacity to transport people and good at a certain time hydraulic lift is slow movement Page 11

Escalator Escalator is a vertical transportation device in the form of a moving staircase a conveyor which carries people between levels of a building. It consist of a motor driven chain of indivually linked steps which remain horizontal, allowing the user to stand still while transporting user to the next level. the escalator provides an immediate means of transportation.

Being able to convey continuously to transport a large number of people.

There're three different types of step with purposes where the limit of the size can can either provide: one passenger only one passenger and 1 child, side by side two passengers, side by side it will provide shorter travel time than elevators as elevators are limited in size and passenger have to wait longer for the service.

The arrangement allow to travel quickly to upper floor wihout feeling the congested of human traffic

Safety features of escalator The escalator shows the safety tips while using the escalators. Protection of passengers during normal operation is secured by number of safety feutures associated with moving stairways hanrails and steps travel at exactly the same speed to assure steadiness and to aid stepping on or off the comb plates the steps must be broad and steady and designed to avoid slipping sensors to trigger automatic shutdown if a component is outside of its normal position skirt brushes to help prevent objects from being caught in the escalator emergency stop button

Problem of Escalator The common problem of escalator in building services is its life span. Escalator requires a periodically maintenance as it is subjected to constant traffic and heavy usage.The cost for maintenance is hefty and attempt to cut short the periodically maintenance will result to unwarranted breakdown and hence distorted its functionality.

Sugesstion to overcame the problem Method of solving the problem : Infrared Motion Sensor This system enables the escalator to slow down and eventually stopwhen nobody is using it. once a passenger is detected by the sensor within a certain distance range on the landing platforms, the infrared beam will be interrupted and the escalator will gradually accelerate to its full speed in just a few seconnds. the escalator will be turned off once the beam path is restored. this system could save energy without the need of running all the time

The Problem of Elevators The Problem of Elevators Long wait times and frequent breakdowns are inconvenient and a sign of wear. Overheating, high energy use, and low power factor may not be obvious problems, but they incur hidden costs.

Implementing simple elevator motor maintenance practices can help decrease expenses and downtime.

Suggestion of solving the problem Method of solving the problems: Infrared inspection Elevators demand a great deal of power from commercial building utility systems, so updates to the system’s voltage can affect motor operations or potentially even damage the elevator system.

Elevators with any history of motor failures or operation issues should undergo a power quality survey.

Infrared thermography measures drastic temperature changes and can identify possible trouble spots before they cause costly system failures. Common faults such as over/under voltage can be seen easily with power quality surveys and fuses that are running hot can be quickly seen with infrared imaging before a motor loses a phase.

Conclusion Vertical Transportation in building services are the main and the most important mode of transportation in and within a building as it connected the spatials start from the basement to ground floor and right up to the upper floor. It provide comfortability to human traffic in and within the building. Vertical transportation are no more a luxury ammeneties but a necessity connectivity in building services
