The Rub Al Khali, or the Empty Quarter, is one of the world’s largest sand deserts, covering an area of 650,000 square kilometres in the southern Arabian Peninsula. The first documented journeys by Westerners through the desert were made by Bertram Thomas and St John Philby in the 1930s, while celebrated English explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger traversed the desert in the 1940s, which he documented in his 1959 travel book Arabian Sands.

One of the world's most dangerous mountain trails, this reopened to visitors last year after a massive €5.5-million refurbishment. Offering spectacular views of southern Spain's rugged landscapes, the 7.7-kilometre walkway, also known as the King's Little Pathway, runs through a narrow gorge in El Chorro village in Spain's Malaga province. REACHING FOR THE SKIES Ghada Mohamed Al Rousi strives for success in the traditionally male-dominated field of aviation, while encouraging other Emirati women to push boundaries TEXT BY CHIRANTI SENGUPTA
» Can you tell us about your role at Air Arabia? I am a second officer on line training, which is part of the Multi-Crew Pilot Licence Training Programme that I pursued at Alpha Aviation Academy. I'll soon be released as a first officer, ready to fly commercial aircraft with two crew members in the flight deck.
» What is your next goal? I’m focusing on completing my line training, which involves flying to 100 sectors under the supervision of designated captain trainers from Air Arabia, so I can step up as a first officer. I will then work at getting experience and flight time to be promoted to the rank of senior first officer. My long-term ambition is to become a captain and eventually work as an instructor.
» Can you tell us about your training at Alpha Aviation Academy? It took around 18 months and entailed ground school and practical training. After completing our practical training
in single-engine aircraft, we spent a lot of time in the academy’s advanced flight simulators.
» Why did you choose this programme? While most pilot-training programmes
» How did your family react to your decision to pursue a career in aviation? My mother was initially very anxious, especially when I had my solo flights in small aircraft. She is more relaxed now as I fly the Airbus A320 and no longer

Slipping on salopettes and hitting the slopes is big business. From Val d'Isère in the French Alps to aristocratic favourite Klosters in Switzerland, snowy escapes have become an annual ritual for countless winter-sports enthusiasts. But you don’t necessarily need to live in Europe or Canada to enjoy the mountain air and powdery slopes. In fact, from Air Arabia’s hub in Sharjah, there are a number of destinations that can be reached in under five hours. While the debate on the merits of snowboarding against traditional skiing may be an enduringly contentious issue, there’s no question regarding the merits of the region’s winter sports opportunities. GULMARG, INDIA Meaning ‘meadow of flowers’ and named after the large number of varieties that exist in the region, Gulmarg was turned into a winter-sports destination by the British in the 1920s. Home to Asia’s longest ski lift, this Himalayan town in Kashmir is also where the first National Winter Games of India were held in 1998. Due to the games, the infrastructure was upgraded and Gulmarg now offers excellent facilities – particularly for beginners or intermediate skiers. More adventurous types can take advantage of the heli-skiing and hit the off-piste slopes. And if you tire of skiing or snowboarding, Gulmarg also offers sledging, ice skating and tobogganing. Incidentally, Gulmarg claims the title of the highest lifted ski resort on the planet – standing at 4,200 metres with a 5.2-kilometre run. The Season – December - April

FUN WINTER-SPORTS FACTS The record for the fastest recorded speed on skis belongs to Italian Simone Origone who, on March 31 2014, was clocked travelling at a hair-raising 252.632 kph. Snowboarding was originally known as snurfing – the name given by Sherman Poppen, an engineer from Michigan, US. In 1965, Poppen bound two skis together to create a ‘snurf’ for his daughter. It’s thought that Poppen was inspired by skateboarding. In 1996, as part of a marketing campaign, sportswear colossus Nike paid two Kenyan long-distance runners to compete in Olympic cross-country skiing. Philip Kimely Boit managed to qualify for the main race but ended up finishing in last position.
GUDAURI, GEORGIA Lying at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, the former Soviet republic of Georgia offers reliable snowfall and a well-maintained, modern infrastructure. At an altitude of more than 7,000 metres above sea level, Gudauri is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Tbilisi. With a low avalanche risk, more adventurous (and wealthy) wintersport aficionados also have the opportunity to utilise the local heli-skiing services, where you can carve through fresh snow on slopes that are only accessible by helicopter. In fact, on balance, the Georgian Caucasus makes a lot of sense. Costs such as ski passes are far cheaper than they are in the Alps, the local population is genuinely warm and friendly and it’s far less crowded than resorts such as Meribel or Alpe d'Huez in France. MZAAR, LEBANON Take a short flight to Beirut, once called the Paris of the Middle East, then drive one hour to Mzaar ski resort to experience the Lebanese slopes. With the highest peak of Mount Mzaar stretching to almost 2,500 metres, the country’s finest resort not only offers breathtaking views but also 80 kilometres of slopes of varying difficulty levels, making it the largest resort in the Middle East. The first commercial skiing dates back to the 1960s, when pioneers imported a ski lift from Switzerland and opened the first chalets. In keeping with the hedonistic and European character of the nearby Lebanese capital, the après-ski atmosphere rivals anything you’ll come across in the Alps. Neighbouring Faqra Village offers a number of different international cuisines, nightlife venues and entertainment. Faqra also holds the impressive accolade of the being the country’s highest village. The Season – December - April

SHYMBULAK, KAZAKHSTAN Two years ago, the resort of Shymbulak, half an hour from Almaty, got a royal stamp of approval. In 2014, British Prince Harry paid a visit to the slopes, instantly raising its cachet among the discerning international jet set. Princes aside, if winter-sports enthusiasts were to cast their eye over Shymbulak, they’d discover a very different beast to the crumbling Soviet-era resort of 10 years ago. Now it’s a destination for the country’s wealthy elite, including President Nazarbayev, whose bodyguards seal off the run when he hits the piste.
Shymbulak is not all just about the powerful elite though. With ski schools and night skiing several times a week, the city’s middle classes also utilise the resort. Another big draw is the area's sunny climate. In fact, some Kazakhs claim that the sun is shining 90 per cent of the time, so remember to pack sunglasses. The Season – December – April

The Venice Carnival dates back to 1162. It’s believed that the initial celebration occurred as a result of the Venetians’ military victory over Ulrich II of Aquileia. After the unfortunate Ulrich was captured, the Pope was forced to intervene and the Venetians agreed to release their enemy for a ransom. The ransom they agreed upon was an annual tribute of one bull, 12 pigs and 300 loaves. In celebration of their triumph over Ulrich, the animals were sacrificed by the Venetian authorities in a public ceremony. This ritual then became an annual event and the anniversary was celebrated for hundreds of years. In 1797, the Carnival was outlawed. The man responsible, Napoleon Bonaparte, was rampaging through Europe with his army and overwhelmed the Venetians. Following Bonaparte’s victory over the Austrians, the French leader claimed large swathes of their territory. As a compromise, in the Campo Formio peace treaty, the French aggressor agreed to cede control of Venice to the Austrians, who then outlawed the annual festivities. It wasn’t until 1979 that the

Venetians took the decision to reinstate the carnival and now it attracts millions of participants each year. JANUARY 31 If you’re lucky enough to be in the city on this day, then you’ll get to witness one of the more peculiar aspects of what is often a fairly peculiar event. The Volo dell’Angelo (flight of the angel) is where the winner of a beauty pageant gets to descend from the campanile in St Mark’s square on a zip wire. FEBRUARY 9 Judged by a panel of fashion movers and shakers, the best costume prize is serious business over the duration of the carnival. OF CULTURE The small island nation of Bahrain is a hub of history, culture and contemporary art
It might surprise you to discover that the small island nation of Bahrain is home to one of the world’s oldest civilisations. A quick trip to Qal’at Al Bahrain – a UNESCO World Heritage Site marked by a 16th-century Portuguese fort sitting atop five layers of civilisation – will introduce you to the archaeological remains of the Dilmun. Inside the Bahrain National Museum, you can view ancient artefacts on display and discover the ruins of houses, palaces, temples and tombs dating as far back as 3,000 BC. Meaning ‘Two Seas’ in Arabic, Bahrain's focus is not the island’s minimal land mass, but the shallow waters that lap its shores. While the sweetwater springs that bubble offshore helped bring about 5,000 years of settlement, the waters also
encouraged lustrous pearls – the trade that helped to build the island’s fortune. Today, visitors who wish to experience diving for treasure themselves can go on a pearling expedition from Al Dar Island and if you’re lucky enough to find an authentic Bahraini pearl, you can keep it. Souvenirs don’t get more unique and irreplaceable than that. While cherishing its ancient heritage, Bahrain has also embraced contemporary culture. The magnificent new Bahrain National Theatre, built in 2012, has become a major player in the region, hosting classical and modern performances from the world’s most pre-eminent artists including Spanish opera superstar Placido Domingo, legendary Greek composer Yanni, the Bolshoi and

Initiated by two Bahrainis, who wanted to create a space for artists, performers and designers to play, Malja is another creative hub worth a visit. For a cultural shopping expedition, head off bright and early to Muharraq for a walking tour of the former capital and heart of the pearling trade. Start at Shaikh Isa House, once the seat of government and an impressive example of Gulf Islamic architecture, complete with a working wind tower. Follow the signs to Seyadi House, a former pearl merchant’s home and tour the restored houses, each showcasing a different aspect of Bahrain’s heritage – embroidery, the history of the press, traditional music. Find your way to Shaikh Hamad Avenue, which runs through Muharraq Souq, where you can shop at the popular Mohammed Showaiter Sweets – try the saffronand rosewater-infused Bahraini halwa. Then head to Manama

Souq for some local shopping. Start at Bab Al Bahrain, an arched structure built in 1949 to mark the souq’s entrance. There is a new section with a contemporary mall selling Bahraini and imported handicrafts, but you can also wander through myriad alleyways to hunt for the best bargains on
everything from fabric and carpets to jewellery and souvenirs. Finally, take some time to visit Al Fateh Mosque, one of the largest in the world with seating for up to 7,000 worshippers under a 60-tonne fibreglass dome. Apart from viewing the design detailing, from the gleaming

7 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BAHRAIN Bahraini pearls are the most valuable in the world. From the 1850s to the 1930s, they were considered more valuable than diamonds. The pearling trade changed dramatically when Japan developed cultured pearls. Today, it is illegal to trade cultured pearls on the island. The Bahraini flag used to be pure red until 1820 when Bahrain signed a treaty with the UK, and then a white stripe was added to indicate the truce. The five points of the serrated edge symbolise the five pillars of Islam. The Bahraini dinar is the secondstrongest currency in the world (after the Kuwait dinar). One Bahraini dinar is equal to about US$2.65. Bahrain is the Arabic word for “two seas” because there are places where salt water and fresh water overlap in the sea north of Bahrain. In these spots, fresh water bubbles up in the middle of the salt water. Bahrain is not only one island, but an archipelago of 33 small islands. Each island is connected by bridges. In addition to its unique architecture, the Bahrain World Trade Centre is the world’s first skyscraper that uses wind turbines for clean energy. The 240-metre-tall tower has won several international awards for sustainability. In 1932, Bahrain was the first place oil was discovered in the Arabian Gulf. Oil production has significantly increased in recent years, yielding around 40,000 barrels a day last year.

Just as upmarket boutique Anokhi is worth visiting for its block printed textiles, furnishing and accessories, so too are the Gem Palace and Amrapali for their handcrafted jewellery. Take a shopping break at Anokhi café and enjoy the fine selection of teas, sandwiches and desserts.

Evening
Located just 20 kilometres away from the downtown area, Chokhi Dhani, a thematic Rajasthani village, offers a glimpse into the rustic life in the state. While it is a busy tourist stop, it’s worth indulging in an evening at this village, complete with folk performances, a village fair, camel rides, dining under the stars and puppet shows for the kids.
DAY 2
Morning
Take to the skies in a hot air balloon early in the morning for the best views of the historic forts, palaces and the neighbouring villages. SkyWaltz, a government-approved operator, offers balloon rides over the Pink City at sunrise and sunset. Alternatively, after breakfast, drive to the Nahargarh Fort, standing on a rugged ridge of the Aravallis mountain range, for a spectacular view of the city. Back in town, stop at some of the city’s excellent art spaces. Naila Art Gallery, located within the premises of a heritage hotel, Juneja Art Gallery and the Albert Hall Museum offer visitors an exciting art experience.

Afternoon
Head for the iconic Jaipur eatery on Johri Bazaar, Laxmi Mishtan Bhandar (LMB), for a relaxed all-you-can-eat Rajasthani thali (platter), which you can wash down with its famed sweet yoghurt drink. The restaurant also features an exotic array of sweets and desserts to round off a big lunch.
Evening
Riding an elephant up to the entrance of the magnificent Amber fort – located 11 kilometres away from the city – is a memorable way to experience the surrounding high hills. Stop at the Gallery
Artchill, a unique space featuring vast art corridors and a museum, to appreciate works of contemporary Indian artists. Although the gallery is located in the west wing of the main fort, many tourists miss it, so keep your eyes peeled. It’s best to reach the fort in the late afternoon, so you can explore it before the sun goes down, and watch the sun set over Maota Lake, then dine in the fort’s popular restaurant, 1135 AD. Breathtaking panoramas of Jaipur below and opulent interiors are a perfect complement to 1135 AD’s extensive menu of Rajasthani dishes.

The recently concluded 34th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) 2015 witnessed the honouring of Prince Khalid Al Faisal, adviser to Saudi King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, and Governor of Makkah Province, who was named the Cultural Personality of the Year in recognition of his educational, cultural and humanitarian contributions. Known as the Poet Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Khalid was honoured for his constant pursuit in consolidating the values of tolerance by encouraging intercultural dialogue and interaction. While addressing the gathering of national and international attendees at the SIBF, Prince Khalid praised the initiatives taken by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, PhD, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah since 1972, in preserving and promoting Arab Islamic culture during his almost44-year reign. He gave Dr Shaikh Sultan the title of “Sultan of Culture” and further said that “Sharjah sparks hope.” The SIBF 2015, which opened with an award ceremony, recognised authors and publishing houses that have contributed notably to the promotion of Arab culture. While the award for the best Emirati book by a creative writer went to Hareb Al Dhaheri for Ascension to Heaven, Zeyad Ahmad Mahafza’s Prisoners of Darkness received the award for the best Arabic novel. The best international fiction book award was presented to Sorayya Khan for the novel City of Spies. While addressing the inaugural ceremony of the SIBF, Dr Shaikh Sultan said, “Today, books are the beacon of light against ignorance, leading us to faith and certainty. But there are also some distractions. Thus we cannot reject all books or accept all books. That is why we set up the Sharjah Books Authority to check the contents before releasing the books." He is of the opinion that "books are for peaceful coexistence, especially at a time when the mind is burdened by scores of events taking place across the world.” Dr Shaikh Sultan further urged Arab intellectuals to play an important role

in raising awareness and spreading knowledge and culture, rather than being silent during the critical times in the Arab World. Ahmad Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority and director of the book fair, emphasised that literature should be used as a weapon of progress. Every year, at the SIBF, Dr Shaikh Sultan releases his new books, published by Al Qasimi publications, Sharjah. The SIBF 2015 saw the release of the English versions of Dr Shaikh Sultan’s books, the latest instalment of his memoirs titled Culture, Education and Change (19872004) and Under the Flag of Occupation. His new book Selected Speeches, a collection of speeches delivered by him during his four decades of reign, takes the reader through his vision of One

Nation, One Flag; Arab Islamic culture and heritage; and his generosity in terms of the welfare of people. Three more books published in Arabic received tremendous response from visitors. The SIBF 2015 was visited by 1.4 million people, while it saw the participation of 1,546 publishing houses from 164 countries showcasing more than 1.5 million titles in various languages. The SIBF is now considered one of the largest literary events in the world, gaining international status within its 34 editions. As Dr Shaikh Sultan completes 44 years in his role as Ruler of Sharjah and Member of Supreme Council of the UAE on January 26, this year, I wish him a long, healthy life to pursue his mission of development of culture, education and services to humanity.
Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority launched the 9th annual Sharjah Water festival. This year the event was held from December 16 to 20 at the Khalid Lagoon and Al Majaz Waterfront in the emirate. Among many sponsors, Air Arabia supported the festival as the official airline.
The festival included plenty of new exciting activities such as carnivals, mini stage shows, jet-ski school, free style show and a heritage village, which added more enthusiasm to the event and more cheer to the families and visitors. In addition, there were celebratory activities which marked

ARAB AVIATION AND MEDIA SUMMIT 2015 CONCLUDES WITH POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR REGIONAL AVIATION AND TOURISM
The fifth Arab Aviation and Media Summit (AAMS) got underway in Manama, Bahrain on the 7th and 8th of December which was concluded with speakers in broad agreement about the positive outlook for the Middle East’s aviation and tourism industry, despite the potential impact from a number of existing and emerging challenges. More than 200 industry leaders, government officials and journalists attended the 2015 conference, which this year was held in Manama in partnership with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation & Telecommunications and Bahrain
Airport Company. Among the themes emanating from the conference was the strategically important role that aviation and tourism continue to play in the ongoing development of Arab economies by creating employment, attracting visitors and helping to market cities and countries to overseas investors. There was broad consensus among participants that aviation and tourism are set for a period of sustained growth in the Middle East, driven particularly by internal demand and the growing importance of the neighbouring regions of
Africa and Asia. However, some participants believe growth will be significantly higher if key issues such as infrastructure and regulatory constraints, environmental concerns, the slowdown in world trade, and the need to recruit tens of thousands of skilled professionals, are dealt with effectively. This year's edition of the event also featured 'The Little Engineer' workshop, an edutainment workshop that aims to instill a passion for science, technology and engineering among young nationals, as well as a special IMAX screening of ‘Living in the age of airplanes’ a National Geographic production documentary film. Both were supported by Airbus and Air Arabia. The AAMS is industry-led initiative supported by organizations including Airbus Middle East, Air Arabia Group, CFM, Amadeus, Alpha Aviation and ITP Group, among others. The event is held in a different Arab city each year with details of the next host city scheduled to be announced in mid-2016.

7و 8ديسمبر ،وقد اختتمت أعمالها بإجماع

الشيخ الدكتور سلطان" :تعد الكتب اليوم منارة للنور تدحض ظالم الجهل ،وتقودنا إلى اإليمان واليقين .لكن يوجد بعض االنحرافات أيضًا، ومن ثم ال يمكننا رفض جميع الكتب أو قبولها جميعًا .ولهذا السبب بالذات أنشأنا هيئة الشارقة للكتاب للتحقق من المحتوى قبل إصدار الكتب" .كما يرى سموه أن "الكتب وسيلة للتعايش السلمي ،وخصوصًا في الوقت الذي يصبح فيه العقل مثق ً ال بعشرات األحداث التي تجري في جميع أنحاء العالم". وحث الشيخ الدكتور سلطان المثقفين العرب بشدة على لعب دور فعال في التوعية ونشر المعرفة والثقافة ،بدالً من التزام الصمت في األوقات الحرجة التي تمر بالعالم العربي. وأكد أحمد بن ركاض العامري ،رئيس هيئة الشارقة للكتاب ومدير معرض الكتاب ،أن األدب يجب أن يستخدم كسالح للتقدم. في كل عام يطلق الشيخ الدكتور سلطان أحدث مؤلفاته في معرض الشارقة الدولي للكتاب ،والتي تصدر عن منشورات القاسمي في الشارقة .وشهد معرض الشارقة الدولي للكتاب 2015إطالق إصدارات اللغة اإلنجليزية لكتابي الشيخ الدكتور سلطان :حديث الذاكرة-الجزء الثالث من مذكراته بعنوان الثقافة والتعليم والتغيير ( )2004-1987وكتاب تحت راية االحتالل. ويأخذ الكتاب الجديد لسموه أحاديث مختارة، صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي

7حقائــق لم تعرفها عن i البحرين اللؤلؤ البحريني هو األثمن في العالم .منذ منتصف القرن التاسع عشر وحتى ثالثينيات القرن العشرين كانت الآللىء البحرينية تعتبر أعلى قيمةً من أحجار الماس .ولكن تجارة اللؤلؤ تغيرت بشكل جذري عندما طورت اليابان اللؤلؤ المستزرع .وتعتبر تجارة ٍ اللؤلؤ المستزرع غير قانونية في الجزيرة. كان لون العلم البحريني هو األحمر فقط حتى عام 1820عندما وقعت البحرين معاهد ًة مع المملكة المتحدة .تمت إضافة اللون األبيض رمزًا للهدنة والسالم .وتمثل المثلثات الخمس عدد أركان اإلسالم. الدينار البحريني هو ثاني أقوى عملة في العالم (بعد الدينار الكويتي) .يعادل الدينار البحريني الواحد حوالي 2.65دوالر أمريكي. أطلق على البحرين اسم البحرين (صيغة المثنى لكلمة بحر) بسبب وجود بعض األماكن في الجزيرة حيث يختلط الماء العذب بمياه البحر المالحة ،كما يوجد في البحر شمال البحرين بعض البقع التي تظهر فيها فقاعات ماء عذب في وسط ماء البحر المالح. مملكة البحرين ليست جزيرة واحدة ،بل أرخبيل مؤلف من ثالث وثالثين جزيرة .ترتبط كل واحدة من هذه الجزر بالجسور. إلى جانب تصميمها المعماري الفريد ،يعد بناء مركز البحرين التجاري العالمي أول ناطحات السحاب التي تستعمل توربينات كبيرة للرياح لتوليد الطاقة النظيفة .يبلغ قطر كل توربين 29 مترًا وتبلغ استطاعة إنتاج الطاقة 675كيلوواط .وحصل البرج الذي يبلغ ارتفاعه 240مترًا على عدد من الجوائز العالمية نظرًا لهندسته المستدامة. في عام 1932كانت البحرين أول موقع يتم اكتشاف النفط بشكل ملحوظ في فيه في الخليج العربي .ارتفع إنتاج النفط ٍ السنوات األخيرة ليصل إلى معدل 40٫000برميل يوميًا خالل العام الماضي.

مختلــف تمامــً .فمــع المواكــب التــي تقــام علــى
ميــدان ســان ماركــو الشــهير .وعلــى الرغــم
القنــوات المائيــة وعــروض فنانــي االســتعراض
مــن الخــاف حــول لمــاذا بــدأ أهــل البندقيــة فــي
بالشــوارع والموســيقى الحيــة وحتــى وســائل
األصــل فــي ارتــداء األقنعــة ،إال أن أحــد النظريــات
الترفيــه المخصصــة لألطفــال فــي المياديــن

31يناير إذا حالفك الحظ وكنت في المدينة في هذا اليوم ،ستتمكن من مشاهدة أحد الجوانب الغريبة لما يعد حدثًا غريبًا إلى حد كبير ،وهو فولو ديل أنجيلو (تحليق المالك) حيث تتمكن الفائزة في إحدى مسابقات الجمال من الهبوط من برج األجراس في ميدان سان ماركو على حبل التزلج. 9فبراير تعد جائزة أفضل زي تنكري ،والتي يتولى لجنة تحكيمها نخبةُ من أعالم عالم الموضة ،عم ً ال جديًا خالل فترة المهرجان .وبجوالت السباق المتعددة التي تحدث على مدار االحتفاالت ،فإن 9 فبراير هو اليوم الذي يكافئ به الفائز النهائي بالجائزة المرموقة.

الثانــي مــن أكويليــا .فبعــد أســر أولريــك،

الطيار كنت أشعر أن مكاني فيها .وهكذا قررت االنتساب إلى برنامج تدريب الطيارين.
أعمل حاليًا كمساعد طيار تحت التدريب وذلك

ضمن برنامج تدريب طاقم القيادة الذي أنجزته
استغرق البرنامج حوالي ثمانية عشر شهرًا
في أكاديمية ألفا للطيران .وقريبًا سأتخرج
شملت فترة المدرسة األرضية والتدريب العملي.
