Navy League National Convention 2018

Dear Fellow Navy League Members, Welcome to our 2018 Navy League National Convention and the beautiful city of Portland. Over the next few days, we all have an array of special opportunities to learn and grow together as a team — both through our many enriching education sessions and through the exceptional social events brought to you this year by our national headquarters staff and Portland Council. This convention is rich with content that will enable all of us to serve the Navy League even better than we have before. From our council president track to our Thursday night fireside chat — where you may ask us any questions you may have — we have designed this year’s events with you in mind. Over the last year, we have witnessed the unshakable passion that each of you holds for our organization. Together, we have worked to make this year one of our best on record. Sea-Air-Space was the biggest exposition we have ever held. It was attended by more than 15,000 attendees from around the world, including 39 foreign delegations. Our inaugural Maritime Gala was attended by each head of our sea services. Our education and advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill, including our highly successful Fly In, supported the funding of our sea services at their highest levels in years. Our headquarters staff and national directors have been working tirelessly together as a team with the goal of creating a solid infrastructure so our organization will be successful for decades to come. All our wins are possible because of your hard work, determination and dedication on the local, area and regional levels. Please join us at the many special events being held this week, including our Welcome Aboard Reception Wednesday night, our Willamette River cruise by Fleet Week vessels Friday night, at the Rose Festival Parade on Saturday morning and at our closing cocktail reception on Saturday night. These events are all opportunities for our Navy League family to grow even closer as we work together for the betterment of our mission. A special thanks to our Portland Council, Portland Council President Ken Bray and Convention Committee Chair Dave Todd for the many hours of preparation to host this phenomenal convention. We are grateful for your hospitality. Most importantly, thank you to all of you for joining us and for all you do in support of our mission. Together as a team, we can accomplish anything. One Team — Mission Focused

Navy League National Convention 2018

May 14, 2018 Greetings, On behalf of the city of Portland, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all attendees of the Navy League of the United States’ Annual National Convention, held June 6-10, 2018. I commend the Navy League for its commitment to advocating for and enhancing the morale of the men and women who serve in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S.-flag Merchant Marine and their families. As you will learn Portland has several exciting attractions to offer. Our city was founded on and is still largely based around our river. Portland was founded as a river port connected to the sea more than 150 years ago, and still serves as a major maritime port. During your visit, I hope that you will take the time to cross our bridges, experience our beautiful Willamette River and spend some time biking or walking along the waterfront. And, of course, there’s always great doughnuts and breweries to try. I hope you get a chance to explore Portland and all our city has to offer. Best wishes on a successful convention. Sincerely,

Mayor Ted Wheeler City of Portland, Oregon

Navy League National Convention 2018

Welcome to Oregon! On behalf of the entire Portland Rose Festival Foundation, we would like to welcome all the attendees of the 2018 Navy League of the United States’ Annual National Convention to the Rose City. The Navy League of the United States is commendable in its commitment to supporting and enhancing the morale of the women and men who serve in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S.-flag Merchant Marine and their families. The Portland Rose Festival makes Portland, Oregon, a better place to live and visit. Started in 1907, the Rose Festival highlighted by three major parades and a waterfront entertainment center — CityFair — extends over three weeks from Memorial Day weekend, Friday May 25 through Sunday June 10, 2018. The Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade (Saturday, June 2) continues a longtime festival tradition from the early 1900s, when illuminated floats built on electric trolley cars made their way through the city on trolley tracks. The Fred Meyer Junior Parade (Wednesday, June 6) is the nation’s oldest and largest allchildren’s parade featuring nearly 30 middle school bands. The festival celebrates its final week with Fleet Week and America’s second largest all-floral parade, the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade on Saturday, June 9, the only major parade in the country to start indoors at a sports arena. Portland is known for its 11 iconic bridges that straddle the Willamette River connecting the city’s east and west sides, and for more than 100 years, the river has hosted Rose Festival Fleet Week visits along the “Sea Wall” at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Downtown Portland. 2018 Fleet Week will feature three U.S. Navy ships, three Royal Canadian Navy ships and four U.S. Coast Guard vessels. We hope you have the opportunity to explore not only Rose Festival events but many of Portland’s attractions and fine establishments. Best wishes for a fun and successful convention.
