EDITOR’S letter

The GMO tipping point? Food manufacturers and retailers: It’s time to begin the process of ditching GMOs! I am incredibly encouraged by the global rise against GMOs and Monsanto (OK, I’m actually ecstatic about it!). So many people all around the world marched in the streets to protest global food injustice, even though the wholly discredited mainstream media sat back and pretended the march never even took place! Large numbers of courageous individuals are waking up and marching, posting videos online, boycotting food brands that use GMOs, or holding home viewing parties of DVDs that educate people on the truth about GMOs. What I love is that there is no leader or one body that can be intimidated, sued or shut down by Monsanto. Behind every activist there are a thousand more carrying the torch for food justice. The unstoppable grassroots energy behind the anti-GMO movement will continue until GMOs are banned from the global food supply. If you are part of the effort to stop Monsanto and outlaw GMOs, you are winning. You are making a measurable, effective difference in the world, and the positive shockwaves of your efforts will be felt for generations to come.

NEW CONTRIBUTORS We welcome to our panel of experts Dr Michael Tierra from California, a pioneer in the study of traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine in the West and recognised internationally as an authority on the 4 | www.naturalmedicine.co.za I S S U E

world’s herbal traditions. His expertise comes from over 30 years of practice and study in North America, China and India. Read his valuable contribution on the liver on page 32. I would also like to thank Dr Martin Grimbly for sharing with us his work experience using Colorimetry in his Cape Town practice. This relatively new modality helps to restore joy and self-confidence in those who have struggled with reading disabilities and the subsequent lack of absorption and ordering of information (see page 104). Research published by the Mayo Clinic confirms that enzyme production decreases with age. No wonder your digestion keeps getting worse as you get older, and health problems increase! See the article ‘Examining Enzymes’ on page 88, and find out why supplementing is a must. Should you supplement with rhodiola? See page 97. Learn how to look after your bones properly (page 64), and your heart (page 56).

MYTHS DEBUNKED In September last year I attended a scientific symposium at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, where experts in the field of respiratory infections, immunology and virology reported on their experience with echinacea in the context of colds and flu. I share with you the fascinating findings and the many myths debunked in a detailed report on page 92. Talking about myths debunked …. In 2006, Greenpeace, local farmers and church groups in the Philippines were part of a man-made crop circle design featuring a gigantic letter ‘M’ crossed out by a slash, in protest against Monsanto’s and other seed com-

panies’ aggressive peddling of GMO crops which undermined sustainable farming practices in the country. Well, for the curious at heart (like myself) I couldn’t resist roping in one of our all-time favourite authors, Shayne Niehaus, to write an article on crop circles. They have always intrigued me, and I love learning more about them and all the possible explanations for their existence. I wonder if there are authentic crop circles in GMO cornfields?

It is enriched with chamomile and calendula extracts and locks in moisture for a radiant, natural glow. Harmless House has selected their brands because they are harmless to the earth (biodegradable and green); harmless to animals (cruelty free certified and vegan); and harmless to people (natural and organic), while still being of the highest quality.

letters@naturalmedicine.co.za THE EDITOR REPLIES: When the kidney is injured, it cannot get rid of wastes and extra fluid in the body, and if the illness continues, the kidneys may stop working completely, resulting in kidney failure. I am sure you will have been given excellent advice on treating your GN, so I’ll just say a little more about the kidneys and how they relate to another crucially important organ, the liver, and suggest tonics to support both. Most of the regulating of toxins and acid in the body is done by the liver and the kidneys, which support each other in the task. Remember that excessive strain on one puts strain on the other – for example, it is not uncommon to find that someone suffering from a kidney disorder also develops high cholesterol.

KIDNEY AND LIVER SUPPORT I was diagnosed with a kidney problem called glomerular nephritis (GN) about 5 weeks ago. My kidney specialist has explained the problem and what may have caused it – apparently it takes 3 - 4 months to get better. GN causes swollen feet and ankles and a puffy face, so I can’t wear shoes to work (I wear slip-slops, which makes me very self-conscious in a corporate office with a strict dress code), and colleagues ask what is wrong when they notice the puffiness in my face. There are days when I feel OK, and others when I feel awful. I would appreciate some info on GN and what to expect in the future. Does one need to adapt one’s lifestyle, and is there a way to look after the kidneys and possibly prevent problems reoccurring? Colleen

The kidneys have a language of their own and are often neglected. Headaches on top of the head and extending down the back of the neck; water retention in the ankles, hands and around the eyes; high blood pressure; gout; smelly, aching feet; painful heels on rising; smelly urine; kidney stones; a frequent urge to urinate; and wet skin conditions all suggest that the kidneys need some care. Swiss naturopath Alfred Vogel recommended that anyone suffering from a viral or bacterial infection should pay extra attention to their kidneys. He would prescribe a nice hot bath, warm socks, a blanket around the midriff, and parsley tea. If we neglect ourselves during an infection, the virus or bacterium can attack our organs and leave them damaged. Excessive use of painkillers, salt, and an unusually high intake of concentrated protein, can also lead to kidney damage.

Naturopathic kidney and liver tonics To support the kidneys, Vogel made an organic fresh plant tonic called Nephrosolid. The >>

BULLIES AND VICTIMS SUFFER LONG-TERM HARM THE WILDERNESS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL TRUST The Wilderness Leadership School Trust is based in Natal and is dedicated to educating people from all economic levels of the community about critical environmental and wilderness issues facing humanity and the planet. The school offers trails within three wilderness areas including the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park; Greater Saint Lucia Wetland Park; and the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. Each trail is a spiritual, mental and physical adventure, giving every trailist the opportunity to re-examine their priorities. The school does not receive government funding and relies heavily on private and corporate donations to provide life-changing experiences to young leaders from disadvantaged communities.

If you think bullying is a fairly normal and an insignificant part of childhood, think again. According to 20 years of research, recently published in JAMA Psychiatry, children who are bullied, or who bully, run a higher risk of developing psychiatric disorders as adults, compared with those with no history of being bullied. More than 1 270 of the original 1 420 children who participated in the study were questioned as adults on their psychological health. Victims of bullying had higher levels of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder and agoraphobia. Those who were both aggressors and victims showed higher levels of all anxiety and depressive disorders as well as the highest levels of suicidal thoughts. Cold Sores? Fever Blisters? Sun Blisters?

CONGRATULATIONS! 10 lucky subscribers have won a TheraVine™ body care hamper to the value of R2 240 each! All they needed to do was subscribe, renew or take out a gift subscription to Natural Medicine Magazine during April. One couple stands a chance to win a pampering wellness break for two nights at the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa. See page 70 for details.

Fithealth L-Lysine assists in the treatment of cold sores/fever blisters and sun blisters. A cold sore is a small, painful fluid-filled blister which can appear on the lips, mouth or nose. Fatigue, stress, a compromised immune system, sun exposure, chapped skin & fever can activate the cold sore virus (herpes simplex).

THE BENEFITS OF BROMELAIN Bromelain is a mixture of protein-digesting enzymes derived from the stem and juice of pineapples. Pineapples have been used for hundreds of years in Central and South America in the treatment of indigestion and inflammation. Bromelain can be used to treat several conditions including swelling, bruising, reducing both recovery time, and pain after surgery and physical injuries. It reduces inflammation from tendonitis, sprains and strains, and other minor muscle injuries. In Europe, bromelain is used to treat sinus and nasal swelling after ear, nose, and throat surgery or trauma. Bromelain may also reduce sinus-related cough and nasal mucus and relieve the swelling and inflammation caused by hay fever.

Fithealth L-Lysine Tablets Taking Fithealth L-Lysine (an essential amino acid that cannot be manufactured by the body) tablets will assist in alleviating/ reducing the duration and severity of cold sores.

Fithealth Lysine Lip Cream Fithealth Lysine Lip Cream contains a combination of active ingredients including Lysine, Tea Tree Oil and Zinc Oxide to assist in alleviating cold sores/fever blisters and sun blisters. Administered to the lips, Lysine Lip Cream assists in healing and soothing the affected area/s. For best results use Fithealth L-Lysine Tablets and Fithealth Lysine Lip Cream in conjunction with each other.

Before using bromelain consult a qualified health care provider regarding dosage, period of use and possible drug interactions. Source http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/bromelain-000289. htm#ixzz2Rlg7oWpH

ASK our experts CURBING CANDIDA ASK YOUR INTEGRATIVE DOCTOR DR ARIEN VAN DER MERWE Twitter @DrArien www.healthstresswellness.com www.weightcontrolclinic.co.za She is a medical doctor and specialist health and wellbeing consultant. Author of numerous books and training manuals on health and wellness, she also writes for and consults for many magazines and newspapers. She was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health in the UK for her work promoting public health and wellness in South Africa through education, training and communication, and is a member of the International Stress Management Association. Arien has been on a lifelong journey to address her own health challenges from the inside out, and believes in a holistic, integrative approach to optimise health and well-being.

Q

It seems that the only so-called remedies available for candida are probiotics which can be hideously expensive, and various useless ointments. These things just do not work. Is there no effective herbal remedy one can swallow to rid the system of the excessive microbes? With thanks. C. W.

A

DR ARIEN VAN DER MERWE REPLIES: Candida albicans (white) is a fungus or yeast that is always present in the body. The growth of candida is controlled by the beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract and in the female urogenital system. The excessive use or abuse of antibiotics kills the good, harmless, beneficial bacteria along with the bad. Candida then proliferates, causing thrush in babies and young children and candidiasis in adult women. Babies get thrush if their bottles are oversterilised, which then destroys the good bacteria. Rinse dummies and bottles in water after removing them from the sterilising solution. Men can also

26 | www.naturalmedicine.co.za I S S U E

i97_ASK THE EXPERTSv2.indd 26

contract candida infections: partners should both be treated even if only the one has the infection - otherwise cross-infection takes place. The contraceptive pill disturbs the normal hormone balance in the female urogenital system and can result in excessive growth of candida. Diabetics are also prone to candida infections (candida organisms like sugar). If you often have problems with candida, you should have a glucose tolerance test.

Symptoms Candida manifests in: ■ Chronic vaginal infections characterised by a thick white, flaky, itchy discharge. ■ Infections in the mouth and the rest of the digestive tract with a white layer on the tongue, sore throat, painful and red mucosa in the mouth, anus, penis, skin, fingernails and toenails. ■ Systemic infection on account of increased intestinal permeability that allows candida fungi to enter the bloodstream ('leaky gut' syndrome), causing diarrhoea, general fatigue, low libido, menstrual disorders, muscular pain, painful joints, headache, bloating, allergies, reduced immune function in chronic respiratory infections, depression and poor concentration. Diagnosis can only be made by undergoing specific tests (e.g. a test for candida antibodies with IgG, IgM, IgA, as well as food tolerance tests, white blood cell count, and a glucose tolerance test).

Treatment Ensure that you do have a candida infection by going for a routine check-up and a vaginal smear. The natural remedies and recommendations below are aimed at the improvement of general health and well-being: ■ Avoid antibiotics whenever possible - take them only if it's really necessary. If all contraceptive medications cause candidiasis, find another method of contraception. Corticosteroids and the medicines used to treat ulcers can also cause candida. Try other complementary options under your doctor's supervision. ■ Support the immune system with herbs such as echinacea, goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis),

calendula and garlic to keep the fungal growth in check. Apply them to the affected area and take them orally. For relief and healing, diluted tea tree oil and spike lavender oil (Lavendula spica) are gentle enough to use on infected skin and the mucosa. Mix 2-3 drops of each on a vaginal tampon or sanitary towel. All essential oils used neat must, however, be administered with knowledge and caution. You can also add these oils to your bathwater (10 drops of each). Regular use should soon clear the problem. Capsules of Lactobacillus acidophilus or Bifidobacterium bifidum will also contribute to the regrowth of a normal bacterial population in the body, thereby balancing the excessive growth of candida. Probiotics are easily taken and any pharmacist can be asked for dosage guidance – there are many brands and forms, such as oil sprays, powders, capsules and chewables, to suit each individual. Capsules can either be taken orally or opened up and made into a paste (or alternatively use the powder form) to apply directly into the vagina. Natural yoghurt can also be used as a douche. Mix natural yoghurt with 10 ml of apple vinegar, 10 drops of tea tree oil and 10 ml of goldenseal root extract; add the mixture to a hot bath and have a long soak. Editor's note: One of the most potent anti-candida natural substances is oregano essential oil capsules (oleocaps). ■ Avoid refined sugar, white flour, white rice, canned or processed foods, alcohol, fizzy drinks, coffee, fruit juices, bananas, grapes, fermented foods such as cheese, smoked fish, dairy products, honey and mushrooms for 30 days. If your symptoms improve, you will know that the problem is candida. In any event, you will feel much healthier, more energetic and lose a few kilograms as well. ■ Don’t wear tight-fitting underwear or clothing – avoid vaginal deodorants, soap, powder and perfume. Avoid underwear made from synthetic fabrics such as nylon. Wear cotton panties. ■ Eat plenty of fresh fruit (except for those mentioned) and vegetables, natural unflavoured yoghurt, fibrerich foods, brown rice, fresh fish, chicken, olive oil, oatmeal porridge and drink plenty of water.

■ Take vitamin and mineral supplements and include them in your diet to support the immune system and the urogenital system: • Vitamin A (10 000 IU a day during infection, then reduced to 5 000 IU a day). • Vitamin C (2 000 mg a day in divided doses during infection and then reduced to 1 000 mg a day). • Vitamin E (400 IU or 300 mg a day) with 100 IU of selenium a day. • Mixed carotenes, magnesium, calcium, Bcomplex vitamins, coenzyme Q10, molybdenum, chromium and essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) will all contribute to curing and preventing candida infection. • Bioflavonoids (Supplements: echinacea, garlic, quercetin, peppermint, camomile and rose hip; food sources: pawpaw, green pepper, tomatoes and broccoli are all rich in bioflavonoids). • Zinc (15 mg a day).

LOOKING AT THE LIVER THROUGH THE EYES OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE – SOME FASCINATING FACTS DR MICHAEL TIERRA O.M.D. Twitter @East_West_Herbs www.facebook.com/EastWestHerbSchool www.planetherbs.com He is a pioneer in the study of traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine in the West and is recognised internationally as an authority on the world's herbal traditions. His expertise comes from over 30 years of practice and study in North America, China and India. He is the founder of the American Herbalists Guild and the East-West School of Herbology, one of the most highly regarded residency and distant-learning herbal programmes in the United States. He practices at the East West clinic in Santa Cruz in Central California.

Perhaps in no other organ system is the difference – and the similarity – between Western and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) more evident than in their descriptions of the liver. The liver’s physiological functions as Western medicine sees them are so complex that it is helpful for us to visualise the bridge between body and mind that is at the heart of TCM theory.

THE WOOD ELEMENT It is no accident that the ancient Chinese assigned the liver and gallbladder to the wood element. Probably no other organ system is as keyed to respond to botanical medicine as is the liver. People around the world recognise the importance of vegetables to a healthy liver as part of their folk heritage, and furthermore it is the bitter flavour of certain herbs that specifically triggers the secretion of bile that aids digestion as well as liver metabolism.

i97_WORLD EXPERTSv2.indd 32

The first TCM description of the liver can almost summarise all the organ’s other functions. While the heart is the king or supreme commander over all body-mind functions, the Chinese describe the liver as the general or long-range planner. How does this relate to Western physiology?

THE LIVER AS THE GENERAL, GOVERNING THE BODY-MIND First, just as a good general helps defend against external invasions and attacks, the liver has an important role in the immune system. It is primarily responsible for detoxification and elimination of various metabolic poisons, and after the external immune system has overcome pathological bacteria and viruses, the liver removes the debris in the form of vanquished and exhausted blood cells and other metabolic wastes from the blood. The liver serves as as long-range planner by refining, filtering, using and storing important nutrients such as proteins, glycogen, vitamins and

ADDICTION IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS UNDERSTANDING

Addictive behaviour has become one of the most critical sociocultural problems of our time affecting children as much as adults. Never before has a civilisation been affected by addictive tendencies as is happening today, and never has addiction affected children as much as it is doing so today. It is a pandemic alongside cancer and HIV/AIDS, but when we look at human nature, we understand that addictive behaviour is in fact endemic to the human condition. Needs and their gratification, both physical and psychological, are a normal part of human development. Just as we must drink when we are thirsty, so must we receive acknowledgement, approval, safety and security when required. A child will go to any extreme to achieve emotional gratification: she may avoid confrontation to feel secure and gain her father’s approval, or constantly draw attention to herself to feel acknowledged. Some children are terrified of a parent’s temper and may become shy and anxious in their avoidance of confrontation. Through an inherent genius that instinctively knows how to survive, the child’s

physical and emotional discomfort will then determine a behaviour pattern that is set in motion at the earliest age when he or she learns what works to relieve internal distress. A subconsciously or consciously chosen behaviour pattern that brings gratification will invariably be repeated whenever the discomfort or anxiety appears because of the learned comfort value, and after many such actions it will become habitual, compulsive and reflexive. This pattern fulfills all the criteria that define addiction to substances or agencies (an agency is a substance or activity which feeds an addiction and may therefore be regarded as belonging to the same psychological dependency dynamic as any other addiction.)

GLUTEN-FREE DIETS CAN CAUSE

NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES A gluten-free diet may sound healthy and hip but such diets can lead to a deficiency in a variety of nutrients. Dr Arien van der Merwe tells you what supplements you need if you have to, or have chosen to, eat gluten-free foods. Some people, through disease affliction, are forced to follow a gluten-free diet. Others choose to follow this eating plan because they see it as either a useful way to lose weight or simply because they believe it to be a healthy lifestyle option. Whatever the reason, it is important to be aware of the nutrient deficiency risks associated with a glutenfree diet.

niacin, folate, riboflavin, carotenoids and zinc– nutrients found in the breads, pastas and many other foods containing wheat, barley and rye that have no place in a gluten-free diet. This risk of nutrient depletion should be seriously considered by non-coeliac patients who are on, or are planning to embark on, a diet free of gluten simply because they believe it is a healthy lifestyle option.

COELIAC DISEASE If you have coeliac disease your body’s immune system will overreact to gluten (the protein found in most breads, cereals, and grains) creating damage to the delicate, hair-like villi that line the small intestine and which are responsible for the effective absorption of nutrients. There is no cure for coeliac disease, but it can be managed well, if you avoid gluten.

I strongly recommend that anybody who follows a gluten-free diet should supplement with foods and / or supplements to make up for the loss in micronutrients and proteins. For many on a gluten-free diet, rice is the preferred starch by as much as 44% of the time. This can result in a lack of protein, iron, calcium and fibre.3

NUTRIENT THIEF Recent studies1,2, however, reveal the downside: a gluten-free diet can lead to inadequacies in protein, iron, calcium, fibre, thiamine,

NUTRIENT-RICH FOOD SOURCES Let’s now look at some healthy food sources that can compensate for nutrient deficiencies.

The hype about

Hypertension! Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is also known as the ‘silent killer’ because many people don’t even know they have it before it is too late. It’s time to wise up on some facts so you know just what to look for and how best to manage this condition. Today, hypertension, which basically means ‘too much tension’, is considered a common modern-day disease affecting more men than women. Hypertension is not a ‘stand-alone’ condition in that it is the single greatest risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease and a possible cause of strokes. In addition to this people with essential hypertension have tested positive for either insulin resistance or heavy metal toxicity, or both, and most of them have had less than ‘tropical’ blood levels of vitamin D. It is therefore important to keep a regular track of your blood pressure in order to safeguard your general health.

THE SYMPTOM MYTH The misconception that people with raised blood pressure experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, nose bleeds, anxiety, and severe headaches, needs to be seriously addressed. Hypertension is, broadly speaking, a symptomless condition. Do not wait for the above symptoms to alert you as they are actually indicative of a state of hypertensive crisis which means that your blood pressure may have already soared to levels where your life is in danger and you need immediate medical attention. The message here is clear:

have your blood pressure checked annually, or more frequently if you are over 40 or you fall into a high risk category.

WHAT IS HYPERTENSION? Hypertension basically means that the blood is flowing through your arteries with too much force. This in turn causes abrasions along the artery walls which, during the healing process, creates scar tissue. The once smooth artery walls now have bumps that trap fatty materials and blood cells. As time passes more material is deposited, creating a vicious cycle as the blood flows along increasingly narrowed blood vessels. This can lead to blockages which may result in a heart attack or a stroke as well as a compromised circulatory system, meaning that oxygen is not delivered efficiently to your whole body.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS But how do you know whether or not you have squeaky clean arteries? The answer lies in those numbers that show up on the computer screen when the nurse places the blood pressure cuff around your arm. A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers: the upper (or first) reading measures

MAN-MADE, MYSTERY OR MESSAGE?

A crop circle is a sizeable pattern created by the flattening of a crop such as wheat, barley, rye or maize. Scientific consensus is that crop circles are mainly man-made with a few exceptions which may be due to natural phenomena. But these fascinating formations actually deserve a closer look.

SHAYNE NIEHAUS

Ever since pensioners Doug and Dave claimed in 1991 that they were the perpetrators of a 13-year-old crop circle hoax, any serious, large-scale scientific study or discussion of crop circles and their formation has been regarded with derision and ridicule. Every crop circle formation since then has also been labled ‘hoax’, attributed to persons unknown who have nothing better to do than flatten a field of wheat or barley for fun … Except that the intricacies of the more advanced crop circle formation phenomena now go way beyond that which any intelligent person can do in a few hours with bits of string and a plank of wood. It also didn’t seem to matter that in 1990, so many crop circles had appeared during that year, that dear old Doug and Dave could not possibly have made them all. Nevertheless, the media latched onto their story and unfortunately, it has stuck ever since.

82 | www.naturalmedicine.co.za I S S U E

i97_crop circlesv3.indd 82

THE HISTORY The facts are that reports about massive, strange markings in grain fields date back to ancient Sanskrit texts. Crop circles are nothing new under the sun. In 1633, it is recorded that a Mr Hart of Wiltshire (England) came upon strange ‘green circles’ in a local field. A little later during 1678 in Hartfordshire, England, a ‘Mowing Devil’ was blamed for creating peculiar crop circles in the area. We can go further back to AD 815 when the Bishop of Lyon warns his new curate by letter about strange illustrations in the local crops and described them as ‘works of the Devil’. In more recent times, over 10 000 of these formations have been recorded worldwide in the last decade alone. To the ignorant, a crop circle is a ‘geometric … circular pattern of flattened stalks in a field of grain now usually attributed to natural phenomena OR to the work of hoaxers trying to create

9 7 J U LY 2 0 1 3

the impression of a visit by extraterrestrial beings’ (Webster). Therein lies the problem. Most people remember the Doug and Dave story and don’t give crop circles a second look. Probably the most prolific place for crop-circle formations is England, where they have been recurring regularly since the 1970s, although formations are found worldwide including India, Canada, the United States and Australia. Crop circles seem to congregate close to holy sites like Avebury and Stonehenge in the UK and near ley lines (archaic tracks). When the formations started, they were just simple circles (hence the term ‘crop circles’), but

from the late 1980s onwards, very complicated patterns within the laying of the grain itself and amazing pictograms have kept the crop circle researchers both enthralled and mystified. It’s as though the mysterious language of the designs has grown and developed alongside our growing interest in them. Certainly something odd is going on.

PHYSICAL CHANGES Clear, biophysical changes in plants and soils have been well documented. In 1995, the Wiltshire Crop Circle Study Group was founded with the prime objective being to study ‘the phenomenon of crop circles and inform the public about what is happening in the fields of Wiltshire’.

Enzymes xamining

E

A balanced healthy diet should consist of at least 50% raw food. Raw ‘live’ foods supply the body with the necessary nutrients and enzymes for optimum health and vitality. Enzymes are one of the ‘missing links’ in our over-processed Western diet. WHY ENZYMES? We are not only what we eat. We are what we can digest and absorb. The food we eat cannot nourish us unless it is prepared for absorption by enzymes that digest it and break large food particles down into smaller units ready for absorption. Protein is broken down into amino acids, complex carbohydrate into simple sugars, and fat into fatty acids and glycerol by

88 | www.naturalmedicine.co.za I S S U E

i97_ENZYMES_v2.indd 88

specific enzymes. For the body to support these enzymes, it needs nutrients. Vitamins and minerals are called co-enzymes, since they are the co-factors needed to sustain enzymes. If a person becomes nutrient-deficient, enzyme deficiency will soon follow. For example, zinc is needed to make both stomach acid and protein-splitting enzymes called proteases.

9 7 J U LY 2 0 1 3

2013/06/05 10:44 PM

ENZYMES

WHAT ARE ENZYMES? Enzymes are one of many specific protein catalysts that initiate or speed chemical reactions in the body without being consumed. They are part of all living cells, including the cells of plant and animal foods. Enzymes are the foundation of energy and the life force in all living things. Without enzymes, seeds would not sprout, fruit would not ripen, and leaves would not change colour and could not exist. Enzymes are responsible for building, detoxifying and healing your body. They are the force that allows your body to digest and absorb food. Enzymes also regulate tens of thousands of other biochemical functions that take place in your body every day. These functions include breathing, growing, smelling, tasting, stimulating nerves, defending your body against disease, regulating hormones, and building organs, glands and tissues. Even your thinking involves enzymes. One of the primary keys to weight loss may simply be the action of enzymes.

ENZYMES AND YOUR HEALTH Your immunity, vitality and longevity depend on keeping your body’s enzymes at optimum levels. We are born with a limited bodily (metabolic) enzyme energy potential, similar to a bank account that has to last a lifetime.

The faster we use up this enzyme potential, the shorter our lives. In order for us to enjoy a long and healthy life, we must avoid enzyme depletion by making regular deposits into our enzyme ‘bank accounts’. We can accomplish this by consuming ‘live’ enzymerich foods. These food enzymes from raw food are not denatured by stomach acid, as some researchers have suggested, but rather remain active throughout the digestive tract. The human body has a way of protecting the enzymes that pass through the gut so that more than half reach the colon intact. There they bring about an alteration in the intestinal flora by binding free oxygen, reducing the potential for fermentation and putrefaction in the intestines, a factor linked to cancer in the colon. In so doing, they also help to create conditions in which lactic acid-forming beneficial bacteria can grow. Most people are enzyme-deficient and are facing nutritional ‘bankruptcy’. Because of chemical poisoning, pollution and soil exhaustion, our earth can no longer provide us with clean air to breathe, pure water to drink or nutrient-rich foods to eat. Worldwide, demineralisation of the soil in which our food is grown has escalated to such a degree that it may affect our ability to survive as

Colorimetry – seeing through colour ‘To learn to see – to accustom the eye to calmness, to patience, and to allow things to come up to it…. This is the first preparatory schooling of intellectuality’ (Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols).

Colorimetry is a relatively new concept for most people, but one which is restoring joy and self-confidence in those who have always struggled with reading disabilities and the subsequent lack of absorption and ordering of information. Children are particularly vulnerable to the feelings of low self-esteem that accompany a reading disability when teachers, for example, resort to rote learning, parrot fashion, which is obviously impossible for someone who can’t read properly. A shocking number of pupils aren’t able to read properly, and often their poor performance is put down to disobedience or laziness with the real problem never being diagnosed. These children suffer terribly. Now, however, a child’s world can open up and become a brighter place with the exciting procedure of colorimetry.

WHAT IS COLORIMETRY? Colorimetry is a procedure which can identify whether an individual is going to benefit from the use of tinted lenses to aid them with

processing written information or formulating thoughts and recording them in an acceptable and structured fashion. For those who suffer from problems such as dyslexia or Mears Irlen Syndrome (a condition characterised by perceptual reading problems such as illusions of shape, colour or motion) this procedure may well be the answer.

WHAT IS DYSLEXIA? In order to fully appreciate how the tinted lenses will benefit the individual, let’s look more closely at a condition such as dyslexia, a reading difficulty which is not fully understood but which is becoming increasingly identified as a significant cause of learning challenges. Symptoms of dyslexia include: words moving in the text; distortions of patterns forming; or flashing or pulsing print. Those with the condition may find themselves reading the same line or paragraph over and over. When they get to an end of an article, it is often very hard to remember the details of what they have just read.

EXTREME SELF-CARE

‘Thomas Leonard’, founder of Coach University and the leading pioneer in the field of professional coaching, was the man’s name, and I’ll never forget what happened in our first session. During the intake process Thomas asked me to tell him a little about my life. As I listened to myself talk about my schedule, I have to admit that I felt pretty good. There was a certain level of satisfaction that came from being needed and in demand. When I finished, Thomas was quiet for a moment, and then, with a slight edge in his voice said, ‘Wow, you do a great job of taking care of a lot of people. You’re such a good person.’ I smiled to myself, thinking, Hmmm, he really gets me. But what he said next took me totally by surprise: ‘And the truth is, Cheryl, your “good girl” role is going to rob you of your life.’ I was a good girl. I was so used to playing the role of caretaker that it had become a normal way of life. It had also become my identity and how I defined my self-worth. When it came time to talk with Thomas about what wasn’t working in my life, my complaints revealed something quite different. I had to admit that I had no time for myself. I felt resentful about helping to make others successful yet never getting around to doing what I wanted to do. I also had to face the reality that too many of my relationships were one-way streets. Some of my friends were extremely

needy, yet I kept them in my life because they made me feel safe, in control, and significant. Yes, Thomas was right: I was a good girl, and it was sucking the life out of me. It was during our work together that Thomas introduced me to the concept of Extreme Self-Care. As I slowly began to incorporate Extreme Self-Care into my life, it was clear that internal changes were required in order to make these behaviours stick. For example, I needed to quit being a martyr and focus on getting my needs met. I had to stop expecting others to read my mind and start being direct about what I wanted. I was challenged to try asking for help long before I needed it. Rather than bitch and moan about how others had let me down, I was to see my frustration as an indication that something needed to change. I also had to begin asking people to share the load instead of being a hero by attempting to do it all myself. Finally, I had to stop being an automatic ‘yes’ machine when people asked for my help and instead learn to say ‘no’ with confidence and ease. The art of Extreme Self-Care takes patience, commitment, and practice. It initially requires
