Digital Detox Workshop Teaches The Power of Off
Awaken Wellness Fair Makes Trip 20 to Tarrytown
ancy Colier, author of The Power of Off: The Mindful Way to Stay Sane in a Virtual World, will hold a workshop on that theme November 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the New York Open Center, Nancy Colier 22 East 33rd Street. A psychotherapist in private practice, Colier is also an interfaith minister, a mindfulness teacher, a relationship coach and a blogger at Huffington Post and Psychology Today. Her workshop will focus on strategies for connecting with ourselves and disconnecting from 24/7 technology. “In the digital world, we have far more possibilities but find less meaning, take more selfies but feel less self-worth, communicate more but feel less connected,” she says. “We’re interested in mindfulness, but we use our devices to escape the present moment, and ourselves.” Being continually distracted and always on leaves us “twired”—simultaneously tired and wired, living in a perpetual state of anxiety, she says. Colier, who uses mindfulness techniques in her therapy practice, will explain how to become more mindful and present, with more control over time, attention and life—“and ultimately to find freedom in tech, not from it.” Admission is $125 for Open Center members and $145 for nonmembers. New York City Edition
he Awaken Wellness Fair, New York’s “body-mind-spiritgreen expo,” will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown, located at 455 South Broadway, on November 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “This is the fair’s 20th trip to Tarrytown, but it always brings something fresh and new,” says founder Paula Caracappa, CEO of PPC Group. “This autumn, for example, we’ve expanded to a third Paula Caracappa room of speakers. Yes, the Awaken Wellness Fair is always growing.” The mission of this holistically focused event is to expose people to a vast array of healthy services and products. Part of its continued success is its comfortable social environment, Caracappa says. “Visitors feel more like they are at a party than an expo. They frequently comment on how warm and inviting the energy is.” Many people are attracted to the Awaken Wellness Fairs because they’re curious about holistic practices, she says. “They find abundant information encompassing the world of ancient as well as new, cutting-edge healing/wellness methods. Expert speakers present free information all day long about how to awaken to your best self. Often guests come expecting to spend a couple of hours there and end up spending the entire day.” The fair features an assortment of vendors offering products and services to support a healthy lifestyle, such as essential oils, chiropractic care, nutritional supplements and organic cleaning products. Healing crystals and jewelry are especially popular, Caracappa says, and intuitive readers and holistic healers are always a big part of the event. Among their services (offered for entertainment purposes only) are tarot reading, mediumship, angel reading, numerology and pet readings. The fair also features energy healers, and as healing practices have grown more mainstream recently, many people “sample” one for the first time at the Awaken Fair, Caracappa says. Readers and healers will offer discount-rate appointments until November 18 at PPCGroup.FullSlate.com. For more info, including vendor details, visit AwakenFair.com.
No person, no place and no thing has any power over us, for ‘we’ are the only thinkers in our mind. When we create peace and harmony and balance in our minds, we will find it in our lives. ~Louise L. Hay
