any people hear fireworks on New Year’s Eve, but to us it sounds more like a starting pistol, as we begin preparing for the burst in health and fitness interest ignited by resolutions and vision boards. We recognize the moment as prime time to reach more readers by giving them the inspiration and tools to embrace their passion, live healthier, feel great and find their joy. As we put the finishing touches on our annual Natural Living Directory and prepare for our annual Holistic Health Expo, Scott and Daralyn we are constantly reminded of the many wonderful providChase ers and practitioners in our community who are dedicated to bringing us the most current knowledge, fine-tuned skills and advanced health care— because they care.

“Rising Above Adversity,” page 38, expounds on those who choose to thrive, not just survive. Like so many in our Natural Awakenings community, they purposely redirected their adversities to help others. Their ailments, challenges and struggles became ours to learn from and lean on so that we could heal within. In story after story, we’ve covered and revealed the most passionate “thrivers” in Northwest Florida, with solid intentions to connect and serve. Both our directory and the Holistic Health Expo give us all an opportunity to connect and resonate with each other, and with what is truly important in life. Our contributors raced to the finish line—in this case, our directory deadline—to share their stories, their personal challenges and their passion to provide the most advanced science and cutting-edge modalities in natural wellness and healing. Keep this directory (pages 20-37) at your fingertips all year—and remember to refer to our online directory, at NWFNaturally.com, for new listings, which become available every day. Turn to page 10 to learn what’s new with this year’s expo, which will be bigger than ever. We are beyond excited to showcase a fair trade fashion show, the “make-n-take” Emerald City of health and wellness, and a lineup of free expert panels and presentations. More than 100 of Northwest Florida’s finest will come together March 10 and 11 to bring Natural Awakenings alive. We look forward to seeing you there! Together we connect in strength and resilience,

'We’re excited to add a demonstration stage, which will feature a Fair-Trade Natural Fiber Fashion Show sponsored by BellaLine, an online conscious boutique based in Pensacola." ~ Daralyn Chase

EMERALD COAST

HOLISTIC HEALTH EXPO

BIGGER THAN EVER by Allison Gorman

L

ast year more than 3,000 people flocked to the Emerald Coast Holistic Health Expo to explore the wide world of natural health and green living. When the expo returns to the Emerald Coast Convention Center on March 10 and 11, it will be bigger and better than ever, says Daralyn Chase, publisher of the expo’s sponsor, Natural Awakenings magazine of Northwest Florida.

More Exhibits, More Space

As it was last year, the expo will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, showcasing the latest in fitness, yoga, meditation, nutrition, functional medicine, holistic healing and green living. But instead of last year’s 70 exhibitors, there will be more than 90 this time, with an additional ballroom to accommodate them. The Fair-Trade Farmers Market will be bigger this year too. “We’re excited to add a demonstration stage, which will feature a Fair-Trade 10

Natural Fiber Fashion Show sponsored by BellaLine, an online conscious boutique based in Pensacola,” Chase says. An open casting call for the fashion show will be held on February 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. Anyone age 18 or over who is interested in applying should visit ECHHExpo.com and fill out the sign-up form, which includes name, phone number, email, age and height. A current photo is also required; it doesn’t have to be professional, but no selfies, please. Those who qualify and are accepted will be notified via email. “If you love fashion and want to be a part of this exciting opportunity, this is your moment—own it!” Chase says.

Loads of Freebies

Again this year, visitors can register to win various door prizes, including gift certificates from local practitioners, natural product and essential oils gift baskets, and spa packages.

Natural Awakenings of Northwest Florida

www.NWFNaturally.com

All exhibits are free, and several sponsored presentations and panel discussions are scheduled. Presentations will include an introduction to the empowering practice known as ThetaHealing, with expo sponsor Felicia McQuaid and guest speaker Antti Heikkilä, an artist and ThetaHealing practitioner and teacher from Helsinki, Finland (read about him at HealerAnttiHeikkila.com); Aymen Kenawy, M.D., discussing Rheumatology and the Advancements in Treatment and Regenerative Medicine (stem cells); and the Tri-County Beekeepers Association on basic beekeeping. There will be two panel discussions with local experts: Marijuana, Endocannabinoids and You: The Dawning of a New Era, and Aging Holistically.

Paid Workshops

Visitors can buy tickets for all-day entry to the interactive workshop room, which will feature eight unique stations where they can discover, create and take away healthier, cleaner products for cooking, eating, cleansing and detoxing, green cleaning, body care, natural pet care, emotional balance and daily remedies. Tickets cost $25 in advance or $35 at the door. Several natural and spiritual healers will be on site throughout the event, offering private healing sessions at a reduced rate. “Many expo visitors take advantage of this special pricing to experience holistic health in ways that they’ve never tried before,” Chase says. “Because it’s a popular feature, we ask that people book their sessions in advance on our website.” For more information, visit ECCHExpo.com.

Research from the University of Texas at Arlington reported in The FASEB Journal, published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, has found that zinc supplements can inhibit or slow the growth of esophageal cancer cells. The research also found that zinc deficiency is common among throat cancer patients. Zinc-rich foods include spinach, flax seeds, beef, pumpkin seeds and seafood such as shrimp and oysters.

LOWER BODY MASS

A study of more than 50,000 people in the Czech Republic by the Seventh-Day Adventist Loma Linda University, in California, found that those that made breakfast their largest meal of the day had lower body mass index (BMI) levels. Lunch as the largest daily meal showed the next best results. The researchers concluded that timing and frequency of meals play a role in predicting weight loss or gain. The two factors associated with higher BMI were eating more than three meals a day (snacks were counted as extra meals) and making dinner the day’s largest meal.

Moderate Exercise Guards Against Depression In Exercise and the Prevention of Depression, a study of 33,908 adults in Norway by the University of New South Wales, researchers found that one hour of exercise a week reduced depression in 12 percent of the subjects. The purpose of the study was to address whether exercise protects against new-onset depression and anxiety and if so, the intensity and amount of exercise required. They concluded that regular leisure-time exercise of any intensity provides protection against future depression, but not anxiety. Thus, increasing the population of people exercising may provide public mental health benefits and prevent a substantial number of new cases of depression. 12

Chocolate and Olive Oil Help Heart Health Cardiologist Rossella Di Stefano, with the University of Pisa, in Italy, led a study of 26 people and determined that eating a combination of dark chocolate and olive oil improved cholesterol levels and blood pressure after 28 days. She says, “Fruits and vegetables exert their protective effects through plant polyphenols found in cocoa, olive oil and apples. We found that eating small, daily portions of dark chocolate with added natural polyphenols from extra-virgin olive oil was associated with an improved cardiovascular risk profile. Our study suggests that extra virgin olive oil might be a good food additive to help preserve our ‘repairing cells’.”

Antidepressants in Pregnancy Linked to Autism A study by the University of Bristol, England, of 254,610 young people from Stockholm showed that children born to mothers taking antidepressants during pregnancy had more than a 4 percent risk of autism, compared to less than a 3 percent risk in children born to mothers with psychiatric conditions not on antidepressants. Depression is common in women of childbearing age, with 3 to 8 percent of pregnant European women prescribed antidepressants. But with 95 percent of them bearing children without autism, the risks and benefits must be carefully weighed, say researchers.

Mindfulness Reduces Alcohol Cravings In a randomized, double-blind experiment published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, University College London researchers found that among 68 heavy drinkers, just 11 minutes of recorded mindfulness training reduced drinking. Subjects were closely matched with an active control group that was taught relaxation techniques. Seven days later, the mindfulness group on average drank 9.3 fewer units of alcohol, roughly equal to three pints of beer, while the relaxation group showed no drop in alcohol consumption.

THIRD-PERSON SELF-TALK AIDS IN EMOTIONAL CONTROL As reported in Scientific Reports, two studies of 37 and 52 people at Michigan State University have discovered that talking to ourselves in the third person using statements like, “Why is John upset?” instead of, “Why am I upset?” can help improve our ability to control our emotions. Everyone occasionally engages in internal monologue, an inner voice that guides our moment-to-moment reflections. Now, scientists believe that the language used in the process influences actions differently. The premise is that third-person selftalk leads us to think about ourselves similarly to how we think about others, which provides the psychological distance needed to facilitate self-control.

Renewable Payoff Germany Undergoes an Energy Renaissance

Last May, Germany’s renewable energy mix of solar, wind, hydropower and biomass generated so much power for a few hours that customers actually got paid for using electricity. The country’s renewable power sources generate 88 percent of total electricity demand, and growing wind power assets alone are expected to make the phenomenon a regular occurrence. When this happens, commercial producers either close power stations to reduce the electricity supply or pay consumers to take it off the grid.

As we went to press, the fate of 90,000 wild horses and burros depended on Congressional action, as the U.S. Senate and House were hammering out differences in the delayed 2018 spending bill. The Senate version vowed to fund “humane and viable options” to the animal euthanasia allowed in the House bill. Last October, the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board recommended that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) achieve its on-range population goal of 26,715 wild horses and burros while also phasing out the use of long-term holding facilities within three years. Killing tens of thousands of healthy animals would “be a betrayal of millions of taxpayers that want wild horses protected as intended in the 1971 Wild FreeRoaming Horses and Burros Act,” says Neda DeMayo, president of Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation. BLM has been tasked by Congress with the responsibility of protecting wild horses and other wildlife. The agency has balked at using affordable fertility control, despite ample evidence that it’s a more than 90 percent safe and effective means of population control, critics charge. Instead, it spends 65 percent of its annual budget in capturing, removing and warehousing animals.

Auto Revolution

China, the world’s largest car market, is planning to stop production and sales of traditional energy vehicles in favor of electric vehicles (EV), and the decision has sped up competitive development by U.S. automakers. General Motors is promising to launch at least 20 new electric vehicles in the next six years. “General Motors believes the future is all-electric,” says Mark Reuss, the company’s head of product development. The falling cost of lithium-ion batteries also brings a tipping point into view, observers say. By 2025 it’s possible that electric drivetrains will have no cost disadvantage compared with internal combustion engines. Technology is fast resetting the outlook for what cars can do, how consumers use them and how much an EV will cost. Tesla, Ford and Japanese and European companies are also responding to what’s being called both “the age of electricity”, and “the age of personalized transportation”. 14

Sealife Sanctuary Greenpeace Lobbies to Create Huge Antarctic Preserve

The South Pole is Earth’s last uninhabited outpost, and Greenpeace seeks to establish an Antarctic sanctuary of almost threequarters of a million square miles in the Weddell Sea adjacent to the vast continent that would protect whales, penguins and other wildlife. The nonprofit has called for governments to show greater vision and ambition. Frida Bengtsson, head of the Greenpeace Antarctic campaign, states, “Over the next 12 months, we have an opportunity to make history: to create an Antarctic Ocean sanctuary which would be the largest protected area on Earth.” She notes that it would also ensure healthier oceans that soak up carbon dioxide to moderate climate change. The proposal, submitted by the European Union and promoted by the German government, will be considered in October by the governmental bodies responsible for managing the Antarctic marine environment. It follows the successful adoption of the Ross Sea sanctuary in 2016.

But now a boxing-inspired therapy is giving people with Parkinson’s a chance to fight back. Rock Steady Boxing’s non-contact workouts have been proven to build strength, flexibility and speed—reversing, reducing or delaying Parkinson’s symptoms. By exercising with coaches who know the ropes, people at any stage of the disease can start feeling and functioning better.

signs of decline. And the symptoms aren’t just irritating and inconvenient; they steadily rob patients of a basic freedom, the ability to control their own bodies. Over time, Parkinson’s can hijack facial expressions, turn eating into a chore and make walking independently all but impossible.

www.NWFNaturally.com

The first program of its kind in the country, Rock Steady Boxing was founded in 2006 by Scott C. Newman, a former Marion County, Indiana, prosecutor living with Parkinson’s. There are more than 500 Rock Steady Boxing programs around the world, and nearly 26,000 people with Rock Steady training. Janis Cook, a registered nurse on the Emerald Coast, first heard about the program while visiting Indianapolis, her hometown. As her husband, Jack, had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, she attended a training to see what it was all about. She learned that the positive results achieved through Rock Steady training reflect what multiple clinical studies have shown: that forced exercise—that is, pushing a weakened or atrophied limb to work harder—measurably improves motor function in people with the disease. In 2016, the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity published a review of 14 clinical studies on the subject, concluding that exercising for an hour two to four times a week for 6 to 12 weeks “promotes significant positive effects on quality of life” in people with mild to moderate Parkinson's. Janis was especially encouraged by what she’d learned because there are few therapies for Parkinson’s patients beyond medication, which can have serious side effects. “Medicine helps only so much, and most patients are told there’s little hope beyond that,” she says. “Without movement programs like Rock Steady, the disease progresses, and doctors get to the point where they find little sense in continuing to test balance or mobility because they know it's not going to improve with medicine alone.” That’s what had happened with Jack. Medications eased his symptoms but hadn’t improved his motor skills. When his

Sixty thousand people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s annually. Janis knew that Jack wasn’t the only person on the Emerald Coast who could benefit from Rock Steady. She already owned one business, Ageless Solutions in Navarre; Jack was retired. But together they launched a new local business, one where Jack and others like him could finally fight back against Parkinson’s.

Remarkable results Rock Steady Boxing in Gulf Breeze has been open just a few weeks, but people are already beginning to discover it. Locals Bill and Connie Aldrich, who had been traveling to Tallahassee or Gulf Shores to train, are now working out close to home. Snowbirds are flocking to the center too. “Both men and women train here, and we see them steadily improving,” Justin says. “That’s true for me too. Since I’ve been boxing and coaching, I’m finally seeing improvement that medication never game me. Now only my left hand still tremors.” Rock Steady has become a labor of love for the Cooks as well as many of its members. Ian Fetterman, who is retired from the military; his wife, Alie; and Shawn Callagher are both members and volunteer coaches. While Rock Steady’s owners pay an affiliation fee and its members pay a fee as well, the Cooks say they just want the center to pay for itself so they can continue to provide help—and hope—to people with Parkinson's.

It’s been open for just seven ever-changing set of “problems” for climbmonths, but he says he’s already seen kids ers to solve. Experienced climbers will develop physically and mentally as they spend time studying the wall before they learn to free climb, scaling 16-foot walls ever touch it, Sheyka says. without harness or ropes.

“Climbing is 50 percent physical and 50 percent mental,” he says. “That’s hard for kids to get initially, because they want to jump on the wall and start climbing. But when we force them to sit back and analyze the problem before they attempt it, they tend to get better.”

Reaching new heights Sheyka describes one boy who was awkward and unsure when he first entered the gym but is now among its most promising young climbers, navigating new problems quickly and with confidence. “When he started bouldering, and started working all those parts of his body together, it was like a light bulb went on, and he became much more relaxed and fluid physically and even socially. Now it’s fun to watch him sit and just analyze a problem, and even watch us while we’re setting a problem and try to work through it before he gets to the wall. It’s really cool to watch him grow.” And then there’s Aurora, a slight girl who at first couldn’t make it three feet up the wall without losing her nerve and climbing down again. After a couple of private lessons with Rock Out instructor Josh Appleman, and with positive reinforcement from her dad, she conquered the wall. “That was a big day in the gym when Aurora made it to the top,” Sheyka recalls. “People who didn’t even know her were cheering her on. She spent the rest of the

day showing anyone who would watch how she climbed to the top of that problem. You couldn’t erase the smile off her face.”

Good sport Unlike some sports, climbing requires no special skills beyond being capable of participating in physical activity, Sheyka says. Kids who are already physically active may take to climbing more quickly, but anyone can learn and improve. And climbing offers many of the benefits of team sports besides the obvious physiological ones. “In climbing, people still work together—they encourage each other to perform, or they share techniques and skills—but at the end of the day, individual performance is still what determines the outcome,” Sheyka says. “That’s a great developmental piece, because we deal with failure a lot in bouldering. Everybody falls, and not just kids.” Kids at Rock Out learn how to fall— figuratively and literally, for safety’s sake. Newbies are required to watch a video demonstrating the proper technique, as the end of any climb involves either “down climbing” or falling onto the gym’s hightech padded flooring. Even there, what goes up must come down. But not for long.

n What to bring: Nothing. Technical climbing shoes and chalk can be rented or purchased on site. n What to wear: Comfortable clothes, including socks for use with rented shoes. n

Minimum age: There’s no set age, but the smallest shoe available is a children’s size 11. “If that’s too big, the child probably isn’t old enough to get a lot out of the experience,” owner Ken Sheyka says. Kids under 13 must have parental supervision.

Rock Out Climbing Gym is located at 2001 98 Palms Blvd., Suite 5, Destin, FL. For more information, visit RockOutClimbingGym.com.

Spring Program for Young Climbers Ken Sheyka opened Rock Out hoping to build a climbing community in Destin, and he knew that kids would be its foundation. So each season the gym offers a six-week bouldering program for young people, promoting technique, strength, balance and social engagement, with group and individual activities. Rock Out’s spring program begins March 6 for ages 9 to 12 and March 8 for ages 13 to 17. Each group meets once a week from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Groups are limited to 10 climbers to ensure a 5:1 studentteacher ratio. February 2018

T

he premise behind Ashley Pennewill’s coaching and counseling practice can be boiled down to two words: love yourself. It may be a simple rule, he says, but it works. He knows from experience. Born and raised in Pensacola, Pennewill was a math major at Washington and Lee University, a math teacher in Virginia and a computer programmer in Washington, DC, and California. Then his dad died, and what had seemed like a steady career path veered wildly off course. Pennewill moved back to Pensacola and began a new path. He earned his master’s in math at the University of Florida, but his real education was in spirituality. “I inhaled books, attended workshops and learned how to find peace by focusing on how I see things—not on the things themselves,” he says. “We can’t always control what happens in life, but we have a choice in how we see it. That’s where our power lies.” He laughs. “This really should be taught in middle school.” It should be, but it’s not. So Pennewill (now a licensed clinical social worker) teaches it to his clients. “It’s a powerful yet bite-sized way of loving ourselves—and if I can do it, anyone can,” he says. “This really is the source from which all other aspects of our lives spring, including happiness, abundance, health, relationships—how loving we are with ourselves.” If you tend to let others dominate you, you can benefit from his methods, he says. “It’s time to learn that you’re actually the strong one—amazing but true. And if you’ve done years of spiritual stuff but haven’t found true peace, then by all means come in. Because there’s a simpler, more powerful spiritual paradigm, and I’d like to share it with you.”

Love yourself. It is important to stay positive because beauty comes from the inside out. ~Jenn Proske

E

stablished in 1998, the Alternative Health Food Store in Pace offers high-quality natural supplements and essential oils, as well as one-hour natural health assessments with Jim Hill and Angel Hill-Reynolds. Jim, the store’s founder, has a PhD from Clayton College of Natural Health, holds a master herbalist diploma from Trinity College and is a member of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, American Association Nutritional Consultants, American Nutraceutical Association and International Iridology Practitioners Association. Angel holds a master’s degree in holistic nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health and a PhD in natural health and master iridologist from Trinity College of Natural Health. She is a certified natural health professional, an herbal information specialist through the American Botanical Society and a nutraceutical consultant through International College. She also has completed an energy healing certificate covering the foundations of energy medicine, including the biofield (human energy field), the chakras, music and sound, meditation, qigong and acupuncture. While both Jim and Angel provide natural health assessments in person, Angel also provides virtual assessments. “Although it is always preferable to do a natural health assessment in person, we realize that is not always possible,” she says. “That’s why I offer them via Skype or phone as well.” A virtual natural health assessment includes iridology, tongue and fingernail analysis and rayid iridology. (Traditional iridology focuses on the iris as an indicator of health problems in the body, while rayid iridology focuses on personality traits.) For a virtual assessment, the client takes photos of his or her eyes, fingernails and the top and bottom of the tongue and emails them to Angel, who will follow up with paperwork and an appointment by phone or Skype. After a discussion and questions, Angel will email her recommendations to the client so they can discuss them in real time. She will include any relevant information about supplements or diet and the client’s iris personality.

r. Rubina Azam stands out among pediatricians on the Emerald Coast because she has fellowship training in integrative medicine and is American board-certified in integrative and holistic medicine. That means she is uniquely qualified to take a whole-body approach to children’s health, always considering natural, non-pharmaceutical treatments and solutions. Azam received her fellowship training at the University of Arizona, Tucson, under the mentorship of Dr. Andrew Weil, a pioneer in integrative and holistic health and the founding father of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. She is board-certified in pediatrics and adolescent medicine as well, having completed her residency training at Howard University Hospital and Austin Children’s Hospital in Texas. She received extra training in the field of neonatal intensive care at the Hospital for Sick Children and Mount Sinai Hospital affiliated with University of Toronto. Her board certifications in the fields of integrative and holistic medicine as well as general pediatrics make her extremely comfortable in providing integrative and functional medicine consultations to patients of all ages, and treating a variety of illnesses, from autism and ADHD to autoimmune disease and arthritis. Azam is one of two physicians at Baldwin Pediatrics, which offers a variety of services, from newborn and infant care to sports physicals for teens. “With Baldwin Pediatrics, you get peace of mind in knowing that your kids are treated like they are our own,” she says. “We strive to work together to build and maintain trusting and respectful relationships with both children and their families.” While she provides primary care to children only, Azam now also offers functional medicine consultations to women. Call Baldwin Pediatrics to schedule a consultation.

Pranic Healing Puts Peace and Healing within Easy Reach The Center for Pranic Healing and Wellness 206 Center Rd., Gulf Breeze 850-380-0561 PranicHealingAndWellness.com

T

he Center for Pranic Healing and Wellness, Inc., established in 2003, offers a unique venue for both spiritual development and the study of energy healing. Under the direction of globally recognized senior Pranic Healing instructors Dr. Kenneth Williams and Connie Williams, the center offers a variety of meditation and energy healing courses as well as providing private healing sessions. “Modern Pranic Healing was developed and scientifically validated by GrandMaster Choa Kok Sui in the Philippines and spread across the globe in just 15 years,” Williams says. “Now in its 30th year, Pranic Healing is the fastest-growing integrative health system in the world. Physicians, CEOs, educators, scientists, architects, parents and people from all walks of life are studying and utilizing subtle energy to improve their lives at all levels.” Pranic Healing provides the science behind energy-based treatment, as it’s supported by research and testimonials from around the world, she says. The technique, and the concept behind it, are simple: “All beings have an aura, an energy field around them that looks like a luminous ball of light,” Williams explains. “Our aura works like the battery of a cellphone: it keeps the body healthy and alive. Anything in life that disturbs us—stress at work, fear, sadness and loneliness, arguments and frustration—makes this luminous energy field dimmer, imbalanced and full of holes and grayish energies. In long run, this appears as pain, discomfort, physical and even psychological problems. “With Pranic Healing, we can detect the problems and imbalances in the aura and carefully remove them using a fairly simple technique that involves no touch and no drugs. The best part is that anyone can learn to do it. Once the aura is balanced and bright, our physical and psychological health is assured.” While most people use medicine to remove their illnesses, Williams says, the ideal solution is to use complementary treatment like Pranic Healing along with medicine. She suggests that anyone who wants to try something different this year learn Pranic Healing and the Meditation on Twin Hearts.

hen Zach and Lydia McIntosh saw an opportunity to open a Clean Eatz on the Emerald Coast, they knew that the locals would eat it up. After all, before they opened the new café in Shalimar, there was nothing else like it around. Clean Eatz offers a variety of casual foods and meals designed with the individual customer’s dietary needs in mind. Folks who want to lose or gain weight, or just stay right where they are, can stay the course by choosing from Clean Eatz’s menu of customizable bowls and burgers or its unique sandwiches, snacks and wraps. And they don’t have to dine to enjoy the nutritious offerings at Clean Eatz. They can also take out, in a big way. "The opportunity to hand-select and preorder meals, in packages of 5, 10, 15 or 21, is a huge part of what set Clean Eatz apart from other area eateries. Busy customers who care about their health enjoy the meal plan option because it saves them time and money," Zach says. “Our goal is to give our customers the tools they need by preparing properly portioned meals with a balance of protein, carbs and fats,” he explains. “Our meals eliminate the guessing, temptation and lack of being prepared due to a busy lifestyle. And our meal plans offer them the opportunity to have a personal chef prepare every meal for them at a cost they can afford. We offer new meals every week.” Monday is meal plan pickup day at Clean Eatz, while Tuesday is the day to pick up special requests—meals prepared with extra protein, with half carbs or no carbs, or with gluten-free ingredients, for example. Orders must be submitted by Sunday at midnight. Of course, dine-in and grab-and-go options are always available at Clean Eatz, which offers catering too. Among its most popular menu items are its “buildables”: the Build a Bowl (choose a base, veggies, protein and sauce) and the Build a Burger (turkey, black bean or bison paired with a choice of specialty topping combinations, including the Holy Jalapeno, Skinny, Clean Eatz and Teriyaki). There are also several variety of sandwiches (including grilled goat cheese), six wraps and three flatbreads, as well as meals like “the Arnold,” designed for folks who want to build muscles. Clean Eatz even manages to make snacking healthy, offering its own versions of nachos and pita with hummus, as well as buffalo-style cauliflower. Clean eating not a diet but a lifestyle, the McIntoshes say, and their mission is to help people live it.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark. ~Michelangelo

aura Tyree, ERYT-500, began her yoga practice in 1986, while recovering from a sports-related injury from college, and began teaching in 1990. She launched Dragonfly Yoga in the fall of 1999, a year before moving to the Emerald Coast. She had vacationed along the coast for more than a decade and found it incredibly beautiful, but lacking a significant yoga community. When she began teaching classes in Destin, she was surprised to find that more than half her clients were driving over from Fort Walton Beach. “That’s when I got the idea of opening a studio there, in a quiet location right in the middle of downtown,” she says. Tyree launched Dragonfly Yoga Studies in 2001, consolidating all her training pro grams into a 10-month-long teacher’s course. She teaches public classes and facilitates yoga asana workshops and teacher training programs in Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. Then in the spring of 2015, she opened a second Fort Walton Beach studio, Hot Yoga Om. It offers classes for all levels at a temperature somewhere between 90 and 105 degrees, combining yoga with infrared heat. This radiant energy—the same kind we receive directly from the sun, not an artificial heater using a coil or flame—is absorbed by the skin and heats the body from within, she says. (She advises students to bring a yoga mat, a large towel, a dry shirt and drinking water.) “I believe this practice will draw in the next generation of yogis,” Tyree says. “It challenges the body, strengthens the mind and opens the radiant heart.” Tyree is also a teacher with Yoga Anytime, an online yoga studio that delivers world-class streaming yoga videos anywhere, anytime.

Modern-Day Healer Inspired by Her Own “Awakening” Felicia McQuaid The Healing Clinic 184 Brooks St. SE #1 Fort Walton Beach, FL 850-217-2771 TheHealingClinicFWB.com

F

elicia McQuaid is a modern-day healer who has dedicated her life to healing herself and others since her “awakening” in the late 1990s. “I’ve seen miracles take shape in my life since I woke up from the path of pain, heartbreak and suffering,” she says. “In 2000 I had hit a wall and was simply looking for relief. Life responded by telling me to look inside for my answers.” McQuaid comes from an abusive past, having spent much of her adolescence in foster care and then existing in a marriage where she lived day to day in fear for her life. She bounced from Kansas to North Carolina to escape this abuse, only to end up in addiction and more pain. By the time she moved to Florida in 1996, her life had fallen apart. Overweight, depressed and struggling with debilitating back pain, she turned to yoga. This was the first step in a new direction. In 2001, she took yoga teacher training and experienced the Japanese healing art of Reiki; soon she was teaching yoga full time and learning Reiki. Since 2005, she has shared Reiki and yoga with thousands of individuals. As the owner of The Healing Clinic of Fort Walton Beach, she leads programs of yoga, Reiki and her newest passion, ThetaHealing. “ThetaHealing allows me to blend all my practices into one modality of real and lasting change,” she says. Throughout 2017, she trained and traveled extensively to become a ThetaHealing teacher and a medical intuitive. “I believe in miracles and have the privilege of witnessing them daily in my clinic,” McQuaid says. “I know if I can heal, anyone can. It’s a matter of saying yes to change.”

ou’ve heard of many of the services offered at Indigo Earth Spa—like medical massage, vitamin C facials and probably even chakra balancing. Other services may be new to you, like Hawaiian LomiLomi. But all the services at Indigo Earth Spa have three things in common, says owner Melissa Smith: They’re 100 percent organic and natural, they’re personalized, and they help the body heal. “We massage according to the client’s dosha without them even knowing, because there is intent behind every massage given each time they visit,” she says. “We customize each session and hand-blend the ingredients from our apothecary for each session and for each and every spa service. The client and therapist together can custom-create and hand-blend the body scrubs used for the service, and the client gets to take the extra home.” "Whatever the service," she says, "the intent is to heal. We bring our clients back to earth with natural, organic remedies for the body, mind and soul. Whether it’s massage, herbals, nutrition, meditation or skin health, a combination of therapies provides help for the body to heal itself. The power of the herbal remedies that we combine with massage and body care improves their well-being and renews their energy. Our clients always want to come back.” "No matter how many times they do come back, they’ll be treated to custom services," she adds. “Even if they book the same spa service, our sessions are not always the same. We change them according to the client’s needs every time they come in.” What doesn’t change is the spa’s tranquil atmosphere, which Smith has carefully cultivated, inspired by the elements of nature, to create a sanctuary for her clients. “We’ve designed our treatments as transcendental experiences,” she says. “They don’t just nourish the skin; they also restore the mind and feed the soul. Our curative menu offers deep healing and more than 50 harmonious rituals.” Among the services offered at Indigo Earth Spa are massage, facials and skin care, body treatments, nail care, waxing and stress-relieving herbal remedies. Packages and seasonal specials are also available.

Leading Rheumatologist Draws Patients from All Over Aymen Kenawy, M.D., FACP, FACR Emerald Coast Rheumatology 3890 Jenks Ave. Lynn Haven 850-215-6400 DrKenawy.com

E

ven if you don’t know what a rheumatologist does, you know someone who needs one—and it might be you. A rheumatologist specializes in the nonsurgical evaluation and treatment of more than 100 different types of arthritis and abnormalities of the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis is perhaps the best-known rheumatic disease, affecting around 25 million Americans, but there are plenty of others too, including osteoarthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, osteoporosis and lupus, just to name a few. Rheumatologic diseases are often hard to diagnose and manage. They can come with a variety of vague and frustrating symptoms, such as fever, rash, weakness, fatigue, unintentional weight loss, and joint or muscle pain. Dr. Aymen Kenawy sees the symptoms all the time, as his practice is dedicated solely to the care of patients with rheumatologic diseases. Some of the diseases he diagnoses and treats or rare—Have you ever heard of Adult Stills disease? How about Henoch-Schonlein Purpura or Behçet’s disease?—so he says it’s not unusual for primary-care providers to misdiagnose them. “Our patients come from all walks of life, both men and women over the age of 15,” he says. “While the majority of our patients live in Northwest Florida, patients travel from other parts of Florida and surrounding areas such as Alabama and Georgia to be treated here.” One of the state-of-the-art tools that Dr. Kenawy uses to diagnose and treat disease is musculoskeletal ultrasonography. “With the advancements of ultrasound technology, we are capable of providing an accurate and early diagnosis of arthritis,” he says. “Furthermore, the administration of injections under ultrasound guidance greatly enhances the accuracy of procedures while reducing unneeded discomfort and potential complications.” Dr. Kenawy also offers infusion therapy, the intravenous route of administering medications and regenerative cells to treat arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. With cutting-edge technology and the latest treatments and therapies along with an integrative approach, Dr. Kenawy has become a leading specialist in the field of rheumatology and arthritis treatment in Bay County and beyond.

Cosmetic Gynecologist Helps Women Inside and Out Karen E. Kennedy, M.D., FACOG, RPh 1118 Gulf Breeze Pkwy., Ste. 201 Gulf Breeze Harvest Village 7552 Navarre Pkwy., Unit 18 Navarre 850-916-7766 KarenKennedyMD.com

D

escribing Dr. Karen Kennedy as a gynecologist doesn’t quite do her justice. She handles all the issues traditionally associated with her medical specialty, such as contraception, surgical sterilization, hysterectomy, hormone therapy, abnormal pap smears, menopausal symptoms and endometriosis. But as an expert in cosmetic gynecology, she also treats more nuanced issues—either lifelong problems or problems that have developed over time—that negatively affect a woman’s quality of life, for physical or psychological reasons. Often these are subjects so personal that a woman might not have discussed them with her own partner. Painful intercourse, for example, is a common symptom of postmenopause. Kennedy can treat the problem either through hormone therapy or MonaLisa Touch, the first laser treatment for vaginal atrophy and dryness, which can make intercourse difficult. In fact, Kennedy’s office is the first practice in Northwest Florida to offer that cutting-edge therapy. That’s par for the course for Kennedy, who has made it her mission to research and become trained in the latest and most effective treatments for gynecological issues, including cosmetic procedures for aesthetic or comfort reasons. She has also broadened the scope of her training to offer nonsurgical treatments for the skin, hair and body, such as Pelleve Wrinkle Reduction, Monat naturally based hair care, and SculpSure Laser Treatment, a body contouring system designed to reduce stubborn fat. “Due to hormonal and chemical changes in the body that cannot be altered, our shape changes through life,” she explains. “This is generally what we mean by ‘stubborn fat’—the kind that even weight loss and exercise will not decrease.” With Kennedy’s menu of professional services, every woman can find a way to feel more comfortable in her own skin.

Natural Stress Relief and Detox in Pensacola MODE Mind and Body 3101 E. Cervantes St. Pensacola 850-316-4149 ModeMindAndBody.com

A

rvind Mani is proof positive that flotation therapy can yield real physical benefits. It was after he tried the therapy himself, in a float tank in New Orleans, that he was finally relieved of the back spasms that had plagued him for years. Mani knew flotation therapy yields psychological benefits too, particularly stress relief. After realizing that float centers were scarce on the Emerald Coast, Mani decided to open one himself. MODE Mind and Body in Pensacola offers not just float therapy, but also whole-body sonic vibration, far infrared therapy and magnetic resonance therapy—all designed to reduce stress and, by extension, its physiological effects. “There are numerous emotional and physical disorders that have been linked to stress, including depression, anxiety, heart attacks and immune system disturbances,” Mani says. “Stress can also have direct effects on the skin, damage the gastrointestinal system and contribute to insomnia and degenerative neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease.” The therapies at MODE Mind and Body also provide a natural way to rid the body of built-up toxins, which are stressors too. “It’s easy to do things that are bad for us, and when those bad things start to accumulate, you start to feel gross and it’s time to detox,” Mani explains. “Our services help your body get the junk out safely so you can look and feel like you always do the right thing—no one has to know.” Mani admits he is obsessed with helping the body restore itself without medications, especially when the hazards of pharmaceuticals—particularly the narcotics frequently prescribed for pain—are so well known. “We offer a way to experience profound pain relief without having to turn to medications,” Mani says. “Our holistic pain management services address the root cause of most pain, which is chronic inflammation. By relaxing your nervous system, increasing blood flow and accelerating lymphatic drainage, your body can begin to restore itself.” The therapies offered at MODE Mind and Body are founded on a concept that Eastern and indigenous cultures have always known but Western medicine has only recently accepted—that the states of the mind and body are intricately related. Hence the quote that’s front and center on the company website: “Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one.” Those words are from Dr. Hans Selye, who in the 1930s began his pioneering research into the body’s response to stressors. By opening MODE Mind and Body, Mani has become a pioneer too—at least on the Emerald Coast.

anice Skene, owner of Salon Vedat, makes sure that all her customers walk out the door with green hair. Not green as in color—although she can probably do that too—but green as in natural. Nontoxic. Organic. Anyone familiar with the ammonia smell of traditional salons knows that “green” isn’t a beauty industry standard. But Skene is doing her best to change that. She has long been concerned about the negative health effects of ammonia, for both the client and the hairdresser, as it is corrosive to the hair, irritates the skin and eyes and can harm the bronchial system. It also damages the environment. The dangers of ammonia are no secret, she says, and she’s frustrated that so many salon owners still use ammonia products in their salons. “I think it is just entrenched thinking that non-ammonia coloring products are not as effective as ammonia products,” she says. “Not only do some owners and hairdressers think that ammonia-free color doesn’t offer superior coverage and nourishing effects, but they also believe that it doesn’t have as many beautiful shades or glosses.” As someone with 30 years’ experience as a hairdresser and as a former educator in the barber and cosmetology fields, she has one response to that thinking: Wrong. Salon Vedat has long offered Organic Color System, a hair care line made in England, where the government is stricter about chemicals used in products available to the public. Only 400 Americans salon carried that line in 2008, but by 2013 that number had grown to 1,200. Skene believes the turning point in the American salon industry came in 2012, when L’Oréal came on board with its own non-ammonia product line. (She notes that Organic Color System offers 65 colors, to L’Oréal’s 49). “Now we can finally get serious with educating women who are concerned about their health but still want great coloring results,” she said. “The time is now for women to go into a salon and ask, ‘What color do you use? Does it have ammonia?’ If the answer is 'yes', they need to make an appointment elsewhere.” Salon Vedat also carries organic lines for straightening and curling hair. Skene says these products last longer and leave the hair healthy, like a conditioner and styling product in one. With Salon Vedat, you don’t have to wait for St. Patrick’s Day to get green hair.

Stone Soup Offers Local Art and Intuitive Guidance Stone Soup ISC 700 Beal Parkway Unit C Fort Walton Beach 850-533-6565 IntuitiveSpiritualCenter.org

tone Soup is a shop where local artists sell their one-of-a-kind creations, such as jewelry, paintings, incense, crystals, pottery, wind chimes, semiprecious stones, hand-painted furniture and even custom-etched glasses. But owner Jan Myers says the shop is just the most tangible manifestation of a larger mission, as Stone Soup is also an intuitive spiritual center. “Our goal is to provide a place where likeminded people can gather to help each other learn and grow,” she says. To achieve this goal, Stone Soup offers a wide variety of classes and services, including guided meditations, open discussions, spiritual workshops, seminars, spiritual energy work, intuitive development workshops, creative classes, drumming circles, spiritual guidance coaching, life coaching, intuitive/psychic/medium readings, tarot readings and angel readings. (Visit its website, IntuitiveSpiritualCenter.org, to see a full calendar of classes and workshops.) Stone Soup also hosts metaphysical fairs and special events like the Faery Festival. There’s even a reading library onsite where those interested in intuitive development and spirituality can enrich their own personal journey. “We’re a professionally operated spiritual center utilizing the gifts and talents of many lightworkers,” Myers says. “Our spiritual work comes from the one source of universal light and love.” She says, "Stone Soup offers resources and guidance for people who might be just waking up to a new spiritual path, who have noticed their intuition kicking in but don’t know what to do with it, or who have been following a spiritual path for a long time but are trying to go deeper." “Many of our visitors are already receiving information from Spirit that will help in their lives, but they want to better understand their experiences and how to focus, expand and use their abilities, either to help other people or to help themselves. A reading from one of our intuitive readers can uncover answers or give them confirmation that what they are thinking is correct.” Myers believes God gave us our intuitive abilities so we would know when and how to protect ourselves. “As Dr. Wayne Dyer said, ‘If prayer is you talking to God, your intuition is God talking to you.’ So learn how to listen to what you are receiving. Intuition and psychic are truly the same thing—just misunderstood.”

r. Susan M. Welch is one of a small number of progressive dentists who have embraced functional medicine. She doesn’t just treat symptoms; she focuses on the well-being of the whole person, recognizing that oral health is linked to the health of the entire body. “What I am developing within my practice is a program toward overall wellness, beginning from the perspective of the mouth, which is the beginning of the gastrointestinal tract and airway,” she says. “We help our patients learn how they can improve their health.” Nutrition is another area that Welch is passionate about in her functional approach to whole-body health. “Give the body what it needs, and it heals itself,” she says. “The inflammation of gum disease and jaw and throat problems, for example, can be addressed nutritionally. A supplement packet is often a part of my treatment program for a patient.” While she provides general dental health care and cosmetic dentistry for her entire patient base—or patient family, as she often refers to them—for the past 11 years, she has focused her continuing education on TMJ disorders, chronic head and neck pain, and snoring and obstructive sleep apnea appliance therapy. Physicians often refer patients to Welch for treatment for sleep disordered breathing, as she can frequently address the problem with orthotics. She often consults other members of her patients’ medical treatment team. “I actively seek and work with other medical and dental specialists to make sure patients are receiving the best care for their individual situation and to move them toward whole-body health,” she says. Welch is a member of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Christian Medical Dental Association and American Academy of Facial Esthetics.

practicing physician since 1974, Dr. Eddie Zant spent decades as an anesthesiologist before branching out into more pioneering fields of medicine. Since 2003 he has offered hyperbaric medicine for concussions, traumatic brain injury, autism and other complicated illnesses. He also offers chelation therapy and medical marijuana. HBOT is a medical treatment in which the patient is enclosed in a pressure chamber and breathes 100 percent oxygen at greater than one atmosphere pressure. (Air contains about 21 percent oxygen.) “HBOT increases the amount of oxygen to all cells of the body, including the brain, up to 15 times the normal amount,” Zant says. “Over a series of treatments, these high oxygen levels have a positive effect on many organ systems—decreasing chronic inflammation, deactivating and clearing toxins, stimulating damaged nerve and brain cells, helping kill harmful bacteria and boosting the growth of new capillary blood vessels. It also has a positive effect on the body’s immune system.” Chelation is a chemical process in which a substance is used to bind molecules, such as metals or minerals, so that they can be removed by the kidneys and excreted. In 2012, the American Heart Association reported on a study showing a decrease in adverse cardiac events as a result of a specific chelation therapy to remove calcium from the bloodstream. Zant follows the study’s protocol of 30 once-a-week, three-hour IV sessions, followed by 10 once-a-month treatments. In keeping with his pioneering practice, Zant has also received medical marijuana certification. Since last year’s passage of medical marijuana legislation in Florida, he has established himself as one of the Gulf Coast’s premier physicians in the field.

ADVERSITY How to Strengthen Your Resilience Muscle by April Thompson

At one time or another, an estimated 70 percent of people experience a life-altering traumatic event, and most grow stronger from surviving it, according to decades of research by leading institutions like Harvard and Yale universities and the University of Pennsylvania. We can prepare now for life’s inevitable hurdles and setbacks by developing the skills and tools of resilience.

I

t’s an incredibly hopeful message: We can go through the most terrible things imaginable and still get through to a better place,” says David B. Feldman, associate professor of counseling psychology at California’s Santa Clara University and co-author with Lee Daniel Kravetz of Supersurvivors: The Surprising Link Between Suffering and Success. Such researchers have found that, like elastic stretched beyond its normal limits, people often don’t just bounce back to their old form, but stretch and expand in new ways. The pair conducted in-depth case studies of survivors of extreme traumatic experiences that went on to do bold things. Just one case in point: After losing a leg in a car accident, college basketball player Casey Pieretti reinvented himself as a successful Hollywood stuntman. According to many studies, 60 to 80 percent of people grow in some way from personal trauma, known as “post-traumatic growth”, according to Feldman. “It can be as simple as appreciating each day more. It can mean deepening relationships. It may result in a renewed sense of spirituality. Or, it might take one’s life in a dramatically different direction,” he says. Ila Eckhoff, a financial executive in New York City, has experienced more than her share of challenges: developing cerebral palsy as a toddler, enduring

12 childhood surgeries, losing her mother at age 11 and four years ago, her husband. “All of the struggles and losses brought me here, now,” says Eckhoff. “Nobody ever said life was easy. We have greater appreciation for the things that we had to struggle to achieve.” Choosing self-directedness instead of self-pity in the face of challenges differentiates those that thrive from those that merely survive, observes Catherine Morisset, a life coach from Ottawa, Canada, who specializes in resilience. “It’s taking responsibility for life and managing the way you want to live it. We all have choices, even in the face of difficulty,” she says.

Charged: The Eduardo Garcia Story documents the journey of chef and outdoorsman Eduardo Garcia, whose life changed irrevocably when he was jolted with 2,400 volts of electricity while hiking in Montana. Garcia lost his hand, ribs and muscle mass, but survived the injury with the help of his former partner, and became an athlete and speaker for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Unbroken depicts the life of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini, who survived 47 days on a raft after a near-fatal plane crash in World War II, only to be captured by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. The film is based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Laura Hillenbrand, herself the survivor of a disabling chronic illness. couple. It was an amazing, healing experience,” reflects Huffman. Forgiveness—whether for others or ourself—is another key to help us move forward, reports Feldman. “Often, people can get stuck in blame, but resentment keeps people shackled to the past. If and when a person is ready to forgive, widespread research indicates that it can lead to better health outcomes.”

Strengthening Our Resilience Muscle Experts point out that there isn’t any one perfect formula or single must-have trait for building resilience, and none we can’t develop. Learning a skill like mindfulness is an easy place to start. “Resilient people don’t try to avoid stress, but learn how to manage and master it,” says Southwick. “Mindfulness meditation requires practice, but through it, you can learn to regulate emotions and relax the nervous system.”

40

Eckhoff practices mindfulness several times a day with a one-minute gratitude meditation. “I have five things I am most grateful for. I close my eyes, take a deep breath and say them. It brings me focus, reduces stress and reminds me of how lucky I am,” she says. Morisset suggests making incremental changes to strengthen our resilience muscles. “Success builds success and failure builds failure, so do something you know you can accomplish and build on that,” she counsels. Writing can also be a good coping tool, according to Hensch. “Just write about your emotions. It’s amazing how much you can learn about yourself and how calming it can be.” Good times are the best times to begin “resilience training” notes Hensch. “I sought out a therapist once I had turned the corner after my divorce and was dating someone and my business was taking off. It was precisely because I knew something else would likely happen, and I wanted to

be better prepared for it,” he recalls. Applying positive self-talk when something blindsides us helps, as does not expecting to handle things perfectly. “There’s nothing wrong with just staying afloat when you’re in the middle of trauma or adversity. One key to happiness in life is just managing expectations. It’s okay to be anxious, sad and worried at times—in fact, it’s healthy,” says Hensch. Hardships are just that: hard. However, with time and experience, resilient individuals come to trust their ability to get through them, large and small. “Resiliency is not about how you bounce back from a single traumatic event; it’s how you respond every day to the challenges that life presents,” Eckhoff has learned. “Repetitive use of this ‘muscle’ builds strength and enables you to do more and sometimes, the impossible.” Connect with April Thompson, in Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com.

MEDITATION THAT WORKS

Tips for Finding the Right Practice

M

by April Thompson

ore Americans than ever before are seeking the benefits of meditation, which notably improves mental, physical and spiritual health. Choosing from its many styles and traditions can be daunting for a new meditator, as is figuring out how to incorporate such a practice into a busy life.

Universal Appeal “Meditation is for people of all spiritual backgrounds. As a tool to develop awareness, it can enhance what you already believe and practice,” assures Diana Lang, the Los Angeles author of Opening to Meditation: A Gentle, Guided Approach and a spiritual counselor who has taught meditation for 37 years. For Jackie Trottmann, a Christian author from St. Louis, Missouri, there is no contradiction between a meditation practice and her faith; rather, they complement one another. For her, “Prayer is like talking to God, whereas meditation is listening to God. Before I came to meditation, I had been doing all the talking.” 42

She came to meditation during a trying period working in sales and marketing. “When a friend gave me a meditation CD, I popped it in after a stressful conference call and felt instantly calmed. Ten years later, meditation has gone beyond quieting the mind; it’s sunk into my heart and spirit,” says Trottmann, who went on to publish her own CDs at GuidedChristianMeditation.com. “I came to meditation tired of habitual suffering and stress, and wanting to be happier,” says Bill Scheinman, a coach in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which he refers to as “mindfulness practice without the Buddhist jargon.” The Oakland, California, instructor has taught mindfulness in settings ranging from corporations to prisons, drawing from a range of meditative disciplines and 23 years of intensive practice.

Begin Modestly “Millions are seeking more mindfulness through meditation, but don’t know how to go about it,” says Sean Fargo, a Berkeley, California, meditation instructor and

former Buddhist monk. “The key is to take baby steps, like going to the gym for the first time. Start by practicing a few minutes a day; just pay attention to something such as the sensations of breathing, without judgment.” “Having taught meditation to tens of thousands of people, I would say the most common issue is that beginning meditators don’t think they’re doing it right. It’s important not to judge yourself or have loaded expectations about the experience,” notes Lang. She suggests starting wherever we are right now, adding, “Whatever book, class or teacher you first stumble upon is a clue.” But that doesn’t call for rigidly adhering to a particular type of meditation forever.

Assess Benefits “Shop around and try different things, but at some point, you will begin to discover what works for you,” advises Scheinman. In trying to decide which meditation practice is right for us, “Go with what feels juicy,” says Fargo, who founded MindfulnessExercises.com, offering 1,500 free mindfulness meditations, worksheets and talks. “You’re more likely to do what feels alive and enlivening.” The act of meditating can be uncomfortable, but the challenges are part of its power. Scheinman remarks. “If you establish a daily practice, eventually, you will become more clear-headed, kinder and happier. That’s how you know your practice is working—not how you feel during meditation itself.” Consistency is key. It’s not effective to only meditate when you feel good, he says.

Overview of Options

Mindfulness practices go by many names, from vipassana to MBSR, and can be done sitting or walking, but all are focused on cultivating moment-to-moment awareness. “Mindfulness is about being aware: deliberately paying attention to body sensations, thoughts and emotions. Focused attention is on the body, heart and mind,” explains Scheinman. Guided visualization differs from most forms of meditation in that the

meditator is intentionally creating a mental image, typically one of a peaceful, beautiful place. Typically, the goal of a guided visualization is deep relaxation and stress reduction. Mantra meditations involve continuous repetition of a word, phrase or sound, drawing spiritual power from the sound’s vibration, as well as its meaning. Many mantras are uttered in a tradition’s native language, such as shanti, meaning peace in Sanskrit. Teachers like Lang prefer to use mantras in English that meditators can more easily grasp, such as, “Love is the way.” Breathing meditation. Meditation experts say our ever-present breath is a sound foundation for a meditation practice, as well as an easy place to start. “Tapping into the power of our breath is vital; it cleanses our system,” says Trottmann. Top 10 Heart Healthy Choices by Judith Fertig

H

ow do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning once penned this unforgettable line to her husband and fellow poet, Robert Browning. Let us also count the ways to improve our loved ones’ heart health: Lower blood pressure. Modulate irregular heartbeats. Avoid plaque build-up in arteries. Improve blood flow to the heart. We can love our hearts with 10 superfoods that just might make perfect ingredients for a Valentine’s Day meal, starting with dark chocolate.

1

Cocoa powder. Cacao’s flavanols lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke and act as antioxidants to prevent inflammation. Dr. JoAnn E. Manson, a physician, doctor of public health and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School affiliate Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, confirms, “Between 400 and 900 milligrams (mg) a day of cocoa flavanols may favorably affect several mechanisms and pathways related to cardiovascular disease prevention.” Not all chocolate is created equal. Manson recommends chocolate with cocoa or cacao as the first ingredient, not sugar. She

and her colleagues are currently conducting the Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study, a large-scale, randomized study of 18,000 U.S. men and women testing the benefits of ingesting 600 mg per day of cocoa flavanols.

2

Raspberries.

Just one-half cup of berries a day can provide plenty of phytonutrients and antioxidants for decreasing inflammation and preventing heart disease, says Wendy Bazilian, a doctor of public health and registered dietitian in San Diego, and author of The SuperFoodsRx Diet: Lose Weight with the Power of SuperNutrients. “Whirl them into a breakfast smoothie, add them to a green salad or combine them with dark chocolate for a tasty, heart-healthy dessert,” she advises.

3

Salmon.

Full of omega-3 fatty acids, wild-caught salmon (about two six-ounce weekly servings) helps reduce systemic inflammation and risk of developing atherosclerosis, hypertension and stroke, according to Dr. Josh Axe, of Nashville, Tennessee. Beyond prevention, omega-3s in oily fish are also

widely known to treat atherosclerosis, normalize heart rhythms and help lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as significantly lower the risk of stroke.

4

Pumpkin seeds. High in mag-

nesium—about 764 mg per cup— roasted pumpkin seeds, or pepitas, top the list of heart-healthy nuts and seeds. Magnesium is an important electrolyte that helps the heart fire on all cylinders and not skip a beat. Improvements in lipid profiles can occur with a daily intake of 365 mg, or about a half-cup, of pepitas. Enjoy roasted pumpkin seeds as a snack or scatter them in a salad, bowl of chili or soup for a delicious crunch.

5

Avocados. Fresh avocados supply

magnesium, plus they’re a good source of potassium, another electrolyte the heart needs for optimum functioning. “You probably know bananas and citrus fruits are top sources of potassium, but I like avocados because they also supply healthy fats,” says Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, a boardcertified cardiologist with the HeartMD Institute, in Manchester, Connecticut.

6

Almonds. Sinatra recommends

7

a handful of almonds a day to raise HDL, a form of “good” cholesterol he likens to a “lipid garbage truck” that picks up oxidized “bad” LDL in the bloodstream and carries it to the liver for processing.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil.

Cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil with a high phenol content can help lower blood pressure (via about two tablespoons daily), make more efficient and

protective HDL cholesterol, and protect the inner lining of arteries.

MEditation Group

8

Beet Juice.

A 2015 study in the journal Hypertension found that two daily eight-ounce glasses of beet juice can help reduce high blood pressure. Beets contain a natural dietary nitrate found in previous studies to lower high blood pressure. Enjoy beet juice in smoothies, as a tart drink known as a “shrub” (beet juice with raspberry vinegar) or in soups like borscht.

9

Garlic. Allicin, the

sulfur compound that gives garlic its distinctive aroma, helps keep blood thin and flowing optimally, says Sinatra. The freshest chopped garlic offers the best benefits, according to a study from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

10

Pomegranate. Drinking about one cup of pomegranate juice a day for three months can improve blood flow to the heart, reports a study in the American Journal of Cardiology. The ultimate reason of all to keep our hearts in good working order was voiced by Helen Keller: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks and foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

wise words

Mark Rosenfeld’s Secrets for Successful Love Matches by Alison James

A

ustralian author, speaker and dating coach Mark Rosenfeld knows firsthand the challenges of navigating romantic relationships. After struggling with shyness, he took on a confidence-boosting job as an exotic dancer in 2011, working with men at both ends of the assertiveness spectrum. In this milieu, he gained a better understanding of men’s thoughts and actions related to women. Through his career as a dancer while in his own satisfying relationship, Rosenfeld also personally communicated with about 50,000 women, many of which opened up about their own trials and tribulations with dating. A resident of Brisbane, Rosenfeld launched the website MakeHimYours.com. au in 2014, sharing what he’s learned in order to help women stop experiencing frustrations in dating and start attracting healthy, happy relationships. He’s also participated in the conversation at The Good Men Project on what enlightened masculinity means in the 21st century.

What are the greatest misconceptions women have about men? Both genders face significant, yet different, challenges, and so believe the other gender has it easier. Men want to feel cared for and heard. Many are terrified to approach a woman; they fear rejection or not being a good enough provider. Often, when a woman perceives that a man needs space, it’s his fears and insecurities that are keeping him from deeper intimacy.

What mistakes do women make in the courtship phase? Women often get ahead of themselves in the dating stage, instead of taking enough time to let things unfold. I tell women 46

to slow down and date multiple men to counter that tendency. It’s also good to “widen the funnel” and date different types of men, especially if you seem to attract the so-called “wrong” type. Keep deep emotions and commitments out of the courtship phase, while you discover who someone is and if they are right for you.

Why do both genders need to nurture their feminine energy? As a man, I can spend too much time on my masculine energy and be too logical and focused on end results. I can lose a sense of self, presence and connection with the present moment. Meditation is one entry point; I find practicing a martial art is grounding, as is spending quality time with a woman. If an individual spends too much time in either energy, imbalance occurs; everyone has to find their own equilibrium.

What are good ways to practice self-care while seeking and sustaining a relationship? Find activities in your day that make you feel nurtured, happy and good about your-

self. Take care of your health, home and friendships. Exercise some independence. Make your life fulfilling, so that men want to be part of your exciting days.

How can we best navigate the world of online dating and other means of meeting potential mates? It starts with your mindset. If you think you will be on a dating site for three weeks and find a mate, don’t bother. Be prepared to engage for a minimum of six to 12 months. Consider bad dates as reasons to laugh. Think of it as “online introducing”. It’s up to you to quickly get past the chat stage to real communication and real dates. Online potential mates don’t have a “vibe” for you like they do in person. I suggest talking with prospects on the phone and keeping first dates short. Keep an open mind to recognize prospects you might otherwise overlook. Online dating is a supplement, not a substitute, for meeting compatible men or women in real life. You should be tapping networks of friends, family and colleagues to make connections, as well as being open to meeting potential mates at public events.

Which signs indicate that a dating prospect wants to pursue a genuine relationship? Emotional momentum, combined with consistency, is an important sign. Anyone can put in effort for a little while; but do they periodically disappear? No one wants someone they feel a connection with to physically or emotionally wander away, or risk the object of their affection thinking they aren’t interested. Make sure they are reciprocating the effort you put in. Prioritizing is another sign; a person will find a way to see someone they care about. A key third sign is integration. They will want to respectfully integrate you into their world more and more, introducing you to friends, family and work colleagues. Look for this overall pattern to continue over time. It’s vital to let people prove themselves with their actions. Alison James is a freelance writer in Washington, D.C.

SELF-LOVE

See What Planting A Seed Can Accomplish

by Charlie Chaplin

A

s I began to love myself, I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth. Today, I know, this is AUTHENTICITY. As I began to love myself, I understood how much it can offend somebody as I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it RESPECT. As I began to love myself, I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it MATURITY.

Igor Brisker/Shutterstock.com

As I began to love myself, I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm. Today I call it SELF-CONFIDENCE. As I began to love myself, I quit stealing my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm.

Today I call it SIMPLICITY. As I began to love myself, I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health—food, people, things, situations and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism. Today I know it is LOVE OF ONESELF. As I began to love myself, I quit trying to always be right, and ever since, I was wrong less of the time.

As I began to love myself, I refused to go on living in the past and worrying about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where everything is happening.

Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it FULFILLMENT. As I began to love myself, I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this connection WISDOM OF THE HEART. We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born.
