“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato “At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist.

Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.” Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion

“Chazael lotion is amazing! After being shot six times on March 6, 2016, nothing helped alleviate the severe swelling in my feet until my physical therapist gave me this lotion. He said it works equally well in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, muscle spasms, and increasing flexibility in joints plagued by arthritis. Please try this product!”

Pastor Tim, Coeur d’Alene “Chazael has become my go-to lotion! I am a physical therapist and have started using this incredible lotion with my patients. When pain is decreased, therapy is more effective. The lotion absorbs quickly into the skin and does not have a lingering smell. Chazael is a game changer for me.”

Laura Steininger, DPT “After 20 plus years of practicing manual therapy, my hands can become stiff and swollen. Within five minutes of rubbing in the Chazael I could make a fist with ease and the swelling in my joints was significantly reduced. I use Chazael daily for myself and my patients.”

Jason Bruns, MPT, OCS “This lotion is an absolute miracle! It keeps my legs from cramping up, especially at night, and it stops many of the pains I experience!”

t’s October already, and Halloween is just around the corner! I love this spooky holiday almost as much as my kids do. A day to dress up and “be” whoever you want. A night to willingly face your fears and enjoy the thrill of being super creeped out. I remember going to haunted corn mazes with my friends back in high school and absolutely screaming our heads off while being chased by chainsaw wielding madmen (I mean, we knew it was coming). Or taking a group of international students to a haunted house and hysterically laugh-crying as freaky circus clowns popped up and yelled in our faces, scaring the bajesus out of us. It’s what I like to call “fun fear.” It was fun fear because we knew it was fake and we were asking for it. Those were paid actors chasing us around with chainless saws and clown makeup, so we knew deep down we were safe. But the fear and the threat of harm still felt very real to our brains and bodies, which is why we all reacted accordingly by screaming, running, crying, grabbing each other, cussing, hyperventilating, and then eventually laughing at the fun of it all. This got me thinking about the non-fun fear we encounter in our everyday lives and the profound impact it has on us. Most of the fear-inducing situations we face on a daily basis are non-life threatening; yet our bodies react as though a creepy clown just popped up out of nowhere. For instance, that guy who flipped you off on the freeway, the email you received rejecting your proposal, or the ‘we need to talk’ text from your partner, and on it goes. These common incidences can generate major fear responses, which express as panic, defensiveness, anger, high blood pressure, stress, anxiety, future tripping or any other go-to freak-out response. But what if all these seemingly fear-based situations are lies? What if they are simply habitual responses from the past that are trying to get our attention in the present? What if they’re trying to show us where we need healing so that we can stop resisting and actually flow with life while focusing on who and what we have come here to be? Or at the very least, who we are not. Because we are not our fears. False Evidence Appearing Real—this is the best acronym I’ve encountered regarding the truth of fear. In a recent Sunday message at Unity Spiritual Center, Rev. Dr. Jane Simmons talked about the illusion of fear (the non-lifethreatening kind) and how it can serve as a powerful ally in our lives, showing us the parts of ourselves that are in need of healing. “Fear is always happening within a greater space in you that is not afraid,” she emphasized. That space within that is not afraid is where our spirit lives, where our soul lives, where God (or whatever you call that which is greater than yourself) lives. That is the space where I want to exist more often and being conscious of my own inner circus clowns and chainsaw wielding madmen is where it begins. Those guys are as scared as I am, so instead of allowing them to ignite a drama storm within me, I’m going to lovingly investigate what it is they’re so afraid of. And with some awareness, self-compassion and guidance, I can create a new habit: to Face Everything And Rise. Won’t you join me? Happy October Friends! With love,

Patients and Advanced Technology a Priority at DeFelice Dentistry

r. Louise DeFelice and her team at DeFelice Dentistry on Spokane’s north side intertwine conventional modern dentistry with more natural and biological concepts. The practice provides a different kind of approach to oral health and helps patients make safe, informed decisions in relation to their whole body. Dr. Louise DeFelice “Our holistic approach to dentistry is a comprehensive philosophy of care that considers oral health as an integrated part of the body,” explains DeFelice. “Overall health depends on good oral health. Our holistic model integrates traditional and alternative protocols to promote healing and wellness.” DeFelice Dentistry offers comprehensive dental services including a preventive cleaning and hygiene program, BPA free fillings and ceramic crowns, sleep apnea and snoring treatments, metal-free dental implants, clear aligner orthodontics, holistic dental extractions, cavity risk assessment screening, biocompatible/bioactive dental materials, whole food nutritional supplements, fluoride-free dental products, a mercury free/mercury safe environment, mercury detox referrals, ozone therapy, saliva testing, cosmetic smile revisions, and sedation for dental fears.   “One of our favorite pieces of technology is our E4D milling machine. This mill and software allows us to digitally design, fabricate, and permanently bond crowns and other restorations in a single visit,” says DeFelice.  “Traditionally, these restorations require multiple visits and temporaries, but same-day dental technology streamlines the process so patients can make fewer trips and have a more comfortable, convenient experience while they’re here.”   In addition, DeFelice Dentistry is one of on a few dental practices in the area offering low dose 3-D cone beam x-rays. “These x-rays produce an ultra-low dose of radiation, increasing safety for our patients and dental team,” emphasizes DeFelice. “We also offer digital x-rays which can reduce a patient’s exposure to radiation by up to 90 percent. Not only are they safer than traditional x-rays, they are also faster, more convenient and more accurate.”   For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit or call 509-850-0918. The Many Benefits of Working with a Nurse Practitioner

urse Practitioners of Idaho (NPI) is a nonprofit, independent membership group that is dedicated to the continuing education of nurse practitioners, as well as educating communities on the many benefits of choosing a nurse practitioner for their primary health care needs. “One of the main benefits of working with a nurse practitioner (NP) is the individualized care the patient receives,” says Michelle Anderson, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP, current vice president of NPI. “The patient knows that their specific needs and issues are being addressed with treatment and care options adjusted to their unique circumstances. They also have the opportunity to build a relationship with their NP that allows for a strong healthcare partnership.” Anderson goes on to explain that nurse practitioners are licensed, independent practitioners who practice in multiple settings as primary and/or specialty care providers and can diagnose, treat and manage acute episodic and chronic illnesses. “NPs are experts in health promotion and disease prevention,” she says. “They order, conduct, supervise and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests; prescribe pharmacological agents and non-pharmacologic therapies; and teach and counsel patients, among other services.” A nurse practitioner’s chief aim is to address the needs of the whole patient, taking time to focus not only on the diagnosis but also educating the patient on the diagnosis. “We partner with patients in their care, addressing all their healthcare needs, be it physical, social or psychological,” affirms Anderson. Move and Feel Better with Chiropractic Therapeutics in Coeur d’Alene

he team of functional chiropractors at Chiropractic Therapeutics, located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, consider themselves manual therapy specialists. This dedicated group, led by Dr. Logan Martin, as well as Dr. Sylvia Tripp and Dr. Ryan Hansen, considers each patient as a whole individual. “We utilize a variety of evidence-backed techniques geared toward getting you moving and feeling better,” assures Martin. Martin explains that this expert team of chiropractors understands that everyone comes into their office with unique past experiences—an accumulation of sport injuries, falls and/or car accidents—which can play a role in one’s overall health. “These

experiences can challenge a person’s functional health through many systems in the body—whether that is the fascial system, musculoskeletal system or nervous system, leading to possible dysfunction and pain. Understanding the body is a vast network of these integrated systems, we know each treatment is going to be different from individual to individual,” he says. “That’s why

• Integrated Holistic Approach Dentistry • Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment • Comprehensive Restorative Dentistry • Cosmetic Dentistry • Mercury Safe & Mercury Free • Biocompatible/Bio-ceramic Materials • Advanced Technology • Nutritional Supplements • Fluoride Free • Low Dose X-rays • Warm and Friendly Environment

we use a broad scope of therapies consisting of spinal and extremity joint manipulation, fascial manipulation, The Graston Technique, deep tissue laser therapy, kinesiotaping, and functional exercises, to achieve optimal functional health.” According to Martin, pain and dysfunction are very different and oftentimes the problem is not where the pain is. “This is why it’s vitally important to evaluate and treat the root cause and apply the appropriate tool for the job,” explains Martin. “We look forward to hearing from you and answering any questions you might have regarding your health.” To learn more about what therapies are a good fit for you, call 208-292-4873 or visit See ad, page 3.

mily Farish, Spokane-based Chinese herbal medicine practitioner and acupuncturist, specializes in an ancient form of Chinese pulse evaluation to help patients with a variety of health Emily Farish conditions. “Many of us are struggling to experience vitality and yet we don’t know where to turn for help,” she says. “Aging is a part of life and we can reclaim our health and thrive at any age. When you give yourself the gift of health, the world around you changes.” Farish was first introduced to the life-enhancing benefits of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine several years ago while living with chronic pain and relentless fatigue following a serious auto accident and a robbery at gun point a short time later. “I tried many different therapies that were helpful—but it wasn’t until trying Chinese herbal medicine that I was able to fully regain my strength and reclaim my health,” she explains. “Chinese medicine offered so many solutions for me to get out of pain and to move forward in my life. Not just physically from my auto accident, but emotionally.” Each herbal medicine formulation Farish prescribes is tailored to the individual patient and targets their specific needs. “We address the root causes rather than just symptoms,” she assures. “It is my life mission to help others regain their health with Chinese herbal medicine. Alternative Treatment for Chronic Sinusitis Sufferers submitted by Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy It’s cold and flu season, which is an especially difficult time for those who suffer from chronic sinusitis, congestion, allergies, runny nose and dry nose. Fortunately, there is an alternative treatment available that has been clinically proven more effective than oral antibiotics and nasal sprays and rinses—LoxaSperse in combination with the NasoNeb Sinus Therapy System. LoxaSperse is a stand-alone dispersion powder medication developed for nasal nebulization that contains special micronized ingredients to helps distribute the needed medication throughout the entire nasal and paranasal cavities. Particle size is critical to ensure that the intranasal drug delivery deposits in the nasal and paranasal cavities. If the particle size is too large, it won’t be captured in the paranasal cavity, meaning most of the medication washes out of the contra-lateral nostril and down the sink. The Many Benefits of Chazael Lotion by Amber McKenzie

love it when a product solves several problems all at once— and that’s exactly what Chazael Lotion does. This ‘miracle in a bottle’ is the creation of local physical therapist, Kevin Sgroi, who is also the owner of Joshua Tree Physical Therapy in Hayden, Idaho. When I first met Sgroi, he told me how Chazael was developed as a result of the excruciating side effects he experienced after aggressive chemotherapy treatments several years ago. After trying every pain lotion on the market and not getting the relief he sought, he came up with his own blend of all-natural ingredients and eventually created a formula that really worked. Sgroi named his formula Chazael, which translates to “God sees.” Because it worked so well for his own pain, he decided to try it on his patients. They started noticing a difference immediately with everything from muscle and joint pain to spasms and leg cramps as well as arthritis and inflammation. The demand grew for his lotion within and outside the clinic, so he started producing it for the general public. And we’re so happy he did!

I started utilizing the lotion almost two years ago, and I’m a huge fan but not for the reasons you might expect… Yes, I utilize it for my occasional aches and pains or when I have sore muscles after exercising (which I’m not going to lie—it’s been awhile) and I notice a difference immediately after application. I also use it on my daughters when they’re experiencing growing pains or achy muscles, and it helps them immensely as well. However, for me, the real miracle of Chazael is what it’s done for my face. That’s right, I apply the lotion as my daily face cream. I put it on every morning when I wake up, and every night before bed. My skin looks and feels amazing and I believe it’s healthier and more vibrant looking thanks to the amazing, all-natural ingredients in the lotion, including arginine, collagen, calcium and several powerful medicinal herbs and essential oils. Boom, problems solved! And you can’t beat the price at only $14.95 for a four-ounce bottle, and Sgroi now offers discounted bulk pricing. Mouth Matters A Holistic Approach to Oral Health T

by Ronica O’Hara

he mouth is the doorway to the body,” so the saying goes, and today we know just how true that is. Years ago, the biannual trip to the dentist was typically a simple “drill-andfill” operation, with other health concerns not given a second glance. Now, emerging research shows that when we neglect basic oral care—even that annoying task of nightly or post-meal flossing—we endanger our heart, lungs, kidneys and even our brains by allowing the buildup of pernicious bacteria in our gums. In April, University of Louisville School of Dentistry researchers reported that the bacteria P. gingivalis, which flourishes in gum disease, was found in brain samples of deceased Alzheimer’s patients— and that inflammation, swelling and bleeding in gums can transport the bacteria from the mouth into the bloodstream simply through chewing or teeth-brushing. The study also linked the bacteria to rheu14

matoid arthritis and aspiration pneumonia. Advanced gum disease also increases the risk of cancer by 24 percent, especially lung and colorectal cancers; quadruples the rate of kidney disease; and increases the risk of strokes, coronary artery disease, diabetes and pre-term births, other studies show. These findings have sobering implications for the nearly half of the American adults over age 30 and 70 percent of adults 65 and older with gum disease. “Science has proven that a healthy mouth is a healthy body,” says San Francisco holistic dentist Nammy Patel, author of Age With Style: Your Guide to a Youthful Smile & Healthy Living.

Body, Mind, Teeth

It’s part of the reason for the fresh interest in holistic dentistry, sometimes called biologic dentistry. “We look at the entire body, not just the mouth,” says Bernice Teplitsky, DDS, of Wrigleyville Dental, in Chicago, and president of the Holistic Dental As-

sociation (HDA), based in Coral Gables, Florida. Holistic dentists abstain from toxic materials, remove amalgam fillings, may be wary of root canals and focus on minimally invasive procedures—some of which may be high-tech and cutting-edge, such as lasers to clean teeth and gums, ozone therapy to slow the growth of infections and air abrasion to “sandblast” away small areas of tooth decay. Holistic dentists work closely with a wide range of other complementary practitioners. “We look at the underlying causes for gum disease and cavities: Is it your diet, or hormonal changes or acid reflux?” Patel explains. That may mean prescribing a head massage, acupuncture session, meditation lessons or dietary counseling. They may run blood tests for biocompatibility of materials and incorporate approaches from Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, herbology, homeopathy, iridology, craniosacral therapy and energy medicine. They will look for signs of sleep apnea and often treat it. However, with the added tests and consultations, they tend to be more expensive, with many procedures not covered by dental insurance. Their numbers are small: Only 391 of 199,000 American dentists belong to the HDA, or about one in 500. Yet the natural health movement that drives holistic dentistry is having an effect on the profession at large. Many dentists nationwide, pressured by patients and aided by new technology, are abandoning toxic and invasive options for less harmful methods. Controversial mercury amalgam fillings are being edged out by less toxic options like resin composites that match teeth color; the amount of mercury sold in the U.S. for dental amalgams fell by half between 2001 and 2013. Conventional dental X-rays, which in a Yale study published in the American Cancer Association journal Cancer were linked to non-cancerous brain tumors, are yielding to computerized digital X-rays with a fifth of the radiation: As many as two out of three dentists have switched over. And aided by computer imaging software and 3-D printers, dentists are fabricating new crowns, implants, bridges and dentures right in the office, instead of using what Austin,

Texas, dentist David Frank calls “intrusive analog [gooey impressions] that left patients feeling claustrophobic, highly anxious and consistently worried about gagging.”

Dialogue With Dentists When visiting a dentist, whether holistic or not, it’s wise to be prepared with a natural health mindset. Some questions to ask are:

What are you filling the cavity with? Just say no to amalgam, a mixture

of heavy metals, of which about half is elemental mercury that slowly releases toxic vapors. Plus, “Heavy metals can leak into the enamel tubes of the teeth causing the teeth to appear gray or dark blue and making them brittle over time,” warns Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Rhonda Kalasho. Instead, ask for relatively nontoxic options such as porcelain or composite resins, which can be made of materials such as silica, ceramic, plastics and zirconium oxide. Some composite resins contain the endocrine disrupters Bis-GMA or BPA; for extra protection, ask for one that doesn’t, or ask the dentist to use a rubber dam to prevent swallowing it.

Should I have my amalgam fillings removed? Holistic dentists like Patel

give a strong yes. “The problem arises with mercury when you chew or brush your teeth. The abrasion creates heat and causes the mercury to off-gas. Those vapors get swallowed and go into your body, where they’re stored—and that creates significant health hazards—because we’re talking about a known poison,” she says. Other dentists disagree about removal, citing its risks: Holistic pioneer Dr. Andrew Weil, for example, writes that removing amalgam fillings is often unnecessary, costly and stressful, and recommends exchanging them for composite resin only when they break down.

Do I really need antibiotics? Oregon State University researchers found in a study this year of 90,000 patients that the antibiotics often prescribed by dentists as prevention against infection are unnecessary 81 percent of the time, and contribute to antibiotic resistance. Typically, patients

We look at the underlying causes for gum disease and cavities: Is it your diet, or hormonal changes or acid reflux? ~Nammy Patel didn’t have the precise cardiac conditions that warranted the extra caution.

Is a root canal the best option?

Some holistic dentists counsel against root canals, citing the risk of long-term health problems caused by lingering bacteria, and advocate the use of herbs, laser therapy or extractions instead. “If root canals were done 20 to 30 years ago, it is definitely a problem, because there were not enough technological advances to clean out all the bacteria which could cause chronic health complications,” says Patel. “Nowadays, depending on the tooth root, canals can be 99.9 percent cleaned by lasers.”

Back to the Basics Considering the stakes, preventive care is all-important and there are many natural options to guarantee robust oral health. At the natural health store or drugstore, consider the following options:

Toothbrush: Electric toothbrushes reduced plaque 21 percent more and gingivitis 11 percent more after three months compared to manual toothbrushes, reported a review of 56 studies involving 5,068 participants. Those that rotate rather than brush back-and-forth clean slightly better. Toothpaste: Study the labels and be wary of the following ingredients: fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan and sodium hydroxide. These ingredients are a plus: baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), green tea, Eucalyptol, menthol, tea tree oil and vitamin D. Flossing: Some smooth, slippery flosses

are coated with toxic, Teflon-like perfluorinated polymers linked to kidney and testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis and hor-

monal disruptions. A recent study found higher levels in women using those flosses. Instead, use the old-fashioned nylon kind or try out new flosses made of biodegradable silk or bamboo or those infused with antimicrobial tea tree oil. Or, consider a water flosser, which Canadian researchers found were 29 percent more effective at plaque removal than string floss.

Mouthwash: Mouthwashes containing alcohol significantly raise the risk of throat cancer, Australian researchers found. Instead, opt for super-healthy green tea as a mouthwash, as well as a drink. Studies show that it protects teeth from erosion and promotes healthy gums. Another simple option is warm salt water, using one cup of water and one-half teaspoon of salt. A 2017 study by the Cochrane medical study organization found it is virtually as effective as the prescription antiseptic mouthwash chlorhexidine in reducing dental plaque and microbes. Pulling: An ancient Ayurvedic remedy, this involves swishing a spoonful of organic coconut oil around the mouth and through the teeth for 10 to 20 minutes. The oil’s lauric acid, a natural antibacterial, has been found in studies to reduce plaque formation and fungal infections, as well as the strains of bacteria linked to bad breath and irritated gums. Taking care of our teeth and gums is simply worth the daily time and trouble to facilitate long-term health. “Your oral care should be taken just as seriously as watching your diet,” advises Kalasho. Holistic Dentistry by Louise DeFelice

ith more folks seeking natural or holistic alternatives when it comes to their food, household products and healthcare, it’s no wonder the dental industry is following suit. Keep reading to find out what it means to take a holistic approach to dentistry and why choosing a holistic dentist will help you keep your teeth longer and achieve the beautiful, healthy smile you deserve.

Bug free zone: A holistic approach to dentistry, or integrative dentistry, sees the mouth as an integrated part of the body and considers oral health problems as they relate to total body health. The mouth does not exist in a vacuum. Getting holes in your teeth (cavities) is not normal. The mouth is a microenvironment that mimics the health of your total body. Did you know that plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth can be an indicator of and increase your risk for plaque and tartar buildup in your arteries? The same bacteria associated with gum disease has been found in the hearts of patients with heart disease, in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s, and in cancer cells of patients with pancreatic cancer. A holistic dentist focuses on balancing the bacteria in their patients

mouth to improve not only their teeth and gums but their overall health as well.

No black teeth: Holistic dentistry goes much deeper than just cleaning and fixing teeth; each patient’s entire well-being is taken into consideration. As part of a holistic philosophy, holistic dentists provide safe mercury amalgam removal technique (SMART) and use biocompatible materials to restore your bite and smile. The Minamata Convention Treaty designed to protect human health and the environment now has 28 countries which have pledged to phase out the use of dental amalgams and ban the use of dental amalgams in women, nursing and pregnant women, and children.

Fluoride-free: Holistic dentists don’t advocate the indiscriminate use of fluoride as it is a known neurotoxin. Instead, they opt for products and treatments to make their patient’s teeth stronger using alternatives to fluoride. Dental cavities, also known as dental caries, is the second most prevalent disease in the world, coming in only slightly behind the common cold. Topical ozone therapy can provide many more benefits than fluoride without any harmful effects.

High tech: Choosing a holistic dentist does not mean sacrificing high tech treatments. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Holistic dentistry is focused on modern, minimally-invasive technologies and treatments. State-of-the-art options include: • Advanced 3D low dose digital x-rays • Laser treatments to treat gum disease • High tech ceramic dental implants • Same day crown technology • Impression scanning

Snore no more: Many of the signs of snoring, sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing can be noticed during a routine dental exam and cleaning. Inadequate sleep can lead to weight gain, memory loss, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks, impaired alertness and sudden death. A holistically oriented sleep-trained dentist can manufacture a comfortable and cost-effective mouthpiece to keep the airway clear and allow proper breathing throughout the night. Spinal Solutions Chiropractic Care Yields Unexpected Results by Marlaina Donato

hiropractors are often perceived as back pain specialists, but optimal chiropractic care treats the whole person from the inside-out, starting with the nervous system. This means practitioners can address many conditions that transcend typical expectations.

The human spinal column sports 31 pairs of nerves, some corresponding directly to digestive, reproductive and respiratory organs, which might explain why regular spinal adjustments and other chiropractic techniques can be helpful for seemingly unrelated conditions like

asthma, chronic headaches, hormonal imbalances and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. A scientific review of 179 published papers focusing on various non-musculoskeletal conditions shows benefits of fullbody chiropractic treatment for asthma, infantile colic and cervical vertigo. Results are also promising for middle ear infections in children and pneumonia in seniors. Clinical evidence suggests the nervous system is a cohesive factor in achieving overall wellness. “In chiropractic and holistic philosophy, the body is considered a self-healing organism,” explains chiropractic physician and applied kinesiologist Marc Terebelo, of the Chiropractic Wellness Center, in Southfield, Michigan. “The nervous system controls the body, so issues in the toes or fingers may be caused by spinal issues in the neck and low back. Likewise, bladder and menstrual cycle problems can be caused by injury to the low back or pelvic regions.” William J. Lauretti, a New York Chiropractic College professor in Seneca Falls, concurs with the benefits of holistic treatment. “Chiropractors view the body as an integrated unit, and problems in one area might affect a seemingly unrelated area,” he says. “Most chiropractors have a wide variety of treatment approaches to offer, including advice on nutrition, lifestyle, stress management and exercise.”

Chiropractic and Digestion

It’s worth noting that the nerves that innervate important digestive anatomy—from the salivary glands to the stomach down through the intestinal tract—branch off the spinal cord at various levels of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. “This means that chiropractic adjustments given to [the] neck, midback, lower back and sacrum are important to optimal digestive function,” says chiropractor Sean Cailteux, of Exodus Health, in Shawnee, Kansas. In his practice, Lauretti has observed better digestion as a positive side effect to regular adjustments. “I’ve had a few patients over the years who reported improvement in digestive problems after chiropractic treatment of the mid- and low back. In some of those cases, the improvement was serendipitous, because the patient didn’t discuss their digestive symptoms initially, only after they noticed the improvement.”

Hope for Headaches and TMJ Dysfunction

Chronic tension headaches and migraines can become the norm for too many individuals, but chiropractic care—including spinal adjustments, nutrition advice and addressing emotional causes such as stress and anxiety—can be key in reducing pain and getting to the root of the problem. “Technically, only headaches with a list of very particular characteristics can be properly diagnosed as migraines,” Lauretti explains. “The cause of many cases of chronic, longterm headaches is often from poor function of the muscles and joints in the neck.” These types of he adaches often respond well to treatment focused on restoring normal function to the neck, he says. TMJ disorders can cause painful and sometimes debilitating symptoms, including facial and tooth pain and locking of the jaw. Chiropractic treatments often provide reliable relief. “The TMJ is a very important joint in the body, with thousands of neuroreceptors. TMJ involvements can cause headaches, particularly around the ear or side of the head, vertigo, tinnitus and other hearing issues,” says Terebelo. Cailteux notes that aside from experiencing jaw pain and headaches, someone suffering from TMJ disorder may have difficulty chewing, and may experience an audible clicking of the jaw with movement. “Chiropractic adjustments can be particularly helpful, especially when delivered to the TM joint and the neck. Gentle, soft-tissue manipulation of the muscles and tendons of the jaw, specifically the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles, is also a highly effective treatment.” For a true holistic approach and lasting success, Lauretti offers this advice: “Look for a doctor who is willing to work as part of your healthcare team and who’s willing to refer you for specialty care when appropriate.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books, including Multidimensional Aromatherapy. The Metaphysical Side of Chiropractic by Patrick Dougherty

hiropractic care seeks to restore the body’s innate healing wisdom derived from Universal Intelligence. The practice evolved from metaphysical and philosophical concepts developed primarily by the founders of chiropractic, DD and BJ Palmer. Below are some of the most important concepts of this effective modality.

Metaphysical Concepts. Universal and Innate Intelligences are important chiropractic concepts. Humans are energetic particles existing in an infinite field of energy— Universal Intelligence. Innate Intelligence is Universal Intelligence manifested within us. When we are open to Universal Intelligence we can always access Innate Intelligence. Freely flowing Innate promotes emotional, chemical and physical well-being. It allows the nervous system to constructively adapt to stressful challenges and reflect the pure love of Universal Intelligence. Humans often create polarities that stray from Universal Intelligence. Our programmed “reality” opposes the “actuality” of this intelligence, restricting us to lower frequencies of light. We shrink and feel pulled down, as if by gravity sucking the healthy vibrations of actuality out of us. Then we believe there is more loss than gain, negative than positive, pain than pleasure; in ourselves and others. A

mind moving toward divinity attunes to ever-greater levels of actuality increasing the vibration of our reality. Our physiology can normalize, and we become healthier in body, mind and spirit.

With a vertebral subluxation, a spinal segment loses dynamic oscillatory vibration or oscillates too fast. Communication to the nervous system is diminished. Vibrational changes can harm organs, glands, cells and all other structures in the body. As a light-receiving and broadcasting system, the quality of light we generate affects everything via our nervous system. Subluxation impedes optimal energetic vibratory state. A chiropractic adjustment can be a solution to that impaired state.

Vibration. The physics of chaos and entropy dictate constant transformation of vibratory energy. Signs and symptoms signal a dissipated vibration within that

attempts to bring awareness to a person’s incongruities. We keep breaking down until we gain awareness and humble ourselves to higher vibrations of the universe. Mastery replaces the vibration of illusion of gain and loss with vibrations of pure love, gratitude, compassion and forgiveness. Time spent in higher vibrations of Universal Intelligence advances health. The more we tune in, the more we receive.

Tone. Tone is the product of vibrational frequency existing in everything. As Universal Intelligence produces Innate Intelligence, subluxation produces vibratory tone dissonance. Dissonant tones create friction with the resonant frequency of the Universe, and its inhabitants. Our tone helps decide whether a wave becomes destructive or flows rhythmically in the ocean of Universal Intelligence. The ability of Innate Intelligence to express itself fully can be compromised by the reality we create. Genius is the ability to humble ourselves and be open to a Universal Intelligence we cannot measure, see or understand completely. When a chiropractic subluxation is corrected with an adjustment, the door is opened to restore the body’s innate healing wisdom and its link to Universal Intelligence. The Mental Health Benefits Associated with

Chiropractic Care by Scott Brown and Candace Smart

ost people associate chiropractic with fixing the aches and pains of daily life or with treatment for an accident or injury. But what if the main cause of your pain isn’t physical but mental? According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. In the United States, 40 million adults suffer from an anxiety disorder. It is common for those that suffer from depression to also have anxiety and vice versa. Medication is the most common treatment for mental health disorders, though many choose to take a more natural route by utilizing mental health counseling or using a combination of both. Nutrition, yoga and massage are occasionally utilized with success in treating mental health disorders. However, what many people don’t realize is that chiropractic care benefits emotional healing as well.

How Chiropractic Care Improves Mental Health

Our moods are regulated by our body’s chemistry. The chemistry in your organs, as well as your brain, are all regulated by the nervous system. Misalignment of the

spine—specifically the first, second or third vertebrae—can cause pressure in the area of the brain stem which creates interference neurologically and chemically. Keeping the spine in proper alignment has shown to have a significant impact on mood and overall well-being. According to the American Psychological Association, “chronic stress—stress that interferes with your ability to function normally over an extended period—is becoming a public health crisis.” The longterm effects of stress can result in a myriad of mental health complications. Chiropractors work primarily with the spine—the root of the nervous system through which nerve impulses travel between the brain and the rest of the body— and can help the body manage and process stress in a healthier way. Chiropractic adjustments can reduce spinal nerve irritation and improve blood circulation, which can

help signal the brain to turn off the “fight or flight” response and begin the healing process. This in turn helps to decrease perceived stress and reduce depression, anxiety and the many other health issues. Another way that chiropractic improves mental health is by decreasing any physical pain that may be clouding the mind. As anyone with chronic pain can attest, constant discomfort can have a serious impact on mood and mental health. Studies have proven that depression occurs at a rate of three to four times higher in those with chronic pain when compared to their healthier peers. The cycle of chronic pain and depression can continue indefinitely. Chiropractic can break this cycle. As the spine becomes aligned and pain decreases, anxiety and depression sprouting from pain also decrease. Therefore, while many may not immediately link the two, chiropractic does affect mental health. Regular chiropractic adjustments have been proven to increase both physical and mental well-being, especially when utilized as a part of a holistic approach to wellness. Scott Brown, DC is a chiropractor in Mount Vernon, Washington. Candace Smart, MA, NCC, LMHC, CNC, is a mental health counselor and founder of Smart Therapy, located at 9708 N. Nevada St., Ste. 205, in Spokane. Smart Therapy offers mental health counseling, chiropractic care, nutrition guidance and massage therapy. Call 509-466-0226 or visit for more details.
