What drew you to this profession? When I was 15 years old, I worked for Dr. Carl Gruning, a behavioral optometrist in Fairfield. I was amazed at how much better the patients got after doing vision therapy. The children were more focused and better behaved, and the adults were happier. As a behavioral optometrist, I understand that, “how you see is how you be,” and vision can be changed for the better. How does your work differ from others in your profession? As an integrative optometrist, I am looking at how the visual system functions. I look at how vision is connected to physical, emotional and mental health and overall wellness. Treatment based on the whole person includes prescribing optimal glasses, as well as giving lifestyle modifications and visual wellness suggestions. What should someone expect from working with you? Patients should expect a careful assessment of symptoms, visual demands, health and wellness, visual function and prescription needs. We also give recommendations for optimizing vision and quality of life. What is most important for Natural Awakenings’ readers to know? We place high emphasis on education and offer internships for optometry students from around the country and plan on adding another SUNY Optometry resident. We are happy to speak to groups about vision and are actively seeking individuals who want to join our team. See ad, page 11.

What drew you to this profession? I watched my parents and grandparents use alternative medicine at home at a very early age. I saw my mother struggle with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. I noticed the many unmet needs in conventional treatments. This instilled in me a desire and hope for a better way to provide care. How does your work differ from others in your profession? I use various natural treatment modalities with the goal of getting to the underlying cause of disease by partnering and empowering others in their healthcare journey to “get back to self.” My goal is to restore the body back into balance for optimal wellness and meet you where you are at. I use pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplementation and herbal medicine, constitutional and miasmatic homeopathy, low dose immunotherapy (LDI) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). What should someone expect from working with you? You should expect a comprehensive approach, including a thorough intake and medical history. I listen to see the patterns in your illness and use the most minimally invasive techniques. Most importantly, I really listen! What changes do you plan in 2019? I plan to conduct regular monthly workshops on topics like Lyme disease, childhood development disorders and autoimmune conditions. I am also looking to partner with the community on various healthcare initiatives and collaborations. What is most important for Natural Awakenings’ readers to know? I’m here to support your journey and have over 11 years of experience working with patients. I am a compassionate provider, a good listener and use a unique approach for each patient I work with. I believe we all can overcome our health obstacles with the right supports. I’m also very committed to the naturopathic profession; I currently serve as the President of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP). Natural Living Directory 2019
