The Tolkowsky Ideal Cut diamond changed the world in 1919 when Marcel Tolkowsky discovered how to maximize the brilliance of a diamond’s cut. Since then, Tolkowsky diamonds have been celebrated worldwide for their perfect brilliance. All Tolkowsky diamonds are born of Marcel’s unique passion, recognising the perfection and craftsmanship required to cut the world’s most perfectly cut diamonds.

MARCEL TOLKOWSKY’S ORIGINAL 1919 DESIGN FOR THE IDEAL CUT ROUND DIAMOND

T H E M AT H E M AT I C S O F L O V E The Tolkowsky heritage is legendary. For seven generations the Tolkowsky family has been driven by a passion to reveal unprecedented depths of fire and brilliance in diamonds. This ceaseless labour of love is reflected in the myriad brilliance of each and every Tolkowsky diamond. Our unique heritage is reborn in a new collection that marries exquisite jewellery design with the famed perfection of Tolkowsky diamonds. The following pages present diamonds at their most brilliant, revealed by Tolkowsky craftsmanship. From inventing the Ideal Cut, to cutting the world’s largest diamond, the Tolkowsky name has been associated for generations with crafting the world’s finest diamonds.

O N LY O N E N A M E M A D E T H E C U T The great Tolkowsky dynasty was born in the early 1800’s when young jeweller Abraham Tolkowsky found favour with the nobility for his exquisite work with precious stones. Abraham and his family of three sons moved from Eastern Europe to Antwerp, and the seeds were sown to create an unbroken family tradition, which was to revolutionise the art of diamond cutting. Born 1898, Marcel Tolkowsky went on to combine his inherited skills with scholarly excellence in mathematics and physics. In 1919, Marcel unveiled his thesis on the proportions for the Ideal Cut round diamond, which was to set a new world standard. To this day the Tolkowsky name remains synonymous with unsurpassed excellence, as the creators of the Ideal Cut diamond.

1800s Abraham Tolkowsky begins the story as the founding father of the great Tolkowsky diamond dynasty in Byalistock, Poland.

Maurice Tolkowsky, Abraham’s son, becomes the first Tolkowsky to move to Antwerp, Europe’s flourishing diamond centre. His craftsmanship quickly attracts wide admiration and acclaim.

The Tolkowsky family continues to flow in to Antwerp, and Maurice’s brothers Isadore and Sam join the burgeoning business. Sam also becomes the first ever Chairman of the Antwerp Diamond Exchange.

Marcel, a gifted mathematician and physicist, creates the perfect proportions of the Ideal Cut diamond. They reveal the perfect fire and brilliance previously hidden away in the heart of the stone. This cut remains the world industry standard to this day.

Gabi Tolkowsky, Abraham’s great grandson, enters the industry as a diamond cutter. Today he is recognised as the world’s foremost Master Cutter.

1980s Gabi Tolkowsky designs, cuts and polishes the Centenary Diamond and Golden Jubilee, the largest polished diamonds in the world.

A TA L E O F T R U E L O V E S I N C E 1 9 1 9 Of the Four C’s it is only cut which can be influenced by man. As the principle way in which brilliance is unlocked - only Tolkowsky’s dedicated craftsmen can truly reveal the brilliance which lies within every stone. Using the principles that Marcel Tolkowsky established in 1919 as their guide - every Tolkowsky diamond is lovingly crafted until it reaches the highest cut grades possible and is worthy of carrying the Tolkowsky name. CUT Cut is most important in evaluating diamond quality and is the only factor influenced by man. This refers to the arrangement of facets cut into the stone and gives the diamond its brilliance and radiance through the reflection of light between the facets. Tolkowsky Ideal Cut diamonds have 57 facets of perfectly identical proportions respecting the parameters established by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. CLARITY Inclusions that occur naturally within a diamond determine its clarity, which is assessed when viewed under 10-power magnification. Diamonds with no or few inclusions are the most valuable. Tolkowsky diamonds are graded from flawless (F) to slightly included (SI), where any inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. COLOUR The colour of a diamond is graded from D to Z and relates to the degree to which the diamond is colourless. D represents the most rare and colourless diamond, while Z corresponds to stones with slight yellow colour. Tolkowsky diamonds are only available in colourless and near colourless grades. CARAT Carat measures the weight of the diamond, with one carat consisting of 100 points. Tolkowsky diamonds are available from 20 points to over 1 carat.

LOVE HAS MANY FACETS, 57 TO BE PRECISE In addition to featuring Marcel Tolkowsky’s Ideal Cut, Tolkowsky diamonds feature the highest possible cut grading from independent laboratories. Look for the certification of Excellent Cut, Excellent Polish & Excellent Symmetry. These represent the highest possible independent assessment of cutting excellence. HEARTS & ARROWS Capturing the perfection of the cut, the Hearts & Arrows optical effect represents the reflection of light inside a diamond of perfect symmetry and proportions. All Tolkowsky diamonds proudly display 8 Hearts and 8 Arrows associated with the Ideal Cut, guaranteeing maximum diamond brilliance. CERTIFICATION All Tolkowsky diamond jewellery comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, certifying that the stone has been cut and polished to the highest standards of quality defined by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. Tolkowsky certification is accompanied by a Diamond Grading Report and appropriate Gemmological Certification. BEST PRACTICE PRINCIPLES Tolkowsky exceeds Best Practice Principles in implementing professional, environmental and ethical standards necessary to ensure consumer confidence in both our natural diamonds and their origin. We guarantee that all of our stones have not been treated, do not contain simulants, and are not synthetic. Tolkowsky diamonds are ethically sourced and do not result in non-ethical practices, such as provenance from areas involved in conflict or human suffering, harming the health and welfare of individuals or use of child labour. Our facilities are ISO9001:2000 certified, corresponding to the highest level of social accountability and working practices. For more information, please visit our website. All diamond weights in this brochure are quoted as ‘total carat weight’. This is the minimum total carat weight and individual pieces may feature a slightly higher total carat weight.
