HONORING JASON NHF recently named Garrett Hayes the first-ever recipient of our Jason Fulton Memorial Leadership Fund award. This fund honors the memory of Jason Fulton, a hemophilia patient who tragically passed of AIDS at the young age of 24.

The fund is used to support internship opportunities with NHF for current and former members of the National Youth Leadership Institute (NYLI). Its purpose is to empower young leaders who demonstrate qualities like Jason: determination, passion, and work ethic, especially in support of the blood and bleeding disorders community. Through this fund, Jason's vibrant leadership lives on.

Each fund recipient will carry a bit of Jason with them forever.

When Jason was a teenager, he learned that the blood products he'd used to treat his hemophilia had also infected him with HIV. Despite this new diagnosis, he continued to dive headfirst into his advocacy and studies-focused on hematology and pharmacy--and live his life to the best of his ability.

Reunited

On 10/16, hundreds of people from across the U.S. tuned in to this year's Red Tie Soiree: REUNITED, presented

by Sanofi Genzyme.

Together with the support of the community, NHF raised over $200,000 to fund transformative plans for people affected by inheritable blood disorders-including an ambitious, patient-centered research agenda that will shape the next decade of work.

The evening featured voices from the community and special appearances by actress Alex Borstein and recording artist Trevor Martin. And guests got a glimpse of watch parties happening everywhere thanks to video and photo submissions.

NHF is grateful to the community for helping us surpass our goal and looks forward to all that we will continue to accomplish together.

AMERITAS MAKES AN

Ameritas announced a $20,000 grant to NHF on behalf of 2021 Rosen Award recipient, Jim Christensen, Jr., president of inSOURCE, Inc. The grant will help support NHF's work to cure inheritable blood disorders and address and prevent the complications of these disorders through research, education, and advocacy.

The prestigious Lester A. Rosen Humanitarian and Achievement Award is given annually by Ameritas to one of the company's independent financial representatives. The recipient is someone who has achieved great professional success while maintaining a high level of commitment to community service. The Rosen Award was created in 1996 to honor Rosen's lifetime of service to the insurance industry, to Ameritas, and to his community of Memphis, TN. A resident of Omaha, Jim selected NHF to receive his Rosen Award grant. He was born with hemophilia A and spent his childhood in a wheelchair or on crutches. His involvement with NHF began over 30 years ago with the local chapter of NHF in Nebraska.

About four years ago, Jim decided to make an impact at the national level by forming inSOURCERx, a philanthropically driven prescription drug discount program. When consumers fill a prescription with the inSOURCERx card, medication discounts are provided, and a portion of proceeds goes directly to foundations and nonprofits to support worthy causes.

"Jim exemplifies what is so special about the inheritable blood disorders community," said Dr. Valentino. "His boundless compassion for others has led him to a career with Ameritas that helps others, and a passion for raising awareness and providing education around hemophilia and similar chronic diseases. This honor shows how Jim has successfully combined his career and passion and has ultimately made a positive difference in the lives of countless families."

OFF TO THE RACES

NHF Runners Take

on the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon On 11/7, eight runners will hit the streets of NYC. Learn about two participants below!

Despite 2020 being a difficult year, my brother has overcome several hardships after getting a total left knee arthroplasty + undergoing grueling physical therapy. I'm running this marathon to celebrate his victories (that he can walk better, bend his knee, + no longer is feeling arthritic pains in his knee) by raising funds for NHF and awareness of bleeding disorders in my community. I look forward to meeting the Red Tie Runners team + running to represent our bleeding disorders family in the 50th annual NYC Marathon!

When I was in 8th grade, my dad introduced me to long-distance running. At the end of that first three-mile run, he said "You know, if you like this sport, it's something you can do the rest of your life." And I haven't missed a day of running in the past 34 years of life.

That drive has helped me run 46 marathons.

This focus on my personal health makes me keenly aware of the profound importance + impact of the work we do every day at Pfizer in the Rare Disease Business Unit. I have the great privilege of running to support those who can't run today and provide hope to many wishing to run tomorrow.
