The incorporation of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) with Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative’s distribution system is now underway and on schedule. We began the installation of the substation equipment in June and started changing out meters the first of September. The AMI is a system that allows information to be transferred from the meter at our customer’s location to the mapping and billing computers in our office. The AMI system will perform a number of functions that have never been available. First and foremost, we will no longer be driving to your home or business to read your meter on a monthly basis. It will allow us to read every meter on our system without actually going to the location of the meter. It will eliminate any missed readings because we will read every single meter on the system every day. This does not mean that we will never need to be at your location again. We still need access to your location because it will be necessary for us to do routine inspections of our facilities. This is primarily to insure there are no safety issues or maintenance required at the location. In addition, this system will let us know if a meter has been tampered with or if power has blinked at a particular location in the previous 24 hours. Also, following major storms or other emergency The Advanced Metering Infrastructure situations, a system test can be will be installed by a contracting run with the AMI.
