WELCOME
Welcome to our Programme for March and April 2023.
Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. As we emerge from the darkness of winter our senses are more alive to the world around us and our spirits are rejuvenated. At the National Concert Hall our March/ April programme provides a broad range of performances to soundtrack this auspicious time, including events inspired by the season itself, such as Degani Trio’s Voices of Spring on March 3 and Seán Hession’s Seasons of Sinatra: Spring on April 14.
Our International Concert Series returns with a performance by acclaimed British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason on March 14 whose programme features favourites by J.S. Bach, Britten and Cassadó. The following month sees revered pianist Paul Lewis take to the NCH stage on April 24 as part of his two-year Schubert Piano Sonata Series which will see him perform works from the composer’s later life at venues around the globe.
The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) season continues with visits by
world-renowned artists such as Leonard Slatkin on March 3 and 10, Gemma New on March 24 and Ruth Reinhardt on April 28. On St. Patrick’s Day the Orchestra perform a special tribute to the legendary Shaun Davey under conductor David Brophy and Good Friday sees their lauded interpretation of Bach: St. John Passion.
The St. Patrick’s Day weekend also sees the welcome return of Christy Moore on Saturday 18 (this is the first of three Saturday nights with Christy who also performs on March 25 and April 1) and the Kilfenora Céilí band on Sunday March 19.
Our programme also includes a very special visit by David Gray and his Skellig Choir on March 4 and 5 to showcase songs from his 12th studio record inspired by Skellig Michael, an album launch show by Martin Hayes and the Common Ground Ensemble for their debut Peggy’s Dream on March 26, a much-anticipated concert by Aldous Harding on April 18 and the return of New York’s greatest wit Fran Lebowitz on April 15.
Additional events at this time include several exciting shows by The RTÉ Concert Orchestra who bring us Movies and Musicals on March 9, Thin Lizzy Symphonic on March 29 and the ever-popular Marty in the Evening on April 27. In addition, Fiachra Garvey’s Chamber Series The Natural World continues with recitals including Fiona Kelly and Jean Kelly on March 12 and Yurodny Ensemble on April 16.
Our Learning and Participation programme continues with Primary Ensemble Performance Day on March 28 and new terms for Mini Music, Percussion Lab, Gamelan Ensemble and the Sing Out! Choir.
We hope you enjoy all the events you attend during March and April and look forward to welcoming you back to many more wonderful concerts in 2023.

MARTIN HAYES & THE COMMON GROUND ENSEMBLE
Martin Hayes & The Common Ground Ensemble return to the National Concert Hall on Sunday 26 March for a special performance to mark the release of their debut album Peggy’s Dream. Here Martin talks about band dynamics, the evolution of the new record and what The Common Ground Ensemble means to him.
The Common Ground Ensemble have been playing together since 2020. How has the band evolved in that time?
In March of 2020 the band was little more than some unfinished musical ideas along with some rough recordings from a few days of rehearsal the month previous. With a reasonably clear idea of what we wanted to do we arrived for two days of rehearsal at the NCH on 12 March 2020 in preparation for our first concert on the 14th. We barely had our instruments out of our cases, when the Taoiseach went on television to announce the lockdown that morning. I’d been working on the music and arrangements for the band for a few months, so I was naturally very disappointed as were all the band members. Since we were all already gathered together, we decided to make some use of the free time that
was suddenly now on our hands. Our management booked us into Grouse Lodge where we spent the next few days recording and shaping the musical ideas that have gone on to become the basis for our latest recording.
What was the first song you completed for the album and how did it come together?
The tunes are all traditional tunes but we’ve added a lot of very original arrangements, composition and improvisation, all of which is woven together with the tunes. I was picking melodies and crafting very rough arrangements in the months leading
“One of my guiding principles and aspirations in forming collaborations is that my collaborators be able to find real freedom and become their maximum musical selves in the musical environment I create.”
up to March 2020. I feel like I was simultaneously playing around with many of the tunes so there doesn’t seem to be one specific piece that I could identify as the first one.
Tell us about the creative process in general. Do different people bring ideas and the group works out the song or how does it evolve?
It starts with me picking tunes that I like, recording them with my fiddle on my computer and then playing around with a midi keyboard making very rough sketches of arrangement ideas that I
thought may have potential. I had very rough outlines of parts that I then shared with the other musicians. My idea was to point us in a particular direction but not to lock these arrangements solidly into place. I really just want to provide a general direction for each piece and at the same time create opportunities for these amazing musicians to deploy their own unique talents within this larger architecture. One of my guiding principles and aspirations in forming collaborations is that my collaborators be able to find real freedom and become their maximum musical selves in the musical environment I create.
How have the songs changed since you started playing them live? Have any undergone radical changes born from live performances?
Now that we’ve had the opportunity to perform and go back into the studio to do a proper recording, I feel like all the pieces have settled, all the players have found their place in the mix and the arrangements have been gradually refined to the point where the band now has a definite sound.
Where was the album recorded and what was the process like?
The album was recorded at Grouse Lodge studio in Westmeath. It felt like a reunion after having initially spent those first few days of the pandemic huddled together in that same studio. The whole recording process was a joy and we were also enjoying getting a second bite of the cherry. It really is a great thrill and pleasure to surround yourself with extremely talented musicians. There is a quote that says “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” I think I was in the right room.
What does the Common Ground Ensemble give you that none of your other creative outlets provides?
I’m always looking for new possibilities and musical freedom and this ensemble provides this in buckets. For me each performance and every new collaboration is just another opportunity to get to get to the next level or maybe the next depth, I always want to go deeper with the music.
You regularly perform in the National Concert Hall. What does the venue mean to you?
Well it is the NATIONAL Concert Hall! And therefore has a cultural significance, it has a national remit that makes me take the space very seriously. Anytime I walk on that stage, I do so with both a sense of respect and gratitude, I never take it for granted. On the other hand, it also feels like home, it’s a stage I always look forward to returning to, I just love the acoustics and the audiences.
Are you listening to any new Irish music you would recommend?
There are lots of fine young traditional musicians playing at a very high level such as Sorcha Costello, Saileg Ní Cheannabháin, Daithi Gormley, Cormac Begley and many more.
What does the rest of 2023 hold for you?
I’m looking forward to the release of our new recording and seeing where that takes us.

SHEKU KANNEHMASON
Award-winning cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason makes his National Concert Hall debut on Tuesday 14 March at 8pm. For what will hopefully be the first of many visits to the NCH Sheku will perform a special programme featuring favourites by J.S. Bach, Britten and Cassadó.
Here are ten things to know about the rising star
1. Sheku began learning the cello at the age of six with Sarah Huson-Whyte and then studied with Ben Davies and Hannah Roberts at the Royal Academy of Music. A proud graduate, he has recently been appointed the first Menuhin Visiting Professor of Performance Mentoring at the Academy.
2. Sheku’s family - The Kanneh-Masons - comprises seven brothers and sisters all of whom play either violin, piano or cello. The family appeared in the December 2019 Royal Variety Show and released their first album Carnival on Decca Classics in October 2020.
3. Sheku won the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition, the first black musician to take the title. In 2018, he became a household name after performing at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Windsor Castle.
4. His first two solo albums on the Decca Classics label were Inspiration in 2018 and Elgar in 2020. The latter reached Number 8 in the overall UK Official Album Chart, making Sheku the first cellist in history to reach the UK Top Ten.
5. Sheku has made debuts with orchestras such as the Seattle Symphony, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Stockholm Philharmonic, The Atlanta
Symphony, Japan Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, London Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie-Ochester Berlin, Barcelona Symphony and Baltimore Symphony.
6. In June 2018, Sheku received the Male Artist of the Year and the Critics’ Choice Awards at the Classic BRIT Awards. In July of that year, he became the first artist to receive the new BRIT Certified Breakthrough Award, having sold over 30,000 copies of his debut album in the UK and surpassing 100,000 album sales worldwide.
7. Sheku also performs with his sister, Isata and brother, Braimah, as a member of the Kanneh-Mason Trio. They have performed extensively throughout the U.K. and also in the USA and the Caribbean. In 2018 they won the Royal Academy of Music Harold Craxton Chamber Music Prize.
8. Sheku was named one of Time Magazine’s 2018 Next Generation Leaders which recognises young people poised to shape the future. The Awards aim to elevate those who are working in different fields across the globe to build a better world.
9. In the Queen’s 2020 New Year’s Honours, Sheku was awarded an MBE for his services to music. He has been outspoken about music education and is currently an Ambassador of London Music Masters, a music education charity that supports young musicians in classical music.
10. He released his most-recent solo album Song on Decca Classics in September. The album sees Sheku perform music from Bach to Bacharach and beyond. It also includes Sheku’s version of the Irish ballad ‘Star of the County Down’.

10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT…
Paul LewisOn Monday 24 April pianist Paul Lewis makes a welcome return to the National Concert Hall for an evening of Schubert Sonatas as part of the International Concert Series. Here are ten things to know about the award-winning musician:
1. Born in Liverpool, Paul Lewis studied at Guildhall School of Music in London and took master classes with Alfred Brendel who befriended him and gave him private instruction.
2. He performs regularly as soloist with the world’s great orchestras and is a frequent guest at the most prestigious international festivals, including Lucerne, Mostly Mozart (New York), Tanglewood, Schubertiade, Salzburg and Edinburgh.
3. Paul’s numerous awards include the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year, two Edison awards, three Gramophone awards, the Diapason D’or de l’Annee, the Premio Internazionale Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the South Bank Show Classical Music award.
4. In 2016 he was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
5. His recital career takes him to venues such as London’s Royal Festival Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Berlin Philharmonie, Oji Hall in Tokyo and Melbourne’s Recital Centre.
6. Lewis has a long association with Beethoven. He performed all 32 of his piano sonatas on tour in the United States and Europe between 2005 and 2007. In summer 2010 Lewis became the first pianist to perform all five Beethoven Concertos in a single season of The BBC Proms.
7. The pianist is also closely associated with Schubert, he has released several acclaimed core works by the composer including the complete sonatas from the last years of his life plus the song cycles Die Schöne Müllerin and Winterreise with tenor Mark Padmore.
8. This National Concert Hall performance sees Lewis undertake Schubert’s Piano Sonatas Numbers 7, 14 and 17. It is part of a two-year Schubert Piano Sonata Series which will see the pianist perform the completed sonatas from the last 12 years of the composer’s life at venues around the world.
9. Each June Paul and his wife Bjørg Lewis run an annual chamber music festival, the Midsummer Music Festival, in Buckinghamshire.
10. In 2021 Paul Lewis became an Irish citizen.
