Chamber Music Series 2019/2020

Welcome/Fáilte The National Concert Hall’s mission is to foster and celebrate the appreciation, enjoyment and pure love of music as an integral part of Irish life. In addition to bringing the world’s great artists to our stage for Irish audiences to experience, intrinsic to this mission is the support of Irish musicians and creators. The Chamber Music Series 2019/20 gives our audiences the opportunity to hear a rich diversity of Irish artists perform the music of contemporary Irish composers as well as the great works of the classical music canon. As the national cultural institution for music we are proud of the close association we enjoy with many artists, ensembles and organisations across musical genres, both at home and abroad. As we enter a period of significant redevelopment of our site and a new remit for the National Symphony Orchestra, we look forward to building on these relationships in order to create an ever more vibrant, creative and relevant National Concert Hall for our musicians and audiences.

NCH CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES 2019-2020

NCH Chamber Music Series 2019/20 I am delighted to present the NCH Chamber Music Series for 2019/20. Taking place mainly in the Kevin Barry Recital Room, this programme offers the opportunity to hear music ranging from the baroque to the contemporary in a unique and intimate setting. The season is made up of thirteen individual series, from instrumental and vocal recitals to string quartets and larger ensembles. As well as favourite masterpieces of the core chamber music repertoire, works by twenty contemporary Irish composers can be heard across the season. The second iteration of the NCH/Sounding the Feminists series again focuses on female composers across the centuries whilst Tionscadal na nAmhrán Ealaíne Gaeilge / Irish Language Art Song Project presents new works by Irish and international composers exclusively in the Irish language. Prize-winning young Irish artists are celebrated in a series in the autumn and members of the RTÉ NSO and RTÉ Concert Orchestra come together for the John Lynch Chamber Music Project in the spring. With the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven being celebrated in 2020, we commence an extensive exploration of his music, influences and impact on musical history across both our chamber music programme and International Concert Series. Similarly, in March/April 2020 we have a focus on the music of the J.S Bach. The annual autumn series of Sunday String Quartet concerts brings us eight Irish and international ensembles in music ranging across the history of the genre from Haydn to Thomas Adès and the Irish Baroque Orchestra brings us music from 17th century Italy and France. Fans of the guitar can hear leading performers from the USA, Italy, Macedonia and Hungary as well as from Ireland. The season opens and closes with Schubert songs, commencing with the continuation of Conor Biggs epic survey of all the composer’s lieder and ending with three recitals in the Dublin Song Series where Schubert is the common thread. The programme is developed collaboratively with a range of individual and organisational partners and I would like to acknowledge the artistic co-operation of the many partners involved: Christopher Marwood and National String Quartet Foundation, Sounding the Feminists; Irish Baroque Orchestra; Hugh Tinney; Malcolm Proud; Camerata Kilkenny; Degani Piano Trio; Daírine Ní Mheadhra; Pauline Ashwood; Dearbhla Collins; Marco Ramelli; Conor Biggs as well as all the individual musicians involved.

Schubertreise Baritone Conor Biggs and pianist Michel Stas continue their epic multi-annual journey through the complete songs of Franz Schubert. Sunday 8 September 3pm Kevin Barry Recital Room Der Sänger D 149 Lodas Gespenst D 150 Auf einen Kirchhof D 151 Minona D 152 Das Bild D 155 Die Erwartung D 159 Sängers Morgenlied D 163 Sängers Morgenlied D 165 Amphiaraos D 166 For their twentieth outing in the complete songs of Schubert series (Schubertreise), Conor Biggs and Michel Stas present a programme dominated by the drawing-room opera style of writing so prevalent in Schubert’s output: pride of place falls to Lodas Gespenst, a Wagnerian canvas incorporating elements of Celtic mythology, while another epic song, ‘Minona’, continues the Celtic theme. There are also lengthy settings of poetry by Schiller and Körner, including the two contrasting versions of Sängers Morgenlied. Tickets: €15 1

Recital number twenty one: from the moral and musical dilemma posed by the lengthy Der Gott und die Bajadere to two of the finest of the Ossian settings, Cronnan and Das Mädchen von Inistore, as well as a host of shorter songs which demonstrate Schubert’s mastery of the miniature, in particular his settings of poetry by Gabriele von Baumberg. Tickets: €15

More celtic mythology in the Ossian setting Shilric und Vinvela; German mythology in Hermann und Thusnelda; a festive drinking song, Skolie; the exquisite miniature Der Jüngling an der Quelle, a shaggy dog story in Das gestörte Glück, and Beethovenian splendour in Dem Unendlichen. Hugh Tinney

19

NCH CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES 2019-2020

Beethoven: his predecessors and successors Series curated by Hugh Tinney Beethoven arrives on the planet at the end of the 18th century like some sort of new archetypal human, a towering Ozymandias whose works seem Promethean and inimitable. Only a handful of names from any artistic field in history appear to bear comparison with him for the way that he wrested an entire art-form into his own image for a time, to the degree that his greatest successors were forced either to struggle with his overpowering shadow, or to dismiss him as an aberration as both Chopin and Debussy did to some degree. Yet he also represents an apex and linking-point between the dying Classical paradigm in music and the start of the Romantic revolution that would dominate much of the 19th century’s musical output and thought. This series counterpoints mature works of his predecessors and successors with significant works of his own - not typical works, mind, because there are no typical works of Beethoven, such was his wide range! Although he was an exceptional original, he was acutely aware of, and valued highly, predecessors such as C.P.E. Bach, Haydn (one of Beethoven’s composition teachers), Mozart and the long-lived Clementi. Equally, the next generation’s great Germanic creative talents including Schubert, Robert and Clara Schumann, and Brahms - some of whom were also great pianists as Mozart, Clementi and Beethoven himself had been - each had to confront Beethoven’s powerful influence in the course of forging their own style. (Hugh Tinney)

The programme features quintets by Mozart, Beethoven, Glazunov and Hindemith, sextets by Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky and Schubert’s Octet for strings and wind. Full details will be announced at a later date. The National String Quartet Foundation was established to create and sponsor projects which bring live chamber music to audiences throughout Ireland. Its programme for supported by the Arts Council, includes a celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, with six commissions inspired by the master and nationwide performances of his complete string quartets played by eight different quartets, all based in Ireland or including Irish players.

Irish Language Art Song Project Welcome to the Irish Language Art Song Project. Irish is the oldest vernacular written language (i.e. non-Greek) in western Europe, and this longevity of tradition has created one of the great European literatures. Despite Irish language obliteration during colonization, the language has somehow, miraculously, survived. As the expression of a culture, the Irish language is immensely poetic and musical, and is ideally suited to the art song genre. However, in the classical music canon, the number of Irish language art songs is regrettably very small. In 2018, Bliain na Gaeilge/Year of Irish, in a desire to make a significant contribution to the canon of Irish language art song and to enliven interaction between classical composers and Irish language poets, Dáirine Ní Mheadhra commissioned fifty new art songs, set exclusively to Irish language texts, from Irish and International composers. All fifty songs are being recorded, and by November 2019 the song recordings and music scores (which include a pronunciation guide), will be available to download, at no cost, from a dedicated website generously hosted by the Irish Contemporary Music Centre. This will allow any singer worldwide the possibility of singing an art song in Irish. The Arts Council of Ireland provided funding for this project. This three-concert series in the Kevin Barry Recital Room at the National Concert Hall is the first public presentation of all fifty songs, and is most likely the first Irish language art song recital series in the history of the Irish state. Tionscadal na nAmhrán Ealaíne Gaeilge Fáilte go Tionscadal na nAmhrán Ealaíne Gaeilge. Is í an Ghaeilge an teanga dhúchais scríofa is sine (.i. cé is moite den Ghréigis) a taifeadadh in iarthar na hEorpa. Tá ceann de mhórlitríochtaí na hEorpa cruthaithe ag fad saoil an traidisiúin áirithe seo. In ainneoin na díobhála a deineadh ar an teanga mar chuid de chóilíniú na hÉireann, is míorúilt í go bhfuil an teanga tagtha slán inniu. Léiriú ar chultúr na hÉireann í an Ghaeilge – teanga thar a bheith fileata agus ceolmhar – atá an-fheiliúnach go deo do sheánra an amhráin ealaíne. I gceol clasaiceach na tíre seo, áfach, tá líon an-bheag d’amhráin ealaíne ar fáil sa teanga seo. Sa bhliain 2018 – Bliain na Gaeilge – agus í ag iarraidh cur go suntasach le canóin na n-amhrán ealaíne Gaeilge agus caidreamh a spreagadh idir chumadóirí clasaiceacha agus filí Gaeilge, chinn Dáirine Ní Mheadhra caoga amhrán ealaíne a choimisiúnú, chun go gcuirfí téascanna Gaeilge amháin faoi bhráid chumadóirí Éireannacha agus idirnáisiúnta. Tá taifead á dhéanamh ar an gcaoga amhrán agus, faoi mhí na Samhna beidh taifid de na hamhráin maraon le scóir cheoil (le treoracha fuaimnithe) ar fáil le híoslódáil saor in aisce ó shuíomh idirlín ar leith, óstaithe go flaithiúil ag an Contemporary Music Centre in Éirinn. Tabharfaidh sé seo deis d’amhránaí ar bith, aon áit ar domhan, amhrán ealaíne a chanadh i nGaeilge. Chuir Comhairle Ealaín na hÉireann maoiniú ar fáil don tionscadal seo. Cuirfear an caoga amhrán faoi bhráid an phobail don chéad uair ag sraith de thrí cheolchoirm i Seomra Ceadail Kevin Barry sa Cheoláras Náisiúnta. Gach seans gurb í seo an chéad sraith de cheadail amhráin ealaíne Ghaeilge ó bunaíodh an Stát. Dáirine Ní Mheadhra
