In 2013, you have represented NBCF at nearly 60 events nationally, including Triathlon Pink, The High Tea Party, Noosa Triathlon, Hockey Super Series in Perth, and of course the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic. Thank you for all those early starts and long days bringing NBCF to your communities and being such fantastic ambassadors of NBCF.

In 2013, nearly 3000 hours were donated by our dedicated volunteers around the country helping to achieve our goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. In this ‘end of year’ edition of the newsletter, you will read about some exciting new campaigns that you can tell all your friends and family around the dinner table this Christmas! You will also read about the research grants that have just been funded for 2014 and get to watch a video from NBCF staff made just for you. I would like thank you all for your support in 2013. It was a fantastic year for the volunteer program and it all comes down to all your hard work and dedication at our events and fundraisers around the country. I can’t wait to work with you again in 2014! From all of us at NBCF, we would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and healthy new year.

Next year, 35 people will be embarking on the trip of a lifetime; walking the Great Wall of China whilst raising funds for breast cancer research. With an initial goal of raising $100,000, these amazing fundraisers have already smashed that target with 5 months to go! We have such an amazing and motivated group of fundraisers on this trip – with already four people who have raised almost $10k! Good luck to volunteer Kim Brien who is taking part on this adventure. Feel free to check out their online fundraising page here: http://www.everydayhero.com.au/event/ stepstowardsacure

A great new campaign that gets the guys involved has raised just over $34,000 so far! Rodney (pictured, right) is from the remote mining community in Cannington, Queensland. He's a long-standing employee (14 years) and is not a fan of pink, but was willing to don the bright pink work wear to raise money for NBCF. Within three months, Rodney’s colleagues raised $10,000 for breast cancer research. To find out more about these “real men” check out the Real Men Wear Pink fundraising page for their stories. http://www.everydayhero.com.au/event/ realmenwearpink - look out for an event near you next year! A new sporting event joined the volunteer calendar this year which will have NBCF reaching more people than ever over the coming years. AO Blitz is an initiative by Tennis Australia (TA) that encourages people who play tennis – and those who have never picked up a racquet – the opportunity to fundraise for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia. TA will tour across the country, from Fremantle all the way to Hobart! It is also a great opportunity for volunteers in regional areas to volunteer for NBCF. It’s an exciting new campaign so keep an eye out for that next year!

The NBCF Board has approved nearly $8.5 million in new grant funding to start in 2014. The funding includes 12 Novel Concept Awards for innovative, cutting-edge projects, eight new fellowships and infrastructure funding. Some of the new projects are focused on advanced cancer, or metastatic disease, which is where cancer spreads away from the primary tumour in the breast to distant organs, typically the bone or lungs. Advanced breast cancer is essentially incurable. Several researchers who have received Novel Concept Awards are studying the genetic characteristics of advanced cancer, and new ways to prevent and treat advanced cancer. Other projects to begin in 2014 cover topics include: 

Developing better treatments for triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease

Preserving fertility in women having treatment for breast cancer

Supporting young women who carry the breast cancer gene, BRCA.

Finding new ways to make HER2 breast cancers more responsive to hormone therapy to increase the effectiveness of treatment.

We want to say THANK YOU! Click on the You Tube link below to meet a few NBCF staff members as they film their personal thank you message to all of our amazing volunteers!
