Performance  Notes The  ensemble  for  Matthew  28  can  >it  into  two  rows. Row  1  -­‐  from  conductor  left  to  right:  >lute,  oboe,  clarient,  harp  (takes  two  rows),  violin  II,  violin  I Row  2  -­‐  from  conductor  left  to  right:  trumpet,  horn,  trombone,  bassoon,  harp,  cello Timpani  should  be  behind  strings Solo  vocalists  can  be  on  either  the  left  or  right  sides  of  the  conductor,  whichever  they  prefer. Of  course  this  setup  is  not  set  in  stone.  If  circumstances  arise  in  which  this  will  not  work,  please   feel  free  to  alter. Both  works,  Matthew  27:  45-­‐54  and  Matthew  28,  can  be  treated  as  two  movements  of  a  larger   work.  If  this  is  the  case,  some  time  will  be  needed  to  rearrange  the  ensemble.  The  above  setup   may  remain  on  stage  throughout  both  works,  however,  only  the  performers  needed  for   Matthew  27  should  be  on  stage  for  Matthew  27.  Those  performers  should  be  arranged   according  to  the  setup  provided  in  the  Matthew  27  score.  Only  between  pieces  should  the   remaining  performers  enter  the  stage.  

Program  Notes I  composed  Matthew  28  as  a  sequel  to  my  other  work,  Matthew  27:  45-­‐54.  Like  the  previous   work,  the  text  for  Matthew  28  is  taken  from  the  King  James  version  of  the  bible.  The  text  depicts   the  resurrection  of  Christ  three  days  after  His  cruci>ixion  as  well  as  the  angel's  visit  to  Mary   Magdalene  and  Mother  Mary  to  announce  Jesus'  resurrection,  the  bribing  of  the  soldiers  who   guarded  Jesus'  tomb,  and  the  Great  Commission. The  same  three-­‐note  motif  established  in  Matthew  27  is  present  here,  building  the  harmonic   foundation  for  this  piece.  This  motif  also  serves  as  groundwork  for  various  thematic  ideas,  such   as  the  motif  presented  in  the  cello  at  the  beginning  of  the  work. Matthew  28  features  a  solo  baritone  and  solo  mezzo-­‐soprano.  The  baritone  is  the  narrator  (with   occasional  help  from  the  mezzo-­‐soprano)  and  the  voice  of  the  cheif  priests  while  the  mezzo   serves  as  the  voice  of  the  angel.  Both  voices  together  depict  the  voice  of  Jesus  Christ. The  work  premiered  on  April  7,  2012  (Easter)  at  the  Forbes  Center  Recital  Hall  on  the  campus   of  James  Madison  University  in  Harrisonburg,  VA.  The  premiere  featured  soloists,  Kyle  Yampiro   (baritone)  and  Martha  Hensler  (mezzo-­‐soprano).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        -­‐  Nathan  Whittaker

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

And the angel answered and said unto the women, "Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified."

6.

"He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."

"And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you."

And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, "All hail." And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

10. Then said Jesus unto them, "Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me." 11. Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. 12. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, 13. Saying, "Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept." 14. "And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you." 15. So they took the money, and did as they were taught. 16. Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. 18. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." 19. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" 20. "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Amen.
