university// CONTEXT/ The following projects are selected designs from my 6 years of studies in Nancy and Milan. Please find here the link to my work for a workshop in Pristina, in Kosovo: https://issuu.com/giulia.mp/ docs/cgl_prishtina_book

M.A.S.// CONTEXT/ This project is located between the suburb of ÂŤTrois-MaisonsÂť and the old town in Nancy. The site is characterised by its enclave situation determined by the presence of two medieval fortified gates.

PROGRAM/ House of Performing Arts (Three national institutions: the opera, ballet and theater of Lorraine.

CONCEPT/ The stage experience is a special time in life as in the city. It calls itself the establishment of a specific dialectic between the street and the internal spaces, between artists and pedestrians of the street and between the interdependence and independence of each of them. This project proposes a journey from the city to the home. In this journey are considered: artistic process (by offering visual and sound relationships with rehearsal rooms), topographical and historical site (emphasizing the existing identity without distorting it), materialise intellectual and sensitive elevation (that the program provides) by a particular physical elevation. This is also a fresh new look and a new reading of the project environment which is offered by the building, thanks to the joint spaces, framing and work light, while closely linked to the materiality of the architectural project.

MDTHQ// CONTEXT/ This project is located in the center of Seichamp, in the outskirts of Nancy. It is a place whose typology is a crossroads between Lorraine-village and suburbs.

PROGRAM/ Library coupled with a center dedicated to contemporary letters.

CONCEPT/ The concept was to create a new architectural landmark in the «citycenter». On the one hand, this emphasizes the importance of the program in the city and secondly it generates a new architectural dynamic in a village without real qualities / architectural identities.   The volume is simple (cuboid) and crossed by an oblique axis. This generates the main circulation space of the building, views between floors, spaces and light.   This main traffic consists of stairs whose width is reduced from floor to floor, from the ground floor / exhibition hall, to the last level, consisting of offices and the roofgarden. This internal street is designed as a symbolic expression of the climb toward knowledge. The facade is folded to create guidelines and perspectives. It also resembles the book and its cover, the main element of the program.

GALFA// CONTEXT/ This project is a tower built in 60’s, located in the neighborhood of the central station of Milan, Italy. It is considered an icon of Italian internationalism.

PROGRAM/ The project is to convert the former bank headquarters in to a media library and a center of contemporary art, with a restaurant / bar on the top floor.

CONCEPT/ In this project, the first thought was to define a scale to the building and propose a hierarchy of spaces. For this we create a «backbone» consisting of key areas. Each box determines a section or a specific function of the building. Thus, both interiorspaces and external aesthetics are modified without distorting its original design. A new identity is now determined. This sequencing begins at the buildings entrance to the crowning of it. The two modules are the only elements that are oriented perpendicular to the building orientation. Thus, we have a beginning and an end of sequence that are created. These items can also be seen as a contemporary reinterpretation of the tripartite composition of the facade.

Construction details

In this project, the first thought was to define a scale to the building and propose a hierarchy of spaces. For this we create a «backbone» consisting of key areas. Each box determines a section or a specific function of the building. Thus, both interiorspaces and external aesthetics are modified without distorting its original design. the CAP// CONTEXT/ This project is located in the old industrial port of Trieste to the east of Italy. To give a scale to the site, the central mineral space measures around 65 hectares.

PROGRAM/ To revitalise the area, it was decided to implant a new cultural center operating both across the neighbourhood and across the city.

CONCEPT/ The Cap (Casa delle Arte e dei Passatempi) is a large building (300m long by 15m wide) with 5 different programmatic entities: a media library, a recreation center, a music school, a theater and a Contemporary Arts center. The five programs are indeed cut out by, first, the existing frames of the site, and second orientations and views of the site. This new landmark works as the key element / pivot between the new park and the huge mineral space. The design of the three entities is closely linked: it is structured with straight connections between important points of the site and building. These are prioritised according to their magnitudes and determine soil slopes, so as to make a large dynamic space.

SCALO F.// CONTEXT/ This project is located in an old station / transit cargo area; the scalo Farini, Milan, Italy.

PROGRAM/ The project is to convert the former post train depot and the surrounding area into a park.

CONCEPT/ The idea was to create a space that could work either at the local scale or the city scale. The design is defined by the some important points. Formerly an industrial area, the first thought was to use the landscape as a tool to clean the soil (phytoremediation), and a way to create an evolutive and always changing landscape. After a deep analysis of the neighbourhood (and the city), we have drawn on one hand the fastest way to move from a point of interest to another, and on the other hand, a second path network that proposes a route within the different spaces of the park. The paths determined some important circulation nodes where we could specifically design some public spaces. The functions of these spaces is determined by the kind of users according to our previous analysis.

office// CONTEXT/ The following projects are selected designs from my professional experiences at Colboc Franzen & Associates in Paris and Thomas and Spiers Architects in London.

AMIRAL// CONTEXT/ Competition for an office building in Paris. Mission: modeling the surrounding site in 3D, creating a 3D file to build a model to 1:100 , and drawings to illustrate some space experiments and details. R+9

PROGRAM/ Re-establishment of an existing building into an office building.

CONCEPT/ R+5

R+4

R+2

Exemples de propositions d’aménagement des plateaux en «open-space».

The idea was to play with shading to create a dynamic facade (the blind is an iconic element of the chic surrounding). We tried to keep the inside as flexible as possible while keeping some more intimate spaces. The four axonometrics show example of how the space could be managed.

The model mesures 1m x 0.5 m and is composed of 52 card layers.

gallister// CONTEXT/ This model at scale 1/200 was made for Thomas and Spiers Architects. The project is located in Harkstead, in east of England, on Stour riverside.

PROGRAM/ The project consists of the erection of a new family house at the top of the site. My task was to realise the site model for volume research.

CONCEPT/ Presented here is the model of the existing site. Trees and existing construction are modellised in order to understand as much as possible the composition of the area, in terms of views, levels, etc. As the pictures in the bottom right corner show, the project is still under design, and the model is one of the main tools to work on the volumetry and orientation of the house.

PROPOSAL

VIEW FROM ABOVE OF THE NEW ACCESS SEQUENCE View from above of 3the rear extension

This project is based on some important points. The first one was to connect two architectural temporalities, or two different architectural aesthetics. We choose the minimalistic approach through a fineness in terms of volume and components of the facades. The second point was to rethink/create the circulation within the site. We tried to create a route composed of common spaces (new access, new courtyard garden/semi private square) and green spaces (rooftop gardens). The difficulty was that the project has to deal with a complex imbrication with the existing buildings.

The concept of the project is to clearly distinguish the architectural language between the existing construction and the new extension. We tried to play with the perception of the loads and create a visual tension with a brick floating volume carried by a timber volume and a glazed surface.

Photo// INTENTIONS/ Photography is an art that I like a lot. I find it fascinating both in its authentic dimension translation of reality, but also in the antagonistic manipulation of reality of which it is capable. To think about photography is to think about a way of looking at everyday life: where to look, how to look, what to look at, but not be imprisoned in a photographic view of the world. I love working with black and white photography because I think it is free of certain aesthetic colours (I do not reject them). It shows the spaces and light materials. It allows us to focus on photography in-itself. I also appreciate the poetics that can emerge from such a clichĂŠ. So I experiment with a Nikon D3100, Pentax K1000 (film) Polaroid and disposable cameras. The corpus contains the following photograph which are most important in connection with my questionnnements on the definition of architecture and space: the relation to the context, scale (from architecturology), forms, and the symbolism of the architecture or architectural image. These photographs were taken in Milan and Tokyo over the last three years.
