Technical Editing Example

Technical Editing Example One of the main focuses of my higher education has been technical writing. Both during my time as a Professional Writing major at Michigan State University and as an English major at Northern Illinois University, I honed my ability to tailor my words to suit different audiences. Most often, I use this skill to translate complex ideas for an uninformed audience. This project was an assignment I was given in a grad-level Technical Editing course, which created a problem that an editor could solve. It challenged me to take text on open-heart surgery written by a medical professional and use both written language and visual aids to project the same information, while making it easier to absorb for my intended audience: concerned patients with no formal medical education. The text given to me in the assignment was disorganized, repetitive, and unclear. By using the skills I'd learned in class up to that point, I was able to reduce it in length, boost its clarity, and make it easier to skim for those readers looking for a particular piece of information (as not all of my intended audience would necessarily be interested in reading the entirety of the text). I think the results of this project showcase my ability to understand complex text, to perform research to supplement existing material, and to communicate information efficiently. The next page contains the doctor's original text, and the page following it is my revision.
