Could YouTube Replace Television? By: Natasha Stevens ( 9th Grade ) Published: 2 / 14 / 2018 Publisher: Ms. Buchanan YouTube is a company made in 2007. Ever since then, this website has been the most loved website, as almost 5 billion videos on YouTube have been watched every single day. Because of these awe-inspiring statistics, there has been a question that I have wanted to be answered, and I believe I Created By Natasha Stevens found the answer for it. The question that I had pondered was: Can YouTube replace Television? While, It is true Television was probably the thing people grew up on, but a graph taken in 2016 seems to rule out that bias. The graph shows that teenagers are beginning to watch YouTube videos more than they are watching Cable, and because this was taken in 2016, it’s likely that that number has grown. However, just because I believe YouTube is better than cable, I’d be lying if I was saying YouTube has no flaws. If you don’t know what YouTube or Television is, then this paragraph is the one you need. I’ll start with YouTube. YouTube is a free video sharing website that makes it easy to watch online videos. Now, YouTube is now one of the most popular sites on the web, with people watching over 6 billion hours per month. However, although it does get good ratings, that still doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Now, let’s move on to Television. Television is a system that’s used for transmitting visual images and sound that are reproduced on screens, chiefly used to broadcast programs for entertainment, information, and education. Or, basically, a color box ( as my dad likes to call it ). Also, this color box seems to be pretty famous, considering that there’s approximately over 275 million television sets, and that’s only going over America. The TV allows people easy access to the many television shows and channels that are alive today. These things include Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and The Big Bang Theory. Like I said before, YouTube is a vast place for creativity and imagination to run wild. However, not all imaginary thoughts can be well. Because YouTube allows anyone to upload “anything” they want, some things that shouldn’t be uploaded is uploaded. For instance, there has been a recent secret Pedo-Ring that was hidden on YouTube that has gone unnoticed for lots of years. Of course, after being notified of it, YouTube took down all the videos they could find, but shouldn’t something as disgusting as that already be taken down? This shows that either YouTube doesn’t care or doesn’t check the videos that are being posted, and that should be one of the most important things you should check. Especially in a community that is so wide and vast. Also, there have been different times when people have been favored over other people. An example of this is whenever a famous YouTuber, Logan Paul, uploaded a video of
him going into a local forest in Japan called the ‘ Suicide Forest ‘. In this forest he had found a dead person and ended up disrespecting the corpse. Of course, this video had gotten lots of attention and caused a ‘ YouTube war ‘. And even after getting so many reports about it, YouTube didn’t take the main video down. However, whenever someone else uploaded the video, the video was deleted in less than a few days. Because YouTube is so wide and free to use, the videos on there can be watched for free, rather than Cable’s monthly subscriptions. This means it’s a free center to view all kinds of entertainment. YouTube is also transferable because you can have it as an app on your phone, tablet, or laptop. Also, because YouTube is so famous, all the new trends emerge from there, rather than TV. Also, if you’re trying to become famous, rather than trying out for something like Disney, all you need is a recorder and something you can upload on so you can videotape yourself and then put it on your YouTube page. Although this doesn’t give you guaranteed stardom, it's a painless start that costs you nothing. Television has been along for a long time, lasting since 1925. Because it has lived for so long, there has been lots of controversy around it. This goes from racism being introduced to a children’s Television section that may not be helping your child as well as YouTube can. In Television, whether intentional or not, instances of racism has been present. A show called “Good Time” had created a scene where when a white male was thrown into jail, a bunch of mean and rude black men came up. I did find myself thinking that I was just overreacting, but that thought died down whenever I realized that it only had a group of black men in there. It had seemed like white people visit prison while black people live there. Also, it’s very noticeable that there are more white people on TV than other races. Of course, there are some exceptions like shows like “Orange is the New Black”, “Greys Anatomy”, or “Atlanta”. Casting racism in Television seems to be fading away, but there’s proof that it has happened once. If it’s happened once, then it’s more than likely to happen again. Television has a vast majority of shows and some of which are channels that mainly adults go to. Because Television doesn’t have a large selection of channels that are only for small children with minds that’s still developing, TV isn’t exactly the greatest thing for a child to grow up on. Of course, there’s more shows coming out but it takes time for each show to produce another episode, and there’s only three other channels that can stream episodes that’s for that child. However, on YouTube there’s a vast section just for kids. In fact, it’s so big that YouTube even made a site for kids to go on. Television is an easy way for someone to view the most common TV shows around the world. This means that all the common shows are easy to view with only a small fee that you need to pay for each month (depending on who your television provider is). If you ever tried viewing these famous shows on YouTube, then the video would either be deleted or not even exist. It also shows what’s going on in the world with its various news sources. Television also shows a higher database of shows that adults can watch since the videos uploaded to YouTube is mostly for teens’ viewing. As opposed to YouTube’s ‘getting famous’ benefit, actors who are on TV get a bigger sum of money and has an even bigger chance of being famous. After seeing all the facts and resources, I’ll now tell my answer. Can YouTube Replace Television? No, only because I highly doubt YouTube has as much benefits as Television has. However, it does have the potential to. If YouTube was able to close up all the problems, I have no doubt in my mind that it’ll overpower Television. Everyone’s families can choose what they want their children to watch or grow up on, but I have a feeling that Television is going to be that thing for a very long time.
