The lights dim as the audience takes their seats on orange couches and pleather stools in the upstairs. A popular catchy theme song begins: “Who is she? Who is this ravishing sight? With a fantasy face and staggering smile.” A spot light illuminates the stage as Paige Turner, one of New York’s prominent drag queens, makes her entrance. As the lyrics “I didn’t eat yesterday, and I’m not going today, and I’m not going to eat tomorrow, cause I’m going to be a supermodel” play, Turner comically spits the chewed pieces of carrot into the audience, clutching her stomach and looking distressed. The audience roars with laughter as she hits a final pose. In New York, drag queens are masters of the nightlife performance world. Men dressed as women who make a living performing in clubs, many of them are actors who fell into female impersonator roles; others are creative types who found drag as a unique form of self expression. Drag performer MargOH Channing, who transforms herself into Liza Minnelli, discussed the pros and cons of two queens dating. “I think the big issue would be finding a drag queen to date,” said Channing. Part of being a drag queen is getting attention. Although it’s not a nice thing to say, in many cases we’re egomaniacs. I think we’d give each other flack in the form of a catfight. OBJECTIVE Misster is a double sided magazine for drag queens. One side caters to the man in drag, the other to the man out of drag. The in drag side focuses on life as a preformer and the out of drag side focuses on their everyday lives. This magazine is meant for the LGBT audience and includes sections about relationships, money, and careers.

big personality goes along with big hair. Norbury lists a few, beginning with Dee Dee Ambrose: “She did drag, but she was actually one of Vancouver’s first transsexuals. And while she was transitioning, she would entertain at Champagne Charlie’s. She would lip-sync to Marilyn Monroe numbers, Barbara Streisand too. Dee Dee was huge. She married a guy and moved to Calgary, where she died of a heart attack 10 long and many long and tiresome years ago” she said. Then there was Sandy St Peters, “who was thin back then, and got bigger and bigger,” Norbury says. “She started off looking like Twiggy and in her later years, more like Peggy Lee. There was Stella Mae. Those were, like, the big ones.” Big personalities on a small performance circuit. pagne Charlie’s was the place to perform, Norbury says, before adding “then

“A drag queen could make, easy, $40 a performance if enough people tipped her, but now it’s just not right to tip them with a loonie or a toonie,” declares Norbury, who collects American $1 bills precisely for that purpose. She then explains the etiquette of tipping a drag queen.“Number one, timing is everything! You can’t go giving her a tip in the middle of her dance routine. The other thing is if a drag queen likes you she’ll take it. But if she doesn’t like you, if she’s angry or irked in some way, she can shun you and you’re left standing. Everyone can see, and you know that you’ve done something really wrong.” Then there’s the minion. “Say you’re a drag queen expecting a really big amount of tipping,” Norbury says. “In that case you have a minion take the money. o I know what you’re thinking, but before you can even dream about saving money you have to know where your money is going. There’s simply no way around it. How can you decide where to make cuts or find extra cash to save if you have no idea where all of your money is going? You can’t. So, it’s time to create a budget. The thing is, you don’t have to make it a chore. In fact, many drag queens get through life without tracking every single penny each and every day. You can probably get by doing the same. Initially, you do have to at least sit down and find out where

he gay, lesbian, bisexual community is in better financial health than the rest of the country on average. Not only do gay people earn more than the average American does, gay people are more likely to be employed, they have more money in savings and they are better at saving debt, according to a Nov. 14 survey of more than 1,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people by Prudential. How much is being spent on wigs, dresses, shoes, pads, and makeup? Once you have created a clear picture of where your money goes in a typical month you can begin to spot trends and problem areas. After you’ve found the problem areas you’ll have a better idea of where you can cut back and by how much. Then you can use that money to apply to your savings. As you can see, the idea is to paint a picture of where your money is going and isn’t so much about tracking every single dollar you spend throughout the day. Only 7 percent of respondents reported to be out of a job, while the national average stands at 7.9 percent. When it comes to putting away money for the future, gay households save on average $6,000 more than the national average. Gay households also have $4,000 less. Results are encouraging given the number of financial

financial hurdles gay people face in today’s political climate. The 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which bans same-sex marriage from being recognized at a federal level, is one of the main factors that inhibits financial affluence among gay people.
