Iakovos Kambanelis (or Kampanellis) (Greek: Ιάκωβος Καμπανέλλης) (December 2, 1922 – March 29, 2011) was a Greek poet, playwright, screenwriter, lyricist, and novelist. Born 2 December 1922 in Hora in the island of Naxos, Kambanelis appears as one of the most prominent Greek artists of the 20th century. As a survivor of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, he authored a Mauthausen cantata with music composed by Mikis Theodorakis. He has also written a book known as Mauthausen describing his experiences from the concentration camp. He authored at least 12 films and he directed two of them. In addition, he was known as a verse writer. Iakovos Kambanelis died of long-term kidney failure on March 29th, 2011. Famous plays: “Backyard of Miracles”, “Neighbourhood of Angels”. Script for film: “Stella” directed by Michalis Kakoyannis

eTwinning project: “Profiling a Nation through the Arts” The Art of Drama

For the drama activity the 6th Graders of the 10th Heliopolis Primary School chose Iakovo Kampanelli, a Greek playwright who is considered to be the leading Greek post-war dramatist. His major ambition was to write a series of theatrical plays depicting modern Greeks. We chose Kampanellis’ play “ Our Great Circus” which is thought to be a milestone in Modern Greek Drama. It was staged for the first time in the summer of 1973 during the junta (coup d’etat). The shows gathered as many people as the political demonstrations against the dictatorship. After watching the play staged by Senior High School students we picked Scene 14 bearing the title, “The Statue” in which two modern Greeks are having a brief discussion with the statue of Theodoros Kolokotronis, one of our ancestors, a Greek general who fought courageously against the Turks in the Greek Independence War in the 19th century. Kolokotronis was convicted for high treason by the Foreign Powers who were in charge in Greece after the War, which was unfair because he was a national hero. That is why we refrained from having him talking in English. We adapted the original text and made Kolokotronis talk in Greek to some Greek pupils who translate his words in English for the children’s foreign friends to understand what the hero is talking about. The script of the play might look all Greek to you but in fact what Kolokotronis says is translated into English by the Greek pupils.
