MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR On behalf of the Nashville Sports Council’s Board of Directors, I would like to share with you our 201920 Fiscal Year Annual Report, which highlights our results from the past year and the positive impact we continue to make on the City of Nashville through events and Nashville Sports Council initiatives.

As we look back on an unprecedented 12 months, we can see how the Nashville Sports Council has consistently been a major driving force behind Nashville’s economic development.

The Nashville Sports Council has helped Nashville become the Best Sports City in the country by recruiting a lineup of events that includes the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and the best is yet to come.

What a tremendous honor for Nashville, as selected by the Sports Business Journal!

As we all know, our success as a sports destination has had many authors.

Our city’s collective efforts are the real reason that we have received this honor and recognition. The public and private sectors, along with the community as a whole, continually contribute day in and day out allowing the Music City to thrive as a sports town.

While this is technically a 2019 award, we know that it would have never happened without many years of successful events, partnerships, sponsorships, collaboration and volunteerism. These are the attributes that separate us from any city in the country and they will continue to be the backbone of our future successes.

The Cooper Steel Speakers Series is one of the many benefits of being a member of the Nashville Sports Council. Members have the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look from coaches, players and other sport executives, as well as network with other members and guests. We would like to thank Cooper Steel for their generous support of this great member benefit.

VANDERBILT BASKETBALL On Aug. 29, the Nashville Sports Council held its first Speaker Series of 2019-20 at Topgolf Nashville. The event included new Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball head coach Jerry Stackhouse, women’s assistant head coach Shereka Wright and (now) Athletic Director Candice Storey Lee. The event focused on the upcoming season on West End and was moderated by Joe Fisher, the Voice of the Commodores.

COOPER STEEL SPEAKERS SERIES NASHVILLE PREDATORS FACE-OFF LUNCHEON Our members were afforded an exclusive opportunity to hear from Nashville Predators players and coaching staff during our Predators Face-Off Luncheon on Oct. 19. The annual event was held inside the Lexus Lounge at Bridgestone Arena and featured a panel discussion with captains Mattias Ekholm, Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis along with head coach Peter Laviolette and GM David Poille. Members enjoyed a catered lunch inside the Lexus Lounge before watching the Predators practice. The event also featured a jersey presentation to Cooper Steel’s Salute to Service recipient Daniel LoGuidice, a U.S. Army veteran.

SPEAKERS SERIES

SCOTT HAMILTON U.S. Figure Skating legend Scott Hamilton was the featured speaker on Nov. 12 at the Noelle Hotel in downtown Nashville. Hamilton, a Franklin resident, played a pivotal role in helping Nashville land the 2022 TOYOTA U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which were announced a month prior. During the discussion, emceed by WKRN chief meteorologist Danielle Breezy, Hamilton gave members a behind the scenes look at how Nashville secured the championships, which will also serve as the final qualifier for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

WKU VS. LOUISVILLE SEPTEMBER 2019 On Sept. 14, the Nashville Sports Council assisted the athletic departments from the University of Louisville and Western Kentucky University as both faced off in the �Music City Showdown� at Nissan Stadium for a non-conference matchup.

The game was the second of a three-game series and only one played at a neutral-site. The game featured a number of former Nashville and Middle Tennessee prep athletes.

Louisville totaled 415 yards of offense in a high-scoring, 38-21 win over their in-state foe to improve to 2-1 in a season that saw the Cardinals later return to Nashville in December for the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl.

2022 TOYOTA U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCEMENT OCTOBER 2019 Twenty-five years after it became the first sporting event to take place inside Bridgestone Arena, the TOYOTA U.S. Figure Skating Championships are set to return to the Music City in 2022.

The Nashville Sports Council, U.S. Figure Skating, City of Nashville and Bridgestone Arena announced the selection during a press conference on Oct. 30 at the Ford Ice Center.

The 2022 Championships will serve as the final qualifying event prior to the nomination of the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team prior to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The last

time the Championships were in Nashville, 14-year-old Tara Lipinski introduced herself to the world becoming the youngest Ladies Champion ever beating out past champions Michelle Kwan and Nicole Bobek.

Numerous partners helped Nashville land this momentous event including Olympic champion and Nashvillian Scott Hamilton, who said the event “will be a celebration like no other.�

NEW BOWL TITLE

SPONSORSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT DECEMBER 2019 The Music City Bowl welcomed TransPerfect as the bowl’s new title sponsor on Dec. 18, 2019.

TransPerfect is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in translation services and technologies that enable businesses to reach audiences anywhere in the world and in any language. The company is the largest in its industry with more than 100 global offices on six continents, including global hubs in New York, London, Barcelona, and Hong Kong.

the College Football Playoffs, New Year’s Six bowls and the Citrus Bowl selections. The bowl’s new Big Ten partnership will provide a Big Ten team each of the next six years in Nashville. Following the College Football Playoff and New Year’s Six selections, the Music City Bowl will have the third selection from the Big Ten, behind the Citrus Bowl and Outback Bowl, in 2020, 2022, and 2024 and sharing the third and fourth selections with the Las Vegas Bowl in 2021, 2023 and 2025.

This six-year agreement with TransPerfect aligns with the bowl’s six-year exclusive partnership with the SEC and Big Ten. The team selections for the SEC will remain in a pool format with five other bowls sharing a selection following

“Tens of thousands of fans packed into downtown during one of the city’s top weekends leading to $16.7 million in direct economic impact.”

The 2019 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl was the bowl’s 22nd edition and helped celebrate the 150th anniversary of college football by featuring a thrilling SEC vs. ACC showdown between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Louisville Cardinals.

In front of a raucous crowd of nearly 47,000 fans, both teams exchanged leads in the first half. After a few halftime adjustments, first-year Cardinals coach Scott Satterfield helped guide Louisville to a dominant second half and the program’s first bowl win in four years in a 38-28 win.

Cardinals quarterback Micale Cunningham was named the bowl’s MVP after throwing for nearly 300 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions while also accounting for over 80 yards on the ground.

The bowl festivities were cappedoff with a postgame concert inside the bowl’s Fan Zone on Broadway featuring Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts.

In all, tens of thousands of fans packed into downtown during one of the city’s top weekends leading to $16.7 million in direct economic impact.

RUN FOR THE RETURN

VIRTUAL 5K JUNE 2020

In the latter half of June 2020, the Nashville Sports Council decided to host virtual initiatives and events amid the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country.

One of those events was the Run for the Return Virtual 5K presented by Team Construction, which took place from June 12-29 and served as the Sports Council’s end-of-year annual fundraiser.

The 5K was focused on allowing sports fans across Nashville, Middle Tennessee and the Southeast to show their support for their favorite sports team, all while safely running, walking or jogging 3.1 miles. Each runner who completed the 5K and submitted their times were entered into a prize drawing which included tickets to future inperson sporting events.

Hundreds of runners helped make this virtual 5K a rousing success and raise crucial funds to help the Sports Council continue to recruit major sporting events to the Music City.

WOMEN IN SPORTS The mission of the Sports Council’s Women in Sports initiative is to increase the awareness, engagement and promotion of women in sports through events and community involvement.

The Sports Council continues to grow its efforts in promoting women’s athletics throughout the Music City and Middle Tennessee. Along with consistent social media promotions, the Sports Council developed a first-person feature narrative this year called “Through Her Eyes” where female athletes, coaches and administrators can directly share their experiences with the public. The first edition was launched in February featuring former Vanderbilt Women’s Basketball center Mariella Fasoula.

This year, the Women in Sports

committee hosted a number of events including the first Nashville Coaches TipOff Breakfast in October at The Wellspire Center. Head women’s basketball coaches from Vanderbilt, Tennessee State, Belmont, Middle Tennessee State University and Lipscomb sat on a panel in front of a packed crowd and previewed the 2019-20 season. The event was a rousing success, adding another annual event to the WiS Committee calendar.

The committee also hosted a happy hour in January ahead of the Tennessee vs.

Vanderbilt women’s basketball game on West End. Additionally, the committee also educated local children on area female Olympians at Kidsville at the Parthenon in late February.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS NETWORK The Nashville Sports Council’s Young Professionals Network (YPN) serves to connect and engage young emerging professionals and sports enthusiasts through unique networking opportunities and sporting events. In FY 2019-20 the YPN held several networking events across Downtown Nashville helping expand the YPN across Middle Tennessee.

“The Young Professionals Team has been a benefit to growing my connections and learning about other sport leagues in Nashville. The events are always a great time where members can receive the inside scoop on sporting events, free/discounted tickets, and engaging happy hours to get to know one another. I look forward to the future of the Nashville Sports Council’s YP Team!”

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to Charlie Henslee on being recognized as the 2019-20 Nashville Sports Council Volunteer of the Year!

Thank you for continuing to support the Nashville Sports Council with your efforts, we truly appreciate your passion and dedication.

Charlie began volunteering at the NSC when one of his colleagues mentioned it during a conversation about athletics and giving back. He says that he loves being a volunteer with NSC because some of the events he gets to work with aren’t something you get to do every day.

His favorite moments include being a VIP driver for the Final Four and getting the chance to hold the Super Bowl trophy during the 2019 NFL Draft in downtown Nashville.

A few of his favorite events that Charlie has worked on includes the SEC Men’s and Women’s basketball tournaments, a multi-day event with plenty of opportunities.

Charlie said he loves the passion that he is able to put into these events.
