Offering the largest array of artworks on view at a Nashville hotel, 21c Nashville features top national and international artists of all media. Visitors may expect to see sound installations, photographs, videos, large-scale paintings, site-specific installations, sculpture, and interactive artworks throughout the museum hotel. Thoughtfully curated by Alice Gray Stites, the changing exhibitions fill the dedicated public galleries and the Gray & Dudley restaurant. Visitors may also engage with art in the public restrooms and elevators. Those staying at the hotel also enjoy art on guest levels and in customized suites. Open to the public 24/7. www.21cmuseumhotels.com/nashville

Kimpton Aertson Hotel Midtown/Vanderbilt

Located steps away from Vanderbilt University, the Kimpton Aertson design took inspiration from the school’s namesake, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and his Netherlandish kinsman Jan Aertson of Bilt. In the lobby, wooden sculptural wall hangings by Jong-Rye Cha and Ara Peterson evoke wave-like movement through undulating patterns establishing a connection with Commodore Vanderbilt. Patterns etched into black stone floors create an abstract map of Nashville in the hotel entry. Works by internationally known 12

Entering the lobby it is immediately apparent that art is part of the hotel’s design concept. An inlaid wooden compass rose created by Patrick Hayes of Nashville’s 1767 sets the contemporary tone of the hotel with its locally salvaged materials and polished detailing. A curated selection of artworks by local and international artists fills the walls of all public spaces, including hallways, the hotel’s famed restaurant L.A. Jackson, and the private guest rooms. Working to bridge classic Nashville with its new eccentric character, painter Caitlin Mello created contemporary presidential portraits that pose questions of the heroes represented. The inn’s six guest suites feature former presidents who have connections with the region, including James Buchanan, James Polk, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Mello paid special attention to including hidden insights into the famous men for viewers to discover.
