Music Study

For the first prompt of the semester we were tasked with selecting multiple songs from a given list. After we chose three to four songs, we were then instructed to slowly narrow down our selections to one. After we had our chosen song, we had to listen to the song repeatedly all while drawing our own interpretations of the song we chose. Once we had our interpretaions complete we moved onto the next phase of the project. We were now tasked with converting our 2-D compositions into 3-D studies of the song. The jump from 2-D to 3-D provided a challenge, as we now had to think of a way to turn an abstract drawing into a 3-D model. The song I chose to interperet was “Oye Como Va” by Carlos Santana. This song came across very calming and soothing and that is what my compositions attempt to illustrate.

Music Studio 2

The theme of music was continued on the second chapter of studio. Instead of solely exploring the music itself, we now incorporated our artist and developed a building with them in mind. This building was created with our artist’s pleasures in mind to allow them a private space for them to not only create music, but also relax. This chapter was connected to the previous as we had to create the building with our previous 2-D compositions in mind. My Building was created with the intention of conveying the feelings Carlos Santana’s music conveys and to provide a space for him to create music as well as relax.

Diagramming 3

After chapter two wrapped, we transitioned into chapter three. In chapter three we took a break from designing and instead focused on diagramming. In this chapter we were introduced and taught how to properly diagram different aspects of a building. To do this were were paired into gorups of two and given the choice between five different buildings to study. Once we had studied our building we were to diagram different aspects of each building as well as the site for our next chapter.

Sonasterio Music Studio

The case study we chose for this chapter was the Sonasterio Music Studio. The Sonasterio Music Studio is a music studio built by Joao Diniz, and it is located in Morro Do Chapeu, Brazil. This building was built with concrete and glass as the main materials, the building is somewhat isolated as the nearest town is down the road, but the building itself is placed on a mountain range. These mountains provide cover from the nearby town and hide it from sight.

Detroit Music Center 4

Once chapter four was completed we moved into the final chapter of the semester. This chapter would put all of the research we had compiled from our previous chapters to the test. We were now tasked with digging into the genre of our original artist and turning that into a large scale music studio that would be placed in Detroit. My previous artist was Carlos Santana and he utilized a variety of genres. For this project i decided to use his two most prominent genres that he uses, these beig rock and jazz to portray the bond they hold through juxtaposition.
