It’s finally time for National Pavement Expo 2022 and I just can’t wait for it!

This event is the biggest training track for power sweepers and with Covid-19, we haven’t been able to get together for what seems like FOREVER. NAPSA has been working hard and we have a GREAT training track (see below) to present at NPE along with our other initiatives and benefits. I can’t begin to tell you everything here so register for NPE and come and see. As a NAPSA member you get free and discounted events of nearly $500 so be sure to register as a NAPSA member!

So, when will NPE release the registration?

November 2 is slated as the launch date.

By Karen M. Smith The National Pavement Expo and Conference, canceled in 2021, is back on schedule for February 23 - 25 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. NPE offers a variety of admission fees, from the $1,000 full conference pass at the “Super Saver” rate for those who register before November 6 to the $1,375 full conference pass at the standard rate which applies to those who delay until January 1 to register.

NPE offers exhibitors a range of promotional tools, including email signatures, personalized web banners, and social media images. General images for download are for the 2021 event, so you’ll have to wait for the 2022 images to be posted.

NPE is committed to protecting the health and safety of exhibitors and attendees. From monitoring circumstances to following federal and local health safety guidelines, they may require attendees to wear masks and encourage the use of hand sanitizer in

addition to ordinary safety precautions.

As of this writing, the agenda for 2022 has not yet been updated, however the special events page has (https://nationalpavementexpo.com/ show/special-events/). Although one may expect similar topics and speakers to the 2021 event, there will surely be changes. NAPSA members receive special discounted rates to sweeping track sessions organized by the association as well as three free 90-minute sessions. NAPSA members will also be eligible for a free show floor pass. More information will be coming from NAPSA on how to register using a discount code for NAPSA members.

Speakers, workshop leaders, and presenters will deliver information spanning a variety of topics related to equipment, customer management, human resources, sweeping best practices, and more. If you have valuable information to share that will uplift the industry, NPE will soon begin accepting speaker proposals for the 2023 event. NPE posts speaker guidelines on its website, mainly reminding applicants that sessions are not sales opportunities and that presentation content must be specific to NPE attendees. The NAPSA Program

Every year, NAPSA hosts a program at NPE, complete with presentations, member-specific sessions, and keynote speaker. This 2022 keynote speaker is Traci Brown who specializes in decoding body language.

In her presentation titled “Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire,” Brown reveals the secrets your clients try to hide. By teaching you the lie, fraud, and theft detection skills she’s used to find the truth in billion dollar business deals, crimes, and politics, she will help you learn how to stop fraud, detect deception, and find the truth. These skills can be applied to existing staff (is someone in accounting embezzling?), candidates for hire (did he lie about his resume?), vendors (are they pricegouging?), and clients (is the check really in the mail?).You can even apply these skills at home to get clues as to whether a family member is telling you the truth.

Following Brown’s 9:00 AM keynote speech on Friday, February 25, Guy Gruenberg will deliver a presentation on sales skills:

“Gotcha! Attitude Is Everything in Sales.” Gruenberg is known as “the contractor’s business coach” and is the face of a company by the same name.

He specializes in helping contracting companies develop their sales, leadership, and financial management skills by working with them to figure out what they want from their businesses, determining what exactly they don’t like about their current operations, and formulating strategies for change.

The NAPSA Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday, February 22, and the morning of Wednesday, February 23. Beginning Wednesday afternoon, all NAPSA members are encouraged to register to attend and participate in the event’s program which begins at 1:00 PM in room A03. Josh Ferguson will discuss the Power Sweeping Standard and how to use it. At 3:00 PM on Wednesday, Randy Goruk delivers a presentation on communication strategies. Goruk brings wisdom and practical experience earned over a 26year career with Trus Joist Corporation (now a Weyerhaeuser business) where he was part of a senior leadership team responsible for raising annual revenues up to $1 billion. He brings real life examples and practical insight that

anyone can use to address modern business challenges.

Admission to both presentations on Wednesday afternoon is free when the NAPSA member discount is used.

Following the roundtable discussions on Thursday is a muchanticipated social event: Sweeper’s Night Out. NAPSA will host a party for members from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Southbound, 2433 South Boulevard, Charlotte, North Carolina. Tickets for the NAPSA social event of the year will go on sale soon. n

Self-Driving Sweepers: The Wave of the Future?

By Karen M. Smith We haven’t reached the point at which the public readily accepts autonomous passenger cars, but some companies have already launched their selfdriving power sweepers. Here’s a quick rundown.

Trombia Free by Trombia Technologies On September 29, 2020, The Robot Report announced that Trombia Technologies Oy launched Trombia Free, “the world’s first full-power autonomous sweeper.” According to the report, this global provider of street cleaning machine technology equipped their autonomous sweeper for all weather conditions through advanced algorithms that “absorb data on objects from various sources and to generate millions of illustrations of an object at once” to enable safe and accurate localization.

In addition to potential cost savings by reducing human capital for operation, Trombia claims its all-electrical cleaning devices use less than 15 percent of

the power needed by heavy suction sweeping machines without sacrificing cleaning capability. Trombia envisions the Trombia Free as a replacement for both human sweeper operators and diesel-powered heavy machinery.

In January 2021, Trombia initiated a 12-month commercial pilot program to develop products and model ranges suitable for different applications.

Bucher promotes itself as the first manufacturer of all-electric power sweepers and the first to offer second-generation e-sweepers in series production. The company states, “Autonomous technology for street cleaning can improve productivity in supply operations and optimize road use.”

CityCat 2020ev by Bucher Municipal The all-electrical CityCat 2020ev by Bucher Municipal recently gained autonomous status. The company collaborated with Berlin software manufacturer Enway, which makes self-driving vehicles. The result is a fully autonomous street sweeper approved for public road use by Singapore. The sweeper operates much like a longdistance drone with a human operator manning the controls in a remote location. Singapore’s strict regulations require that a human operator be within the vehicle for safety purposes during

Viggo by Idriverplus China is no stranger to driverless street sweepers. The Viggo by Idriverplus “automatically tracks and avoids obstacles as it cleans. More than 100 units are now in operation at universities, factories, parks, an amusement park, and city streets.”

Idriverlus’ CEO, Dr. Zhang Dezhao, envisions autonomous vehicles as indispensable to the health and wellbeing of urban areas. Unlike Bucher’s model, the Viggo is free from manual operation by virtue of Velodyne’s LiDAR sensors integrated into the vehicle’s technology.

Like military drones, some autonomous street sweepers may be commanded by remote operators.

Urban-Sweeper S2.0 by Autowise.ai Chinese technology competes with itself as startup company Autowise.ai tests its Suzhou driverless power sweeper in major Chinese cities. Test sites range from small, 1- or 2-vehicle projects to fleets covering a wide range of sweepers.

The company estimated needing a total fleet of at least 30 vehicles by the end of 2020.

Collaborating with Boschung, Autowise.ai’s autonomous sweepers incorporate 16-line lidars, video cameras, and mm-wave radars. With 360-degree coverage, the autonomous vehicles know what’s going on all around them.

Autowise.ai states that their technology is the most cost-efficient in the industry and their “efficient sensing data fusion algorithm is adopted to realize data

transmission and synchronization across different types of sensors.”

TADA: Working on It On July 13, 2021, the American Center for Mobility reported a partnership of the Transatlantic Autonomous Driving Alliance (TADA) “to create a network that connects US and German companies, organizations and universities/research institutes with each other around the focus of automated, connected and other emerging vehicle technologies.” Their latest project is an autonomous power sweeper.

TADA envisions a vehicle greater than 7.5 tons and based on a standard chassis with fully automated cleaning, navigating, and driving capabilities.

Prototype models boast over 30 different control units and integrated sensors

that detect weather and road conditions as well as distance, traffic, and other obstacles. Cybersecurity is also being integrated into the technology to prevent malfunction through malicious code.

The Future Is Now We may not be as advanced as the Jetsons, but we’re getting there. Until people levitate and passenger and commuter vehicles fly, there will always be a need for street sweepers.

Street sweeping is a necessity of urban management with high labor costs.

Through the continuing development of technology, you just might be able to expand your fleet’s capacity without expanding your workforce sooner than expected. n

Power Sweeping Standard Under Review

By Karen M. Smith Part of the work in establishing an accredited standard includes regular reviews to ensure the standard remains up to date and is fair and reasonable to all parties affected by it. ANSI calls this a balance of interests. ANSI requires such reviews every five years unless the standard is maintained under the stabilized maintenance option for which the power sweeping standard does not yet qualify. Criteria for the stabilized maintenance option include: 1. The standard addresses mature technology or practices 2. The standard does not concern safety or health-related issues 3. The standard has been reaffirmed at least once 4. At least 10 years have passed since the standard’s approval or last revision 5. The standard is required for use in connection with existing implementations.

The review is performed by a consensus body of 12 people representing contractors, customers/ property managers, and allied industry

partners. In order to facilitate a fair and thorough review, NAPSA has developed a 9-page document that guides the group’s efforts.

The review entails a process of notification, action, feedback, and approval that takes into account explanations of intent, identification of stakeholders, and codified dialogue representing comments and objections.

Conflict that concerns duplication of other standards or within the existing standard incurs “mandatory deliberation of representatives from the relevant stakeholder groups” within a 90-day deadline. Substantive changes in the standard require “listing of the change in Standards Action in order to provide an opportunity for public comment.”

People who are materially invested and adversely affected by the standard may appeal any procedural actions or inaction regarding the standard’s reaffirmation. That, too, entails a codified process which launches further review and judgment.

This strict procedure provides

measurable benchmarks for progress in re-affirmation of the existing standard or approval of a new standard, including management of “canvassees” who comprise the review body.

NAPSA records every step of the reaffirmation or approval process. Such rigorous documentation ensures the absence of shenanigans and confirms performance of all due diligence.

Tedious it might be, but there’s something to be said for a strict, objective process that sweats every detail.

In addition to a review of the actual standard, NAPSA undergoes a review of our processes of standards writing.

Every three years, the American National Standards Institute does a review of the process. NAPSA is currently mid review for this standard.

This is primarily an administrative review where ANSI auditors receive access to all files and procedures. They will review and respond with findings at the end of their audit. This is another way to create a fair and equitable balance with the standard. n

Supporting Employees Through Grief

By Karen M. Smith No one lives forever. Inevitably it comes to pass that an employee dies or an employee’s loved one dies.

COVID-19 brought that harsh reality into disturbing focus with many workers losing family and friends to the disease. Although we try to separate our personal and work lives, grief isn’t so easily managed or contained.

Federal law does not mandate companies award employees time off for bereavement. However, the emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical ramifications of loss and

grief can and do affect workplace productivity, whether the bereaved is a factory worker or a corporate CEO. “Grief-related losses cost U.S. companies as much as $75 billion annually,” so this is not just an HR problem. How do you support a grieving employee while maintaining business operations?

Make contact and stay in touch.

Although many supervisors find this uncomfortable, the personal touch shows compassion. Phone calls and personal visits mean a lot to the bereaved employee who may feel adrift and confused. Contact the employee as soon as you learn about his or her loss and offer your condolences.Your employee may want you to notify his or her coworkers, but respect the employee’s desire for confidentiality and confirm what details the employee wants to divulge to coworkers.

Know the company’s bereavement policy and review it with the employee.

If there was ever a reason for a corporate policy to be flexible, this is it.

Most bereavement policies specify paid leave for two to four days and only for immediate family members. “Although this may give employees time to deal with the practical demands of a death, it is unlikely to be enough for them to process their loss.” This is unrealistic with the variety of nontraditional, blended families in society. If your company has thus far been fortunate not to implement a bereavement policy, it’s time to review and update it.

Convey funeral and/or memorial service information to coworkers.

Coworkers often become close friends who will want to support their grieving colleagues in their time of sorrow. Again, exercise compassion and allow them to take the time needed to attend funeral services, memorial services, etc. Management’s presence at the service also strikes a compassionate

tone with the grieving employee.

Further group acknowledgement may also be warranted, such as a bouquet and/or sympathy card from the department or the entire staff.

Consider the financial burden. To be blunt, funerals are expensive, leveling a double-punch of grief and financial hardship on many workers. Unpaid time off beyond the usual two to four days of official bereavement leave to grieve is a gift, but the lack of income compounds the financial hit of funeral expenses. Consider monetary gifts or establishing an employee assistance fund that defray those expenses related to funerals and other hardships, including medical expenses, housing costs, food, utilities, etc.

Not every company can or will emulate Google, the tech giant’s bereavement policy “grants the significant other of any employee who passes away 50% of his or her salary for a decade.” Facebook and MasterCard offer their employees a month of paid bereavement leave. For those companies that can’t make such sacrifices, flexibility may come to the rescue. One example is asking other staff members to donate days of paid time off to support their grieving colleague Another is to encourage the grieving employee to get a physician’s note prescribing additional time off, which then may be attributed to family medical leave.

Continue support at work. The default approach of silence is “to spare the office from grief, leaving bereaved employees alone for a few days and then hoping they’ll return expediently to work” does more harm than good.

This goes with the assumption that work is a good distraction from grief.

Work can distract from grief, but grief bleeds through and distraction cannot prevent a person from going through the process of grieving. Although

Death comes to everyone.When an employee suffers the loss of a loved one, it behooves a company to exercise compassion and offer support. Photo courtesy of Marco Rickhoff on Unsplash extending a leave of absence–paid or not–to the grieving employee has negative financial consequences, the financial consequences of a disengaged employee unable to focus on his or her work are even greater.

Workplace support need not only be in terms of assigning all or portions of the grieving employee’s work to other workers. It may require some creative thinking. In Sabina Nawaz’s article, “Grief Management: How to Support an Employee Who Is Coping with Grief,” she relates how one worker’s colleagues helped: One roup I’m aware of placed a cooler on their co-worker’s doorstep (after checking with them) and a team member dropped off a meal every Saturday. This provided the family with a dependable supply of meals over a period of time (rather than an avalanche of food at first that spoiled in the fridge), a one-step way to manage logistics, and a tiny bit of predictability in the midst of death-disrupted life.

Practical support need not end there. Loss brings disorganization

and formerly organized people may suddenly find themselves wondering how to manage the simplest things.

Encourage your grieving employee’s coworkers to volunteer in practical ways: grocery shopping, walking the dog, babysitting, housework, etc. If your employee needs more structured support, suggest social services or a private company that offers at-home assistance.

Understand that “grief ebbs and flows. The initial, intense sorrow and debilitation usually attenuate over the year following a loss, but grief doesn’t then unfold in a neat, linear manner.” A combination of sympathy, compassionate adjustment, and practical support will ease your bereaved employee’s return to work and full productivity.Your employee will be grateful and the company’s bottom line won’t suffer as much.
