Chronicle A Message from our Chair of Volunteers, Lewis Heuermann

JULY 2012 Naples, Italy

What an amazing month! I am continuously inspired by all of the amazing dedication our Naples American Red Cross community shows with every event. Take a look at the photos from the USO Block Party and Festa Americana events. These dedicated volunteers gave more than expected and had a wonderful time in the process. As we approach the middle of summer and the heat index rises -- how are you preparing to stay safe? Check out our tips on staying cool in the summer heat. Once you've cooled off stop by the Volunteer Needs section on page 2, and see if you find a new inspiration within our community.

Attention Volunteers: Please remember to record your hours every month and report them to the Red Cross office! Stay Safe in the Summer Heat: (an excerpt from

How can I prepare?         

Listen to local weather forecasts and stay aware of upcoming temperature changes. The heat index is the temperature the body feels when the effects of heat and humidity are combined. Exposure to direct sunlight can increase the heat index by as much as 15° F. Discuss heat safety precautions with members of your household. Have a plan for wherever you spend time— home, work and school—and prepare for the possibility of power outages. Check the contents of your emergency preparedness kit in case a power outage occurs. Know those in your neighborhood who are elderly, young, sick or overweight. They are more likely to become victims of excessive heat and may need help. If you do not have air conditioning, choose places you could go to for relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day (schools, libraries, theaters, malls). Be aware that people living in urban areas may be at greater risk from the effects of a prolonged heat wave than are people living in rural areas. Get trained in first aid to learn how to treat heat-related emergencies. Ensure that your animals’ needs for water and shade are met. Go to to find out about ways to stay "cool" during the summer heat!
