“Understanding our own body is the key to learning what to wear and how to do it. There is a huge difference between what we think is right vs. what we actually project based on how our body’s shape and personal style are connected.” – Cover: Rachel Mayer | Photograhy: Diego Rios Production coordinator: Mark Ninomiya | Production assistant team: Jim Murphy, Ed Werfelman, Gerard Russo | Style & Accessories: Nando Medina | Models: Rachel Mayers, Yessica Sandoval and Alana Suarez. to learning what to wear and how to do it As a human beings that we all are, it is no an easy task to criticize our own body. But certainly it is a necessary task, to learn about our figure. Statistics have shown that 96% of women have a negative body impression, not seeing them as beautiful. Certainly a high percentage of women are being extremely critical about themselves. This result may be based on different aspects and some of them are insecurity and/or low self esteem. Such a negative aspect is nothing else that an opportunity that we have of learning about our body shape, tone skin, and hair, a pre-requisite before start building our style. That knowledge will become a tool to understand how to dress it to. For years I have been advising different type of women who used to dress completely wrong due to the lack of knowledge about their body features.

How I can learn about my body? Know your body and avoid guessing

To build your style and create a signature-identity, knowing your body and avoid guessing comes first. Let’s start with the basic steps and understand what they mean. Use a measuring-tape and a good friend to help you getting the right info of those difficult areas. Keep in mind the more accurate is the information; the better your style will be built.

Bust: standing up and totally straight, wrap the measuring tape

around your back and across the fullest part of your breasts to the middle of them. Pull the measuring tape as taut as you can without changing the shape of your breasts. Avoid squishing; otherwise you will be far from the right goal. Hips: holding the measuring-tape at one hip, below your hipbone, at the fullest part of your hip. Then, keeping the tape flat, wrap it around the largest part of your butt, your other hip, and bring it back to the meeting point. Write down the information showed in the measuring-tape. Shoulders: this is the hardest measurement to do by yourself, so you really should ask someone to help. Place the measuring-tape at the tip of one shoulder and wrap it all the way around you like a shawl until it meets back at the same shoulder; the tape should skim the top of the shoulders closely, it almost slips off. This is the widest circumference of your shoulders. Waist: wrap the measuring-tape around your torso, at the smallest part of your natural waist in a natural breathing and corporal posture. It should wrap flat around your back without buckling and meet just above your belly button. Write down the information showed in the measuring-tape Once you get the information after measured yourself [shoulders, bust, waist and hips], use those numbers to find out your silhouette shape. That will be the first part of this process, before move forward with tone skin and hair.

Your waist is less than 25% smaller than your shoulder or bust measurements. For example, if your shoulders measure 36 inches, your waist will be 27 inches or more. 2. Inverted Triangle: when your shoulders or bust are larger than your hips. Your shoulder or bust measurements are more than 5% bigger than your hip measurement. For example, if your shoulders measure 36 inches, your hips will be 34 1/4 inches [34.25”] or probably smaller. Building your style and own identity

TURN ST YLE INTO IDENTITY feeling confortable into your own skin We all should know that there is great power in fashion style; that is why celebrities spend thousand of dollars when coming to red carpet and other events. Some experts in phycology believe in the personal power that we should be harnessing to express our sense of self and communicate it to the world, building our personal “brand/identity” along the way. Dressing to impress is not just for the day we have an interview, a big presentation or a date. “Fashion is a very powerful social tool, and one that every person should reflect on and use to their advantage”, said Anna Akbari, Visual Sociology Ph.D., from NYU. She, as well as Nando Medina, both thinks that stylists and personal branding is not just for celebrities—and surprisingly, everybody can actually save money revamping their wardrobes.

The connection between fashion and power The connection between fashion and power is not about a particular garment, outfit or a specific designer. Rather, Powerful fashion is about cultivating a balance between expressing individuality [standing out, looking different and getting noticed], demonstrating group belonging [expressing confidence, showing you are part of the group]. Definitely you want your sense of self to be communicated, but you must also be mindful of your audience, season, and current situation. Usually people who say they dress for themselves are doing themselves a disservice—you definitely do notwant to come across as intimidating or disrespectful through your visual self-expression. It is not about ignoring personal preferences, but rather visually acknowledging that you also exist within a structured social environment into a balance, which is necessary. Building your style and own identity

tips about how to turn style into your personal identity: 1. Seek Inspiration, not imitation: jot down the names of your favorite fashion style icons, doing a little research via Pinterest, Google, or Instagram to gather inspiration from their look. Pulling different types of inspiration from several sources is a great way to figure out what you like and dislike. Remember, seek for inspirations, do not try to fit in somebody else skin, you want to be original and organic in terms of look.

Build your style to embrace your identity. Empowering your life using fashion, as a tool to navigate its potential challenges will help to build your own style-signature. Many individuals who consider themselves “fashion agnostic”, claim that they never think about what they are wearing. Which experts like Dr. Akbaru founds too bad—because everyone else is paying attention, you are not invisible as you may think. Building your style in fashion is the key to express your individuality within the context of assumed dress codes appropriated through different circumstances or event. If you cannot communicate who you are as a brand/identity and the type of person who would identify with your core values and aesthetic, then you will not be able to make a statement to them.

How to turn style into identity? The impact of a personal identity goes far beyond making a good first impression; great style is also about approaching each day with great confidence, and the ability to feel legitimately beautiful in what you are wearing. For that reason, Nando Medina wants to share here seven

2. Clean-Up and Clean-Out: take a good and deep look at your closet, including the pieces you most like. Toss what you have not worn in the last year to start fresh. Then you can begin rebuilding and refining your wardrobe with a style that truly reflects where you are in your life and career; remember always what you want to project as a personal image. 3. Shop Smarter: learn how to experiment with the latest fashion trends, the smart way—hunt for trendy deals discount at stores like TJ Maxx and Forever 21 for example; pay good attention to aspects such as hems, test the zippers, etc. 4. Take your Goals and Lifestyle Into Consideration: a perfect wardrobe should not only represent your vision and creativity, but also be tailored to your lifestyle. Consider always the persona you want to project to the world. You want your style to reflect your personality, making sense in your field of work and/ or group, your overall lifestyle, the city you live in and most important, aligned with your long-term goals. Are you trying to make a statement as an individual? Are you trying to make it in a particular industry? Do you want to get better job? 5. Always confidence over dress size/look: always be conscious of your figure, remember, you don’t 5

want to imitate. Since no one can see what the size tag reads on the inside of your dress, then, let’s avoid focusing on fitting into the smallest size possible. Avoid the smallest-size mindset, because a number should not make you confident—how you feel in your own skin does. And when you feel your best, you stand taller, fashionable, smile wider, and people will notice for sure. If you have confidence, knowing and understanding how you look like when wearing what you put-on, you can make anything to look good. Wear what makes you feel confident into the right parameters, knowing your body-shape always. 6. Stock-Up on Accessories: definitely accessories are, without a doubt, the easiest way to pull any look together regardless of the vibe you want to achieve or project. You can update jeans and a white t-shirt with a bold NM’s necklace or pair layered, delicate fashion jewelry with a dress for a sexier feel. A cool ear cuff or stacked rings can give you an instant edge, and pearls can make you look sophisticated. Add a patterned or solid color scarf, or pull out a bright clutch to add more of your personality. 7. Trust Your Instincts and Be Authentic: definitely something that makes you feels confident and beautiful will never out of style. The single most important thing when developing your style is to be true to yourself. Do not focus on the size or the designer label; this will ended sending away your creativity. Keep experimenting with different patterns, textures, accessories, and shoes. It all boils down to feeling good, and most important, in your own skin—your style should reflect and celebrate your life, your individuality, your goals, and personality.

When wearing heels in a casual style, probably with tight jeans or leggings, an accessory that add even more power to your look will be a jewelry ankle bracelet, a

delicate and thin chain for an extra sparkle touch. 4. Leggings + Jewelry Chain Waist and Ankle Bracelet: these are considered basically another layer of skin. a key formula to build your signature look Let’s start with the well-known quote from Coco Chanel, “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” That followed with Nando Medina’s, “Seek for inspirations, not imitations” will be a good way to this topic about the right formula to create your signature-look, based on Style + Attitude. Fashion forward shapes, textures, colors, and style to keep your look just the way you want it. We all would like to have the budget for a designer wardrobe but instead we will need to use the right tools and sense about getting the look right. Finding the right style, colorful patterns designs to give your look confidence is a good way to start, after have learned about your body features. Then attitude will deliver flair to any outfit; pair your outfit with accessories to build the perfect look, while maximizing style, comfort, and of course, attitude. As Shawn Ashmore said, “Style is a reflection of your attitude and your personality”, what you wear says a lot about you, how you wear it is what make the difference and your own statement.

A good way to start this process is thinking of yourself as a blank canvas to portrait the outfit and accessories you will wear. From that view, check how do you look like, what mood that outfit and accessories bring to you, what is that portrait projecting about you. You can keep adjusting your portrait to different variations. Some of the main parameters to keep in mind when building your identity are: – Colors: always checking those that go with your body complexion, skin tone, type of occasion/event, season/time, and very important, your goals. One great example of how colors are used in personal goals is RED; used to project confidence. Some others want to project self-assured without being too bold — that is when white or a light color tones combined with dark accent colors is appropriate, having in mind always seasons. That is the case

of Tiffany for example, light blue + chocolate brown. – Context and Goals: imaging yourself like dressing a mannequin, having in mind the scenario you will be part of it and what is the role you will play within that scenario, what is your goal while attending that event, how you want to be perceived? – “Framing” Yourself: since you are building your own style and identity/ brand, your outfit and accessories should showcase you projecting out the best of you. Don’t forget, “perception turns into reality for those out there.” We all need to know that “Fashion” and “Style” are not synonymous of each other, fashion is what is trendy out there, but style is how you ownership that trendy aspect making it look yours even when somebody else may have the same outfit and accessories; that is where attitude play the big role.

Attitude is a settled way of thinking and feeling, reflecting our behavior. That is why what we wear whether we are aware of it or not, is a key part of our style and identity — simply because when we look good, we feel good and when we feel good, we look good, a reciprocate formula. Confidence is always attractive for either-gender, situation and business field.
