As a student of urban design I am not only fascinated by telling stories visually, but I am also curious about every special story of a place itself. This approach can be seen in my photography and visualisations.

6 – STUDY PROJECT – SCHIEDAMSEWEG
This assignment t was part of ‘Functional Ambiance’, a project series at the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst in spring 2019.
The Schiedamseweg is one of the oldest city axes in the district Bospolder/Tussendijk connecting Schiedam with the center of Rotterdam. First buildings being built in early 20th century, I got distroyed in WWII and rebuilt shortly after. Nowadays it is one of the most vibrant, but also violant streets in Rotterdam West.
The original name of the street is in contrast to the name of the studio not functional at all. More a barrier seperating the functions of the districts, missing zebra paths so residents cross the street informaly.
The redesign works with the simple idea to make the whole street a shared space. With a traffic axis in the middle being shared with bikes and trams, and an iregular pattern detWerms the function of the street. Sometimes the zebra becomes a urban garden for residents, sometimes it is the extention of the terasses from the cafe right at the street. The design first analysis the spatial needs for already existing facilities, such as the bouwkeet - a place where people from the neighbourhood can attend workshops and have at-

eliers to be creative, and the big market square - and then connecting these important places to a continues public space.
Section showing who the new design of the street works. In the middle is a traffic axis being shared by cyclists and trams. The rest of the pavement has enough space for functions like terasses and public plints
An illustrative analysis made in the first lession of this project. It shows both fascination and problems of the street. The street is actively used by the neighbourhood, especially in the plints public functions such as a barbershop is situated. But formal crossings are missing, so the residents cross the street informaly.

This designs concentrate on the renovation and re-activation of bank buildings from the post-war era. By giving it new functions and changing its main architecture only with smart and incremental interventions, the originally design remains - but adapts to today’s needs for public functions.
Idea of the design is appreciating the steady traditionalistic architecture, but skimming its overwhelming presence. First renovation already opened up the ceiling with a glass roof for natural lightening of the building. This idea is going to be taken further by opening the first floor of the backside and replacing it with a glass facade. Same is done with the front of the building, which gets a glassy entrance

on the front. This results in an elegant see-through basement, that allows visual connections to the back and brightens up the object. Further the upper floors gets topped-up and-and a half stories. Modest, lightweight and easily designed.
The first stories can be used for public functions, so as an exhibition hall and forum for students from the nearby Willem de Koning Academie. Upper floors maintain both flexible workspaces and space for smaller offices, to meet current demand offices spaces in Rotterdam. The public space in front of the building invites for rest and leisure, by widening the sidewalk and adding benches and greening.

Small map of the new design. The amount of cars lanes have been reduced to two lanes per direction, so there is enough space for cyclist - even a small bike highway.
Image of the new facade. The windows have being lowered and integrated into the public space. The plint becomes part of the street furniture.
16 – MASTERPLANNING – VIANNEY LOCATIE
Vianneylocatie is continued from a former project being done by MUST in 2006, Breehorn. A plot has been reserved being used for parking facilities, which now should be developed for apartments. The task is to create a building that is giving something back to the neighbourhood. Is it a public plint that has facilities like a kindergarden or shops, or a rooftop garden that is opened to the nearby school. The project is currently in process - these drawings are showing previous designs that haven’t been chosen to develop further.

The Volendammerweg is about to become an important green axis connecting Amsterdam-Noord to the nearby municipality Waterland.
Pavillion in het groen Stedelijk landmark
One of the design proposals. Two towers are stacked on a green rooftop. The plint is going to be public.
Public space - the neighbourhood is connected by a various small public spaces. Private gardens on the inside of the row houses are facing a community space, that goes linear through the area.
Must Stedebouw is known for creating atlases. In the previous years I had the possibility follow the process of creating the content. From research and collecting data in GIS, to creating visual content in Illustrator. It all has started with the Kempenatlas in 2016, and currently we are working on projects such as atlas Flevoland, Twente and Zwolle.
The Kempenatlas has been made from Spring 2016, and got published in summer the year after. It tries to determine the culture, history and chances for development of a region that does not really have borders, but people still feel belonging to: The Kempen area. It’s somewhere between Antwerpen and Mechelen, North Belgium but also including parts of southern Netherlands. In our research we tried to find similarities and differences between the region, illustrating them and collecting parts of the history of an area that has been called Kempen already for 400 years.

36 – INFOGRAPHICS – DIY VIETNAM
DIY Vietnam is a series of small illustrations based on observations being made during a study visit in Hanoi in 2014, Three years later, in collaboration with Gast Prof. Dr. Cyrus Zahiri,
former docent and dean of the department of urban design at the University of Kassel we memorised the analysis of the informal uses of public space in Kim Lien, Hanoi for a future publication. The illustration are part of a series made by former participants of the excursion and will be published as booklet in 2020.

For each scenario we also created iconic images showing future street designs. The, axonometrics first were prepared in SketchUp - and later edited in Illustrator.
The gedempte burgwal becomes a fietsstraat, where bikes ride only . The sidewalks get wider, and have benches for pedestrians to sit.
40 – ANIMATION – FIETSLAND
For the analysis we have been ourselves in Den Haag during the afternoon rush hour, filming the chaos and obstacles cyclists have to face everyday. With the collected film material I cut a short video, and added later in After Effects some motion images - moving illustrations. For this process I started designing storyboards by hand, preparing the files in Illustrator and finally making small animations in Adobe After Effects.
