1’-1’mockup of the structure

An extended family from Mumbai asked for a weekend house in the countryside which would provide them with nature, fresh air and a certain amount of privacy. The house intends to give the family the perfect balance between privacy and security, in a site in which due to the harsh monsson and the dangers of the existing fauna, requires to set a def ined perimeter of the outside and inside nature, with the intention to create a both safe contained and open plan house.

The house is read as a monastery, a sanctuary in which the bedrooms are encloused spaces around a small courtyard providing intimacy and the living spaces are connected by exterior verandas that interact with a larger courtyard and exterior.

This living semi-exterior promenade is meant to be the space which is more used by the family as it creates a natural cross ventilated breeze, under a shade and a weather which makes it propiscius to be outside all year long. { nagaon 2012 }

Different scale models are made to explore the relationship between the constructed and the topography , to sense the balance between exterior, covered, and solid. This balance is key to the project as it tries to convay a sense of intimacy while interacting with the surroundings

A HOUSE ON THE HILLSIDE

The clients for this weekend house in the outskirts of Mumbai were very clear, they asked for a three generation house that seeked to mantain a level of privacy, in where the siblings were to use the outside space and the parents a more controled inner space. This entrepeneur family also wanted a large garden that could be viewble from the different spaces of the house.

As the site sits on a hill, the architecture approach relays on a semi-buried architecture which adapts to the existing topography to merge with the landscape granting at the same time a natural thermal inertia in sulation to all of the living spaces which promotes a softer temperature variation throughout the year.

By emphazising the exisiting promenades that are scouring the hillside, a set of pathways are projected as the communicating arms of the more closed inner spaces. The central group of trees that grow on the center of the site are highlited by enclosing them in a central courtyard which embraces the entrance. The other characteristical trees wich are encounterd are also taken in mind by creating a sequence of small courts which serve the more open spaces. The swimming pool and its public space is set at the top of the site granting a view towards the mountain and its monsson cascades and exposing a view towards the sea over the roof levels of below.

To the left are at sequence of images that show the prcoess of experimentaion of the site, by making rammed earth models from the soil of the site to always have in mind that whatever is cut must then be placed, resulting in an almost zero impact on the site.

This rural farm from begginings of the XX century is now less of a farm and more of summer residence for an extended family. Therefore new comodities were required such a swimming pool, a summer pavilion and a new roof for one of the barns to create a multiuse space which could, in a future be rented out fot events. As for the swimming pool it felt unecessary to design a new one as there was a preexisting pond which could be segregated into a smaller area. On the other hand the roof of one of the barns had collapsed the year before. Being this barn of a considerate size it was decided to make it open plan and of a timber structure, planning that if in a future this space were to be rented, the timber could be left visible and still fulfill the fire requirements.

{ ALFONSO SANTAMARIA ARCHITECTS } Project leader -Surveying, Basic ans Final design plans, Contruction detailing

Barcelona-Gerona 2010-2011

Working with Alfonso Santamaria architecs granted me the opportunity to develop all the phases of refurbishing heritage buildings to a new use . This case is from an ends of the XIX century building located in the central promenade (rambla) of the medieval city of Girona. The four last floors were to be transformed into small contained apartments for intermitental rent. Surveying, legal permits, loans and basic design plans were made and currently the final design permits are being processed to soon start with construction works.

The site is located near the village of Vilafranca del Penedes, 60km south west of Barcelona, on a region known by its wines. The “Mas de Pontons estate is composed of 30ha of vineyard plus 25 more which are projected. The estate includes an existing stone fortified country house dated from the XVII-XVIII century which sits on top of a small hill overlooking the vineyard plantation.

After a thorough analysis of the site it is concluded that the implantation of the new winery shall lay close to the existing house, boosting its monumentality by making it serve as base without any excessive ornament and serving as a connection promenande (using the the proposed green roofs) between the vineyard and the existing house, solving the small cliff that now exists between them. A proposal that intends to merge with at surroundings at the same time that it encourages the qualities of the existing architecture.

MERGING LANDSCAPE WITH SITE INTEGRATION, USE AND SUSTAINABILIT Y

24_mdelas/0113

The strategy of implantation was the following; Once the different stages of the wine elaboration were identif ied, there is a decision to separate each volume so they can satisfy independently the different higrothermic conditions. These volumes are then implanted into the site, adapting themselves to the topography, creating a sequence of terraces. The peripheral activities are then introduced and annexed to the wine production spaces to serve the administration and visitors. Punctual openings are located on to the different walls of the building to facilitate the wine processing, always following the gravitational direction. Finally, small longitudinal patios are created to lighten the spaces indirectly.

06_BUSINESS INCUBATOR Poble Nou, Barcelona { PUBLIC BULDING LABS } Barcelona Tech 2008

The business incubator proposes to recover the old industrial scheme of the place which was formerly composed of textile

plants. This is achieved by proposing an industrial edification based on zenital illumination which exetends on ground; keeping a low height. An architecture that respects and promotes the neighborhoods character which tends to be forgotten by the excesivelly fast and individualistic emerging housing plans that are being promoted throughout the area. Located between two urban schemes, the industrial quarter of Poble Nou and the ortogonal grid of Cerda’s urban plan; bordering a cementery and running alongside postwar housing towers, the plot is in the link of transformation.

28_mdelas/0113

The main construction elements of the incubator are the pretensed concrete pieces which are assembled beforehand. These constitute the beams which grant zenital ilumination and the possibility of inserting a ventilation circuit in its core.

insertion of housing in a consolidated city center .

The proposal seeks the respect of the surroundings and the re covery of significative elements such as the mediterranean folding window shutters which provide efficient luminic control.

The main intention is to create new urban public spaces according to the appropiate scale of the neigborhood, to do so, two new squares are created introducing spaces of leisure and circulation letting the Boqueria food marquet breathe. A proposal that is conceived as the result of the public space, done by starting to build from the empty. Barcelona Tech, Barcelona 2007

The project responds to the ortogonal surroundings set by Cerdas plan and reinforced by Ferrater’s housing complex. The back facades follow the rigid perimeter of the site, creating an unitary night zone which is repeated throughout each apartment. On the other hand, the front facade(SE) ,the one facing the sea, is flexible and articulated, permitting rich quality space living rooms.

flexibility gives a unique character to each apartment

After learning rhinoscript and its possibilities, one encounters Grasshopper. A user-friendly interface that lets one create parametric projects on an easier context. During the year of self-investigation of the program I acquired the basic knowledge to develop simple projects and understrand its posibilities and functioning. Furtheron and interested in its capabilities of expansion I developed different projects which involved live feeding from an Arduino board connected to different sensors by means of the Firefly grasshopper plugin

With it I created simple 3d models that reacted and interact to exterior stimuli sucha as, temperature, motor movements, or tactile reactions.
