Advanced Architectural Design Tube station and Cafe

The project is heavily influenced by the movies ‘Pather panchali’ and ‘Dr. Strangelove or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb.’ The earthy locations in ‘Pather Panchali’ transform into a space after an ‘explosion’, where the crater houses an underground tubestation and a cafe in a scrunched metal piece.

Process Form

The shell like form was inspired by the Baroque architecture of Rome. It was derived from an architectural drawing of a painting, by using the cutting and folding technique to give it a 3 dimensional form.

Function The form follows a script written around a character ‘Durga’ from the movie ‘Pather panchali’ and mutates into a space which is an underground tubestation and Ace Cafe. (Ace Cafe is an iconic Bikers cafe). It is a frozen moment in time - a frozen explosion. The bomb is a metaphor for the current cultural phenomen. The space is in the process of mutation as globalisation and urbanization transforms the environment and traditional architectural form another parameter being ‘time’. Hence the trasfiguration of everyday spaces.

Rubber cladding on the ‘Lattice shell’ structure forms the roof of the crater (tubestation). The steel structure inspired by the structures of the telescopes holds the cafe in the air. The cafe is such that it looks like a scrunched brass sheet where the floor itself continues to fold and form walls

The roof of the cafe is straw weaved on a thin metal frame with bimetallic coil details which twists and turns with the change in temprature.

Museum is a place for acquiring knowledge by visual admiration of things, hence the whole site is design as a museum by providing various viewing spaces within the site and the site elements as exhibits

The design elements guide cicitors through the site through changing densities. The pathways act as galleries for viewing the exhibits (site elements) and are also met with interesting intervals for standing and admiration of the exhibits

Walkway to first floor

Glass and water amplify the properties of light hence both are used in combination. The glass prism disperses the visitors to ground floor or first floor and acts as a lighting element in the night

Permanent exhibition and fair ground Site - With an area of 2,01,706 sq.mt. located in an industrial area of jaipur. It was used for temporary exhibition of stones which runs for 4-5 days. The objective was to design a permanent exhibition and fair ground serving 4000 visitors at a time. Solution - Easy movement pattern - Focal point connecting two major zones of either side - Zone1 consists of permament exhibition halls and temporary exhibition space - Zone2 consists of administrative block, auditorium and OAT.

Focal point designed as a recreation space consisting of restaurants and open landscaped spaces. The site topography was changed bringing the focal point the at a higher level

Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre, Stanford hall estate redevelopment Location - Stanford Hall Estate, County of Nottinghamshire Project Brief - A rehabilitation centre of injured military personnel. DNRC would provide a 21st version of Headley Court which is a specialist rehabilitation unit. Some of the services provided would include Complex Trauma Unit for sophisticated trauma rehabilitation, Neurological centre(Gymnasium, physiotherapy, Vocal therapy etc), and ‘Back to Life’ houses and bunglows for those seriously injured and leaving the services.

University Arms Hotel

Project Brief - Reviving of Cambridge’s oldest hotel that holds a special place in the history of Cambridge. It has always been a destination for the visitors to cambridge, sitting on one of the key gateways to the city. The transformation of the hotel aims at giving Cambridge a much needed best in class hotel facilities with new hotel rooms, restaurant, bar, gym, and conference facilities.
