Literature is a cornerstone of modern human civilization. It has allowed us a perspective on religion, politics, culture, economics, psychology, science and society for hundreds of thousands of years. It began largely as a educative and informative medium before gaining entertainment value as society progressed. It is also considered my many as an artform in its own right; with the written/spoken word being the medium.

LITERARY ARTS

e v i t c subje

Art can be basely defined as the product and/or process of an arrangement of elements to evoke emotion/reaction—be it from the artist himself or the viewer. At the same time, art is notorious for being undefined and subjective. Sometimes it depends on engagement and interactivity, sometimes it works best when observed from a distance. Anything can be art, whether it’s literature, music, film, illustration, photography, sculpture etc. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Case Studies

Most smaller festivals have a unique selling point (USP)—something that diffrentiates them from other festivals. A small town like Linton may not have the same amount of influence and resources as the bigger cities, thus it’s more plausible to utilise something that unique to Linton to make the experience more “authentically Linton” and more potential to attract attendees.

REGIONAL COMMUNITIES

ommunities Small Town, Big Art

The following projects were all funded by the Small Transformations Program—a government initiative that pushes small towns to indulge in creative projects for the betterment of the community with help from professionals. The program offers $35,000 as part of the govenrment’s $20 million regional arts package and is open only to towns with a population of 2000 or less, showing us that there is no shortage of opportunity for a small town like Linton.

INSPIRED BY BIRDS Neerim South, Victoria

The small town of Neerim South (population: 608) used art as a medium to instill meaning, identity and lasting connections amongst the community. The local artists and makers were all involved in the design and fabrication of the works—giving birth to workshops, school initiatives and competitions that has embedded creative expression into the town’s DNA.

With this new space, the town hopes to attract more people, encourage creative collaborations and also engage the local youth with the farmers.

GIRGARRE REVIVAL: THE SOUND OF OUR SPIRIT RISING Dookie, Victoria
