THIS RESEARCH PROPOSES THE USE OF BIOMASS FROM FILAMENTOUS ALGAE AS A LIGHTWEIGHT, HYGROSCOPIC AND BIO-RECEPTIVE REINFORCEMENT FOR CEMENTITIOUS COMPOSITES, TO DERIVE MATERIALLY-EFFICIENT FIBROUS CONSTRUCTS. THE PROPOSAL EMERGES FROM COMPUTATIONAL FORM-FINDING TECHNIQUES OF MULTI-AGENT ALGORITHMIC STRATEGIES, THAT EMBEDS AND REDISTRIBUTES MATTER IN A NETWORK OF SELF-ORGANISATIONAL TECTONIC STRUCTURES.

THE FINAL PROTOTYPES ARE PRESENTED AS A CATALOGUE OF DECONTEXTUALIZED ARCHITECTURAL PRIMITIVES, BASED ON THE ABSTRACTION OF FUNDAMENTAL GEOMETRICAL ELEMENTS FOR MULTIPLE PROGRAMMATIC POSSIBILITES: THE VERTICALITY, THE SURFACE AND THE VESSEL. SUCH ELEMENTS ARE DESIGNED AND CONCEIVED THROUGH DIFFERENT COMPUTATIONAL AND FABRICATION METHODS: THE SURFACES AND VERTICALITY BY TRADITIONAL CASTING AND THE VESSEL THROUGH NON-GRAVITATIONAL PRINTING. THIS NOVEL WAY OF ARTICULATED MATERIALITY ALLOWS THE EXTRUSION OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL CONTINUOUS AND POROUS ELEMENTS, THAT ULTIMATELY CONCEIVES A BIOPOIETIC SCAFFOLD CAPABLE OF HOSTING ITS OWN CRYPTOGAMIC ECOSYSTEM. ALGAE[CRETE] ACTS AS AN ARTIFICIAL ECOLOGY THAT TRIGGERS THE RESURGENCE OF MARINE LIFE IN PLACES THAT REQUIRES IT, AND STRATEGICALLY RESPONDS TO THE PERTINENCE OF IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY OF HIGHLY-POLLUTED URBANOSPHERES.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION LIVING SCREENS IS A RESEARCH PROJECT THAT STUDIES THE POSSIBILITIES OF USING A LIVING ORGANISM, PHYSARUM POLYCEPHALUM (SLIME MOULD), AS A SMART MATERIAL EMBEDDED IN A PANEL FOR INTERIOR SPACES WHICH IS ACTIVELY RESPONSIVE AND CONSTANTLY CHANGES ACCORDING TO THE USERS PARAMETERS.

THE MATERIAL SYSTEM CONSIST OF A SERIES OF TRANSPARENT LAYERS THAT COMPOSE THE PANEL AND CREATES A SUITABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE SLIME MOULD TO GROW. THE PANEL IS DESIGNED TO FEED THE SLIME MOULD SO IT DENSIFIES ITS NATURAL PATTERNS, WORKING AS A LIVING WALL THAT FILTERS LIGHT IN SPACE. THE SYSTEM ENGAGES DIFFERENT CUSTOMIZATIONS SUCH AS: OPACITY, TRANSLUCENCY, TRANSPARENCY, PIGMENTATION AND SHADOWS PROJECTION. THE SLIME MOULD'S GROWTH IS CONTROLLED BY THE NUTRIENT'S SOURCE WHICH COME DIRECTLY FROM A FOOD-DISTRIBUTOR MACHINE. SAID MACHINE DEPLOYS THE FOOD IN SPECIFIC PLATFORMS INSIDE THE PANEL, ALLOWING THE PATTERNS IN EACH LAYER TO BE RECIPROCAL THUS HAVING DIFFERENT DENSITIES.

C U R R E N T ST I M U L AT I O N

THE PANEL ALSO INCLUDES A HUMIDIFIER DISPENSER THAT CONTROLS THE LEVELS OF HUMIDITY INSIDE IT; THE SLIME MOULD REQUIRES AN AIR-TIGHT ENVIRONMENT CAPABLE OF MAINTAINING THE HUMIDITY AND PROTECTING IT AGAINST OUTSIDE AGENTS THAT COULD ALTER ITS DEVELOPMENT. THE RESULT IS A DYNAMIC WALL THAT NOT ONLY CHANGES IN TIME, ALTERING THE INTERIOR SPACE TRHOUGH COLOR AND OPACITY BUT ALSO AFFECTS THE MOOD AND EXPERIENCE OF THE SPECTATOR.

THIS PROJECT AIMS TO CAPTURE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE CITY AND THE CHANGING LIVES OF THE INDIVIDUALS, BY TRANSFORMING THEIR ROUTINE INTO AN ATEMPORAL PERFORMANCE. THE INSTALLATION GOES BEYOND A SIMPLE COLOR INTERVENTION; FROM A SINGLE OR MULTIPLE USER INTERACTION, TO ENTIRELY REPRESENT THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE IMMEDIATE SOCIETY AS A SHIFTING AND INTRICATE SYSTEM. THE PROJECT USES THE LANDSCAPE OF THE COLOR SPECTRUM AND SOLAR BASED TECHNOLOGIES TO CREATE VISUALIZATIONS OF LIFE AS IT UNFOLDS. THE INTERACTIONS WITH THIS DEVICE IS CONVERTED FROM USER INPUT AND REPRESENTED VIRTUALLY ONTO THE CITY AS REAL TIME ARTWORK.

THE LIGHT COMPUTER DEVICE IS AN INTERACTIVE PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION DESIGNED FOR EL POBLENOU NEIGHBORHOOD IN BARCELONA, SPAIN. THE APPARATUS IS SUSPENDED IN THE AIR, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREETS AND INTERSECTIONS BETWEEN BLOCKS. IT IS A SOLAR INSTRUMENT THAT UTILIZE CLEAR SUN LIGHT TO PROJECT INFORMATION ON THE STREETS.

THE DEVICE IS RESPONSIVE BY MEANS OF INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED PANELS OR "PUNCH CARDS" TO DELIVER MESSAGES THROUGH COLOR IN THE PERCEPTION OF MORSE CODE. THE CODE IS THEN REPRESENTED VIRTUALLY INTO THE CITY, AND THE CITY IS THEN REPRESENTED AS DYNAMIC ART WORK INSTALLATION. THE PROJECTIONS BECOME A MANIPULATION OF THE SOLAR SPECTRUM WITH SPECIFIC DATA THAT HIGHLIGHTS EVENTS, ACTIONS AND INTERACTIONS OF THE PEOPLE WITHIN THE REGION. THIS VIRTUAL PAINTING SHIFTS FROM ABSTRACT TO ICONIC PATTERNS WHICH USERS CAN EXPLORE TO THE STRETCH OF TEHIR SCOPE.
