DIJON, FR

© 2017 Infoterra Ltd & Bluesky The site is located on the side of the old city walls being, within the site Clifford’s Tower is one of the most important vestige and landmark of the norman period. Situated at the southern edge of the medievel city centre, between the River Foss and Ouse, significant element of the everyday movements of the city, as well as it is beloved by locals and touristically attractive. Clifford’s Tower is identical with York as a long ago established and properous regional centre, although the setting of the historic monument is not compatible with this recognition. The adjacent civic area of the Castle Museum with the Eye of York suffers the same treatment, though they carry significant opportunity as local importance and touristic benefits.

City of York Historic core and the medievel remnant city walls on aerial image, strongly linked to latter city pattern and embedded into latter urban pattern.

Former moat Clifford’s Tower on motte Remnant historic element

The enviromental infrastructure (green, blue & grey) of York has an approximate good balance. The mediavel core has its own green corridor formed by the buffer zone of the city walls and historic parks and gardens adjacent to it. The site is one of the biggest open space inside the city walls, however it is highly fragmented and underutilised compare to it’s significance. The area has been historically used for administrative, public or civic purposes, however the current wedged temporary use as a car parking area is devaluate the space and create a hard-to-use and unattractive island between famous local attractions.

Remains of City Walls City Gates The demolished Castle and Clifford’s Tower formed a central complex surrounded by a moat directed from the River Foss. The fortification of the city has been complemented by te City Walls.

Between 2014 and 2015 I worked as a trainee and later as a part-time employee on several different projects of the practice. Working with the team included office background works (e.g. technical drawings, TÜV Rheinland safety & quality drawings) as well as on the installation site works (handcrafted painting decoration, woodworks). The Workshop of Ilona Malom is well known as a pathfinder and creative practice, among they activities can be found willow architectur, that helped me to get know as much as possible about construction with the living material.
