BATTLE OF THE LANDMARKS 2008 AND EARILER LIKE THE REST OF NEW YORK CITY, QUEENS IS FILLED WITH HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES. SOME OF THE HOMES THAT WERE ONCE RESIDENCIES TO AMERICAN IDOLS ARE BOUGHT, TORN DOWN AND BUILT OVER BECAUSE THEY ARENT MADE OFFICIAL LANDMARKS BY THE LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COMMISSION.

BATTLE OF THE LANDMARKS FEBUARY 1, 2011 DUE TO THE EFFORTS OF OF DEDICATED INDIVIDUALS AND POPULAR VOTES, ADDISLEIGH PARK GAINED LANDMARK STATUS FOR NEARLY 500 HOMES IN THE SMALL HISTORIC ENCLAVE.


WHITE FLIGHT IN ADDISLEIGH PARK (1940s-1950s) WHITE FLIGHT: THE MOVE OF WHITE CITY-DWELLERS TO THE SUBURBS TO ESCAPE THE INFLUX OF MINORITIES. IN THE LATE 40s AND EARLY 50s WHITE SUBURBAN RESIDENTS BEGAN LEAVING THE AFFLUENT NEIGHBORHOOD BUILT FOR THEM WHEN THEY REALIZED THAT WELL OFF AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE MOVING IN AND BUYING THE HOMES. LEGENDS LIKE FATS WALLER FIRST MOVED TO THE AREA AS EARLY AS THE 30s.


NEXT STOP: ST. ALBANS MUSICIANS, ATHLETES AND CELEBRITIES WERE NOT THE ONLY AFRICAN AMERICANS THAT LIVED IN ADDISLEIGH. THE OPULENCE ATTRACTED THE LIKES OF SUCCESSFUL LAWYERS, DOCTORS AND ENGINEERS. THE ST. ALBANS LIRR STATION BECAME A EXPRESS RIDE FROM THE APPARTMENTS OF HARLEM TO THE TUDOR HOMES OF QUEENS.


CHECK IT OUT • ADDISLEIGH PARK IS A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD AND HAS MORE THAN JUST NICE HOMES. THERE ARE BEAUTIFUL CHURCHES THAT HOLD AMAZING SERVICES ON SUNDAY AND PROVIDE AMAZING SERVICES FOR THE COMMUNITY EVERY OTHER DAY OF THE WEEK. THERE IS A FRESH BIKE LANE ON LINDEN BLVD THAT RUNS THROUGH ADDISLEIGH. BIKING THROUGH THE AREA IN THE SPRING AND SUMMER ARE POPULAR ACTIVITIES. THERE ARE LANDMARKS AND SITES THAT WOULD MAKE GREAT INSTAGRAM PICTURES. FINALLY, THERE IS THE BEAUTIFUL NATURE THAT THE LAND WAS DEVELOPED ON THAT SHOWS ALL THROUGHOUT THE ENCLAVE. ENJOY THE NEIGHBORHOOD!
