SOLUS | THE ARCHITECTURE OF SOLITUDE SENIOR PROJECT We live in a fast- paced world with constant demands on our time; with our bodies continually ahead of our minds. We need to remind ourselves of the gift that we have, Solitude. It is possible to slow down the hands of time if we give ourselves the time and space to do so. The mind is largest playground we have. A world with no boundaries, limits, or expectations, and the most powerful and unseen weapon we have. Everyone needs time alone, everyone needs solitude. We cannot grow at a soul level without solitude. The soul cannot surface if we fail to distance ourselves from the noise of the world. When we come to view being alone as an opportunity, as a gift, we can transform The concept behind solus is to merge the architecture languages moments of solitude into moments of awareness. of rigidity and organic style. This idea arose from the contrast one experiences in life between the built environment and nature. The project is located in Al Jaddaf, Dubai, alongside the creek. This site also highlights the contrast between the city skyline and nature. The linear form symbolizes the path to enlightenment and self contemplation whilst the organic form portrays the freedom that every human aims to achieve. In our lives today, we seem to have lost all singularity that comes with the human being and this project aims to revive this concept. Elements such as pods, contemplation spaces, and experiential journeys throughout the project act as a catalyst for achieving singularity through architecture. Following a minimalistic design approach, the structure expresses solitude and the opportunities of enlightenment that it brings.

CONCEPT PROPOSALS SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT:

SOLUS | THE ARCHITECTURE OF SOLITUDE

KIRIGAMI AND ARCHITECTURE The first proposal was inspired by a Japanese technique called “Kirigami”. Kirigami is a variation of origami and it involves the three- dimensional reproduction of architecture and monuments, on various scales, using cut-out and folded paper. In architectural design, Kirigami is used to create intricate patterns which play with light and shadow. I chose to use Kirigami as a technique in order to help me achieve the light and shadow effects. Light plays a role in guiding one’s eyes to a certain direction- in my case this would be natural elements. Whilst shadows may play a role in creating dark spaces where people could dwell in solitude throughout the building and site.

SOCIETY VS. NATURE The concept is inspired from the fusion of both nature’s organic form and the city’s urban orthogonal skyline . The aim is to merge both languages to highlight the importance of harmony in our world today. The balance of nature and architecture is symbolically similar to the balance one should achieve with solitude and one’s daily life. The topographical form blends with the existing surrounding to seamlessly integrate the architecture within its current nature. This aspect aids in achieving a sense of unity and oneness with their surrounding.

PURITY AND ORDER The idea of mind wondering beyond this world served as the main inspiration behind this concept. The aim is to frame the sky through the integration of pillars that vary in scale and density. The sky symbolizes solitude; a space with no boundaries or limits where one can fully experience solitude. The ancient Greeks had always used columns for both structure and symbol of order. It is this order that society enforces upon our lives today that could appear to hinder ones path to solitude. The pillars in this concept in contrast to history not only serve as a horizontal gateway but also a vertical gateway. The pillars are designed to allow for minimal deflection movements creating a hypnotic feel and experience for the visors. Through the variety and density of the pillars, architectural space is generated. In addition, the pillars also aid in the guiding the visitors through the spaces. Furthermore, cylindrical pure forms cap some of the pillars to highlight certain spaces of importance and spaces of the utmost solitude.

ECOSHELTER The aim of this project was to design a sustainable shelter alongside the new canal. My concept is mainly derived from the study of the wind. Allowing the form to follow an organic layout to maximize the wind flow. The buildings are designed as ramps to provide an experience for the visitors as they circulate through the structure according to the spaces. The design also introduces a water body which dissects through the project to provide both aesthetics as well as energy for the structure. Cross Ventilation Diagram Located alongside Jumeriah beach, the design of the Eco Lab formed through the study of natural elements such as the sun and wind flow on site. The structure is designed to allow cross ventilation through various areas of the building to enhance the experience throughout the structure.

A HOUSE IN IRUS (BUILDING INFOMATION MODELLING- REVIT) The main concept of the main structure is the reference to the plot’s location, which is on the highest hill of the neighborhood. The scenery includes uninterrupted view of the Mediterranean and the entire Gush Dan area. Therefore, the house was designed so that it opens to the view. As a consequence, the external sitting area was designed as a direct continuation of the internal space, and beyond that, the swimming pool with the structure’s contour lines. (archdaily) The prominent internal/ external relations in the design is expressed by pulling the roof beyond the structure’s contour, creating shade in the external sitting area. An analysis of the sun’s rays during the day determined the angles of the round light openings in the concrete ceiling, that serves as a built pergola. Each one of the openings is in a different angle, in order to maximize the shading in the sitting area. Discovery/ concealing: an additional architectural concept that characterizes Dan and Hila Israelevits Architects is the design that is partially concealed, while the house is revealed as the time goes by, while walking into the space.

JUMEIRAH ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE (GROUP WORK) The goal of this project was to design a site that would attract young Emiratis in Dubai keeping in mind their cultural values and traditions, we also designed our project to conserve the local community’s privacy however also to maintain their luxurious lifestyles. The main objectives for this project was to create an enviroment suitable for young Emirati families to interact together as a comunity , and to attract young local entrepreneurs by giving them the opportunity to open their own businesses such as ; restaurants, cafes and retail shops. Also, to create sustainable awareness by using technologies such as kinetic flooring and self harvesting using privately accessed terraces. The design concept was derived from geometric masses of diffrent sizes to create a modular form. And by adding and subtracting the masses which would therefore help us provide comfortable living spaces for our targeted audience.
