Introduction Bison Chapter NRHH Ice Worker’s Song

“Born of cold and winter air And mountain rain combining This icy force both foul and fair Has a frozen heart worth mining” The first meeting of the 2014-2015 Bison Chapter NRHH Executive board was filled with discussion on what the upcoming year would look like. The Bison Chapter has a strong history of service to NDSU as well as the Fargo-Moorhead community that we needed to maintain. The board set expectations for themselves, and brainstormed goals for their positions, as well as for the chapter as a whole. In the next few weeks, our goals would be put to action as we with body members to promote NRHH to the students and the NDSU campus.

The growth of the bison chapter of NRHH in the past few years challenged the executive board to work hard. Our recognition has been expanding throughout campus, and more students around campus understand what NRHH is. Our membership grows with the addition of 3 honorary members each year, and is constantly changing as members graduate and new members are inducted. This year we strived to keep members excited for NRHH and the service we provide to the community.

As an honorary organization, we value academic achievement, and have this year we have worked to strengthen the scholastics of our members by creating a new executive board position, the Scholastics chair. The leaders in our organization are committed to service and recognition. Our chapter hosts many annual service events such as Hump day hot coco, tailgating pop tab collection, Project Linus, and Trash collection, along with participating in other service events regularly. Recognition is ever-present, through OTMs, competitions between the hall governments, and staff member appreciation. Every one of our 32 members showcases these values in their own way, and when everyone works together our magic envelops our community.

Purpose and goals

Before School started in August, the 2014-2015 NRHH executive board was busy brainstorming how to make this year fantastic.

Our Purpose:

The NRHH Executive Board strives to lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and honesty while focusing on leadership, scholarship, recognition and service throughout our community.

Challenges & goals Challenge: Poor quality of OTMs-­‐ NDSU has steadily increased its OTM numbers, however many of the OTMs submitted are under 100 words.

Goal: promote OTMs to Hall Governments and incorporate OTM education so that authors will be aware of what makes a good OTM Challenge: Low attendance at NRHH service projects-­‐ It is hard to find a time where 32 college students can volunteer together.

Goal: Provide at least one service project per month, so that members will be able to attend at least 1 volunteering event a semester.

Challenge: Students involved in NRHH get caught up in their extra-­‐curricular activities and lose track of their academics.

Goal: Have an educational component at meetings every month and hold 1 academic focus program per semester.

Challenge: The students living in the residence halls have little to no knowledge about what NRHH is.

Goal: Develop a mentoring program that inspires young leaders to continue their leadership on our campus.

Member G oals

At the first meeting of 2015, members were invited to write their goals on a football, and then tape that football on the “goalposts” to show them off. Below are a few of the goals we received. This was also the first night that the NRHH time capsule was implemented.

Members were asked to write their advice for future members and place them in the capsule. This advice will be given to our new members once they are inducted. Ç Balance academics, work, and social life Ç Become involved with more organizations on campus Ç More outreach within the community Ç More involvement with the hall governments Ç More volunteering Ç Connect with other NRHH Chapters Ç Make a positive difference on campus Ç Promote OTMs through a YouTube video

Having members write their own goals for the upcoming semester helps the NRHH Executive board plan upcoming events, ensuring that what we do reflects the wants of the members. The NRHH executive board has already started working to help members fulfill these goals. NRHH has partnered with a local nonprofit organization, HOPE Inc, to give members the ability to serve the community during NRHH meetings as well as at HOPE Inc. events. The recognition committee is currently writing a script for an OTM promotion video. NRHH is also planning more events this semester to give members more opportunities to participate.

Do you want to build a Leader?

Introduction to the Exec Board Elsa built Olaf to be a friend for her and Ana. The exec board of NRHH is there to support the body in the same way Olaf supported Ana. To introduce our Exec board we asked them: What are your steps in building a leader on the NDSU campus?

Building a leader is easier than most people think. Everyone has the potential to be a great leader, but sometimes, they don’t know how to embrace their leadership. Believing in others and planting the seed of leadership is the first step. Once they believe in themselves you have to continue to believe in them, sometimes leaders will get discouraged and need to be given the tools to continue on, just as how Elsa gave Olaf his own personal snow flurry. Throughout the leadership process, the leader will need support, At times, supporting them means giving of yourself, after all a leader is always worth melting for.

I feel that leadership comes from within but sometimes people need a little help reaching their leadership potential. I encourage them to try to seek leadership within their own halls or organizations that they are involved. I also encourage them to take control of their own lives and be a leader in their classes and personal lives. This may mean answering questions in class or going to their professors office hours. Everyone can be a leader in their own unique ways.

My steps: Setting an example by holding open doors, talking to people who appear lost to give directions and willing to help random people around campus carrying things from cars.

Administrative Director

There are different ideas on how to build a leader, many may want to lead however, one has to learn a bit about leading and the different types of leaders that there are. Sometimes we learn about leading without even knowing it! One of the steps is to guide those around who are stepping into leadership roles; whether they have experience leading or not because each leadership role can be a little different; or those who are wanting to lead on their floors, in hall gov., in class projects, club and organizations. When building a leader on NDSU campus I always remember what I learned in 4-­‐H, that there are many types of leaders and with just one type or the other we wouldn't get a whole lot done. There are those who take the lead and lead the charge, those who delegate, those who make sure everyone's voice is heard, those who plan based on the direction of the 'leader', and those who follow making sure all of the details have not been missed. So when teaching Kelsey Adolphson others to lead we have to remind ourselves that no matter our role it is an important part of being a leader and building leaders by those we work with. A step for building a leader is to let others lead while you sit back and Programming, Events, guide them along the process; helping them to get back up if they stumble and fall. One step to building a and Banquet Chair leader on NDSU campus is to lead by example, what more simple and basic of a step can one have because if others follow your lead, it can make a world of difference.

What I have learn developing into a leader is that no-­‐one leads the same way. NO matter what my first step in being a leader is being a leader worth following. There are so many leaders out there but sometimes it is really hard to find a leader with great intentions. Next being a community leader, someone who is ready to give back and find enjoyment from helping others. Building a community and a supportive community system should be an important and prioritized for any leaders and should include working towards a social change. Then it is important to be passionate about what you want to do, being a leader you make an impact through your ripple effect.

I lead by running across campus like a valiant pungent reindeer queen. I like to lead by example and share my experiences with others. I feel it is important to enable or encourage others to find what makes them unique and “own it.” Like Elsa she tries to hide from what makes her stand out and as she grows she realizes her gift and it’s because she learned how to use her talent she became an effective leader.

And Introducing, Our Newest Executive The Scholastics Chair Member

The scholastics chair position came about after several body members inquired about the academic portion of NRHH. For our body members, it was unclear how academics fit into NRHH. Our current academic standards require a member to have at least a 2.5gpa, but academics are then trusted to the member. In an attempt to focus NRHH members more on scholastics, the Scholastics chair position was created, and our last meeting in December the addition was approved. The scholastics chair position is outlined below:

The Scholastics Chair shall:

A. Organize and facilitate monthly programs that promote academic success

B. Update the body on academic success tips, and important academic deadlines coming up

C. Ensure that all active members meet the minimum academic requirements as stated in the constitution

D. Help members with academic success on an individual basis

E. Recognize members who have gone above and beyond on achieving academic success

F. Build relationships with hall governments to promote academic success in the halls and help facilitate

programs focused on academic achievement.

On January 13th, Rachel Giemza was voted in as the first Scholastics chair for Bison Chapter NRHH. We asked Rachel to share with us

some of her ideas for this semester:

I would like to hold group study sessions within NRHH and branch out to hold a study program for the different Residence Halls on campus to

get the NRHH name out on campus and to help promote scholastics on campus. I would also like to work with the various committees to integrate academics into the different facets of NRHH, recognition of good grades or test scores of the members with a treat of some sort at the next meeting, volunteering tutoring other students on campus or at the public schools around the community, getting a break by volunteering at the humane society or another animal related organization which allows the students to relieve some stress with pets and help out a local organization.

Q. What are your steps in building a leader on the NDSU campus?

A. The first step in building a leader on the NDSU campus is for that person to get involved in any club, organization, sport that they are passionate about. It could be chemistry club, video game club, a fraternity, student government or

their hall government. As long as that person is passionate about it, all they need to do at first is get in on the ground

level and the next is to stick with it. Being on the entry level gives the leader a better feel for how the group operates,

what events and activities that they want to do and that gives fuel for ideas for the group to do. The next step is to take opportunity that fits best for that person and then progress up from there. Even just helping to create events for the any organization and working with the group, that person will become a stronger leader. By starting out small, taking advice and learning from the experiences of the other leaders, the leader will grow to be the best they can be.

The Bison Chapter of NRHH represents student-­‐leaders in all types of majors across several colleges within NDSU. Each hall on our campus is represented through our members. Our commitment to our university is just part of what makes our organization so dynamic.

Selection

The Selection process for Bison Chapter NRHH is a four-­‐step process.

1. Nomination Current members of NRHH have the ability to nominate other students who they believe would be a good addition to Bison Chapter NRHH. Nominations are also open to hall directors and Residence life faculty. Spring 2015 selection nominations were accepted online through a Google form.

3. Interview Upon submitting an application, prospective members must sign up for an interview time. At the Spring 2015 Selection prospective members were interviewed according to the values of NRHH. The interviewee was later critiqued on how they responded, and the interviewers carefully marked their comments from the interview. The question sheet given to the interviewers is included in the appendix.

2. Application After being nominated, prospective members are given a letter explaining what NRHH is, a congratulations certificate, and a link to the electronic application. If the prospective member is interested in joining, they then must complete the electronic application. The perspective members are invited to a social with current NRHH members, where they have the opportunity to get to know the current membership and ask members any questions they might have. The application used for our 2015 spring selection is included in the appendix.

4. Selection After all interviews are complete, Names are removed and the NRHH body reads through all applications and interview comments before attending the selection night meeting. During the meeting, each applicant s discussed, and eventually voted on.

This year we implemented an electronic application process. Our nominees were given the link to the online application and their responses were emailed to the Vice President and Selection coordinator. In addition to general questions (name, major, email, class standing, GPA, etc.) the application included these questions:

• Have you lived in the an NDSU residence hall for at least to semesters (including this semester) • Please take the time to answer the following questions completely and concisely. How or why did you get involved in your hall, residence life or other organizations?

• What qualities set you apart, which would include you in the top 1% of leaders?

• How do you plan to contribute to NRHH? • What does above and beyond mean to you? Give an example of how you have personally demonstrated your definition?

• Can you attend meetings Monday nights at 8:30?

• Do you have any questions for us?

Induction

This year was the first year our chapter has hosted an induction ceremony. Our newly selected members joined the executives for a casual introduction to NRHH. NRHH member and MACURH Director Sam Wagner gave a short presentation on MACURH and NACURH, the Executive board introduced themselves and their positions, new members were then presented with their pins, and the night ended with cake and social time. This event gave new members the opportunity to get their questions answered, and begin to feel welcome and comfortable within our chapter.

The new NRHH members are welcomed by the executive board and several NRHH members.

Social Media

In an effort to keep members up to date, NRHH has implemented many forms of social media.

In June of 2014, the Bison Chapter of NRHH changed from a private Facebook group to a Facebook page. This change allowed members to get the same information while simultaneously allowing other students from NDSU as well as other schools to see what Bison Chapter NRHH is up to.

Shutterfly-­‐ With so many activities throughout the year, hundreds of pictures are taken. In an effort to share photos easily, a Shutterfly share site was created. Members were given the link to the site, which is password protected.

Once they have gained access, members can upload their photos, or download the photos that have been uploaded. @NDSUBisonNRHH is the official Twitter handle of Bison Chapter NRHH. The Twitter is available to spread the word for NRHH events as well as NDSU RHA and Residence Life events. The Twitter also became a powerful tool for recognition of NRHH members. !

Pinterest-­‐ Bison Chapter NRHH started a Pinterest page to gather ideas for programming, community service, and academic success.

NDSUBisonNRHH is conveniently also the Instagram account name. The Instagram account allows Bison Chapter to share pictures of events and create a timeline of events as well.

Comment Card-­‐ Bison Chapter NRHH created an anonymous survey so that members could voice any concerns they had without worrying about offending other members.

Bison Chapter NRHH has also started putting out a monthly newsletter so that members and alumni have the ability to stay up to date on what NRHH is doing, and plans for the future.

The newsletter is distributed as a .pdf through social media as well as through the mail.

October 2014

Leadership Training Day !

Thank you to everyone who helped with Leadership Training Day. We had over eighty hall government members join us for a day filled with activities!

Participants were welcomed in the Century Theater and introduced to the executive boards of RHA and NRHH. Groups then rotated through five sessions, gathering knowledge on OTMs, Professionalism, Parley Pro, Programming, and Leadership. Students were then reunited with their halls to take part in team building activities. The day ended with a pep talk on leadership from Shiloh (RHA President), Amanda (NRHH President), and Kid president.

Leadership Training Day

NDSU Bison NRHH hosts a yearly event to train the new hall government members into their new leadership roles. NRHH’s Administrative Director, Catey LaPatka, organized the entire event. Catey gave every NRHH and RHA executive member a specific presentation topic and they had 25 minutes to present. Students were educated in Parliamentary Procedure, Professionalism, Leadership, Programming and advertising, as well as OTMs. The students who attended quickly became more comfortable with their positions in their halls and on campus.

Melting from Come Chill with us and Hay Ride

Olaf likes to have fun, and so does Bison NRHH! We wanted to take the time to bond and introduce leaders on campus to the NRHH Bison Chapter. It was a blast and gave our old members time to bond with the new members of NRHH.

Being a student leader isn’t always about business, which is why the Bison Chapter of NRHH annually puts on Come Chill With Us! This year, played Dance Party, Jeopardy, and a community service project -­‐ Cards for Soldiers; What a great time to relax the week before finals kicked off! Food always seems to warm up the hearts of any leader and that’s why there was lots of it there! In all, NRHH members and students from the halls accounted for over 50 attendees.

Hay Ride Yoo-­‐whoo don’t forget about the big fall blow-­‐out with this years Hay ride! The Hay Ride brought RHA and NRHH together for a night of fun. At this event campfire stories were told, s'mores were made and then quickly ate, we also had a moonlit Hay ride with our “Sven-­‐like” draft horses. Uff Da’ what a beautiful night.

Mentoring Program

The Diamond Shining Mentoring Program was developed to give NRHH members a one-­‐on-­‐one interaction with Hall Government members.

What is the Mentoring Program?

The program pairs NRHH members with RHA members who are looking for educational advice, career guidance, and life lessons. NRHH members will work to support and guide RHA students through their college experience. The goals of the NRHH mentoring program are to: • Create lasting relationships between student leaders • Challenge the mentee and the mentor to confront and overcome personal, academic, and professional challenges • Mentors will strive to help mentees establish a stronger sense of self-­‐esteem and confidence as they continue their pursuit for enhanced knowledge and higher education

Maintain Regular Contact: Meet at least once a month to catch up

Mentors draw on their real-­‐world experience to give students advice about making the right choices in school, getting ahead in their careers and developing social skills.

They serve as confidence boosters as well as role models.

Budget

RHA allocates enough funds to ensure NRHH starts every academic year with $10,000. This money is then used to benefit the residence hall students, NDSU campus, and the surrounding community through service. Our 2014-­‐2015 budget was broken down as follows:

The PEB budget funds the end of the year recognition banquet. The banquet recognizes hall governments, RHA members, and NRHH members and provides a time to celebrate the past year.

The PEB budget also supports various bonding activities throughout the year.

The Induction/Membership funds are used to purchase NRHH pins, and welcome packages for our new members, along with funding the induction ceremony.

MACURH/No Frills budget funds the NRHH president’s travel to conferences. NRHH members must apply through RHA to attend MACURH.

The promotions budget helps NRHH get their name out to the public. This funds tee-­‐shirts, buttons, and any advertising.

Bit of a Fixer up’er Community Service

The NDSU NRHH Chapter competed side-­‐by-­‐side with other campus organizations to make the NDSU campus a better place to live. Many of these events also helped to benefit the Department of Residence Life and further their mission statement of, “supporting students by providing a vibrant, healthy place to live and learn.”

Linus Blankets: NDSU NRHH loves volunteering for Project Linus. This year NRHH has turned over $300 of fleece into 18 blankets for children in need of the comfort their own blanket provides. On December 7th, 2014 NRHH partnered service and scholastics and put on a Linus blanket making program the Sunday before Dead week. At this event healthy snacks were provided as well as a quiet place to prepare for exams. When students wanted to take a break from studying, they had the opportunity to cut and tie Linus blankets. The event was a success and the NRHH Team will certainly be working with Project Linus again.

Relay for Life: NRHH members have participated in Relay for Life for several years now. This year NRHH has teamed up with RHA and other residence life leaders to create a dedicated relay team. The group will walk the track of NDSU’s wellness center from 6pm on April 17th until 6am on April 18th. Our team will participate in events throughout the night to continue raising funds. Some of these events include: cake decorating, soda-­‐pop ring toss and even a Mr. Relay competition. Last years Mr. Relay winner (pictured right) was a member of the NRHH team. He raised over $80 in less than 5 minutes. All proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society. Relay was a great way for NRHH and other campus clubs and organizations to stand side-­‐by-­‐ side with our chapter in the fight against cancer.

Kick off Leaders: Many NRHH members

volunteer to be kick-­‐off leaders. These leaders are dedicated to helping first-­‐year students start off their first week of college on the right foot. They are present at all of the welcome week events and recruit students from within the halls to join them. They also participate in opening floor meetings and with many opening week procedures.

Move in Day: Move-­‐in day is a service that

provides students with helping hands to assist with carrying in their possessions on move-­‐in day. Fridges, microwaves, suitcases, bookcases, and chairs are just some of the many items that volunteers, such as NRHH members, help to carry into the residence halls on opening day. This service is a much appreciated time saver to those helping students move in and is a great show of the Department of Residence Life’s service. (Pictured left). commitment to customer

Pop Tab Collection: The NRHH Team worked with the NDSU Football team to collect Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald house. NRHH Team members distributed pop tab boxes to the regular tailgaters towards the beginning of the football season. Later on in the season the team walked around the Tailgate area with a wagon collection the pop tabs. The NRHH Team empowered the NDSU fans to help raise money for a good cause, and the fans proved their support was for their school as a whole and not just their football team.

Trash

collection:

To thank the hardworking custodial staff, NRHH members organized a trash collection program. NRHH members split into multiple groups and emptied the trash rooms in all twelve of NDSU’s residence halls. The NRHH members also left a thank you note for the custodians along with a breakfast snack and juice so they could enjoy their unexpected break time.

Cards

for Soldiers: During downtime at NRHH meetings, cardstock paper, stickers, and markers are passed around so that members can make cards for soldiers and veterans. This is an easy task to complete while listening to officer updates or waiting for committees to finish meeting. (Pictured left)

Service Plunge: Recognizing that Martin Luther King Day is a day that students are allowed the day off of to give back many of our members participated in the NDSU Service Plunge. This year members took 4 hours out of their day to volunteer at a local non-­‐ profit called Hope Inc. Members helped to address over 1,300 letters to supporters, sort through outgoing mail, and fold a pamphlet for future distribution. The event also forged a relationship between NRHH and Hope Inc. the members who helped at the service plunge offered to continue working with Hope Inc., Members are going to fold pamphlet’s during meetings and help stuff and address envelopes when needed. Night Breakfast: Late Night Breakfast occurs at Late

Bell Ringing: NRHH members volunteered their

time on December 13th to bell ring for the Salvation Army. Members enjoyed their time out in the cold by wishing happy holidays, choreographing dances, and singing festive songs like “Do you want to build a snowman?” and “Let it Go”. Members were repeatedly complimented on their determination and perseverance in the freezing cold. (Pictured Left)

This December over 1,100 students congregated at the Residence Dining Center to take a break from studying for their final exams and enjoy French toast, cinnamon rolls, and sizzling bacon. NRHH members contribute by serving meals, cleaning tables, and washing dishes. The event is always a huge success and is a great service to the residence hall students. (Pictured below).

THON: THON is a 8 hour dance marathon with all

Hump Day Hot Coco: The NDSU NRHH

proceeds donated to the Children’s Miracle Network. NRHH sent a team to dance the night away at THON ND. The event, which brought together multiple groups from around campus, raised thousands of dollars that were donated to the Children's Miracle Network. Many of the children who would benefit from the money made appearances at the event, where they got to walk through a cheering crowd to tell their story. The children’s moral was raised by the event, and the NRHH team members enjoyed being a part of an event focused on the kids. (Pictured right)

Team rose from bed bright and early on December 10th 2014. It was the Wednesday of Dead week, and NRHH was going to support the NDSU student body as they prepared for a rigorous finals week. At 7:30AM NRHH set up a table at a popular intersection on campus and distributed hot coffee and hot coco to the early morning passersby. With joyous cheers of “good luck on your finals!” and “Have a great day!”

Madison Carnival: Bison Chapter NRHH has formed a close bond with local school Madison Elementary. For the second year in a row NRHH members, set up a carnival for the students while their parents attended parent teacher conferences. NRHH brought fruit snacks, animal crackers, suckers, juice boxes and other snacks in addition to a plethora of activities. Though the children were nervous at first, soon they were having a ball playing tag, twister, basketball, getting their faces painted, and coloring with the NRHH members. The children enjoyed the night so much, parents spent extra time getting to know their teachers and watching their kids play. By the end of the evening, the children left with sugar fueled smiles and the parents left thankful for provided childcare.

Yunker Farms: In the weeks before Halloween, NDSU NRHH volunteered at a local children’s museum. It was the day of the museum's Halloween party, and the NRHH team donning their costumes to work crowd control, hang out with the children, and lend their eyes to make sure no one got hurt.

expand their academic focus not only across the NDSU campus but also into the Fargo/Moorhead Community. NRHH members decided to collect box tops from our residence halls and donate them to Madison Elementary School. NRHH placed milk carton collection bins in each residence hall along with posters promoting box tops collection. Within a few weeks, word had spread and people were suggesting more locations for collection bins.

Love is an Open Door Recognition

OTMs

We might not all finish each other’s sandwiches, but love is an open door on campus with OTM’s. This gives our campus community a way to recognize each other for the hard work and effort during the year. Our NRHH uses OTMs as their main recognition and OTM’s has had great effort put forth this year through different events like NRHH OTM punch Cards and the OTM Cup Competition between campus hall governments including March Madness 2015 competition between Residence Halls on campus.

In February 2015, member Amanda Lee (pictured above) submitted her 101st OTM. Amanda began writing OTMs in 2012 and her passion for them has continued to grow.

Every member of the NRHH body is required to write at least 1 OTM a semester. However, Many members submit OTMs every month. We are constantly educating members on how to write quality OTMs which has resulted in 8 regionally winning OTMs and 1 NACURH winning OTM since August 2014.

NRHH member Shiloh Susag is the author of a NACURH winning OTM from September 2014. Shiloh’s hard work and encouragement not only encouraged NRHH, RHA, and the NDSU community but provided love to our campus after a loss of a student. Our campus community is great at not only writing about the great things that happen on campus, but at making our community members feel that their is not going unnoticed.

OTMmys

The afternoon of February 22nd 2015 was a monumental day for Bison Chapter NRHH. It was the day of the first annual OTMmys. The OTMmys is an award show modeled after the Emmys. It highlights the achievements of OTM authors and honorees. OTMs submitted during the year were read by NRHH members who then had the opportunity to nominate OTMs for different award categories. Some of the categories included were: Most Entertaining OTM, Outstanding First Year Student, Most Inspiring OTM, Randomly Awesome OTM, and Funniest OTM. All OTMmy winners received a trophy and gift bag as a thank you. The event even brought in a ‘celebrity guest’ speaker, NDSU’s VP of Student Affairs, Dr. Tim Alvarez.

Shiloh Susag is presented with the Diamond Value Award. This is the most prestigious award given at the OTMmys. The Diamond Value award is presented to an OTM that highlights all the values of NRHH.

NRHH understands that not everyone prefers writing OTM’s so our executive team provides alternative Recognition activities that were successful for our NRHH body. There have been a plethora of activities that NRHH had this past year, including: thank-­‐you cards for faculty in the NDSU community, Residence-­‐life recognition day, a traveling diamond award, and of course our hashtag that represent briefs from OTM’s submission so the twittersphere can recognize the great work of the NDSU community #RecognitionNDSU. NRHH members created signs and hung them around campus for Dining services appreciation day.

Dining services staff were also presented with special thank-­‐you key chains.

RA’s and Complex managers were presented with a thank you treat bag and a poster on their door for their appreciation day.

NRHH hosted Collegiate Cakes, an event celebrating academics. All residence hall students were invited.

Students enjoyed cake and conversation, and Dean’s List students were honored during the ceremony.

To recognize the hard work NRHH members dedicate towards their schoolwork, a proud mom fridge hangs in the NRHH office.

Members can stop by and write their accomplishments on the fridge, which is shared on social media every Thursday.

RHA/NRHH Relations

At North Dakota State University, RHA and NRHH are extraordinarily close. The President of NRHH serves as an executive officer in RHA. As a member of the RHA executive board, the NRHH president is expected to be present at all RHA body meetings, executive meetings, and to support RHA in the projects they take on throughout the year.

The NRHH and RHA executive celebrated the holiday season together.

RHA and NRHH members enjoy getting to know each other at our October Hayride.

Having the NRHH President on the RHA executive board allows for easy communication between the two groups. The RHA body members (approximately 80% freshman) are immediately made aware of what NRHH is. They also hear about NRHH happenings, and are invited to participate in many NRHH sponsored service projects. RHA body members are then able to inform their hall governments about NRHH as well.

MACURH/NACURH Involvement

MACURH- 5 of the 23 delegates NDSU sent to MACURH were active NRHH Members. The members enjoyed the weekend in Lawrence Kansas and were able to bond with the 18 other delegates, many of whom will be nominated for NRHH next year. Two NRHH members presented programs at MACURH, and many delegates attended programs that increased their interest in NRHH.

NACURH-­‐ 15 of the 24 member NACURH 2014 delegation are NRHH members. 2 NRHH members presented programs at NACURH, 1 was in the top 50 programs. At NACURH 2014, NRHH member Samuel Wagner was sworn in as MACURH director.

Furthermore, during the closing ceremonies, NDSU was selected to host NACURH 2015. 10 of the 18 NACURH conference Team staff members are active NRHH Members as well. The Bison Chapter of NRHH is working with the Conference team by sponsoring a hospitality room and volunteering for the conference.

Recognition Banquet

The NRHH recognition banquet is an annual event that allows NRHH to honor the many hard-­‐working Hall Governments. Some of the awards that are handed out are: Hall Government of the Year, Hall Government Member of the Year, Program of the Year, Advisor of the Year, and Multi-­‐Hall Program of the Year.

NRHH also recognized their own member’s achievements that occurred throughout the year. The president’s of NRHH and RHA are given the opportunity at the banquet to recognize the group’s they have led for the past year. In addition, as part of our affiliation with the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, the RHA and NRHH president’s are able to give out a maximum of 8 bronze pins. These pins are to recognize those leaders who have gone above and beyond at the local level. Each president is given the opportunity to honor the students they have chosen to give their bronze pins to.

Golden Bison: One of the final awards of the night is the Golden Bison. This is the highest award that a student living on campus can receive. These awards are given for ongoing contributions to the life on campus. A maximum of 3 awards can be given annually.

Presenting this award not only honors some of the most deserving students on campus, but also gives younger students something to work and strive for in the coming years.

Scholarship: Each year NRHH pairs with The Department of Residence Life and Residence Hall Association to award seven scholarships to students who are dedicated to the work of Residence Life. Last spring two $500 scholarships, four $250 scholarships, and one $250 first-­‐year only scholarship were given out at the end of the year banquet. Along with a commitment to Residence Life, these students must also have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 to be eligible.

Conclusion

As you can see, the Bison Chapter of NRHH encompasses the values of NRHH. We thaw the campus with our continued dedication to the service of the community, and our commitment to recognition, leadership and scholastics. However, a dedication to these values is not unique to Bison Chapter NRHH.

Bison Chapter NRHH is unique because of our perseverance and commitment to our campus and region. We have fostered the growth of exceptional leaders. Our leaders first attend Leadership Training Day and Come Chill With Us, many then will attend MACURH, Leaders then move up to executive positions and some go beyond to become members of the Regional Board of directors or members of the NACURH conference team. Our Chapter has longstanding service traditions. Hump Day Hot Coco has quickly become a dead week staple, and our partnership with Madison Elementary School has evolved to include a yearly carnival and continuous box tops donations. We are constantly implementing new ways to recognize others, most notably with #RecognitionNDSU which increased our twitter following to 200% what it was previous. Our relationship with hall governments grows daily with our Shining Diamond mentoring program, and our relationship with RHA gets stronger with every event we share.

These are just a few of the ways the Bison Chapter attempts to thaw the frozen kingdom of Fargo, ND.

I am elated to write to you on behalf of the Bison Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary as they place a bid for the MACURH NRHH Chapter of the Year. I have been a member of this chapter since November 2012. In the past year, I have witnessed a continuously strong chapter of student-leaders lead the honorary.

As NRHH looks to the future in defining itself through purpose and values, I have no doubt that NDSU will continue to remain an example to other schools. They often lead the way for our younger studentleaders, as you would expect from a leadership-based honorary.

They continue to serve our campus by hosting events for residence hall students to engage in leadership development, encouraging academic success by hosting study-a-thon’s and handing out coffee and treats during Finals week They often serve the community through volunteerism and philanthropy; the hours of service far exceed what is expected of student organizations.

They also excel at recognizing the efforts of our students, faculty, and staff. OTM’s are a staple at NDSU, with numerous regional winning authors in our chapter. They have found a niche in making recognition more personal, however. They choose to uplift one another through activities in meetings, they do campus-wide recognition for our Resident Assistant Staffs, Hall Governments, Hall Directors and Central Office staff in the Department of Residence Life. They clearly understand the value of recognition in developing a vibrant community and campus that respects the efforts of all.

Above all, I sincerely believe that NRHH is a conglomerate of the most passionate and enlightened student-leaders on our campus. They will no doubt continue to do good things for North Dakota State University, the Fargo-Moorhead community and MACURH.
