April 13, 2015 Dear NACURH Selection Committee, I am proud to write this letter of support on behalf of the Intermountain Affiliate for the IACURH nominee for the NACURH NCC of the Year Award, Jenn Gray from the University of Arizona.

Jenn enabled each of these delegates to bring back an impactful program from IACURH, which multiplied the impact and reach of the region without taking a step off campus. This commitment resulted in a marked increase in amount of interest in IACURH in residents at the U of A. The dedication and innovation that Jenn has shown goes beyond her university to impact the entire region. During her term, Jenn worked to create RHA Exchange, a daylong strategic planning conference for multiple universities in the region.

Programming sessions included information and dialogue about branding, advertising, regional campus impact, recruitment, and may other relevant issues. She also implemented new timelines for regional award bidding and conference tasks, which allowed for higher quality award bids and regional submissions in general. As a result, the University of Arizona authored multiple regionally winning awards.

As an NCC, Jenn is incredibly approachable and open-minded. The strength of these traits has allowed her to become a trusted resource for other NCC’s throughout the region. She has created multiple connections and fostered community among the NCCs. Over the past year, she has introduced legislation during regional boardroom and held multiple roles on committees, such as the IACURH Spirit and Traditions Committee. Jenn has really left her mark on this region in all that she does.

The University of Arizona has an NCC that pushes herself to create new traditions and move NACURH forward. She is motivated, innovative, and dedicated. It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of support for Jenn Gray as the NACURH NCC of the Year.

Jenn’s love for the IACURH region began while attending her first IACURH conference at the University of Wyoming in 2011. Since then, she has been a dedicated student, committing much of her time in college to growing as a leader through her involvement in RHA, NRHH, IACURH, and NACURH. Jenn has served on four executive boards, all of which led her to the National Communications Coordinator position for the 2014-15 academic year where she has done an exceptional job.

Jenn has gone above and beyond in the role of NCC by creating new, innovative ideas to increase the region’s transparency on the UA campus level; she has also worked to inform students about regional involvement opportunities and ensure that IACURH programs are brought back to campus. Jenn’s performance as NCC has fortified relationships on the UA campus and on the regional and national level.

Throughout her collegiate experience, Jenn has served on 4 regional committees and 2 national committees, in addition to her collaborative work on and defense of numerous bids. Jenn not only hosts an extensive skill set in writing quality recognition awards - she has been a phenomenal resource for students wanting to get involved in the bid-writing process. Jenn’s enthusiasm for IACURHrelated functions is contagious to anyone she interacts with; within her term as NCC, she has created unparalleled interest in conference attendance and national involvement. The student leaders who have had the pleasure of working with her can easily come to the consensus that she has made significant positive change on the UA campus and the IACURH region as a whole.

RHA Involvement Responsibilities of the National Communications Coordinator at the University of Arizona: 1. Shall have attended at least one NACURH recognized conference (i.e. IACURH, NACURH, No Frills) prior to being elected a. If no qualified candidates accept a nomination, bid or are elected the position will reopen to all students who qualify for a RHA Executive Board position.

2. Represent the University of Arizona RHA at all conferences and business meetings affiliated with NACURH and promote the use of these memberships, 3. Recruit all delegates and prepare for conferences.

4. Ensure that all requirements for membership in IACURH and NACURH are fulfilled 5. Encourage the use of the benefits of membership in IACURH and NACURH 6. Supervise and coordinate the Resource File Index (RFI) 7. Be responsible for the “Of The Weeks” (OTW) coordination.

8. Encourage the use of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) for the “Of the Month” selections.

9. The outgoing and incoming National Communications Coordinator(s) shall attend the NACURH conference.

2014 Budget Overhaul In efforts to make the UA’s RHA more autonomous, Jenn worked with the rest of the executive board in the summer to completely restructure the current budget. The Residence Hall Association would absorb and become responsible for the 23 hall budgets in addition to their own. Coming from the Vice President of Business Administration position, Jenn offered advice and historical trends when deciding on funding for each line item, adding and getting rid of line items, in addition to, making each position more accountable for their spending.

HI Team 2014 Each year, UA’s RHA hosts Hall Involvement Team. This is a week and a half long program that trains primarily first year students in basic leadership, sustainability, and social justice. During this time, students attend various program sessions pertaining to programming, team work, communication, and so forth. This past year, Jenn teamed up with the head of HI Team, VP of Training and Development, Kelly Rezny to make sure there was a program session dedicated to regional and national involvement. Jenn wanted to make sure the 200+ first year students knew about IACURH and NACURH before they had even begun college. She showed them UA’s Conference Promo video, and put together an interactive PowerPoint guiding them through this year’s regional timeline. At the end, she held an open forum Q&A to make sure there were no blurred areas. Jenn also worked to put on multiple socials during the course of HI Team so students could talk to one another and get to know their new neighbors.

Spring Leadership Camp The annual, day-long event, Spring Leadership Camp (SLC) is a great opportunity to help students continue growing in their second semester, re-bond with their hall councils, and attend valuable second semester program sessions. Jenn saw this as a chance to promote spring conferences such as ARLC and NACURH. This also gave students the opportunity to facilitate programs of their own.

Jenn worked with the VP of Training and Development to allow students who attended IACURH and anyone else, to present programs. A goal Jenn had coming into the NCC position was to bring conferences back to campus, and by working with some of the delegates, Jenn was able to have 5 delegates present their favorite programs from IACURH 2014.!!

Hall Leadership Camp 2014 HLC is an annual event where RHA takes the hall councils from the 23 halls to an overnight leadership camp. Here they attend program sessions both related to their hall council positions and their own interests. Because Jenn sought to get more interest in the region and NACURH, she hosted another regional and national involvement interest session where she explained IACURH, ARLC (Arizona Residential Leadership Conference), and NACURH, as well as promoted IACURH 2014 at the University of Idaho.

RHA & NRHH

Legislation In an effort to make the UA campus fall more in line with that of IACURH, Jenn wrote legislation making it possible to bid down to other positions during the RHA Executive Board elections. This helps ensure students will run for their first choice position without fear of not being selected to be on the executive board at all. She also wrote a piece that required the person running for NCC to have attended a NACURH affiliated conference because of the vital role they play into the job. Jenn also wrote legislation requiring RHA eboard members to write at least 4 OTMs a semester after talking to another NCC in the region because she noticed UA was not strong in this area and believed the eboard could set a good example for other students to write as well.

Campus Recognition As part of the NCC job at the University of Arizona, the person who holds the position is in charge of recognition on campus. Jenn has multiple weekly recognition tactics including: • Of The Weeks (OTWs): Halls can submit one OTW a week in any of the three categories (Person, Program, or Spotlight). This is a 300 word max submission that is presented and voted on for a winner at weekly RHA meetings.

• Andy Sage Miller: This is RHA’s traveling spirit animal that is rewarded weekly to the hall that has stood out. They get to add an item that represents their hall best.

• Explorer of the Week: Going along with this year’s RHA theme, Wild About Leadership, the Explorer of the Week gets an RHA tumbler full of swag as recognition for their outstanding work and achievements within their hall each week.

Dinner with Eboard Because of RHA’s want to be transparent, Jenn decided to bring back dinner with eboard. This occurs after the RHA general body meetings where the executive board decides on a place to eat in the student union and invites any of the attendees of the meeting to come eat with them. Jenn believes this allows for all of the eboard members to be more approachable in a more laid back environment. Many hall council members will come and it has allowed for stronger relationships between the residents and the executive board.

Spirit Points Like IACURH has Banana Points, the UA has spirit points that are rewarded for various things. Jenn believes this gives incentive to halls to be named the Most Spirited Hall at the End of Year Banquet.

She awards spirit points for submitting OTWs, OTMs, attending programs and workshops, and for additional hall council members, CDs, and RAs attending general body meetings. This incentive has increased attendance at workshops and programs and has increased the number of OTWs submitted, meaning more deserving individuals are being recognized.

NRHH Constitution The Omega Eta Lambda Chapter of NRHH restructured and rewrote their entire constitution this year and Jenn was a vital help. She attended the two constitution meetings where she voiced her opinion about membership, positional responsibilities, history and traditions of the chapter, and helped to make sure the new constitution would fall in line with NACURH NRHH policy.

Having served as President, Jenn understands the organization, its goals, and the opportunities NRHH provides.

NRHH Jenn has been a member of the Omega Eta Lambda Chapter of NRHH since 2012. She has participated in numerous service projects, socials, and recognition projects. Because Jenn has been a part of NRHH for the past 6 semesters and served on the executive board as President for a year, she truly understands what the organization strives for and helps in their recruitment process. Jenn personally reaches out to students she believes would be exemplary members and encourages them to apply. Jenn has attended every general body meeting this year and when the current NRHH Executive Board brought legislation to the floor, she offered her opinion in the best interest of the chapter.

NRHH Recognition and Service Projects Throughout this year Jenn has participated in multiple recognition and service projects. At each general body meeting, there is an optional recognition project and Jenn is always the first one to jump in and help. Some of the projects include: • Hall Maintenance Staff • HI Team and Move-in Volunteers • RA Interview Coordinator • Women’s Resource Center • NRHH General Body Jenn is a strong believer in serving the community and even created the program at the University of Arizona that is in its third year of existence, RHA Gives a Day, where RHA and NRHH team up to get hall councils and NRHH members involved in a day of service around Tucson. There have also been various other service projects throughout this year that Jenn immediately joined including: • Letters to Soldiers • Tucson Children’s Museum • Tucson Clean and Beautiful

Conferences NACURH 2014 At NACURH 2014, the University of Arizona brought a delegation of 14 to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which Jenn co-lead as the incoming NCC. She helped the outgoing NCC lead delegation bonding activities, shop for materials, take charge in preparation meetings to make sure they ran efficiently, and she gave feedback to delegates who practiced their programs in preparation to facilitating them at the conference. Jenn also set up a GroupMe for the delegation to use throughout preparation and the conference in order for everyone to communicate quickly and effectively.

During the conference, Jenn kept in constant communication relaying from boardroom to the delegates attending program sessions. She wanted to make sure all of the delegates felt included in all aspects of the conference. While at the conference, Jenn also presented her program, Goal Catcher, which had over 40 people in attendance.

IACURH 2014 Promoting and Outreach: • Informational Posters: 11X17 posters were printed and each of the 214 Resident Assistants on the UA campus were given one to hang in their hall • Conference Promo Video: The UA’s unique conference video was shown at RHA General Body Meetings, included in Meeting Minutes, which go out to the entire RHA ListServ, shown during both regional and national involvement info sessions, uploaded to all RHA Social Media sites, and RHA Executives were encouraged to show the video when they attended their District Buddy meetings • Regional and National Involvement Info Sessions: 2 sessions were held (one at HI Team and one at HLC) where students received additional information and got any questions answered (See page 2) • NRHH Meetings: Jenn attended multiple NRHH General Body Meetings and asked to be included in the announcement portion to promote the IACURH conference Each year, the University of Arizona tries to reach out to first year students to inform them on what IACURH is, its benefits, and how to get involved. While the delegation does consist of returning delegates as well, UA pushes to get first year students involved and build the leaders that will be the future of the organization. The UA usually gets 30-40 applicants who want to attend the conference.

This year, because of Jenn’s multiple promotional strategies, she got an overwhelming 59 applicants, almost double the average.

Regional/National Involvement IACURH 2014 Jenn sat down with UA’s RHA President and NRHH President to select the delegation for IACURH 2014 at the University of Idaho. Once they had their 14 delegates, Jenn set up weekly meetings where all of the delegates would come to work on prep stuff, such as, costumes, spirit items, roll call and banner, and anything else they needed to do prior to the conference. At the first meeting, Jenn made each delegate a folder containing all waivers, an IACURH cheat sheet with facts and info about the region, and an Arizona and IACURH cheer sheet. She also included a list of expectations she had for her delegates before the conference, during the conference, and after to ensure everyone would have a positive experience.

Jenn split her delegates into committees in order to be most efficient with the meeting time.

• Spirit committee: Responsible for clothes pins, buttons, door decs, and program presenter recognition • Costume committee: Responsible for piecing together all costumes for all delegates attending and coordinating to make sure each person has everything they need while at the conference • Roll Call committee: Responsible for putting together the UA delegation’s roll call, including, getting any props, music, etc.

• Banner committee: Responsible for creating the UA delegation’s banner meeting the requirements set forth by conference staff • Display committee: Responsible for piecing together a display relating to the theme and meeting the necessary protocols At the end of each meeting, each committee would have to give an update on what they accomplished that day, what they had left to do, if they needed additional help, and if they had any questions for their fellow delegates.

Once delegates found out about program selection, Jenn provided them with the necessary items they needed and set up times where they could practice their programs in front of the other UA delegates and receive peer feedback before presenting to the region. This gave the delegates more confidence before facilitating a program, some for the first time.

From the delegation of sixteen, nine of them were selected to facilitate their program and one received a top program at the conference.

During the conference, Jenn kept in constant communication with her delegates and continuously gave them words of encouragement. She made sure everyone was having fun and if delegates needed to talk to her, they could.

No Frills 2015 Because No Frills was at Arizona State University-Tempe, a school not too far from the University of Arizona, Jenn saw this as a unique opportunity to get more students familiar with the business side of IACURH. Jenn was able to attend No Frills 2012 her freshman year, and this experience is what gave her the drive to become NCC because of how much she enjoyed the boardroom atmosphere. Jenn did not think twice about extending this opportunity to students outside of the traditional three that go. She invited both the RHA Executive Board and the NRHH Executive Board to fill out a short questionnaire and three additional students who have interest in furthering their involvement were chosen. Here they were able to see bid defense, legislation, and network with other schools.

NACURH 2015 Jenn made sure to open applications for NACURH early to allow ample time for potential delegates to apply and to enable her to purchase flights within the conference budget. She kept in mind diversity and the needs of the UA campus when selecting the final delegation, as well as, who would benefit the most from attending. While Jenn requires each of her delegates to submit one program for review, she encouraged all of the delegates to submit additional programs to ensure all of their passions were being brought forth. Jenn hopes to work with the new NCC to ensure there is a bring back from NACURH.

Regional/National Involvement Summer Training/Bids This year, the incoming RHA Executive Board stayed after the end of the school year to participate in trainings and get a jump start on the upcoming school year. Jenn worked with the RHA President to set time aside to talk about upcoming regional and national items. During this time, Jenn promoted the RHA Executive Board to apply to be on regional and national committees when applications were released, had everyone sign up to receive the “Monkey Monday” if they didn’t already, and they talked about bids. Jenn made it a goal of hers coming into the position to get bids done earlier and create a timeline that allowed for the least amount of stress. The RHA Executive Board chose 3 bids they wanted to work on to be presented at IACURH 2014. Each of the executives was assigned to work on some aspect of the bid over the summer. While Jenn did not plan on having these bids completed among their return in the fall, she did want to have a good foundation for each. When the executives came back in the fall, at least 40% of each of the three bids was completed, including themes and some content. The Executive Board later added three more bids and began work on them early in the fall. Jenn set a timeline for all working on bids to follow and created outlines of what to include. Jenn, along with her bid team, finished all 6 bids three days prior to when they were due allowing ample time for revision before submitting them regionally.

Bringing IACURH Programs Back to UA Coming into the position, Jenn had one major goal that she had not seen much success in in the past; bringing conferences back to campus. This is something she worked diligently on with the IACURH 2014 delegation to make happen. Jenn created the program, “Down the Rabbit Hole: Bringing IACURH programs back to the UA” as a spin off to the “Through the Looking Glass” theme.

Delegates were asked to pick their favorite program session they attended at IACURH 2014 put on by another school and present it to their peers on campus. However, due to an emergency unforeseen circumstance the day of, the program had to be cancelled and because it was so close to finals and the semester’s end, was not put on. Through this road block, Jenn did not give up and had the delegates submit their programs that were supposed to be presented then at Spring Leadership Camp so the students unable to go to the conference could still experience a piece of what the delegates had learned.

Spirits and Traditions Committee 2014-2015 As a member of the Spirits and Traditions committee, Jenn attends chats, promotes social media competitions and events, and offers ideas and input. This semester, Jenn assisted in deciding the No Frills Spirit Week activities and gave her input on the regional roll call at NACURH. She also helped decide on how the Spirits and Traditions committee would promote and support National Residence Hall Month regionally.

Furthermore, when one of Jenn’s delegates from IACURH approached her about wanting to be on a committee, Jenn took it upon herself to go to the Director and see if there was a way to reopen applications to those who missed the time to apply or were unaware of the opportunity at the beginning of the year.

Goals Transparency Regional/National: Much of the housing population at the University of Arizona is comprised of first year students. Because of this, understanding what exactly IACURH and NACURH are and what they do can be unclear. To minimize confusion to the students, Jenn started a monthly newsletter to keep students in the know on regional and NACURH happenings. Her vision was to create something like the “Monkey Monday,” the regional newsletter, but instead of weekly, she created one a month. The newsletter was given out at general body meetings for hall reps to bring back to their halls and attached the the meeting minutes from the corresponding week. Jenn has already taken initiative in introducing them to IACURH and NACURH as early as possible, as seen in the HI Team section on page 2.

OTM: This year Jenn had noticed a decreasing number of OTMs submitted at UA, and while this is not her direct positional duty, it does have to do with regional/ national correspondence. She is also an avid promoter of recognition. Jenn held an “OTM How To” session during the RHA general body meeting so there is more awareness of where to go and how to submit an OTM. Her hope was to see UA’s OTM numbers increase. Jenn also wrote legislation requiring RHA eboard members to write 4 OTMs a semester. She hopes this will allow the eboard to act as a role model to other students and that it will encourage them to write more OTMs or have more awareness of the process itself.

Positional Transitioning At the University of Arizona, the executive board transitioning process is slightly blurry. Jenn has been working with the RHA President and Advisor to create a better transition process for those newly elected executive board members coming in the spring. Jenn wants them to be as prepared as possible upon joining the RHA family. The transition will consist of a detailed outline explaining the monthly tasks. Because each position is very different, it is important all executive board members complete this to better prepare the organization for the future.

The transitional process will also consist of outgoing positions meeting with those taking over their position.

Jenn is currently working with the incoming NCC to strategize how delegates attending NACURH 2015 can bring their experience back to campus in the fall. She would like to see the collaboration with the Director of Training and Development to implement program sessions from NACURH to be facilitated during Hall Involvement Team and/or Hall Leadership Camp (see page 2) in the fall.

Leadership Advancement Next year Jenn will be serving as part of the 2015 Teach for America Corps in Tulsa, OK. She hopes to be able to take what she learned in her multiple positions at the University of Arizona and her valuable experiences within the IACURH region and NACURH into that position and help inspire the future leaders.

Jenn is a strong advocate for continuing growth and leadership and wants to help build the same solid sense of community that she found within her collegiate career in her classroom. Jenn also hopes to provide leadership opportunities and stress the importance of taking advantage of these to her future students.

RHA Exchange Jenn worked with neighboring regional school, ASU-Tempe’s NCC, Becca Lynch to create an RHA Exchange. This entailed ASU-Tempe bringing 15-25 student leaders down to the University of Arizona for a day of collaboration, programs, and learning. Here, selected individuals facilitated area specific programs ranging from regional and national involvement, budgeting, furthering leadership, as well as, an open forum where the 2 schools could ask each other questions, compare structures, and collaborate to make their individual programs stronger. Since ASU-Tempe and the University of Arizona operate very similarly and since they are so close to one another, Jenn and Becca thought this would be a great opportunity to learn more and to make their RHA and NRHH programs stronger, while giving students the opportunity to grow as leaders. Jenn is also worked to bring the ASU-Tempe NCC to one of UAs general body meetings at her school to learn how UA runs and operates their meetings. Both the RHA Exchange and Executive Exchange are things Jenn hope to see continue and there has been nothing but positive feedback from both by attendees.

April 15, 2015 Dear NACURH: It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Jennifer Gray for NCC of the Year. I have worked with Jenn for the past two years as her advisor on the University Arizona Residence Hall Association (RHA). I most gladly and enthusiastically agreed to write this letter, for Jenn is the kind of student who is unfortunately all too rare; she is both an outstanding leader and a kind and caring individual.

Jenn is one of the most phenoemal student leaders I have had the priviledge of working with and, quite honestly, a student leader that all advisors hope to work with one day. Jenn has accomplished more in her time in college than the average student while also excelling academically. She has worked hard to balance her personal life and out of classroom experiences while maintaining a full course load. It takes a very organized and dedicated individual to do this. Jenn is also a student at the University of Arizona in good academic and judical standing with the univeristy.

During her time with the RHA, Jenn has served in the role of Vice President of Programming (2012-2013), Vice President of Business Administration (2013-2014), and is currently the UA RHA’s NCC. Jenn has been instrumental in taking the organization to new heights and was a key figure in helping the organization merge with the new expectations from the Department of Residence Life and the University. Through her efforts, RHA has proven to be more transparent, our programs have been higher quality, conferneces and regional and national happenings are more widely understood, and RHA has collaborated more with the students who live in the halls and our on campus partners than ever before. She serves as a great ambassoador for the organization to the University administration and the campus community. Jenn has helped to set the organization up for success for years to come.

Thorugh my experience working with Jenn, she has displayed many great qualities and strengths. It is hard to list all of them, but strong work ethic, organized, hard working, dedicated, caring, and passionate help to highlight a few. She also has excellent skills in interacting with other individuals and is someone who will take things given to her and go above and beyond what is asked.

But most of all, I would like to impress upon you the caliber of Jenn’s person. I admire her ethic of care. She is a person who believes that actions should support her philosophy of treating others with respect and integrity. She is inherently kind, generous and honors all who meet and know her. She is, without a doubt, an NCC who is deserving of this award.
