WELCOME TO THE 2019 NACA® NORTHERN PLAINS REGIONAL CONFERENCE!

Hello and welcome! This National Association for Campus Activities conference is full of showcases, educational sessions, networking, slime (you saw the theme, right?) and even more for you wonderful people! The 2019 Northern Plains Regional Conference Program Committee (RCPC) is so excited to have you here in beautiful St. Paul, MN and we hope you find NACALODEON to be an incredible and unforgettable experience.

Nathan Hofer

2019 Northern Plains Regional Conference Chair

I’ve been involved with NACA since I was an undergraduate student and have called Northern Plains home since then. NACA was the open door to my future career and a life of unknown joy and opportunity in Student Activities. Every time I attend the Northern Plains conference, I am overwhelmed by the energy and the nostalgia – the same type of nostalgia I feel when I think of our NACALODEON theme and the other fun memories associated with ’90s TV shows. I hope this conference gives you the same type of experience I had at my very first NACA conference – the kind of experience that equips you with knowledge, resources and an ability to make a positive change in your communities. Now, with those heady hopes and goals in mind, how do we make the most of this conference? First, get involved in this little community. Check out the Volunteer Center and sign up to assist during NACALODEON. Talk to the RCPC members you will meet this week, get to know them and see how you can get involved with our 2020 conference, as we have opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, staff and associates. Head down to the Marketplace and while you’re there, stop by the NACA® Foundation fundraising booth and see how you can help it continue to provide dozens of scholarships and research grants each year. Go to an educational session and take home new skills, and get inspired by the Graphics Competition displays. Sit back and enjoy the incredible showcases we have planned, and meet associates and ask questions about their industry. Connect with delegations from all over the region at the School Swap/Student Social, at the Staff/Associate Reception, and at the Professional Networking Breakfast. As you can see, there are so many ways to make this conference one to remember, and I hope that each of you attending will take a step out of your comfort zone and fully engage with the community and learning opportunities that are here. Thank you again to all of the RCPC members for all of their hard work this past year, and thank you to each and every one of you for being here with us. Let’s make a “splat” this year, everyone! Nathan Hofer Director of Student Activities University of Sioux Falls (SD)

CONFERENCE NOTES

NACA® NORTHERN PLAINS REGIONAL CONFERENCE

Hey! Where are the Ed Sessions? As you may have already noticed, Educational Session descriptions are nowhere to be found in this conference program. Why? Well, in an effort to provide you with the most up-to-date content, we decided to allow session presenters to submit their topics later than usual. That means presenters are planning new sessions while we are busy designing and printing the conference program. But don’t worry — you can find all the session descriptions, presenters and room assignments in the NACA® App. And there will be a limited number of paper handouts listing the session titles, descriptions and locations, available at registration (so get there early!) So download the app, set your schedule and get your learning on! Foundation Fundraising

On-Site Volunteer Opportunities

Why? The NACA® Foundation offers numerous scholarships and research grants that are available to undergraduate and graduate students, student leaders, professional staff and associate members on an annual basis. By participating in these fundraisers, you are helping the Foundation provide scholarships and grants.

NACA® Northern Plains wants you! We are looking for volunteers to make this year’s conference a success. On-site volunteering does not require much of your time, so you won’t miss the conference. Sign up to help with registration, be a ticket taker, staff the Foundation fundraising table and more! Check in at the Volunteer Center.

What? There are three fundraisers this year: LUNCH - On Saturday join us at a local restaurant (watch on social media for which ones) where the NACA® Foundation will earn money back from simply you feeding yourself. SLIME AN ASSOCIATE - Have a spare dollar? Want to see someone

get slimed NACALODEON style? Toss your spare change in and the associate with the most money will get slimed at the end of the conference. RAFFLE - Bring some cash as we will be raffling off HUGE prizes

donated by associates. You will have the chance to win coupons off performances and possibly even a free performance at your school! How? Simply bring a few extra bucks with you. For the raffle, we will have official NACA receipts. Be sure to check with your advisor/purchasing office, but you should be able to use school funds for this awesome fundraiser!

Please make sure all mobile devices are on silent mode during the conference.

NACA® Core Values Stewardship • Innovation • Communication • Respect • Learning • Inclusivity These core values are the fundamental beliefs that guide our behaviors and decision-making process. As a recognized leader in higher education, we believe our professional values are vital to the advancement of the Association and the campus activities profession.

NACA® POLICIES Definition of Diversity Diversity is an attribute and a goal. As an attribute, diversity is ethnic identification/race, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion, economic status and the many other aspects of our lives which define the family of humanity. As a goal, diversity refers to the intentional valuing, respecting and inclusion of all peoples. NACA recognizes the diversity of all its members and supports the development and implementation of programs and services that achieve this goal. Non-Discrimination, Diversity Advancement and Affirmative Action Principles NACA is committed to advancing diversity development and the principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action through its respective programs, services and volunteer involvement. To ensure compliance with these principles, the organization will: • Not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, economic status, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ethnic background or disability in any of their policies, procedures or practices. • Promote vigorous efforts to enhance, develop and increase a diverse volunteer pool in all areas of the Association. • Actively promote diversity in its programs and services. • Expect all volunteers and NACA Office staff to consistently display sensitivity to diversity and the principles of affirmative action. • Promote the importance of eliminating discriminatory and/ or culturally insensitive language, behavior and content from NACA-sponsored activities and will urge all members and guests of the Association to cooperate in this effort. There is no intent to support censorship. The purpose is to induce thought and advance planning in an effort to ensure that showcase performances, Campus Activities Marketplace displays, educational sessions and other NACA-sponsored activities reflect appropriate diversity and sensitivity in their plans and actions. Civility Statement Prominent among the values that define the NACA community is civility, which includes mutual respect, fairness, and politeness. Membership in any community requires a concern for the common good for all who belong to that community. Each individual may possess different ideas, as well as different ways of communicating those ideas, particularly in a community as varied and diverse as an association. Because of these differences, respect and civility are integral to maintaining the quality of the association environment. Respect and civility should therefore be afforded to all individuals regardless of role within the association. This includes treating people with courtesy and consideration, acting and speaking judiciously and behaving professionally. All members of the association community are called upon to promote and value this ethic of common respect and civility. We will encourage discussion with a goal of instilling an appreciation for the importance of fair-mindedness, personal responsibility, and respect for differing opinions. At such occasions, members will always be strongly encouraged to observe common standards of decorum and to display a respectful tenor. We will also consider appropriate steps to be taken when members of our community do not respect these standards. Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Policy The National Association for Campus Activities and the NACA® Foundation recognize the serious threats that alcohol and other substance abuse present to college populations, the entertainment industry, and to society as a whole. We realize that our Association is not immune to the problems associated with abuse. NACA is committed to addressing this issue through various activities, programs and educational efforts on regional and national levels. All NACA® members and volunteers are encouraged to uphold the Association’s statement in spirit and action; however, NACA has no responsibility for the conduct or behavior of event attendees.

8

NACA® NORTHERN PLAINS REGIONAL CONFERENCE Alcohol served outside of any official event (an official event is one endorsed or hosted by NACA) is not the responsibility of NACA, but is instead the responsibility of the individual/group/ firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity. All responsibility for determining whether participants at the activity are underage and for complying with applicable state and local laws rests solely with the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity, and is not in any way the responsibility of NACA or any of its employees or representatives. In the event that NACA becomes the subject of a claim or loss arising from violation of this policy by any person, group or business entity, or service of alcohol at any non-official event, that person, group or business entity agrees that it shall indemnify and hold harmless NACA from and against all resulting claims and losses, including NACA’s costs and attorney’s fees, that arise from or relate to violation of this policy and/or service of alcohol at said non-official event. Special Needs Although the Association strives to make all events accessible to all participants, including individuals with disabilities or special needs, where reasonably possible, not all special needs may be accommodated at all sites. If the Association is unable to provide the special service(s) requested by a delegate and the delegate does not attend the event, the Association will refund the registration fee. Videotaping/Photography Policies NACA photographs and videotapes regional events and attendees. These photographs and videotapes may be used in any NACA® materials and publications, and on the NACA website. By attending this event, you, your delegates and/or the acts that you represent give NACA your consent to use photographs and videotapes in which you, your delegates and/or your acts appear. NACA® delegates or other persons may use photographic, videotape or other image and sound recording devices to record events and activities that take place during NACA® events, as long as these activities do not interfere with the audience enjoyment of or participation in NACA® events. Those photographing, videotaping or otherwise recording events cannot interfere with showcase technical crew, stagehands, etc. The following specific guidelines apply to any photography, videotaping or other recording at an NACA® event: • Professional crews will not be allowed. • On-stage filming or placement will not be allowed. Recording must occur from the show floor. • Access to the soundboard will not be allowed. • Audience views cannot be obstructed. • Power must be self-contained (i.e., battery packs). Access to the event power supply will not be allowed. • Use of supplemental lighting will not be allowed. • Some forms of recording/taping may not be available at specific venues due to union or other facility regulations. • Recording/taping of some materials may require the permission of the owner of such materials, and it is the recorder’s responsibility to obtain such necessary permissions. • If audience members, showcase crew or other technical, conference or facility staff complain about the position of a camera/operator, the camera/operator will be asked to move. If the camera/operator does not comply, they will not be allowed to continue taping. By using videographic and/or other recording devices to record NACA® events and activities, the recorder represents that he/she has obtained all necessary permissions from any copyright holders or other entities whose rights may be affected. The recorder agrees to indemnify NACA, its employees, agents, officers, directors and independent contractors from any and all liability arising from the recorder’s videotaping or recording activities.

NACA and Meeting host event staff have the right to deny service to participants for any reason, and may require a participant to leave the event. Personal Safety and Security NACA works diligently to provide a safe and secure environment at its meetings and events by working with venue staff to make sure meeting participants are safe. We ask that all attendees report any questionable or concerning activity to NACA staff so that they can take immediate action. No concern is too small; if you see something, say something. • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. • Use the buddy system when walking to and from the event venue, networking event locations during early or late hours. • Don’t wear your meeting badge on the street. Take it off as soon as you leave the building/venue. • Don’t carry a lot of cash or credit cards. Leave in your hotel room safe. • Don’t leave personal property unattended anywhere, anytime. If it is an emergency or if you need immediate assistance, first call 911 then ask any NACA staff member or the on-site security personnel to help you.

NACA® POLICIES Unacceptable Behavior NACA has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or harassment, including but not limited to sexual harassment by participants or our staff at our meetings. If you experience harassment or hear of any incidents of unacceptable behavior, NACA asks that you complete the information found on the Incident Report Form so that we can take appropriate action if necessary. In the event you do not receive a response to your filed report form within 20 days please direct an email to the Executive Director of NACA. • Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form. • Physical or verbal abuse of any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, NACA staff member, service provider, or other meeting guest. • Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to, verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, national origin, inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images in public spaces or in presentations, or threatening or stalking any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, NACA staff member, service provider, or other meeting guest. • Disruption of presentations at sessions, in the exhibit hall, or at other events organized by NACA at the meeting venue, hotels, or other NACA-contracted facilities. Bias Definition Bias targets a marginalized identity whether real or perceived to be a part of a recognizable group or affiliation. Legally protected identities include: actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, or disability. NACA also recognizes that bias may occur as a result of one’s actual or perceived age, ancestry, sex, gender expression, citizenship or immigration status, marital status, socio-economic class, or religious practice. The second list of identities are not legally protected identities in the United States but are affirmed through NACA’s Core Values of diversity, multicultural competence, and human dignity. NACA reserves the right to take any action deemed necessary and appropriate, including immediate removal from the meeting without warning or refund, in response to any incident of unacceptable behavior, and NACA reserves the right to prohibit attendance at any future meeting.

FACILITY MAPS

All About the Campus Activities Marketplace Hey, NACA® Northern Plains Attendees! What you do for your campus and for your fellow students is important and awesome. You are taking time out of your busy schedule to attend the National Association for Campus Activities Northern Plains conference, see some amazing artists, meet some great associates, and bring some great events back to your campus. The Campus Activities Marketplace puts campus programmers in direct contact with the agents and/or artists. In the Marketplace, you can meet artists, watch small demos and get literature from the different agencies and vendors about what services they can provide for your campus. The Campus Activities Marketplace is an ideal time to connect with artists who showcased, novelty vendors, speakers who did ed sessions, independent artists and various agencies who provide an array of services. Your time is valuable in the Campus Activities Marketplace, so here are some good tips from students who have attended NACA® Northern Plains over the years: • I f you liked an artist who showcased, find their booth, talk to them and their agent, and discuss some potential dates that you might bring them to campus. • When talking to associates at their booth, be sure to give them your contact information if you want to discuss possibilities after the conference. It’s good practice to be crystal clear on what method you prefer to be contacted: phone, email, carrier pigeon, or all the above. •Y our time is valuable, so take their information, let them know a good time for them to follow up, and move on to the next booth to learn more about what they do. •B e respectful to the associates. Every associate/agent/vendor spent a lot of time and money to come to the conference. They want to connect with you and get an idea of what your school does for programming. • Th e next best thing to “yes” is “no, thank you” – we realize that what we have to offer isn’t for everyone. Just kindly tell us “No, thank you!” so we don’t waste your time telling you about something that your school doesn’t even bring in! • S ome schools have chairs or co-chairs who handle different categories of entertainment: comedy, music, novelty, etc. If an associate has a specialty, get them in touch with the student who handles that specific type of entertainment. • I f you ever find yourself confused or uncomfortable, talk to your adviser or alert one of the NACA staff. This is supposed to be a fun and productive time for you, and we want to make sure we keep it that way. •D o follow up after the conference. Nothing is a bigger bummer than having a good conversation in the booth and then getting radio silence after the fact. If it is something you are still working on, reach out and give a timeline. It’s also helpful for an associate to hear that it’s no longer on the radar if that is the case. The point of NACA is to get business done efficiently for everyone that attends, and this type of communication will keep efficiency. •P ace yourself. NACA is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s long hours. Plan your schedule and distribute your energy appropriately, as it’s important to be present at each Campus Activities Marketplace, as each one provides new and beneficial information. •H ave fun! It’s cliché, but it’s true. The more excited you are about bringing an act to campus, the better the event will be when you do bring them to campus. •D on’t forget why you are at NACA. You are here to do business, maintain and/or create relationships, and improve your campus events. You are doing something worthwhile, and who knows — you might be bringing the next Kevin Hart or Zac Brown Band to your campus before they get famous. Thank you for coming to NACA® Northern Plains and spending time in the Campus Activities Marketplace! Melissa Beer & Jolene Chevalier

The Los Angeles comic performs across the city and has successfully showcased in several festivals, such as the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, the World Series of Comedy and previous NACA Showcases (2014 West and Central and the 2015 National Convention). He’s noted for his observational humor, which stems from his personal experiences as an immigrant from Nigeria who assimilated into American culture and society. Through comedy, he explores what makes us different, and more importantly, how these differences make us all the same.

Hauser is best known for blending folk, blues, jazz and pop with skillful guitar textures and a truly unique voice. He was nominated for two Grammy Awards for his participation in the UNT One O’clock Lab Band in 2009. He resides in Denton, TX, where he performs weekly and grows his fan base through engaging live performances on guitar and saxophone. Rosenbalm got his start as a top 20 finalist on Season 6 of NBC’s Emmy Award-winning show “The Voice.” Wowing his audience, and Usher, with Usher’s own hit, “There Goes My Baby,” he quickly established himself as one of the media’s and critic’s front-running competitors for the season.

LECTURE

A sober comedian discusses substance abuse, addiction and his recovery

In this hilarious and educational comedy show, Patrick Holbert tells stories and jokes about his past addiction and current sobriety. “Punch Line Drunk” outlines his transformative journey from abusing substances to amusing audiences. It’s an informational “TED Talk of Shame” that spans his college years as an overachiever under the influence to his debaucherous career as a TV producer, and how it all came crashing down. With 10 years of being clean, Holbert performs standup nightly in New York City’s best comedy clubs and seediest bars. He’s proclaimed himself “the Jason Bourne of safely navigating booze-soaked environments.” During this presentation, students will be asked to consider their own relationships with alcohol and other drugs while also learning pragmatic ways to live a fun and productive life without getting wasted. After joining him on his twisted saga from keg stands to standup, audiences are encouraged to participate in an interactive Q&A.

“Julia was AMAZING!! Her presentation was honest, raw, relevant and powerful. Students are still talking about the impact it has had on them personally. I have heard students say how nervous they were about standing up in front of their peers to identify various life experiences, traumas and difficulties, only to be shocked and comforted by the number of their peers standing with them. Julia touched them at their core and helped them to see they are not alone and that they can stay true to their path, no matter what pulls at them or what obstacles they have faced. She was truly awesome and we are so grateful to have had her come to our campus!” – Manchester University (IN). With self-harm and suicide ideation reaching epidemic highs, there has never been a more critical time to connect in a real way and for students to know they are not alone.

Reem Edan is a first-generation Iraqi-American comedian who was born and raised in a small Colorado town – where she was literally considered “the diversity.” Growing up would’ve been easy if she wasn’t half-Sunni-half-Shiite, the middle child, overweight and if her family hadn’t moved back to the Middle East one week before 9/11. Alas, easy rarely leads to funny. Being the odd one out helped shape Edan’s quirky perspective, which she uses to examine cross-cultural challenges, shatter stereotypes and give us a glimpse of what life is like for today’s “Muslim-Ennial.” She’s performed at major venues across the US, Europe and Japan, at festivals including Devil’s Cup, Funny Women Fest and Burbank Comedy Fest (Best of Fest), and with Elizabeth Banks on her WhoHaha platform for the release of “Pitch Perfect 3.”

My Body Sings Electric has spent more than a decade tirelessly building a following for their playfully honest blend of indie, alternative and post-hardcore rock. The band is prepared to release their most ambitious work yet with a new album mixed and produced by Jason Livermore, who’s worked with Rise Against and A Day To Remember. MBSE’s debut full-length album, “Part 1: The Night Ends,” showed impressive sales for a self-managed and unsigned band, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Rocky Mountain Charts and No. 156 for Billboard’s National Indie Chart. The band’s video for the first album single, “New Friends,” earned a premiere on MTV Buzzworthy. They have amassed a list of impressive dates on tour with Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, Nick Thomas of The Spill Canvas, The Hush Sound and arena dates opening for Imagine Dragons, Young the Giant, Grouplove, Bastille and more.

Myq Kaplan (Myq is pronounced Mike) is a comedian with a quirky sense of humor. He’s delivered gut-busting entertainment to venues and viewers across the nation and has made appearances on a variety of television shows, including “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.” He’s been a finalist on “Last Comic Standing” and has appeared on “America’s Got Talent.” Kaplan’s special “Small, Dork and Handsome” debuted on Netflix and is now available on Amazon.

Chaunté Shayne is a country singer/songwriter hailing from Wisconsin. She’s been writing her own lyrics since age eight, but didn’t master her talent until she was 16. Thanks to YouTube, she learned how to play guitar, leading her to be confident in the message she wanted to deliver. Today Shayne has written over 70 original songs, and she’s also spent time writing with Mark McGuinn from Mucho Love Music out of Nashville, TN. Shayne’s lyrics are edgy and she speaks from a woman’s point of view, always saying what she means. She wants to have a voice for those that don’t know what to say, how to say it or are too afraid to speak up. She’s been compared to Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, and Brantley Gilbert. She performs with a four-piece band or as an acoustic duo and has opened for Stephanie Quayle and David Ray.

Feraz Ozel turned down acceptance into law school and the CIA for a life in comedy. Now, he tours across the country providing crowds with a diverse and energetic brand of insightful humor. Ozel has made national television appearances on “2 Broke Girls,” “Comics Unleashed” and “The Doctors,” as well as Hulu’s “Coming to the Stage.” He’s been featured in The LA Times, The Atlantic Magazine and Rolling Stone. Ozel performed in the 2016 CBS Diversity Showcase. Recently, his debut album, “Chillennial,” charted in Billboard’s Top 10 and iTunes’ Top 3, making it one of the top comedy albums in the world. Ozel regularly headlines clubs and colleges around the world, assuming he’s able to pull himself away from the black hole that is Netflix.

Gospel Lee deeply believes in “bringing light to dark places” through culturally relevant, positive, inspirational hip-hop. In addition to his dynamic live show, he is also known for his uncanny freestyling prowess, spontaneously composing entire songs from audience-selected topics. It’s this desire to bring light to dark places that has allowed him to open for Grammy Award winners Switchfoot, Lecrae and Tobymac.

The band’s clean guitars, dance floor rhythms and powerful vocals have garnered comparisons to established acts like Walk The Moon, Fun., The Killers and MisterWives. The sextet’s high-energy live performances have put them on the map up and down the East Coast, including events such as Capital Pride, Launch Music Conference & Festival, Celebrate Fairfax and Firefly Music Festival. The band’s most recent EP, “Headfirst,” tackles the 21st-century struggle to define relationships and find a community from the offbeat perspective they’ve cultivated in their 10-plus years of writing together.

Born in Azerbaijan, Ruslan and his family fled to Russia in the ’90s to escape religious persecution. The journey eventually took him halfway around the world to San Diego. In a brand-new culture, he had to find a mode of expression that was true to himself, where he had come from and where he was going. He found that expression through hip-hop and poetry. Today, he creates the type of hip-hop that empowers, encourages and entertains everyone who hears it because it celebrates triumph and success while bearing the scorch marks of adversity. Ruslan has expanded into YouTube vlogging, financial literacy workshops and motivational speaking. He aims to provide a balance of information and inspiration while sharing his personal story of overcoming setbacks.

AJ Smith is an award-winning songwriter/recording artist and multiinstrumentalist with international radio-charting success. His touring experience includes opening for The Eagles, Lindsey Stirling and Emily Kinney, and he’s headlined some of the world’s largest music festivals. Smith’s latest EP, “Brooklyn Nights,” has been featured nationally on iHeart Radio, and he has had Mid Atlantic region on-air interviews via stations like DC101 in D.C., Z100 in New York and Eagle 97.7 in Delaware. His solo shows are a spectacle of showmanship, as he is often found performing on several instruments at once while showcasing his “majestic vocals” (BeatPort) and his Songwriting Hall of Famerecognized songwriting proficiency.

With an array of impressions, stories, gestures and faces, his memorable performance is sure to please. His unique solo show featuring marimba, harmonica and the Indian dhol drum has been featured on PBS’s “Minnesota Original.” The Minnesota native is also a three-time winner of the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians. His compelling show enlightens unwitting students with slices of culture through demonstrations and student engagement.

Aman K. Batra is an Indian-American poet from Artesia, CA. She graduated from UCLA in 2014 with a degree in creative writing and has since built her career in written and performance poetry. Christie Buchele is a Denver-based comedian who “fell” into comedy in 2010 when she went to see a cute guy do an open mic and thought to herself, “I can do better.” She was right. Despite being raised by a single father, Buchele made a name for herself by joking about the heartwrenching and hilarious realities of being a woman with a disability. She’s a strong stand-up with weak legs and her comedy aims to make the audience think about how they perceive people with disabilities while making them hurt from laughter. Buchele reps the Mile High City hard while crushing audiences with a wry, biting style that’s a bit sweet and a little bit surly, proving time and again you can say almost anything with a smile on your face and a gimp in your step.

A lifelong resident of Kansas City, Mike Debus has always had a passion for painting. After graduating from college with a bachelor of fine arts degree, he spent a few years in corporate America before pursuing his dream to become a full-time artist. In 2008, Debus was asked to paint live on stage at a large youth conference. He accepted the challenge and found the experience exhilarating and inspiring! Since then, he’s made performance painting his focus. His creative mission continues as he takes his talents around the country to entertain audiences of all sizes. Along with creating beautiful one-of-a-kind paintings in a matter of minutes, he adds value to communities. After a performance, the pieces are presented to the hosting organization as a gift.

Harrison Browne is the first transgender athlete in North American professional sports. He currently plays in the National Women’s Hockey League and was on the championship team, the Buffalo Beauts, for the 2016-17 season. Browne has been a trailblazer and pioneer for LGBTQ rights. He helped form the first-ever transgender participation policy in professional sports to aid both transmen and transwomen, was appointed Inclusion Leader for the NWHL Advisory Board, and was recognized in 2016 by The Hockey News as one of hockey’s 100 Top People of Power. Browne started his NCAA Division 1 college hockey career playing at Mercyhurst University (PA) for his award-winning rookie season. He then transferred to the University of Maine to continue playing and finish out the remaining three years of his college career before joining the NWHL’s Buffalo Beauts.

David Zach is the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Remedy Drive, as well as an advocate in the fight against human trafficking. When not touring with the band, he spends time overseas as a volunteer undercover operative with the abolitionist group The Exodus Road. He spends time in brothels and clubs in the red-light districts where underage girls and boys are sold by the hour. His role while undercover is to identify instances of minors being sold and to capture actionable evidence of their trafficking using covert gear, some of which is funded by the Remedy Drive community and fan base. That evidence is used to make rescues and arrests in partnership with local authorities. The idea ordinary human beings can impact change for freedom and justice is central to the message Zach brings to audiences across the world.

After college, social entrepreneur Andy Stoll set off on what would become a four-year, 40-country trip around the world to better understand how people live. He lived in a Buddhist Temple in Korea; worked in a dress factory in Bangkok; farmed in a mud hut village in Africa; lived the life of a cowboy in Australia; and played a 19th century British soldier in a Bollywood movie. Stoll delivers insightful and entertaining talks that artfully weave together themes of leadership, social entrepreneurship, travel and global perspective to help young people find answer to their most pressing (and often haunting) questions: “What do I want to do when I grow up?” “How can I find my place in the world?” “Can I change the world?” His message to students is clear: “The distance between who you are and what you want to become is closer than you think.”

Over 800,000 people are arrested for marijuana possession in the US each year – in the same country where our founding father, George Washington, grew marijuana on his farm. Now, legal marijuana is one of the fastest-growing industries in the US. Merwin Moe Spencer is a marijuana attorney and will introduce you to the history of marijuana growth and its use in the US, the political reasons why it became illegal, and the origins of its classification as a Schedule 1 narcotic (the same classification given to heroin). Nixon’s mandate for its Schedule 1 classification has had far-reaching consequences, from the economy to race relations and it continues to color our politics today. The climate is changing and people are divided on this issue. Spencer equips his audiences with the historical and legal facts to make up their own minds on this controversial topic.

Olivia Lane is dynamic, smart, funny and above all, an entertainer. Much of her confidence is rooted in her Texas upbringing. Her mother was a local Texas country singer who inspired her to sing and start writing songs at age 16. Lane ultimately landed in Nashville, where her self-titled debut EP stirred interest beyond Music Row in 2016. She’s influenced by Linda Ronstadt and Carole King, as well as by Shania Twain’s production and energy. “If I have to categorize myself, I’d have to say I’m pop country,” she said. “Growing up, I was a musical melting pot, but country music always had the lyrics that drew me in.” Most recently, Lane has been writing and recording new music with plans to release one song at a time directly to her fans, which she did with her last release, “Devil and You,” and is continuing to do with “You Got Me.”

AFC has created a refreshing yet timeless sound that combines Springsteen-era songwriting with modern indie rock akin to Bon Iver and Wilderado. Trigg Watson is a new breed of magician. He prefers his iPad to a deck of cards. He likes robots more than rabbits. Growing up in Townsville, Australia, he first caught the “magic bug” after witnessing a magician at a young friend’s fourth birthday party. Years later, he’s become known for his modern, high-tech take on magic. Fresh from his appearances on Pop TV’s “Don’t Blink,” “Masters of Illusion” and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” he’ll make you question what’s possible and have you laughing along the way.

“I don’t want to finish school. I wanna start a band.” No parent finds comfort in hearing these words, but the parents of Bela and Fernando Ferreira heard it twice. Menage is a Toronto brother/sister duo who signed a deal with iPLAY records out of Portugal in 2015. Radio rotation and two national tours in Portugal soon followed. In 2016, Menage issued a full-length release in China, and supported it with a 14-city tour that included performances at the famous MIDI and MTA festivals. In 2017, Menage signed with Strega Entertainment Group management, which includes distribution through the+SRG-ILS Group, alongside worldwide distribution through Universal Music Group, EMI Music Europe and Caroline/EMI USA. Now with their eyes on North America, Menage will soon be releasing new music with a tour and a changed generation to follow.

Chase Anthony was born in Atlanta, GA, raised in Minneapolis, MN and moved to Los Angeles after college. His style of comedy interjects a unique perspective on life, relationships and family dynamics (he grew up with four sisters). But he also deals with some tough topics, such as alcoholism and his absentee father. Sharing his experiences through humor affords him the opportunity to spread a positive message and make a difference. For the last two years, Anthony has toured as an opening act for the legendary comedian Sinbad. He has a day job as an actor, so you’ve seen him on hit television shows like “Lethal Weapon” and “Gray’s Anatomy.” Look for him in the new web series “A Whole New Irving.” Anthony lives by the saying, “Let’s talk about it.” He believes the ability to communicate what’s in your heart is where freedom lies.

Originally from Northern California, BT Kingsley came from diverse and humble beginnings, turning to stand-up comedy to help deal with his crazy world. His silly, fearless and wacky physical comedy style quickly became popular and garnered him a role in the feature film “Muslimah.” He also starred in, wrote and produced the romantic comedy “She Wins.” Other credits include “Joke Thief” and national TV commercials for Ford Motor Company and Skittles. Kevin Hart took notice and quickly cast him in his Comedy Central stand-up series. Kingsley headlines clubs across the country and features nationally for comedy legend Don “DC” Curry. He’s no stranger to breaking new ground in front of and behind the camera, as you can see from his own program “Necessary Drama,” the first dramatic series on Periscope, where he has 2.3 million hearts.

Lebanese-Syrian-Palestinian-Italian-American (try saying it really fast) Sammy Obeid knows a lot about mixin’ it up. After double majoring in business and math at UC Berkeley – which is why he does comedy now – Obeid blends his college experience with his love for being the life of the party, breaking down the latest trending topics into woke jokes that make you laugh your abs into a six pack while simultaneously getting smarter. Voted “Fastest Rising Star” in Campus Activities Magazine’s awards, he’s appeared on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and “Last Comic Standing” and TBS’s “Conan.” He often reminds strangers he was the first comedian to ever tell jokes on the Food Network (sorry, Rachel Ray). In 2013, he may have even impressed his parents by setting a world record by performing comedy 1,001 consecutive nights, and had his story featured in Time Magazine and The New York Times. Also, he’s running for president in 2036, so mark your calendar!
