2018 NACA® Northern Plains Regional Conference

Welcome!

Welcome to the 2018 NACA® Northern Plains Regional Conference! We have been working on this year’s conference since this time last year. I know that I speak for the entire Regional Conference Program Committee (RCPC) when I say that we’re very excited to see the culmination of our work and hope that you have a great experience. I think that our theme (chosen by popular vote at last year’s conference), To NACA and Beyond, is especially fitting for me and my involvement in NACA. NACA was one of the first professional associations in which I became involved and my experiences with the association helped me become involved in additional professional associations and take on increasing responsibilities at the various institutions where I have been employed. I hope you find that your experience at this year’s conference takes you “beyond,” as well. If you’re a student, I hope your experience takes you beyond the position that you currently hold on your campus and teaches you new skills to practice when you get back to campus. If you’re a staff member, I hope your experience takes you beyond your campus by helping you network with others and, perhaps, get involved in the 2019 RCPC. If you’re an associate member, I hope the conference takes you beyond St. Paul and allows you to visit campuses across our region. For all participants, I hope this conference takes you beyond your typical everyday experiences and allows you to appreciate diversity, to learn leadership skills, to make new friends, and to have the experience of doing business whether that’s from a school or associate member perspective. And, if you know me at all, you know I believe the most important thing for you to do is have fun! Enjoy your time at the conference and let me (or anyone on the RCPC) know if you have questions or feedback. Welcome to the conference and St. Paul! Cheers!

Shelly Mumma

Conference Notes At the Conference: • The full delegation should attend the Conference Dinner and all meal functions. • Discuss and assign educational sessions. Disperse members of your delegation to cover as many sessions as possible. Try not to have two or more members of your delegation at the same session. Balance the interests of your institution, student organization, and the individual when determining which sessions each delegate should attend. • Be sure to have a backup to your educational session selections, just in case of cancellation. • Encourage delegates to take copious notes and collect numerous resources to share with the other members of your organization, and take back to your institution. • Schedule delegation debriefing times after attending a block of sessions, showcases, and the conference as a whole so everyone receives the benefit of reflection and discussion on everyone’s experiences. • Each delegate should attend all of the showcases, including the sampler and lecture showcases. • Stop by each booth in the Campus Activities Marketplace to meet artists, performers, and agents and exchange information with them. • Be respectful of presenters at all educational sessions, showcases, and Closing Dinner and Awards presentation. • Sit near neighboring schools at all Block Booking meetings and conference meals to maximize your networking opportunities. This can definitely help bolster discussion regarding Block Booking opportunities, too. Get in on Foundation FUNdraising No matter whether you’re a NACA rookie or a seasoned veteran, you can help the NACA Foundation support scholarships for students, professionals and associate members while on-site at the conference. Be sure to stop by our booth and get your hands on one of our “25 Things to Do at NACA” lists, which highlight activities in which you can participate to make your experience that much better! Tune in to the NACA® App for details on buttons we’re selling, Best Seat in the House, and Penny Wars. Volunteer Opportunities Looking to have a rewarding time at Northern Plains? Want to see how things are done behind the scenes and help Northern Plains run as smoothly as possible? Sign up to volunteer with us! NACA® volunteers are a valued part of what we do and how we do it. The passion, dedication and commitment that our volunteers demonstrate is exemplary. There are many opportunities to volunteer at the Northern Plains Regional Conference, so we hope that you take advantage of a possibility that you will find both challenging and rewarding, as well as enjoy. Volunteering could consist of checking badges at the doors before showcases, helping with registration, helping the regional planning committee with tasks, counting participants during educational sessions, taking meal tickets, volunteering at the Volunteer Center, and much more. Sign up to volunteer on site at the Volunteer Center. Graphics Competition, School Swap and Student Social: Graphics Competition The NACA Northern Plains Regional Graphics Competition provides an opportunity for member institutions to learn from one another by displaying and recognizing creativity and innovation in publicity and promotion. Submissions will be on display Friday and Saturday in the Upper Level Rotunda, outside of the Showcase Ballroom. Be sure to check out and take note of the original and inventive works of our region!

2018 NACA® Northern Plains Regional Conference INCLUSION AT NACA® NORTHERN PLAINS Personal Gender Pronouns (PGPs) What is a PGP? A personal gender pronoun is the pronoun that a person chooses to use for themself. Why is it important to respect someone’s pronouns? You can’t always know what someone’s PGPs are just by looking at them. By disregarding someone’s PGPs you can make them feel invalidated, dismissed, disrespected, and/or dysphoric. PGPs can be printed directly on your name badge when you register, and PGP stickers will also be available throughout the conference (just ask for one at Registration). There are a variety of pronouns that people may use, but here are some commonly used ones: She/her/hers: Ren went to the gym so she could get fit He/him/his: Ren went to the gym so he could get fit They/them/theirs: Ren went to the gym so they could get fit Ze/zir/zirs: Ren went to the gym so ze could get fit Some people may not use pronouns and may want you to just use their name instead. Ex: Ren went to the gym so Ren could get fit. There may be other words that someone may ask you to use instead of the common pronouns and it’s important that you respect it. All-Gender Restrooms Some people don’t feel comfortable using men or women specific restrooms. These segregated spaces are not accessible to everyone, especially for trans and gender nonconforming folks. These restrictions cause quite the problem when someone needs to take a biology break. One of the best ways to combat this is access to all-gender restrooms. The great thing about all-gender restrooms is that they’re meant for everyone! This conference has both segregated and all-gender restrooms. All-gender restrooms can be found in Exhibit Hall A & B, as well as the North and South Side restrooms in the Upper Level. Segregated restrooms can be found on the first floor of the RiverCentre, and single-user family restrooms are located throughout the facility. Please feel free to use the one you feel most comfortable in. Nursing Mother’s Room The St. Paul RiverCentre features a Mother’s Room for comfort and privacy for nursing mothers. The room is located on the Street Level, near Headwaters Cafe. Additionally, family restrooms including changing stations are available throughout the Centre. After the conference: • Follow up with each attendee to determine if they achieved their learning outcomes. • Review the materials on showcasing acts and other acts/companies in which the delegation is interested. • Everyone should get together and review how the conference went for the delegation and follow up with the business contacts made. • Discuss all the educational sessions attended and share handouts with others so everyone receives the benefit of knowledge from as many sessions as possible. • Include students and staff from your institution who could not attend. • Be sure to complete the NACA® Northern Plains Regional Conference evaluation that will be emailed following the conference. Your feedback on all aspects of the conference significantly assists planning committee members in the coordination of the next conference. • Consider your involvement in planning next year’s conference. Apply for a Regional Conference Planning Committee position by April 23rd at www. naca.org/volunteer/pages/regionalpositions.aspx.

School Swap and Student Social We’re combining two great events this year - School Swap and our Student Social will take place on Thursday evening from 10:30-11:30 PM in the Minnesota West Room of the Interconinental Hotel. Participate in the fun atmosphere of the social, while networking and swapping ideas and campus goodies with others. Students will also have a chance to win over $300 in gift cards, courtesy of Promotions and Unicorns, Too. Schools are encouraged to pre-register for a table to display their events, publicity, promotional items - but don’t fear if you didn’t sign up ahead of time. Everyone is welcome.

To NACA and Beyond!

2018 NACA® Northern Plains Regional Conference NACA’s Mission The National Association for Campus Activities is a higher education organization providing members with the knowledge, ideas and resources to promote student learning through engagement in campus life. NACA’s Definition of Diversity Diversity is an attribute and a goal. As an attribute, diversity is ethnic identification/race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion, economic status and the many other aspects of our lives that define the family of humanity. As a goal, diversity refers to the intentional valuing, respecting and inclusion of all peoples. NACA recognizes the diversity of all its members and supports the development and implementation of programs and services that achieve this goal. Non-Discrimination, Diversity Advancement and Affirmative Action Principles NACA is committed to advancing diversity development and the principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action through its respective programs, services and volunteer involvement. To ensure compliance with these principles, the organization will: • Not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, economic status, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ethnic background or disability in any of their policies, procedures or practices. • Promote vigorous efforts to enhance, develop and increase a diverse volunteer pool in all areas of the Association. • Actively promote diversity in their programs and services. • E xpect all volunteers and NACA® Office staff to consistently display sensitivity to diversity and the principles of affirmative action. • Promote the importance of eliminating discriminatory and/or culturally insensitive language, behavior and content from NACA-sponsored activities and will urge all members and guests of the Association to cooperate in this effort. There is no intent to support censorship. The purpose is to induce thought and advance planning in an effort to ensure that showcase performances, Marketplace displays, educational sessions and other NACA-sponsored activities reflect appropriate diversity and sensitivity in their plans and actions. Civility Statement Prominent among the values that define the NACA community is civility, which includes mutual respect, fairness, and politeness. Membership in any community requires a concern for the common good for all who belong to that community. Each individual may possess different ideas, as well as different ways of communicating those ideas, particularly in a community as varied and diverse as an association. Because of these differences, respect and civility are integral to maintaining the quality of the association environment. Respect and civility should therefore be afforded to all individuals regardless of role within the association. This includes treating people with courtesy and consideration, acting and speaking judiciously and behaving professionally. All members of the association community are called upon to promote and value this ethic of common respect and civility. We will encourage discussion with a goal of instilling an appreciation for the importance of fair-mindedness, personal responsibility, and respect for differing opinions. At such occasions, members will always be strongly encouraged to observe common standards of decorum and to display a respectful tenor. We will also consider appropriate steps to be taken when members of our community do not respect these standards. Special Needs Although the Association strives to make all events accessible to all participants, including individuals with disabilities or special needs, where reasonably possible, not all special needs may be accommodated at all sites. If the Association is unable to provide the special service(s) requested by a delegate and the delegate does not attend the event, the Association will refund the registration fee.

NACA® Policies Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Policy The National Association for Campus Activities and the NACA® Foundation recognize the serious threats that alcohol and other substance abuse present to college populations, the entertainment industry, and to society as a whole. We realize that our Association is not immune to the problems associated with abuse. NACA is committed to addressing this issue through various activities, programs and educational efforts on regional and national levels. All NACA® members and volunteers are encouraged to uphold the Association’s statement in spirit and action; however, NACA has no responsibility for the conduct or behavior of event attendees. Alcohol served outside of any official event (an official event is one endorsed or hosted by NACA) is not the responsibility of NACA, but is instead the responsibility of the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity. All responsibility for determining whether participants at the activity are underage and for complying with applicable state and local laws rests solely with the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity, and is not in any way the responsibility of NACA or any of its employees or representatives. In the event that NACA becomes the subject of a claim or loss arising from violation of this policy by any person, group or business entity, or service of alcohol at any non-official event, that person, group or business entity agrees that it shall indemnify and hold harmless NACA from and against all resulting claims and losses, including NACA’s costs and attorney’s fees, that arise from or relate to violation of this policy and/or service of alcohol at said non-official event. Videotaping/Photography Policies NACA photographs and videotapes regional events and attendees. These photographs and videotapes may be used in any NACA® materials and publications, and on the NACA® website. By attending this event, you, your delegates and/or the acts that you represent give NACA your consent to use photographs and videotapes in which you, your delegates and/or your acts appear. NACA® delegates or other persons may use photographic, videotape or other image and sound recording devices to record events and activities that take place during NACA® events, as long as these activities do not interfere with the audience enjoyment of or participation in NACA® events. Those photographing, videotaping or otherwise recording events cannot interfere with showcase technical crew, stagehands, etc. The following specific guidelines apply to any photography, videotaping or other recording at an NACA® event: • Professional crews will not be allowed. • On-stage filming or placement will not be allowed. Recording must occur from the show floor. • Access to the soundboard will not be allowed. • Audience views cannot be obstructed. • Power must be self-contained (i.e., battery packs). Access to the event power supply will not be allowed. • Use of supplemental lighting will not be allowed. • Some forms of recording/taping may not be available at specific venues due to union or other facility regulations. • Recording/taping of some materials may require the permission of the owner of such materials, and it is the recorder’s responsibility to obtain such necessary permissions. • If audience members, showcase crew or other technical, conference or facility staff complain about the position of a camera/operator, the camera/operator will be asked to move. If the camera/operator does not comply, they will not be allowed to continue taping. BY USING VIDEOGRAPHIC AND/OR OTHER RECORDING DEVICES TO RECORD NACA® EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, THE RECORDER REPRESENTS THAT HE/SHE HAS OBTAINED ALL NECESSARY PERMISSIONS FROM ANY COPYRIGHT HOLDERS OR OTHER ENTITIES WHOSE RIGHTS MAY BE AFFECTED. THE RECORDER AGREES TO INDEMNIFY NACA, ITS EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS AND INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY ARISING FROM THE RECORDER’S VIDEOTAPING OR RECORDING ACTIVITIES.

Event Cancellation Policy NACA reserves the right to cancel any program. Causes for cancellation may include, but are not limited to, low participation by schools and/or associates, acts of God, etc. In the case of a program cancellation, NACA will only reimburse fees paid to NACA; any travel, lodging or other non-NACA® fees will not be reimbursed.

I Love Female Orgasm combines sex education and women’s empowerment with a hearty dose of laughter. We bring a playful, honest approach to this topic, packing the house on college campuses. With warmth and humor, we illuminate the subject of female orgasm for everyone, whether you want to have your first one, you’re hoping to help your partner, or you’re debating the existence of the G-spot or “to fake or not to fake?”. Students love that we work in pairs, bringing multiple perspectives to the conversation. Administrators often compliment us on presenting “sexy” material in a tasteful, appropriate manner. And we know that sexual assault prevention is most effective when it also provides models for positive, healthy sexuality. The program, of www.sexualityeducation.com, has been presented over 600 times in 40 states and is often praised for being extremely inclusive of people of all genders, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

As seen on/in The Muse, ForbesWoman, and The New York Times, Hilary Corna is a bestselling author and is the co-founder and chief operating officer of GetLeverage.com. After college, Hilary went against everyone’s advice and bought a one-way ticket from Ohio to Singapore with hopes of launching her career in Asia after studying Japanese for four years. Without a job or a safety net, her tenacity led to a senior executive officer position at Toyota Asia and her book, “One White Face,” which is now being made into a movie! Having never seen a female speaker at her campus in four years of college, Hilary’s next dare for herself was to start a female-only speaker agency with the mission of increasing female representation in lectures. She speaks on the topics of leadership with a global perspective, cultural diversity and inclusion, and women’s empowerment. Her programs are perfect for orientation, welcome week, first-year programs, leadership keynotes, and Women’s History Month. Chinedu Unaka is a Nigerian-American, born and raised in Los Angeles, who believes wholeheartedly in laughter, good people and french fries (lots). His style of comedy is inspired by everyday things, like emojis, and not so everyday things, like his years working as an inner-city special education teacher or his African mother’s love for leather belts. Right now, sharing laughter and hugs is his way of giving back, until he can afford to give more. He’s done a tour of Greece, Egypt and Jordan for our troops, and previously toured through India and Dubai. Chinedu was just featured on HBO’s “The Big Chop,” Hulu’s “The Mindy Project,” Kevin Hart’s LOL Network and Hulu’s “Coming to the Stage.” He’s toured colleges nationwide from USC to Cornell, was a finalist on NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity competition, wrote for Showtime, and currently tours with Damon Wayans, Jr.

In the past, Ali Kolbert was an NBC Page – where she worked on shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon,” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” Recently, Ali made her television debut in that very building, on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Ali has worked as a contributing writer at The Onion and her clever and provocative stand-up won her the title of Stage 72’s “Greatest New Comedian.” She recently performed in the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival in Atlanta. Ali’s writing credits include “Above Average.” Ali performs stand-up comedy nightly in New York City bars and clubs. She even once impersonated Reese Witherspoon on “The Howard Stern Show.”

Amidst the uprising in Ferguson, seven St. Louis college students evolved as advocates and activists as they demanded change through policy and protest. “Show Me Democracy” is the powerful documentary about those efforts. The film functions as a powerful tool that educates young people on the power they have to affect change and the need for educational advocacy. Too often, young people are dismissed as a group without the right to have their views considered or their interests represented at any level of decision making. One of the film’s taglines represents that well: “Nothing about me, without me.” Your students will realize they have the capacity, potential, power and right to speak up on those issues that directly affect them and their peers. On campus, there is a film screening, then post-film discussion. The director and two activists will showcase. Two activists will come to your campus.

He lived in a Buddhist Temple in Korea; worked in a dress factory in Bangkok; farmed in a mud hut village in Africa; lived the life of a cowboy in Australia; and played a 19th Century British soldier in a Bollywood movie. Andy delivers insightful and entertaining talks that artfully weave together themes of leadership, social entrepreneurship, travel and global perspective to help young people find answers to their most pressing (and often haunting) questions: “What do I want to do when I grow up?” “How can I find my place in the world?” “Can I change the world?” Andy’s message to students is clear: “The distance between who you are and what you want to become is closer than you think.”

Chase Anthony was born in Atlanta, GA, raised in Minneapolis, MN, and moved to Los Angeles after college. Chase’s style of comedy interjects a unique perspective on life, relationships, and family dynamics growing up with four sisters. But, he also deals with some tough topics, such as an absentee father and alcoholism. Sharing his experiences through humor affords him the opportunity to spread a positive message and make a difference. For the last two years, Chase has traveled the country as the opening act to the legendary comedian Sinbad. He has a day job as an actor, so you’ve seen him on hit television shows like “Lethal Weapon” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” Look for him in the new web series, “A Whole New Irving.” Chase lives by the saying, “Let’s talk about it.” The ability to communicate what is in your heart is where freedom lies.

Dane’s musical roots trace back to his parent’s rich musical upbringing in San Francisco. Coming from a mixed-race background – Mom was a South Korean refugee, and Dad is of European-mixed descent – made for an interesting childhood based on jazz, R & B, and classic rock. Both parents played in various bands together all over the West Coast. Dane grew up singing along to bands like the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and everything in between. In 2017, Dane released his first solo studio EP since relocating to Los Angeles, CA. The album has been receiving praise across the board for its blend of musical styles and familiar, yet edgy, sound. The songs from this EP are currently being considered for licensing and placement opportunities in film and TV.

Olivia Harewood’s comedy is based on multiculturalism, feminism, enthusiasm, and a distinctly Millennial brand of passive aggression, e.g. “ummmmm sure...”. Her playful incisiveness landed her on the Anchor radio app, where she delivers the Entertainment Rundown twice daily. She is also known for her collaboration with YouTube titan David So, “Love Fights,” and for her role in the web series/cultural phenomenon “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.”

Gospel Lee is an individual who deeply believes in “bringing light to dark places” through culturally relevant, positive, inspirational hip-hop. He has carefully crafted his raw, energetic, emotional sound into one of unbridled passion as heard in Gospel Lee’s “atomic soda can” delivery. In addition to his dynamic live show, Gospel Lee is also known for his uncanny freestyling prowess, composing entire songs from audience-selected topics spontaneously. It is this desire to bring light to dark places that has allowed him to open for such Grammy Award-winners as Switchfoot, Lecrae, and Tobymac.

This is more of an autobio than a bio. I’ve been on “The Late Late Show” on CBS in addition to Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham.” I live in Fergus Falls, MN. I performed at the Aspen Comedy Festival for Rooftop Comedy and was given the award for Comic’s Comic. I have a half-hour special called “Comedy Central Presents - Chad Daniels,” which was voted No. 5 of all time on the network. I am one of 13 comedians that have the honor to say they were on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.” I won the Gilda’s Laughfest Competition, have also performed on Conan’s new TBS’ show twice, and released a free one-hour special called, “As Is,” on the Internet. I’m funny. If you’re still not willing to book me, you’re just being difficult. ;)
