WELCOME LETTER

Dear Conference Delegates, Welcome to Buffalo! We are so excited to be back in Buffalo for the 2018 NACA® Mid Atlantic Regional Conference. On behalf of NACA and the Regional Conference Program Committee, we wish you a great conference. Our theme this year is #NoFilter: Be Your Best Self(ie). Our conference committee has been inspired by recent social media movements that have affected positive change. #NoFilter has been used by social media users to label selfies that are free of any filters or any other enhancements. Many use it to promote a positive self-image of themselves. As you attend our regional conference, we encourage you to be your best self, free of filters and full of positivity. Our conference committee has provided you with many ways to be your best self. Embrace your cultural identity at our Pride Selfie Station and our Diversity Social, and by checking out our Latinx Heritage Month slideshow at one of our conference meals. New to our region this year, we will have an entire educational session block dedicated to diversity and inclusion, as well as affinity group meet-ups so you can connect and engage with conference delegates within your identity group. We also challenge you to remove all of your filters and let us get to know you. Take this opportunity to meet new friends and professional colleagues. Be sure to take selfies with your new connections and use our conference hashtag #NACAMAT (and of course #NoFilter). Be open to new experiences and step out of your comfort zone! And don’t forget to volunteer on site here during the conference. We are super excited for our showcases and all of our vendors featured in our Campus Activities Marketplace. Get to know our agents and performers by signing up for the Adopt-an-Associate program, which will feature new opportunities for engagement! Likewise, let’s save some money by forming blocks at Block Booking and submitting interest forms via NACA 24/7! Help us raise funds for the NACA Foundation! The Foundation awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students, but also provides funding opportunities for professional staff and associate members. There are 14 scholarships available in the Mid Atlantic Region, in addition to the general scholarships available to everyone. To donate to the NACA Foundation, be sure to bid on items in the Silent Auction, buy a raffle ticket for Best Seat in the House, and eat at a participating restaurant during our Dine and Donate Friday Night. Be your best self(ie) throughout the conference! Please stop me and ask me any questions or to take a selfie! Sincerely,

Clinton Neill

CONFERENCE NOTES

NACAÂŽ MID ATLANTIC REGIONAL CONFERENCE

Hey! Where are the Ed Sessions? As you may have already noticed, Educational Session descriptions are nowhere to be found in this conference program. Why? Well, in an effort to provide you with the most up-to-date content, we decided this year to allow session presenters to submit their topics later than usual. That means presenters are planning new sessions while we at NACA HQ are busy designing and printing the conference program. But don’t worry—you can find all the session descriptions, presenters and room assignments in the NACAŽ App. And there will be a limited number of paper handouts listing the session titles and locations, available at registration (so get there early!) So download the app, set your schedule, and get your learning on!

Conference Theme Our theme this year is #NoFilter: Be Your Best Self(ie). NACA® POLICIES Definition of Diversity Diversity is an attribute and a goal. As an attribute, diversity is ethnic identification/race, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion, economic status and the many other aspects of our lives which define the family of humanity. As a goal, diversity refers to the intentional valuing, respecting and inclusion of all peoples. NACA recognizes the diversity of all its members and supports the development and implementation of programs and services that achieve this goal. Non-Discrimination, Diversity Advancement and Affirmative Action Principles NACA is committed to advancing diversity development and the principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action through its respective programs, services and volunteer involvement. To ensure compliance with these principles, the organization will: • Not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, economic status, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ethnic background or disability in any of their policies, procedures or practices. • Promote vigorous efforts to enhance, develop and increase a diverse volunteer pool in all areas of the Association. • Actively promote diversity in its programs and services. • Expect all volunteers and NACA Office staff to consistently display sensitivity to diversity and the principles of affirmative action. • Promote the importance of eliminating discriminatory and/ or culturally insensitive language, behavior and content from NACA-sponsored activities and will urge all members and guests of the Association to cooperate in this effort. There is no intent to support censorship. The purpose is to induce thought and advance planning in an effort to ensure that showcase performances, Campus Activities Marketplace displays, educational sessions and other NACA-sponsored activities reflect appropriate diversity and sensitivity in their plans and actions. Civility Statement Prominent among the values that define the NACA community is civility, which includes mutual respect, fairness, and politeness. Membership in any community requires a concern for the common good for all who belong to that community. Each individual may possess different ideas, as well as different ways of communicating those ideas, particularly in a community as varied and diverse as an association. Because of these differences, respect and civility are integral to maintaining the quality of the association environment. Respect and civility should therefore be afforded to all individuals regardless of role within the association. This includes treating people with courtesy and consideration, acting and speaking judiciously and behaving professionally. All members of the association community are called upon to promote and value this ethic of common respect and civility. We will encourage discussion with a goal of instilling an appreciation for the importance of fair-mindedness, personal responsibility, and respect for differing opinions. At such occasions, members will always be strongly encouraged to observe common standards of decorum and to display a respectful tenor. We will also consider appropriate steps to be taken when members of our community do not respect these standards. Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Policy The National Association for Campus Activities and the NACA® Foundation recognize the serious threats that alcohol and other substance abuse present to college populations, the entertainment industry, and to society as a whole. We realize that our Association is not immune to the problems associated with abuse. NACA is committed to addressing this issue through various activities, programs and educational efforts on regional and national levels. All NACA® members and volunteers are encouraged to uphold the Association’s statement in spirit and action; however, NACA has no responsibility for the conduct or behavior of event attendees.

8

NACA® MID ATLANTIC REGIONAL CONFERENCE Alcohol served outside of any official event (an official event is one endorsed or hosted by NACA) is not the responsibility of NACA, but is instead the responsibility of the individual/group/ firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity. All responsibility for determining whether participants at the activity are underage and for complying with applicable state and local laws rests solely with the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity, and is not in any way the responsibility of NACA or any of its employees or representatives. In the event that NACA becomes the subject of a claim or loss arising from violation of this policy by any person, group or business entity, or service of alcohol at any non-official event, that person, group or business entity agrees that it shall indemnify and hold harmless NACA from and against all resulting claims and losses, including NACA’s costs and attorney’s fees, that arise from or relate to violation of this policy and/or service of alcohol at said non-official event. Special Needs Although the Association strives to make all events accessible to all participants, including individuals with disabilities or special needs, where reasonably possible, not all special needs may be accommodated at all sites. If the Association is unable to provide the special service(s) requested by a delegate and the delegate does not attend the event, the Association will refund the registration fee. Videotaping/Photography Policies NACA photographs and videotapes regional events and attendees. These photographs and videotapes may be used in any NACA® materials and publications, and on the NACA website. By attending this event, you, your delegates and/or the acts that you represent give NACA your consent to use photographs and videotapes in which you, your delegates and/or your acts appear. NACA® delegates or other persons may use photographic, videotape or other image and sound recording devices to record events and activities that take place during NACA® events, as long as these activities do not interfere with the audience enjoyment of or participation in NACA® events. Those photographing, videotaping or otherwise recording events cannot interfere with showcase technical crew, stagehands, etc. The following specific guidelines apply to any photography, videotaping or other recording at an NACA® event: • Professional crews will not be allowed. • On-stage filming or placement will not be allowed. Recording must occur from the show floor. • Access to the soundboard will not be allowed. • Audience views cannot be obstructed. • Power must be self-contained (i.e., battery packs). Access to the event power supply will not be allowed. • Use of supplemental lighting will not be allowed. • Some forms of recording/taping may not be available at specific venues due to union or other facility regulations. • Recording/taping of some materials may require the permission of the owner of such materials, and it is the recorder’s responsibility to obtain such necessary permissions. • If audience members, showcase crew or other technical, conference or facility staff complain about the position of a camera/operator, the camera/operator will be asked to move. If the camera/operator does not comply, they will not be allowed to continue taping. By using videographic and/or other recording devices to record NACA® events and activities, the recorder represents that he/she has obtained all necessary permissions from any copyright holders or other entities whose rights may be affected. The recorder agrees to indemnify NACA, its employees, agents, officers, directors and independent contractors from any and all liability arising from the recorder’s videotaping or recording activities.

We ask that all attendees report any questionable or concerning activity to NACA staff so that they can take immediate action. No concern is too small; if you see something, say something. • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. • Use the buddy system when walking to and from the event venue, networking event locations during early or late hours. • Don’t wear your meeting badge on the street. Take it off as soon as you leave the building/venue. • Don’t carry a lot of cash or credit cards. Leave in your hotel room safe. • Don’t leave personal property unattended anywhere, anytime. BE YOUR BEST SELF(ie)

NACA® POLICIES Unacceptable Behavior NACA has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or harassment, including but not limited to sexual harassment by participants or our staff at our meetings. If you experience harassment or hear of any incidents of unacceptable behavior, NACA asks that you complete the information found on the Incident Report Form so that we can take appropriate action if necessary. In the event you do not receive a response to your filed report form within 20 days please direct an email to the Executive Director of NACA. • Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form. • Physical or verbal abuse of any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, NACA staff member, service provider, or other meeting guest. • Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to, verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, national origin, inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images in public spaces or in presentations, or threatening or stalking any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, NACA staff member, service provider, or other meeting guest. • Disruption of presentations at sessions, in the exhibit hall, or at other events organized by NACA at the meeting venue, hotels, or other NACA-contracted facilities. Bias Definition Bias targets a marginalized identity whether real or perceived to be a part of a recognizable group or affiliation. Legally protected identities include: actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, or disability. NACA also recognizes that bias may occur as a result of one’s actual or perceived age, ancestry, sex, gender expression, citizenship or immigration status, marital status, socio-economic class, or religious practice. The second list of identities are not legally protected identities in the United States but are affirmed through NACA’s Core Values of diversity, multicultural competence, and human dignity. NACA reserves the right to take any action deemed necessary and appropriate, including immediate removal from the meeting without warning or refund, in response to any incident of unacceptable behavior, and NACA reserves the right to prohibit attendance at any future meeting.

In the music industry today, inspiring and making a true connection with your audience is a lost art. This is where Lauren Light’s story begins. Lauren has the ability to connect and provide an unmatched energy and musicality like no other. Her sound is often compared to the likes of Adele, Katy Perry, Alanis Morissette, and Fiona Apple, but Lauren’s style is defined by a unique quality all its own. On stage, she artfully crafts the perfect blend of rock, pop, storytelling and powerfully soulful vocals. Her performances have a way of transcending the typical expectation of what a live music experience can be, consistently showcasing something new and different with each set played. No matter the venue space, Lauren Light’s music and performance remain powerful and true.

Jason Boring has worked with students for over a decade, giving his travel talk to colleges across the country. Holding a master’s in higher education administration, Jason understands how to shape the learning outcomes of his talk to the unique needs of the students. He strongly believes that if you want a student to develop as a person, you should immerse them in new experiences and cultures. Subscribing to Astin’s I-E-O model of student development, Jason utilizes this theory, along with the Challenge and Support model, to shape his talk and interact with students. His personal drive has allowed him to travel the world, crossing the country and circumnavigating the globe. He has spent extensive time in South America, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and Africa, providing him a wealth of experience in relation to the developing world.

Drew Dunn is a New Hampshire-based stand-up comedian who performs all over the country. He began performing at 21 and has not looked back. He quickly established himself as one of the region’s fastest-rising comedians. Living on both coasts and coming from a big family gives this comedian a unique perspective. On top of winning and being a finalist in many festivals and competitions in the region, he was also featured in the prestigious Great American Comedy Festival in Johnny Carson’s hometown of Norfolk, NE. Most recently, Drew won the 17th Annual Boston Comedy Festival.

Originally from London, Charles Berthoud [pronounced BEAR-too] has been very busy since moving to Boston in 2011. While studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Charles played over 300 shows in all four corners of the US, opening for acts such as the Goo Goo Dolls and Christina Perri. He co-wrote and published an instructional book that teaches his signature two-handed tapping style of bass playing, and his original music has appeared on national TV channels such as Univision. Now, Charles is changing the way we think about the bass guitar. His years of training and performing have led to his unique mastery of the bass as a solo instrument. Combining that with beat boxing, Charles covers popular songs from Disney and artists such as Ed Sheeran and Meghan Trainor in a way that’s never been seen, and writes beautiful original music.

Olivia continues to preform on the East Coast for all different types of events and helps with charitable organizations in her area. She’s recently teamed up with She’s Somebody’s Daughter to raise awareness for human trafficking. She used her latest EP to raise money for the Fill a Glass with Hope Campaign, which helps feed children through charitable fresh milk in Pennsylvania. That project raised over $1,500 from the EP sales. Olivia also donates a percentage of her tips to the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors.

When not doing stand-up Jeffrey participates in ally training and education on transgender issues, enjoys creating elaborate stick figures, and plays video games way longer than he should. His humor has been described as “fresh” and “original.” I’m not sure what that means but it’s supposed to be a compliment. Lauren Faber is a feral comedian who was raised in a basement by the ‘90s comedy specials of Ellen Degeneres, Paula Poundstone and Elvira Kurt. (Yes, she sees the connection now.) A heckler once asked her, “What is this, PBS?!” and they were right to do so. When she isn’t mortifying her mother, Lauren can be found saving the world with spreadsheets and liking one of her two cats. They were a gift. Don’t do that. Lauren won the titles of New York City’s She-Devil and Carolina’s Funniest Comic and once found herself on public radio with Maria Bamford. The Icarus Account is an acoustic/pop duo made up of twin brothers Ty and Trey Turner. Starting humbly by writing and recording songs in their college dorm room, the brothers have turned a lifelong dream into a musical career. Their live show consists of classic covers and catchy originals with tight harmonies and pure falsettos. Their original music has been featured on several commercials and TV shows, as well as by Snapchat. Their most recent full-length album made the top 10 on the iTunes singer-songwriter charts. They’ve shared the stage with other great artists such as American Authors, Twenty-One Pilots, Plain White T’s, He Is We, Aaron Gillespie and many others. While the brothers live in Florida, they spend much of their time on the road performing over 100 dates a year.

Art of Everyone thoroughly engages an audience and unlocks its creativity by putting the power of painting in the hands of anyone who wants to experience the joy and freedom of self-expression. It’s big and bold and open-minded. With paint stick in hand, participants follow the lead of an artist conductor. Any technical skills or special abilities are unnecessary.

From a young age, Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir knew she wanted basketball to be a part of her life. After first picking up a ball at the age of four at a local YMCA, Bilqis’ love for the game began. Living in a practicing Muslim household, Bilqis was to follow her religious beliefs as she grew older. She began wearing a hijab, a traditional head covering for Muslim women. After record-breaking performances in high school and collegiate basketball, her dream to play professionally quickly ended due to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rule prohibiting headgear larger than five inches. Unwilling to stray in her beliefs, Bilqis chose faith over basketball. Bilqis raised her voice for the next generation while her own dream was benched. In May 2017, FIBA overturned the hijab ban.

This unique program has performed for the US Navy and Army and hundreds of colleges. The presenters have a realistic interactive discussion about the destructive and deadly consequences of alcohol abuse, assault, DUIs, health issues and more. This program was created by health professionals, local police and members of various alcohol rehab programs. The two presenters not only use comedy to engage the audience, but they also attack the serious weight of this national campus epidemic. A Shot of Reality is a fresh take on a popular topic and is many schools’ favorite program to satisfy alcohol awareness training, especially for orientation. If you’re looking for the best way to educate your students on responsible behavior when encountering alcohol, this is it.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, singer-songwriter Jesse Labelle meshes modern country music with classic country lyricism and highenergy guitar playing to deliver an unforgettable performance whenever he takes the stage. Having attended high school with classmate Aubrey Graham (Drake), the two would go on to follow very different but distinct musical paths, both sharing the same penchant for hit songwriting that forges a special connection with their listeners, and an ever commanding stage presence that keeps their crowds coming back. Jesse’s massive touring experience has led him to opening spots for everyone from Keith Urban to Elton John. Whether in a stadium, theater or club, Jesse keeps the audience always on their feet. His newest EP is slated for release this fall (2018) and will feature the hit singles, “Another You,” “Get Away With It” and “Two Hearts & A Diamond,” among others.

Gibran Saleem was born in North Carolina and raised in Virginia in a Pakistani household. He started comedy while attending graduate school for psychology at New York University. While there, he was handpicked as an MVP nominee on the national TBS Rooftop Comedy College Competition and was a two-time recipient of the UCB diversity scholarship. Since then, Gibran has been featured on MTV Iggy and Popcornflix, and has performed his stand-up television debut on “Gotham Comedy Live” for AXS TV. He’s been featured nationally in the prestigious New York Comedy Festival and Boston Comedy Festival, and won first place in the Hoboken Comedy Festival. Recently, Gibran was one of six individuals selected out of 1,000 submissions to be a part of the exclusive NBC Universal Late Night TV Writer’s Workshop and is taking his third year in the NACA market by storm with stellar reviews from countless colleges thus far!

Fans fell for Nick Fradiani as he soared through “American Idol,” claiming the champion title in 2015 and releasing his debut solo project, “Hurricane.” Fradiani’s most recent work was his independently released EP titled, “Where We Left Off,” in October of 2017. “When we got back into the studio, I wanted to find a way to express how far we’ve come and the direction we’re headed,” shared Fradiani. “These songs encompass the feelings I had as we created ‘Where We Left Off’ and I hope that it shows.” Now settled from the whirlwind of television shows and record deals, the singer-songwriter is focused on translating his next body of work into live performances because, at the root of it all, his fans make him the artist he is today. Fradiani has shared the stage with notable acts like Bon Jovi, One Republic, DNCE, Rachel Platten, James Bay and Rob Thomas.

LET’S PLAY! Eric O’Shea has earned standing ovation after standing ovation, so get ready to witness not only a comedy show, but also an EVENT! With over four million hits on YouTube, and being nominated SIX TIMES for Campus Activities Magazine’s “National Comedy Performer of the Year,” Eric is one of the best! He’s a veteran performer of over 1,800 colleges and universities, so let Eric’s clean wit and priceless observations take you through your embarrassing childhood and hidden everyday moments that drive you insane! WARNING! Thanks to a little A.D.D., this show gets randomly wild! Yes, including the voice of Elmo! Eric’s unique, high-energy show is unlike anything you’ve ever heard…including his world-famous “Songs for Commercials” that was performed at the Creative Emmy Awards in L.A on the E! Network! (Eric also hugged Betty White – awww!)

In the spring of 2018, Cat Alvarado made her TV debut on “The First Nations Comedy Experience.” Raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, CA, Cat is part Native Central American by way of her Nicaraguan mother. Growing up in a conservative home, she got married at 19, only to get divorced at 21. Her stand-up is honest, reflective, biographical and satirical. She tackles a woman’s experience in dating, dealing with beauty standards, and drawing meaning from her heritage and the current ongoing fight for democracy in Nicaragua. She’s performed at festivals, including the highly selective Laughing Skull Comedy Festival in both 2017 and 2018, and you can hear her on Sirius XM Radio. She also has nearly one million views on YouTube as a frequent co-host on “The Reel Rejects with Greg Alba.”

With superstar DJs like Skrillex and Diplo selling out arena tours, and with more kids picking up turntables than are picking up guitars, it seems we really are in an era where “everyone wants to be a DJ.” With our unique event, that’s exactly what your students will be able to do. They can learn the skills required from our resident DJs at our hands-on “Be The DJ” masterclass and then put them to use in front of their fellow students by spinning at our insane “Light It Up” dance party. On one side, our event is a unique and truly interactive experience based on “learning outcomes” designed to teach students about creative expression through turntablism and DJ culture. On the other, it’s a massive dance party designed to drive footfall to your late-night programming and, most importantly, to be fun! Educational, inspirational and a great night out.

Who says fitness can’t be fun? At Silent Fit Club, we’ve developed a new concept that blends elements of yoga and Zumba with technology and all the energy and fun of a clubbing experience. It’s a workout for the mind and the body, sound-tracked by our resident DJ’s selection of only the very best in party anthems. Less “health club” and more “nightclub,” each journey starts with a session of yoga before we raise the tempo during our fun, cardio, dance-based workouts, re-capturing the exhilaration and excitement of a full-on party! And it all plays out through our cutting-edge, wireless headphones. Our customized headphones help create the amazing dynamic that make our event unique. Rather than broadcasting our range of classes through a PA system, we broadcast directly into your ears through our immersive wireless technology. This improves connection with your instructor and replaces distracting outside noise with direct, in-ear communication.
