NACA® MID AMERICA 2017 REGIONAL CONFERENCE

WELCOME!

Welcome to the NACA® Mid America Conference! Take a look at all of the works of art around you. Whether it be through music, paint, sculpture, writing, or performance, art gives us the ability to express ourselves, our feelings, and our history. Anyone can be an artist. YOU are an artist. The work we do in campus activities is a work of art. Our creativity, community building, intentional planning, inclusivity, and ability to take risks give us the ability to reach students in a way that no other campus entity has the ability to do. I hope you are ready to explore new ways of succeeding in campus activities through this year’s “The Art of NACA” theme. The quality and diversity of the programs, events and services offered at this year’s NACA® Mid America Conference reflect the entire spectrum of the rainbow and will be sure to color your mind with new opportunities. Think about joining an educational session track to further explore diversity and inclusion, innovation, or learning outcomes and assessment. Meet successful students throughout the region by engaging in our new Student Networking Session. Explore the Campus Activities Marketplace and find exciting opportunities to book new artists and work with great associate members. Countless volunteers have been “coloring outside the lines” for months to provide you with unique, creative opportunities before, during and after this conference. I’m forever appreciative of every volunteer from the showcase selection team, educational program review committee, stage crew, graduate interns, Leadership Fellows, on-site volunteers, awards committee and more! But, I could not go on without recognizing the amazing artists that are the Regional Conference Program Committee. This group of graduate and undergraduate students, professionals and associates is one of the most talented, artistic, creative group of leaders that I’ve had the privilege to work with. Please take the time to thank them and recognize them throughout this conference! If there is anything our team can do to make your conference experience more meaningful, do not hesitate to reach out to us in person or via social media (@theNACAMAM). We continually strive to provide great programs to help you succeed! I hope this conference gives you the artistic tools to create a masterpiece on your campus! Get ready to color outside the lines and enjoy NACA® Mid America 2017! Ally Randolph Crust 2017 NACA® Mid America Regional Conference Chairperson Twitter: @allyr05 | Email: acrust@maryville.edu

THE ART OF NACA: COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES

NACA® MID AMERICA 2017 REGIONAL CONFERENCE NACA’s Mission The National Association for Campus Activities is a higher education organization providing members with the knowledge, ideas and resources to promote student learning through engagement in campus life. NACA’s Definition of Diversity Diversity is an attribute and a goal. As an attribute, diversity is ethnic identification/race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion, economic status and the many other aspects of our lives that define the family of humanity. As a goal, diversity refers to the intentional valuing, respecting and inclusion of all peoples. NACA recognizes the diversity of all its members and supports the development and implementation of programs and services that achieve this goal. Non-Discrimination, Diversity Advancement and Affirmative Action Principles NACA is committed to advancing diversity development and the principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action through its respective programs, services and volunteer involvement. To ensure compliance with these principles, the organization will: • Not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, economic status, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ethnic background or disability in any of their policies, procedures or practices. • Promote vigorous efforts to enhance, develop and increase a diverse volunteer pool in all areas of the Association. • Actively promote diversity in their programs and services. • Expect all volunteers and NACA® Office staff to consistently display sensitivity to diversity and the principles of affirmative action. • Promote the importance of eliminating discriminatory and/or culturally insensitive language, behavior and content from NACAsponsored activities and will urge all members and guests of the Association to cooperate in this effort. There is no intent to support censorship. The purpose is to induce thought and advance planning in an effort to ensure that showcase performances, Campus Activities Marketplace displays, educational sessions and other NACA-sponsored activities reflect appropriate diversity and sensitivity in their plans and actions. Civility Statement Prominent among the values that define the NACA community is civility, which includes mutual respect, fairness, and politeness. Membership in any community requires a concern for the common good for all who belong to that community. Each individual may possess different ideas, as well as different ways of communicating those ideas, particularly in a community as varied and diverse as an association. Because of these differences, respect and civility are integral to maintaining the quality of the association environment. Respect and civility should therefore be afforded to all individuals regardless of role within the association. This includes treating people with courtesy and consideration, acting and speaking judiciously and behaving professionally. All members of the association community are called upon to promote and value this ethic of common respect and civility. We will encourage discussion with a goal of instilling an appreciation for the importance of fair-mindedness, personal responsibility, and respect for differing opinions. At such occasions, members will always be strongly encouraged to observe common standards of decorum and to display a respectful tenor. We will also consider appropriate steps to be taken when members of our community do not respect these standards. Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Policy The National Association for Campus Activities and the NACA® Foundation recognize the serious threats that alcohol and other substance abuse present to college populations, the entertainment industry, and to society as a whole. We realize that our Association is not immune to the problems associated with abuse. NACA is committed to addressing this issue through various activities, programs and educational efforts on regional and national levels. All NACA® members and volunteers are encouraged to uphold the Association’s statement in spirit and action; however, NACA has no responsibility for the conduct or behavior of event attendees.

#NACAMAM

NACA® POLICIES Alcohol served outside of any official event (an official event is one endorsed or hosted by NACA) is not the responsibility of NACA, but is instead the responsibility of the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity. All responsibility for determining whether participants at the activity are underage and for complying with applicable state and local laws rests solely with the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity, and is not in any way the responsibility of NACA or any of its employees or representatives. In the event that NACA becomes the subject of a claim or loss arising from violation of this policy by any person, group or business entity, or service of alcohol at any non-official event, that person, group or business entity agrees that it shall indemnify and hold harmless NACA from and against all resulting claims and losses, including NACA’s costs and attorney’s fees, that arise from or relate to violation of this policy and/or service of alcohol at said non-official event. If the camera/operator does not comply, they will not be allowed to continue taping. BY USING VIDEOGRAPHIC AND/OR OTHER RECORDING DEVICES TO RECORD NACA® EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, THE RECORDER REPRESENTS THAT HE/SHE HAS OBTAINED ALL NECESSARY PERMISSIONS FROM ANY COPYRIGHT HOLDERS OR OTHER ENTITIES WHOSE RIGHTS MAY BE AFFECTED. THE RECORDER AGREES TO INDEMNIFY NACA, ITS EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS AND INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY ARISING FROM THE RECORDER’S VIDEOTAPING OR RECORDING ACTIVITIES. If the Association is unable to provide the special service(s) requested by a delegate and the delegate does not attend the event, the Association will refund the registration fee. Event Cancellation Policy NACA reserves the right to cancel any program. Causes for cancellation may include, but are not limited to, low participation by schools and/or associates, acts of God, etc. In the case of a program cancellation, NACA will only reimburse fees paid to NACA; any travel, lodging or other non-NACA® fees will not be reimbursed.

FEATURED SPEAKERS Kristen A. Renn, Ph.D. Michigan State University

Kristen A. Renn, Ph.D., professor of Higher, Adult & Lifelong Education and associate dean of Undergraduate Studies for Student Success Research at Michigan State University, will address the Professional Development Breakfast on Friday, Oct. 27, at 8:30 a.m. Her research focuses on the intersection of student success with issues of identity in higher education, including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity. She is co-lead investigator of the National Study of LGBTQ Student Success, a mixed-methods study that combines survey data with an ongoing longitudinal study. She is co-author of the books “Student Development in College: Theory, Research, and Practice” (second and third editions) and “College Students in the United States,” and author of “Women’s Colleges and Universities in a Global Context” and “Mixed Race College Students: The Ecology of Race, Identity, and Community.”

NACA® MID AMERICA 2017 REGIONAL CONFERENCE Professional Development Breakfast

Friday, Oct. 27 • 8:30–9:30 AM • Marriott Riverview 2 Learning Inside, Outside, and Across the Lines: Creating Environments for Meaningful and Inclusive Involvement and Leadership Experiences Dr. Renn will address the key question of how campus activities operate as part of the wider institutional ecosystem to provide opportunities for students to have meaningful and inclusive leadership experiences. She will introduce a research-based model for how students develop psychosocial identities and sense of belonging through their engagement in identity-based and non-identitybased campus activities. Using the context of campus activities, Dr. Renn will provide examples and pose questions about how to improve practice to achieve important goals for student success, learning, and development.

Professional Educational Session Block 1

Friday, Oct. 27 • 1:55–3:05 PM • Marriott Madison Learning Inside, Outside, and Across the Lines: Creating Environments for Meaningful and Inclusive Involvement and Leadership Experiences Participants will work with a research-based model for how students develop psychosocial identities and sense of belonging through engagement in identity-based (for example, Black Student Alliance or LGBT organizations) and non-identity-based (for example, campus activities board, student government, or academic associations). Locating this discussion within the ecosystem of diverse higher education institutions, we will consider ways to understand what is currently happening for students and how to increase opportunities for them to have meaningful experiences that build individual and collective sense of belonging.

Omid Singh has been doing stand-up comedy for eight years straight and two years gay. Omid grew up all around the world and currently resides in Los Angeles and feels most at home on stage. He’s a nightly comic, which means he goes out every single night of the week to make people laugh. The only reason he was put on this earth was to make people laugh and find delicious pizza. Over the years, Omid has been in “Argo,” “Comedy Central’s Roast Battle,” a host at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club in Las Vegas, and the opening act for Maz Jobrani (“Superior Donuts”) around the US and abroad. Most recently, Omid became King Gong by winning the most brutal open mic, “The Gong Show” at The World Famous Comedy Store in London, and he will be featured in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with his show “Story Poker.”

Jeff LeBlanc graduated from Sacred Heart University (CT), earned a history degree and imagined his destiny would likely be as a middle-school teacher. However, LeBlanc’s discovery of songwriting led him down a different path. Since releasing his first EP, he has epitomized success as an independent artist – netting three top 10 albums on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart, scoring dozens of television placements, achieving both satellite and commercial radio play, selling out headline shows and touring the country with a wide range of acts such as Tori Kelly, Parachute, Gavin DeGraw, Fifth Harmony, Chris Stapleton, Luke Bryan, Cassadee Pope, Andy Grammer and many more.

Midwest Dueling Pianos interactive musical comedy experience will have your students singing, shouting, dancing and laughing. The students at your school will provide the direction of the show to our performers by writing their favorite songs on request slips that they bring up to the pianos. Our young, energetic and exciting entertainers then perform these songs, while urging the audience to participate. The fact that many of their favorite rock, R&B and rap songs can actually be performed on the piano will leave students wide-eyed and amazed. To further the crowd interaction, we may also bring some of the audience up onto the stage to perform a song, dance, and/or skit for their fellow classmates that will bring the house down.

Being a successful student is stressful! Getting good grades, being involved on campus, finding a job … the pressures that you face can be overwhelming. Hoan Do understands this. In college, Hoan found himself overwhelmed by demanding classes, extracurricular responsibilities and important life decisions. He was stressed, suffered from depression, and contemplated suicide. Refusing to give up on life though, Hoan decided to learn how to effectively manage stress so he could succeed in school and the real world. Today, Hoan speaks across North America, helping students to lower their stress, diffuse frustration, and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Because of his speaking style and contributions, Hoan was presented the Verizon Wireless Motivator Award. His program, “Turn Your Stress into Success,” is filled with practical advice, interactive exercises, and LOL moments. Amidst the uprising in Ferguson, MO, seven St. Louis college students evolved as advocates and activists as they demanded change through policy and protest. “Show Me Democracy” is the powerful documentary about those efforts. The film functions as a powerful tool that educates young people on the power they have to effect change, and the need for educational advocacy. Too often, young people are dismissed as a group without the right to have their views considered or their interests represented at any level of decision making. One of the film’s taglines represents that perfectly: “Nothing about me, without me.” Your students will realize they have the capacity, potential, power and right to speak up on those issues that directly affect them and their peers. On campus, there is a film screening, then post-film discussion. The director and two activists will showcase. Two activists will come to your campus.

Over 800,000 people are arrested for marijuana possession in the U.S. each year – this in the same country where our founding father, George Washington, grew marijuana on his farm. Now, legal marijuana is one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S. Merwin Moe Spencer is a marijuana attorney and will introduce you to the history of marijuana growth and its use in the U.S., the political reasons for why it became illegal, and the origins of its classification as a Schedule 1 Narcotic (the same classification given to heroin). Nixon’s mandate for its Schedule 1 classification has had far-reaching consequences on areas from the economy to race relations and continues to color our politics today. The climate is changing and people are divided on this issue. Moe equips his audiences with the historical and legal facts to make up their own mind on this controversial topic.

Frank Ray is a country singer/songwriter and a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association. Frank grew up in San Antonio, TX, but was born and currently resides in Las Cruces, NM. Frank learned to sing in church and knew instantly music was his calling. As the lead singer of country band Border Avenue, he developed into the entertainer he is today. After three great years as the lead man, Frank is now leading his own project, all while being a police officer for the LCPD. His new EP, released on July 1, 2017, was produced by Tony Ardoin, the man who discovered Nashville recording artist Hunter Hayes. A major career highlight for Frank was opening up for Keith Urban in November 2016 at the Pan Am Center in Las Cruces, NM. Keith is one of Frank’s biggest musical influences, along with Garth Brooks, George Strait and Thomas Rhett.

Haeley Vaughn is on her way to becoming country-pop’s next darling. Her passion for music was cultivated in Tucson, AZ, where Haeley spent her childhood belting out tunes to anyone who would listen. It was clear that Haeley was born for the spotlight. At age 16, she became one of the top 10 females on Season 9 of “American Idol.” After gaining recognition for her stint on the famous show, Haeley packed her bags for Nashville. She has played at popular events and venues such as CMA’s annual Country Music Festival and The Bluebird Café. Haeley performs regularly at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, famously known as the No. 1 Honky Tonk in Nashville. She can also be seen at fairs, festivals and clubs from coast to coast. In January 2017, Haeley kicked off her #HGTC2017 (Haeley Goes to College) tour at university campuses across America.

Dan Henig is a creative musician and songwriter with a knack for storytelling. His style can be described as a soulful blend of pop and R&B, with lyrically driven melodies that are bound to stick with you long after you listen. Originally from Ann Arbor, MI, Henig started getting involved with music after a neck injury in high school prevented him from pursuing college football. Now, living in Los Angeles, he recently released his EP “Paper Planes & Hurricanes” to glowing reviews. He has toured nationally in the college market and always puts on a show to remember. Henig’s musical success is amplified on YouTube, where his cover videos have gotten him 100,000 subscribers and over 16.5 million views. Dan Henig’s “Gravity Bound” was featured on an episode of CBS’s, “Life Unexpected.”

Fresh from recording a set for Hulu and claiming first place at the Rooster T Feathers Comedy Competition, Kiry is a stand-up comic and full-time student pursuing whatever degree requires the least math. He grew up in the cold streets of Cleveland, OH. Not in a gangster kind of way, but literally – Cleveland has really cold winters. Kiry was working at a restaurant in 2011 when he suddenly left all the glamor behind. He felt like he couldn’t truly be himself ... a charismatic, witty, off-the-top comedian whose hilarious punchlines have made him one of the best up-and-coming comics in Northern California. After shows, he’s often told, “Your comedy changed my life,” which he can never be certain is a good or bad thing, sending him into a whirlwind of paranoia and insecurity. Kiry won the World Series of Comedy Competition and was selected for the 2016 Laughing Skull Festival.

The show you’re about to see, called “Emotion Into Art,” is a mixture of performance speed painting and inspirational speaking. Using fingertips, palms and multiple brushes, Tom Varano paints portraits of famous people on a four-foot-by-five-foot canvas in just a matter of minutes. His creations are choreographed to loud music that is powerful and stimulates the senses. The show can be tailored to accommodate the needs of any college or corporate event. Not only will the art draw you in to see what will be revealed on the blank canvas, but also the speaking and storytelling will inspire you to find your passion and to follow your dreams. His ability to captivate his audience and share the experience of color, music and action is a way to bring people into the world of art, inspiration and creativity.

Pete Lee might be the nicest person in New York City, but that’s because it’s impossible to sound aggressive with a Wisconsin accent. Pete was raised in Janesville, WI, by divorced parents and a 19-inch television, which is probably why he pursued a career in entertainment. Thanks to his highly rated “Comedy Central Presents” half-hour special, Pete has packed venues at over 500 colleges and universities across the country. Pete has also been a standout on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and played a doctor on the CBS soap opera “As the World Turns.” Most recently, Pete appeared on “The Tonight Show” starring Jimmy Fallon! Centering the Experiences of Students of Color in Program Design

“If you build it, they will come” can be applied to designing student programs that center minoritized students. Alternative breaks are historically whitecentered programs. To disrupt this and create space for students of color, we designed a student-led trip on the social issue of immigration and smashed recruitment expectations! The Hook-Up engages audiences in a facilitated discussion about hooking up, sexual assault and bystander intervention. The HookUp begins with a discussion on how gender stereotypes contribute to rape culture and harm survivors. Next, the program unpacks the practice of hooking up, and identifies the differences between a healthy hook-up, a regretted hook-up and a sexual assault. The program explores the research of Dr. David Lasik and examines how perpetrators’ modus operandi is often masked by the norms of contemporary hook-up culture. This discussion is critical because it provides the opportunity to break through the myth that rape is really just a regretted sexual experience. When we can discuss what healthy, consensual sex looks like in contrast to the methods perpetrators use, there is no confusion between healthy sex and rape.

Expanding our audience lets us complete our mission – helping men and women stand together as a united front against violence and rape culture in all of the ways they present themselves. We focus on being active bystanders and better allies as well as representatives of enthusiastic consent, and teach survivor support, verbal deescalation skills for your everyday life, and boundary setting. We also help you hone your intuition and awareness, and teach you personal safety and self-defense. All of this makes for an audience-interactive, fun and engaging program. SFB is customized to include campus resources to seamlessly fit into your overall safety plans and is presented by one of our three speakers who are trained in self-defense, personal safety and victim advocacy.

On a modern college campus, sex has as much to do with avoiding violence as it does with finding a soul mate. This program covers both sides of the equation. Rape (including date rape and statutory rape), stalking, sexual abuse and domestic abuse are all discussed – what constitutes each crime, the penalties for each, how to report an incident, and strategies for avoiding victimization. The common legal issues that arise in the course of any person’s sexual life are also explained – access to contraception, for both minors and adults, abortion rights, including the laws of parental and partner consent, and the sometimes strange statutes that govern bedroom behaviors.

Space Cadets is a dynamic Los Angeles-based triumvirate of disillusioned youths comprised of Zachary Wexelman, Dan Creed and John C, respectively. Their debut three-track EP, “fLAke,” was released in December 2015, exhibiting a unique alchemy of genres complimented by a coherent lyrical narrative reminiscent of the golden age of hip-hop. On Aug. 23, 2016, they released their sophomore effort, a self-titled four-track EP that was recorded with the legendary James Ingram. Ingram has worked with the likes of blink-182, Tyler the Creator, The Transplants, Mike Posner and more. Space Cadets provide minimal, back-to-basics, feel good, no BS music that cannot be classified or categorized, only listened to and enjoyed.

BOSS US National Loop Champion Angela Sheik is a fierce vocal and multi-instrumentalist who wows audiences with her fast effects pedal footwork and mischievous smile. She builds her own virtual backup band using vocal harmonies, beatbox rhythms, a looper pedal, and a collection of toys and instruments (including autoharp, theremin, bells, and flute). This, combined with soulful, memorable, gut-felt melodies, blends into an electronic-infused, folk-pop style reminiscent of Sia and Imogen Heap. Angela has toured the US and Europe and has opened for national acts such as The Neon Trees, Julia Holter, Joseph Arthur, and others. She received a standing ovation while opening for bass legend M’shell N’Degeocello. In the words of Tristate Indie Magazine, “I was blown away by the Angela Sheik experience, and I’m still recovering.” In her free time, Angela enjoys snowboarding, thrift store fashion, and singing duets with her miniature greyhound.

Chris Killian grew up in a small town outside of Nashville, TN. He was just a small guy with big dreams, but luckily for you, none of those dreams materialized and he decided to pursue stand-up comedy. Armed with a guitar, Chris’ humor has been described as “edgy and smart,” but that’s probably only because he likes wearing a sweater vest. Make no mistake, though – Chris’ innocent and laidback demeanor compounded by his aggressive hilarity consistently catches crowds off guard. His comedic songs, which often use acoustic melodies to launch into an array of satirical and self-deprecating lyrics, have been met with much approval from Chris’ rapidly growing fan base. You can currently see Chris as a weekly online host for www.comicbook.com, seen by millions each week.

Daniel famously garnered international attention cracking gay jokes with President Barack Obama, and most recently became a contributor for Funny or Die! Daniel has appeared at The Moontower Comedy and Oddity Fest, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Hot Tub! (Los Angeles), Hell Yes Fest (New Orleans), Jester’s Jester (London), Out of Bounds Comedy Festival, Stargayzer Festival, and OUTsider Festival, and was a finalist in the Funniest Person In Austin competition (2016), a twotime semi-finalist (2014/2015), and a finalist for the NBC StandUp Finale (2016). High-energy, high-end, balloon artist and close-up magician.

Singer/songwriter Ryan LaPerle joined the Boston music scene back in 2008 and has been flourishing since, sharing the stage with national artists like Matthew Perryman Jones, The Kin and Joshua James. Ryan’s passion has always been to sing. As a child, he would find himself singing Michael Jackson and other Motown favorites in the car with his mother. This passion has since grown and transcends when he’s on stage. In 2009, Ryan released and self produced his first full-band EP, “Disguise.” During the past eight years, Ryan has won singer/songwriting contests throughout Boston and played venues such as Berklee’s Performance Center and Cafe 939, The Middle East, Club Passim, The Living Room in NYC, and numerous colleges and universities, and has been selected to showcase or be a showcase alternate at five NACA® conferences.

When you close your eyes and think of a Muslim woman, what are the first words and images that come to your mind? You will be entertained, surprised and intrigued by this compelling visual presentation that deconstructs the “monolith” that exists in every person’s mind when it comes to Muslim women, and what it means to be Muslim in America today. Nura Maznavi is a writer, attorney and the editor of the groundbreaking anthologies “Love, InshAllah: The Secret Love Lives of American Muslim Women” and “Salaam, Love: American Muslim Men on Love, Sex & Intimacy.” Nura is breaking stereotypes by sharing intimate and true stories of Muslim men and women, because the truth about one of the most misunderstood and diverse groups of people in America is far more interesting and surprising.

From a small town in the Middle East to an engineering degree from Harvard, to a great job in the tech industry – sounds like the perfect dream! But at age 25, Nas realized that 32% of his life was already over (if the average lifespan is 76 years), and he wanted more. So obviously, he quit his perfect job to pursue an even greater life – sharing stories of amazing people and places all over the world via one minute videos – EVERY DAY for the past 400 days and counting. Wearing the same shirt every day (but washed), Nas travels the world and inspires his one million plus Facebook followers to live their greatest life ever in their own personal ways, and includes tips on how to create their own Facebook video series on a budget. And now he asks you: How are YOU going to live your greatest life ever?
