2012 NACA速 CENTRAL REGIONAL CONFERENCE

Welcome to the 2012 NACA® Central Regional Conference Welcome to the 2012 NACA® Central Regional Conference! Prepare to get connected with “The Central Network.” Eight years ago, I attended my first regional NACA® Conference in this very facility. New to the profession, I was a little nervous about what to expect. After the Convention Kick Off, which was a networking game, I connected and networked with other professionals, students, and associate members. I liked it. That fall, Facebook was only for college students, and entertainers still used MySpace. Social networking was taking off, but with NACA, we were always connected. Programming boards were connected with agents and artists, as well as other students. Now, with social media, it’s really easy to communicate and share ideas with other student leaders and professionals. You can follow your favorite entertainers for updates in 140 characters or less. Social media has made it easy to connect. We want you to get connected this weekend. Like it. Pin it. Tweet about it. Take home information. Link and connect to other campus activities students and professionals, associate members, and artists. Go home and make yourself and your programming boards better. The Regional Conference Program Committee has been hard at work getting ready for you. From informative and beneficial educational sessions and entertaining showcases, to the Campus Activities Marketplace (CAMP) and networking with others in campus engagement and entertainment, this will be more than just a “social” network. Gain the most out of your conference experience by attending the variety of educational sessions. Send representatives from your delegation to as many ed sessions as possible. Gather information in CAMP and meet the associate members and artists. Block Book and save money for your school. Go to dinner with other delegations. Ask an associate member to join you. But above all, have a blast! After eight years and 14 conferences and conventions, I still like NACA...now it’s just Facebook official. It’s a great organization to engage and build student leaders, create a dialogue for campus engagement, connect entertainers and speakers with schools, and enhance campus life throughout the U.S. You just joined our network...welcome! Be sure to follow us on Twitter at @thenacacen and like us on Facebook for updates or ask any of the dedicated RCPC team members. If I can be of assistance during the conference, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at blhopper@k-state.edu or on Twitter @blhopper. Thanks for being here! Ben Hopper 2012 Conference Chair, Kansas State University

Welcome to the NACA® Central Regional Conference! On behalf of NACA, we hope you enjoy your stay in Arlington. Our regional conferences provide a wonderful opportunity for schools to network, take back new ideas and save money on programming. For us, it’s an opportunity to continue our mission of providing members with innovative practices and access to programs that support campus engagement. Each year we look forward to presenting a stimulating regional event with a wealth of new information and a variety of entertainment acts for school attendees to consider bringing to their campuses. To our associate members, artists, performers and speakers, we welcome you to be a part of the excitement as schools engage in all aspects of the conference. This is a great venue for you to showcase your talent and share information with our member schools throughout the region. There are many opportunities available during the next few days, so please take time to review your program guide for all Block Booking™ activities, educational sessions, marketplace hours and showcases. We would like to thank Ben Hopper, our Central Regional Conference Program Chair and our dedicated volunteers for their work in presenting this year’s conference. Thank you for joining us! David DeAngelis Chair, NACA Board of Directors

CONFERENCE NOTES Helpful Tips for Conference Delegates

NACA® Vocabulary

There’s a lot to take in at each NACA® Regional Conference and we don’t want you missing out on anything in Central! One of the first things you should know about NACA® Conferences is the lingo. Below are a few Conference tips and some NACA vocabulary that you’ll find useful throughout the Conference. Once you get this down, you’re well on your way to being a seasoned NACA® Conference-goer! Consider implementing some of these quick tips before, during, and after the conference. In order to get the most out of the conference, it takes some planning ahead of time. Here are some recommendations from the Central Regional Conference Program Committee (RCPC) for preparing your delegation:

• 3/5 or 5/7, etc.—Used in Block BookingTM, these numbers translate to three performances in five days, or five performances in seven days. • Associate Member—Agents and artists who are members of the National Association for Campus Activities are known as associate members. • Block—A block is formed when three or more schools located close from one another in the region submit CB (Commitment if Block forms) or CR (Contract Requested on site) forms for an act in a consecutive period of time. • Campus Activities Marketplace (CAMP)—This is the area where associate members’ booths are located. It is a place to meet with agents and explore entertainment options. • Block Booker—A Block Booker is a person who is selected by their school to represent them at the regional conference. Block Bookers have a Block Booker stamp on their name badge. This person must be able to attend all Block BookingTM meetings and is the only person from the delegation who is authorized to sign Block BookingTM forms. • Delegates—Delegates are the students and staff from member schools who attend the regional conference. • Educational Sessions—These sessions are designed to help delegates develop skills, techniques, knowledge and ideas to assist in their development as effective leaders and successful professionals. These educational sessions are presented by staff, associate members and students who are experienced in campus activities and student affairs. • Non-Showcasing Acts—These artists and attractions are not appearing in talent showcases during the regional conference, but are represented by agencies in booths in CAMP. There are hundreds of non-showcasing acts available to schools for their programming needs. • Showcase—A showcase is a 15-minute performance slot during which an attraction performs before college talent buyers.

At the Conference • Arrive on site between 11 am and 1:45 pm in order to get settled before the conference begins. • Your full delegation should attend the Conference Dinner. • Discuss and assign educational sessions. Disperse members of the delegation to cover as many sessions as possible. Don’t have two or more members of your delegation in the same session. Balance the interests of the institution, student organization and the individual when determining which sessions each delegate should attend. • Encourage members to take copious notes and collect many resources to share with the other members of the organization. • Have a group debriefing after attending a block of sessions or the conference as a whole so everyone receives the benefit of as many sessions as possible. This group could also include student and staff members at your institution who could not attend. • Take advantage of special opportunities during the conference—Information Exchange, Special Event Showcases, etc. • Have the “Block Booker” attend all Block BookingTM meetings and take advantage of the Block BookingTM process as much as possible to save your institution money. • Each delegate should attend all of the showcases. • Stop by each booth in the Campus Activities Marketplace to meet artists, performers and agents and exchange information with them. • Meet new people and encourage students to do the same—remember, Associate Members are people too!

Also remember, our volunteers are happy to help as well. They can help you with any specific question(s) that you may have.

After the Conference • Have delegates complete a post-conference report. • Review the materials on showcasing acts and other acts/companies in which the delegation is interested. • Everyone should get together and review how the conference went for the delegation and follow up with the business contacts made. • Plan a time to have the entire delegation share the information they learned at the conference with the rest of your programming board.

2012 NACA® CENTRAL REGIONAL CONFERENCE

NACA POLICIES NACA’s Mission The National Association for Campus Activities will be the recognized leader in higher education for providing members with innovative practices and access to programs that support campus engagement. NACA’s Definition of Diversity Diversity is an attribute and a goal. As an attribute, diversity is ethnic identification/race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion, economic status and the many other aspects of our lives which define the family of humanity. As a goal, diversity refers to the intentional valuing, respecting and inclusion of all peoples. NACA recognizes the diversity of all its members and supports the development and implementation of programs and services that achieve this goal. Non-Discrimination, Diversity Advancement and Affirmative Action Principles NACA is committed to advancing diversity development and the principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action through its respective programs, services and volunteer involvement. To ensure compliance with these principles, the organization: 1. Will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, economic status, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ethnic background or disability in any of their policies, procedures or practices. 2. Will promote vigorous efforts to enhance, develop and increase a diverse volunteer pool in all areas of the Association. 3. Will actively promote diversity in their programs and services. 4. Will expect all volunteers and NACA Office staff to consistently display a sensitivity to diversity and the principles of affirmative action. 5. Will promote the importance of eliminating discriminatory and/or culturally insensitive language, behavior and content from NACA-sponsored activities and will urge all members and guests of the Association to cooperate in this effort. There is no intent to support censorship. The purpose is to induce thought and advance planning in an effort to ensure that showcase performances, Campus Activities Marketplace displays, educational sessions and other NACAsponsored activities reflect appropriate diversity and sensitivity in their plans and actions. Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Policy The National Association for Campus Activities and the NACA Foundation recognize the serious threats that alcohol and other substance abuse present to college populations, the entertainment industry, and to society as a whole. We realize that our Association is not immune to the problems associated with abuse. NACA is committed to addressing this issue through various activities, programs and educational efforts on regional and national levels. All NACA members and volunteers are encouraged to uphold the Association’s statement in spirit and action; however, NACA has no responsibility for the conduct or behavior of event attendees. Alcohol served outside of any official event (an official event is one endorsed or hosted by NACA) is not the responsibility of NACA, but is instead the responsibility of the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity. All responsibility for determining whether participants at the activity are underage and for complying with applicable state and local laws rests solely with the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity, and is not in any way the responsibility of NACA or any of its employees or representatives. In the event that NACA becomes the subject of a claim or loss arising from violation of this policy by any person, group or business entity, or service of alcohol at any non-official event, that person, group or business entity agrees that it shall indemnify and hold harmless NACA from and against all resulting claims and losses, including NACA’s costs and attorney’s fees, that arise from or relate to violation of this policy and/or service of alcohol at said non-official event. NACA Statement Regarding Legal Drinking Age The legal drinking age is 21. The conference hotel and facilities will not tolerate alcoholic beverages carried in open containers by anyone on these properties. NACA will not allow alcohol to be carried into showcases or the Campus Activities Marketplace. NACA Statement on Showcases Attendance at showcase events is voluntary, and it is the responsibility of the attendee to determine whether a particular event poses a risk to the attendee. Some element of risk may be associated with some showcase events. Some events may include hypnosis, and some individuals may be more susceptible to hypnosis than others. The attendee accepts all responsibility for all consequences associated with attending showcase events, and NACA is held harmless against all claims arising from any result of attending a showcase event.

2012 NACA® CENTRAL REGIONAL CONFERENCE

If you desire special services because of a disability, handicap or special need, please indicate the special service(s) on an attached sheet of paper and return it to the address indicated in these registration materials as early as possible and at least six weeks in advance of the first day of the conference. If the Association is unable to provide the special service(s) you requested and you do not attend the event, the Association will refund your registration fee. Special Dietary Needs Please indicate the need for special meals on the registration form. Special meals may not be available at all sites. Videotaping/Photography Policies NACA photographs and videotapes events and attendees. These photographs and video images may be used in any NACA materials and publications, and on the NACA web site. By attending this event, you, your delegates and/or the acts you represent give NACA consent to use photographs and video images in which you, your delegates and/or your acts appear. NACA delegates or other persons may use photographic, videotape or other image and sound recording devices to record events and activities that take place during NACA events, as long as these activities do not interfere with the audience enjoyment of or participation in NACA events. Those photographing, videotaping or otherwise recording events cannot interfere with showcase technical crew, stagehands, etc. The following specific guidelines apply to any photography, videotaping or other recording at an NACA event: 1. Professional crews will not be allowed; 2. On-stage filming or placement will not be allowed. Recording must occur from the show floor; 3. Access to the soundboard will not be allowed; 4. Audience views cannot be obstructed; 5. Power must be self-contained (i.e., battery packs). Access to the event power supply will not be allowed; 6. Use of supplemental lighting will not be allowed; 7. Some forms of recording/taping may not be available at specific venues due to union or other facility regulations; 8. If audience members, showcase crew or other technical, conference or facility staff complain about the position of a camera/operator, the camera/operator will be asked to move. If the camera/operator does not comply, they will not be allowed to continue taping. BY USING VIDEOGRAPHIC AND/OR OTHER RECORDING DEVICES TO RECORD NACA EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, THE RECORDER REPRESENTS THAT HE/SHE HAS OBTAINED ALL NECESSARY PERMISSIONS FROM ANY COPYRIGHT HOLDERS OR OTHER ENTITIES WHOSE RIGHTS MAY BE AFFECTED. THE RECORDER AGREES TO INDEMNIFY NACA, ITS EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS AND INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY ARISING FROM THE RECORDER’S VIDEOTAPING OR RECORDING ACTIVITIES. Event Cancellation Policy NACA reserves the right to cancel any program. Causes for cancellation may include, but are not limited to, low participation by schools and/or associates, acts of God, etc. In the case of a program cancellation, NACA will only reimburse fees paid to NACA; any travel, lodging or other non-NACA fees will not be reimbursed. NACA Civility Statement Prominent among the values that define the NACA community is civility, which includes mutual respect, fairness, and politeness. Membership in any community requires a concern for the common good for all who belong to that community. Each individual may possess different ideas, as well as different ways of communicating those ideas, particularly in a community as varied and diverse as an association. Because of these differences, respect and civility are integral to maintaining the quality of the association environment. Respect and civility should therefore be afforded to all individuals regardless of role within the association. This includes treating people with courtesy and consideration, acting and speaking judiciously and behaving professionally. All members of the association community are called upon to promote and value this ethic of common respect and civility. We will encourage discussion with a goal of instilling an appreciation for the importance of fair-mindedness, personal responsibility, and respect for differing opinions. At such occasions, members will always be strongly encouraged to observe common standards of decorum and to display a respectful tenor. We will also consider appropriate steps to be taken when members of our community do not respect these standards.

2012 NACA® CENTRAL REGIONAL CONFERENCE

SAVE MONEY BUILD RELATIONSHIPS DEVELOP SKILLS Just as in 1960, when a group of school representatives formalized a simple and practical idea to increase the buying power of their campus programming dollars, BLOCK BOOKINGTM continues to be a cornerstone of NACA. Whether you approach the process from a money-saving standpoint or a student development perspective, the advantages to school members, associate members and artists/performers are many.

Benefits: • Saving money • Bring in more diverse talent by partnering with surrounding schools • Develop long-lasting partnerships with agencies and artists • Support green environmental efforts by eliminating excessive travel • Educate students in the art of negotiation, organizational skills and contracting • Create avenues for students to pursue future careers

Does Block BookingTM really work? Absolutely! It is worth the time for both schools and associates to participate in Block Booking.TM Check out what this school member said: Block BookingTM has been extremely beneficial to Lancer Productions, the programming board at Longwood University. This past year alone, we estimate that we have saved $38,000 by participating. Whether we choose to request a contract on site, or partner with other schools in the area, Block BookingTM is more than worthwhile. The best part about it is that the money we save in Block BookingTM is more than the cost of registration and travel for the regional and national conventions.

The truth is most comedians write their own bios. I’m not judging. It’s a lot easier to brag about one’s own accomplishments while hiding behind the third person. I could write things like: “Chad’s devilishly naughty nature shines through like comedy gold when he takes the stage. Chad’s edgy style usually begins by splitting the room into two equally stunned fractions and then miraculously ends up with everyone leaving the show with a new favorite comedian.” But that’s lame. The truth is I’d rather you pick me to perform at your school and see for yourself. To get you to book me I’ll tell you this: I’ve performed at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, The Late Late Show on CBS, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, Comedy Central Presents: Chad Daniels and the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. I’m funny, enjoy!

Last year alone, Carter mystified students at more than 200 colleges. Carter is notorious for reading and revealing thoughts of audience members – but don’t worry, he won’t reveal any embarrassing information…unless it’s funny. Carter is the premier mentalist on the college circuit, the winner of Campus Activities Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards for Entertainer of The Year, Performing Arts Entertainer of the Year, Best Male Performer, and Best Novelty Live Performer. Check. Songwriter? Check. Standard self-piano/guitar accompaniment? Of course. This certainly describes many artists playing all over the country, including Houston native singer/songwriter Preston Leatherman. Yet what is it that sets this breakout artist apart from the pack? Perhaps it is his unique sense of humor and stage presence that will have you just as excited to hear what he will say or do between the songs than to actually hear them. Maybe it is the fact that you could one second be hearing an original song, and then the next, be screaming at the top of your lungs a rendition of “Don’t Stop Believin’” with your closest friends. Or maybe it is just the irresistible, catchy songs Preston crafts that draws people in. Borrowing old-school Motown flavor along with jazz stylings, Preston has created a unique sound of soulful music that takes the idea of a singer/songwriter to a new level.

Enter longtime friend Steve Libby (bass), Cantillon’s younger brother Michael (electrics, acoustics and keyboards) and California transplant Matt Palermo (drums). With two albums to their name, dozens of songs in the hopper and even more yet to be written, Tommy and The High Pilots are just getting started. As is often the case in life, adversity led to opportunity for Cantillon and his fellow Pilots, and they plan on taking full advantage. With a full schedule, I needed to continue playing, but could not afford to purchase or spend years looking for those vintage Gibson guitars. I decided to try to build instead of buy. Since then, playing and building only homemade guitars and drums has become a passion. Scouring antique shops and auctions, I find parts to build my own instruments. Every guitar and instrument I build uses parts and pieces that have stories, a history of their own. Since I was a little kid, I have been obsessed with anything “vintage.” From longboard surfing and old busted guitars, to cars, motorcycles, and even furniture. I’ve kinda always liked things the way they used to be. Writing songs on these antiques sort of keeps that feeling alive for me. I’ve shared the stage with acts such as Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer, Rusted Root, The Rustic Overtones, State Radio, the members of Dispatch, The Ryan Montbleau Band, Barefoot Truth, WIll Dailey & The Rivals, and many more... “It’s the most fun I have had at The Bitter End (NYC) in twenty years. They were formed in 2006 in St. Louis, MO, and by combining the varied influences of its members, they make a sound that the well respected audio engineer Paul Hennerich described as “P-Funk meets Pink Floyd.” The unlikely formation of the band was initiated by iLLPHONiCS frontman and emcee, Fallout Morris, when he was an audio production student at Webster University. He decided to make use of the school’s recording studio to record an album, and called on his U.City High comrades Keith Moore (keys), Chaz Brew (drums), and Simon Chervitz (bass), as well as fellow Webster classmate, Kevin Koehler (guitar), to provide the songs and instrumentation. After six years of rehearsals, amazing live shows and recordings, the band’s music has evolved into something many call the “iLLPHONiCS Sound”—changing with each member’s personal growth.

Do Androids Dream of Electric (Facebook Friends)? Wrangling the Wiley Web 2.0 Beast on the Social Media Frontier The First Amendment Center reports that less than three percent of Americans can identify the five, foundational constructs protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Even more chilling is the Center’s suggestion that many U.S. citizens are unable to accurately identify what even the most widely recognized element of the First Amendment – “Freedom of Speech” – means in the context of the Bill of Rights. Wars have been fought, blood shed and lives lost for the protection of Constitutionally-protected liberties, yet many Americans today cannot name nor accurately describe even the basic tenets the First Amendment shelters. To further exacerbate this, today as a culture we are forced to interpret First Amendment ideologies through a lens the founding authors could never have imagined: Twitter, reddit, Google+, YouTube and the thousands upon thousands of portable applications that make our most private thoughts and ideas and messages public for the world to ogle. This presentation will look at the First Amendment through the eyes of a social media user and producer, and will address potential safeguards and toolsets provided by media literacy when traversing the wide, paradigm-shifting terrain of digital media. Presenter(s): Dr. Christopher Keller, Associate Professor and Student Media Advisor, Cameron University (OK) Audience: Staff Level: Advanced Room: M7
